- Just how much of a difference does riding with the right clothing and gear make in bad weather? Do you really need technical and breathable mountain bike clothing to stay warm and dry? We sent Blake, Neil and Doddy out to ride in the cold and wet but only two of them thought to plan ahead...

I hope you gave the camera man some Gortex! He's the real hero here
TrailRiderMTB that’s very true!
They let the crew spray a hose at them! now if I were cold and wet I'd be spraying that hose hose right down Doddy's neck ;-)
I am so impressed with the quality of these videos: wind noise reduction, first-rate focus, excellent first to third person action shots, fabulous trail highlights, professional mtb educational information, and huge laughs from complementary personalities. What are people waiting for? Quit browsing people! 1 MILLION SUBS ALREADY!!
Now 1.29 million subscribers
That MTBer Kid now it’s 1.55
ok, here's a tiny bit of criticism - colour grading is non existent. it's bleak and at some parts over exposed and washed out. besides that , for the entire video i waited for anyone to touch the subject on glasses and googles, which imo are very important when it comes to dealing with weather elements. Not a word..
apart from that, great vid. i love these lads!
1.63M now :D
Blake...you're just hilarious 🤣
I’d go with blake’s outfit🤙😂
I learned so much new things
Neil has a tatoo?!?
Five ten Six eleven and a damn nice one too!
What??!!
Knowing me I would still wear what Blake is wearing 😂😂😂 love the vids
ye me too
Hasn't rained in a month in the desert but drops to 20 every morning so that perfect for here.
GMBN should make more videos as a group like this one!
4:16 - Doddy "You can see the islands out in the estuary there"
Blake: "Oh yeah real nice" (clearly doesn't give a flying sh*t about the view)!
Adam Kraig whose this man filming us? - Martyn Ashton What are you on about they don’t use outside help
my son loves rain and mud but mom is never happy when he sees us come back. gmbn 4 ever
Rain never stops passion
Exactly! There is no bad weather, only bad clothes.
I mean not bad clothes, wrong clothes.
@@pete3816 Yeah maybe
@@pete3816 You are the type who always has to one-up everybody. Are you from Poland or what? less comfortable clothes are bad clothes. Kristjan was right!
@@kristjanmagi1158 correct, as Billy Connolly once said- 'there's no such thing as the wrong weather, just the wrong clothing' . - 'Get a raincoat and live a little'
Doddy is all for riding in the rain!
Well I live in South Wales, if rain stopped play there would be no play!!
Now.....where did I put my wellie spd's :)
2:15 BLAKE'S OLD GRANDMA VOICE ACTIVATED YEEAAHH !!!!!
J Domingues 🤣🤣
10:55 i much love for blake 😂
The top gear of mountainbiking - i love it!
Did some mountaineering/wilderness travel classes and the first lesson was..."Cotton kills".
I love that opening line, "and more importantly, is Blake even that bothered?"
Thank you Blake for taking one for the Team to illustrate the point. My experience with "breathable" fabrics has not been the same of most of what I have read. My experience has been that if the moisture can get out, so can the heat. And I end up cold. Even with the proper polyester/polypropylene base and a fleece middle layer. At first I though it was because I was buying cheap gear. But even after springing for expensive gear the results were the same. Because I am going to get all sweaty any ways I have chosen a completely water proof coated riding jacket. Keeps the heat in for me. And yes I agree with Neal, wool for socks. Tried different variations of "miracle" fabrics with the same results. Keep up the good work and I love to see the three of you riding together.
No way I would do that by myself but with friends, looks like a good time.
Wait a minute... Speedos *aren’t* appropriate then?
Thanks for the tip mate. I was sick of wearing the same pair every ride anyway 👍
no but funky trunks are :D
That actually made me laugh out loud
Aww dam
@A Dan and His Bike
Course they are, so long as they are day-glo!
Can't beat Gore products when it comes to light weight water/windproof clothing.
1:43 Blake is such a maniac, i love that guy!
Blake going to the pub in his skivvies. classic.
Legends
After 20 years of riding one thing I have learnt it's almost impossible to stay completely dry unless you wear a bin liner, then you'll get piss wet through from the inside out. Good clothing keeps you warm and that's the most important thing..
You all could have borrowed Steve Jones wellies !
No matter what you wear. It still looks so much fun!
Yep your winter looks more like our Autumn, such kind of cloth wouldn't help in -10C with ice covered by 15 centimeters of snow.)
But I still prefer frozen mud then wet))
Ahhh... The 3 GMBN Droogs out for a bit of fun, in the rain. Well done. Well done.
That is the best crew GMBN has ever had!!!
Great vid👍 it's all part of the fun of MTB getting plastered in mud and wet, then you can sit by a log fire in the pub with a pint!
Neil and those ABS....
That river crossing looks like one at Grizedale I fell into a few years ago. Dad said "don't look at the river or you will fall in it" and I looked around for it and then fell in it.
Wet weather riding is my favourite ☮️
I have neoprene stuff with waterproof clothing to go over, definitely helped in the minus weather's my trousers even have a pocket to keep my phone warm
0:59 Blake’s impression of The Mouth of Sauron.
Glamour shots full of mud! Awesome stuff!
I gave thumbs up just for that Doddy's last look :D love you dude!
I go with Doddy here. I have a rain jacket, a windstopper, base layer, long sleve jersey, fox attack fire winter gloves that are also windproof and waterproof, base layer pants over my bib shorts, knee pads and fox attack water pants that are windproof and waterproof. Nice to stay warm and dry.
Yes it can. North Texas trails are clay-laden and turn to peanut butter when it rains. All the trails here are closed at the first hint of rain and take forever to dry out.
Doddy snug as a bug in a rug and smug, Blake the poor fall guy and Neil playing the straight man - brilliant. I don't understand why you change into your bike clothing when you arrive at your location. I put most of my cycle gear on before I leave my house which saves a lot of faffing about when you get to your ride destination. Always take a spare set of clothes for post ride comfort. Sorted!
Cotton water absorption & wet weight - brutal..UK weather 🖖
The new forest is one of the best places for wet weather riding its both challenging and fun. But you’ve got to be with a friend for all the bants on the way.
Seymour arms, Blagdon. Nice spot, particularly in summer. Mendips zone.
whyyyyyyy are there dislikes!! come on guys, this is a precious gem
because the world is full of assholes
maybe hit by accident ? ( I have been guilty of that before)
(btw...and i know you can switch it...but i my case didn't realize it)
I’ve been rocking the hoodie and jeans combo for ages but recently got sick of my hood being blown off by the wind and generally getting soaked and hot and sweaty when it rains with a supposedly waterproof cheap over jacket thing when it rains, I splashed out on a decent Scott goretex jacket and I can’t believe the difference ! It is incredibly waterproof and just feels so light and great , makes me enjoy being on my bike a lot more
Exceeds expectations!
Was up on the Mendips back in April, and it felt pretty chilly back then, even with the right gear. Blake was pretty brave riding out there in jeans and a hoodie in wet weather. Never the wrong weather, just wrong clothes! Great video
I picked up an unissued army gortex off eBay for£30 a few years ago. It's great for mountain biking because it is stronger than shop bought stuff. My mate ripped his expensive cycling jacket on a branch the first time he used it.
We have all been there, i started up as blake and ended up as doddy
Why is no one in the comment section freaking out about their bikes? I'm in love with every single one of them.
My. favourite setup for bombing the descents is a nice warm base layer on the inside and some casual jeans and hoodie up to. Maybe a neck warmer for good mesoure. obviously going to check out Gore bas I might want a new base layer set.
Oh Blake, what a hero! God lad taking one for the team.
A good plan is to spray your gear with Nikwax or similar. Doesn't make it waterproof completely, but can be a godsend. You can get it to put in the washing machine too.
For the younger crowd out there there is nylon options at a fraction of the cost, look for strategic vents to control moisture. The goretex is best, but we all dont start on 10000.00 dollars / pounds bike either.
Love Blake's commitment, anything for the bit. I had to do a double take at the pub run.
Love it, "It's not the first time that you were naked in a Pub!"
Blake is the true hero of this vid!
Blake you are a good presenter and I learn a lot and I do like the videos
I use some Basic Snow shirts and a wind jacket they are super warm and i haver great movement
Well done guys...you made the soggy mendips look appealing ... that takes some doing. Next weekends riding sorted !
Man this Video is Jackpot for me! After this vid decided to walk to my local sports centre and shop for random Bike stuff, Saw on the Clearance corner a Dakine Waterproof MTB short with cycling Bib Included, all for $45. What a Win!!! Without this vid i wont even go to the shop today. LMAO
nothing better than sealskinz waterproof mtb socks in the winter
Meh. Bread bags for me, all day
Great video gents!! Sooo close to 1 million subs. Keep up the good work. 👌
A real serious thing to consider is if you are trail riding say on a moor in the middle of nowhere the wrong clothing can turn an crash&injury or even a bolloxed bike into a serious incident... hypothermia is never far away if injured even on warmer wet days.
Blake, as always, an absolute legend! :D
i just went out today, (pissing down) same stuff as I've bee wearing all year,.went to the supermarket on the way home ad dripped a puddle at the checkout. I feel i'm more of a Blake but aspire to be a Neil. a Doddy is just a distant pipe dream.
I ride in the rain all the time. Plus there’s usually no one else there to piss you off
Just you pissing others off with the ruts you leave that last half of the season.
Mountainbikers moaning about ruts! ffs when did mtb start becoming a fashion show for complete wusses that want smooth trails??
Short answer is no.riding in the rain can still be fun and theres some really good lightweight waterproof gear around for reasonable prices if it gets really wet.😜
I use my altura hi vis jacket and boardman overtrousers if it gets too heavy.
I love how the 3 personalities compliment each other. Three Blakes would be unbearable, 3 Neils and it would be boring AF, and 3 Doddies and, well, it would be GCN ;)
Give Dirtlej a try... their Dirtsuit‘s are awesome! I stayed completely dry and warm today while riding through mud and puddles while the snow was falling at minus 1 degree celcius...
I live in the desert. No rain rides. If it’s raining it’s also lightning and probably flash flooding. It’s either a monsoon or it’s bone dry.
"Obviously Blake has fun whatever he does".
Blake loading the dishwasher:
"Big pasta pot, sending it! YEEEEEEEEAAAAAAASSSSS!"
Nice one!
Very underrated video
I ride in the rain as much as my local trails will allow me. It’s usually the best time because no one else to ruin your ride. I would ride in the wet weather all the time when we lived in Italy. I would argue that wet weather is more fun especially afterwards going to the bar to grab a hot meal and cold beer.
I love having Doddy as a presenter now, doing more riding stuff:)
There's a time and place for every kind of "tech" to make riding a bit easier - you can go without and it's still doable, but comes with a price. *rain gear* IMO is the easiest and most distinct to experience the differences with!
Nothing stops you faster than a _cold core_ ... well ... a tree maybe, but you get the point! 😅
Good that I live in a country that winter is not a real winter...
Greetings from the Galilee.
You guys should be on tv.
You smash ratings.
Top vids.
👍🏼
So excited for Christmas as I'm getting my own mountain bike because of gmbn and sbh.
Love these guys 😆👍🙏
as blake says in the other video rules on mountain biking that needs to be broken "dress like a pro" living the dream hahahah
I dress like this when its 50 F and sunny out, in Phoenix AZ, and still cold haha!
I live in HYD, India it gets up to 55°C in the summer and most of the time I'm in double layers...In the winter it gets to about 12°C and by then I'm in 6 layers!
I know how you feel.
Oh, my God! These guys are going to make me laugh to death!!!
Hahahahahaha! Nice post, and I think Blake misses South Africa’s sun…
The section at 4:43 was so good!
Why not fenders for the mud?
Blake your the man 👍🏻👊🏻
Loooool great vid
I've always found I get wetter from wheel spray rather than rain, unless it's a proper downpour, so a decent set of mudguards make a massive difference. All my bikes get a rear Mudhugger for the winter (front one all year round, I live in Wales!!) and it makes a huge difference to how wet I don't get. It may look awful from an aesthetics point of view but it means I can ride for much longer without getting into trouble getting cold. Also I'm a bit of a sweaty rider so the waterproof stuff that Doddy wore can be a bit boil-in-the-bag for me so with mudguards I can drop down to the kit that Neil was wearing. Just keep stops to a minimum and the heat of pedalling keeps me happy the whole ride.
Loving the latest vids from gmbn. Full of good banter!
Great fun video, Informative, love you guys.
Great video. Poor Blake...
I always ride in gear like Blake xF
Waffeey same its way less hassle
I would like a video on the best winter gloves and socks to wear? Like is this the best recipe for warmth while riding?
64% Merino Wool, 33% Nylon, 3% Lycra. Spandex
How is the Gore fabric effected by dirt and grit over time? Does it lose its breathable characteristics? Would you consider doing a comparison between that stuff and cheaper PU coated fabrics in a future episode?
Blake just loves life, so funny 😂
The weather is very similar in belgium, i already wear a waterproof pant because temperature is negative now 😉 Nice funny vidéo guys 🤙😁😋
had me laughing all way through haha !! great comedy
Blake is the Daredevil! Respect! =)
Just watched this video and thoroughly entertained as usual. You guys always produce fab and informative vids to help us improve our skills with our bikes. Thank you!
