  • Just how much of a difference does riding with the right clothing and gear make in bad weather? Do you really need technical and breathable mountain bike clothing to stay warm and dry? We sent Blake, Neil and Doddy out to ride in the cold and wet but only two of them thought to plan ahead...

ok, here's a tiny bit of criticism - colour grading is non existent. it's bleak and at some parts over exposed and washed out. besides that , for the entire video i waited for anyone to touch the subject on glasses and googles, which imo are very important when it comes to dealing with weather elements. Not a word..

Thank you Blake for taking one for the Team to illustrate the point. My experience with "breathable" fabrics has not been the same of most of what I have read. My experience has been that if the moisture can get out, so can the heat. And I end up cold. Even with the proper polyester/polypropylene base and a fleece middle layer. At first I though it was because I was buying cheap gear. But even after springing for expensive gear the results were the same. Because I am going to get all sweaty any ways I have chosen a completely water proof coated riding jacket. Keeps the heat in for me. And yes I agree with Neal, wool for socks. Tried different variations of "miracle" fabrics with the same results. Keep up the good work and I love to see the three of you riding together.

Doddy snug as a bug in a rug and smug, Blake the poor fall guy and Neil playing the straight man - brilliant. I don't understand why you change into your bike clothing when you arrive at your location. I put most of my cycle gear on before I leave my house which saves a lot of faffing about when you get to your ride destination. Always take a spare set of clothes for post ride comfort. Sorted!

I've always found I get wetter from wheel spray rather than rain, unless it's a proper downpour, so a decent set of mudguards make a massive difference. All my bikes get a rear Mudhugger for the winter (front one all year round, I live in Wales!!) and it makes a huge difference to how wet I don't get. It may look awful from an aesthetics point of view but it means I can ride for much longer without getting into trouble getting cold. Also I'm a bit of a sweaty rider so the waterproof stuff that Doddy wore can be a bit boil-in-the-bag for me so with mudguards I can drop down to the kit that Neil was wearing. Just keep stops to a minimum and the heat of pedalling keeps me happy the whole ride.

I would like a video on the best winter gloves and socks to wear? Like is this the best recipe for warmth while riding?

How is the Gore fabric effected by dirt and grit over time? Does it lose its breathable characteristics? Would you consider doing a comparison between that stuff and cheaper PU coated fabrics in a future episode?
