Hello all,
Welcome to a Victorian heritage trains video. Today we begin Victoria's 2024 mainline steam season with a trip to Bendigo for the annual Easter Festival. This tour is a day trip, beginning from Melbourne with an 8AM departure. The train traverses the Sunbury line and powers up the great divide through the Macedon Ranges. There is a stop in Castlemaine to allow the train to be overtaken by a regular service while passengers can stretch their legs a little. Then came the last pace to Bendigo, arriving just in time for lunch. Here travellers get five hours to explore the old gold mining township and enjoy the festivities down the main street. The Easter Parade is a highlight of the festival, commemorating multiculturalism in Bendigo.
To haul the train, we have the "Spirit of Bendigo'' itself, Hudson R Class R711 at the helm, and two diesel locomotives assisting. High-nose T-class T364 and recently gifted and reactivated streamliner S301 make up the diesel pairing. This tour also marked the return of locomotive S301 after over a decade’s absence. It was formerly owned by Pacific National and, like the other two S-classes, was gifted to a heritage organisation earlier this year.
We begin the video at Southern Cross Station, capturing the transfer from Newport then heading out to Diggers Rest to begin our chase north west.
