  • Just how much of a difference does riding with the right clothing and gear make on a mountain bike ride? Do you really need technical and breathable bike-specific clothing and pads to stay cool and comfortable, or can a hoody and shorts (with heavy-duty and sweaty pads) cut the mustard? We sent Neil Donoghue And Blake Samson on an epic ride to find out.

    As a person who seems to sweat more readily than most, tech materials that wick the sweat away are god send... used to finish rides with my t-shirt soaked through.. not so much these days.. Also found that a 'skullcap' under my helmet has REALLY helped stop the sweat dripping into my eyes as i ride.

    In 90/91 riding in SoCal, we were wearing cotton shorts, Vans shoes, and no shirt or helmet. Things have really changed a lot; many people are now more concerned with having the latest tech gear to look cool to other riders than they are about getting out and hitting the trails.

      Exactly. You can also buy good sports clothing without getting overpriced mtb "technical" stuff. Sports direct sports top for ÂŁ5 works fine. Shorts, and decent cycling chamois (also about ÂŁ10-15 from Sports Direct) then you can wear any regular shorts on top. And I've personally never worn knee sleves, although for bike park they probably are worth investing in

    Any brand's sweat wicking t's work for me. But when it comes to shorts and pants, going with MTB specific brands makes good sense! They're baggy enough to fit knee pads and won't restrict your range of motion, while at the same time having a crotch that won't snag the seat. They're simply shaped differently!

    • @chrisinstasis7986
      @chrisinstasis7986 Pƙed 3 lety +4

      Yep, it's possibly the exception to the "all the gear, no idea" rule. I always think take a bit off the bike budget to put to clothing and it can be the difference between a great day and a miserable one. An extra 100 spent on the bike won't transform your riding, but on gear it could transform your day out.

      @@chrisinstasis7986 One benefit to having dedicated MTB clothing is that you don't mind if it gets caked with mud etc... out on a ride, rather than getting mud stains all over your expensive hiking clothes...
      Also the cost saving is a bit red herring I think, if you wear one garment every day it will need replacing sooner than if you have two garments that you alternate between.

    Almost never in shorts. Found a very un-bike like clothing by Columbia, called Omni-shade. Fairly breathable, I will be wet under hydration pack. But generally comfortable in all but worst heat. Yes, you can certainly ride in whatever. Street clothes so long as they don't get in the way or get snagged on anything including the bike. I've had many debates with riding buddies about how it's not worth the money for bike specific gear. If only they knew. Cotton sucks when you sweat. Clingy and feels horrible. Smells worse after a sweaty ride. Cotton during the winter keeps you colder when it gets wet. When it comes to outdoor activities I try not to wear cotton made clothes.
    I agree with this video and there are great deals all the time on sport specific gear made to be more durable, lighter, breathable, sweat wicking and some even have antibacterial protection to keep it from smelling bad.

    I have yet to find clothing that claimed to be "sweat wicking" that actually is. usually the claims of "fast drying" are pretty accurate, and I can wear them dry, but just as a for instance my cycling commute to work in the summer I will usually arrive with my form fitting, supposedly sweat wicking technical shirt stuck to my back, and difficult to take off. maybe I just have unreal expectations wherein my definition of "sweat wicking" implies that the sweat should be transported from next to my skin to the surface of the clothing, where the fast drying function can then take over. I do have items that seem to function this way they just aren't clothing. for example my down hammocking quilt, I can be soaked to the bone and climb into it and in a very short period of time be warm in the interior of the quilt will be dry while the surface feels clammy to the touch.

    Cheap alternative to a MTB jersey. Synthetic T-shirt i.e. under armor or similar type wick moisture away just as well as a jersey and can be had quite cheap if you avoid a certain name brand *cough*under armor*cough*.

    I’m interested in knowing if there was a point in the ride where the discomfort level affected your riding ability Blake? As in did you change your body position in order to find relief from the discomfort?

      Dude you can ride in everything, don't start running behind the best tech and fabric as an excuse! Of course they're better and more ventilated and bla bla, but if you don't have them now it's not gonna affect your performance at a noticeable level, coming from one that has ridden a lot in casual clothes before slowly buying better stuff

      @@giulianotesta1847 I was referring to the chafing that Blake was experiencing from his knee protecton. I've been riding for more than 25 years. My question was more specifically about a curiosity as to the effect of any compensation for his discomfort to the actual riding. I myself have gone through a similar experience as you and gradually upgraded to better performing gear. Saying that I still after all these years hang on to an old habit of always wearing a t-shirt while riding. I may have a tech base layer under in cooler weather but always a t-shirt over.

    Blake maybe the reason that you don't suffer like that when you wear pads to the skate park is because your own knee pads aren't 2 sizes too small like those ones. Seems a bit unnecessary to advertise clothes that are supposed to be better anyway...
