How To Pick Mountain Bike Clothing For Beginners

- Are you new to riding or maybe just an old-school rebel who's been resisting forking over a chunk of cash when your "trusty old shorts and shirt haven't let you down yet"?
After years of fighting technical clothing and wanting to look "cool" while riding in street clothes, we finally made the transition to more technically advanced fabrics, materials and riding specific gear and we haven't looked back.
We made this video with a full assortment of @OfficialLeatt mountain bike gear so that we could show why brands have so many options in their line ups. Not all products are the same and while some may be perfect for long, hot days pedaling XC trails, they just aren't built for heavy duty enduro or DH riding in PNW winter conditions.
In this How To video, we hope to offer some insight into the advantages of switching over to mountain bike-specific gear, and helping select the right type of kit for your riding style and terrain.

MTB shorts are made for people with skinny thighs. I haven’t found any that fit me so I just use some shorts that are technically hiking shorts

Shorts and pants need pockets. More than those have. That's why I wear Zoic. I do rock the 6.0 knee pads tho. A bit bulky, but comfortable.
If you ride in the wet check out Leatt's DBX shorts, they are great. I also wear Zoic's most of the time

Well, we didn't really say it wasn't a Leatt commercial, now did we endorse or say how great their products are... But the goal was to have one cohesive offering to show the difference in product lines whereas if we picked 5 jerseys and shorts from 5 brands it wouldn't really showcase that brands have different types of gear for different types of riders.

I bought mx, mtb jerseys on sale. Some of the mx stuff are actually same thing as mtb just different design on livery, some brands have kits that differ, some have mtb spesific stuff, some jerseys have pockets I have 2 jerseys from Alpinestars that has so big pockets on the sides of the hips it fits a Sony xz premium with big case, so you can fit gloves, a buff, or some food there. I have fox 180 mx jersey that is basically see through that creates alot of air flow, it makes a huge difference just moving or walking it cools me down, but when blasting downhills it cools me down even better. I have Mavic CrossMaxx whihh is tightly woven, durable no thin exposed thread, nice for spring autumn. Alpinestars Braap jersey is not as durable, I think it's due to the weave it is not very ventinated but not super tight, but has more exposed thread it is a mix of tight and exposed thus wearing faster. All of my 4 jerseys Tore at the chest collar area. I have a Fox 360 too, nice air flow on that one too, I also have super light, comfy, thin and fragile Fox Air Flex, but one hit by a branch or crash and you have a big hole. I hit a branch it tore a hole. I have review of the jersey mentioned.

Yea I wear bright greens and reds out in the trails because of that reason

what is 1.0 and 20 and all that technical words mean?
Anyone have any recommendations for pants for hot weather? I'd rather have a super breathable pair I can just layer in the cooler months.

Good video! I see you have tested Leatt airflex stealth full shirt and also Ion product scrub amp protector shirt. They seem to offer somewhat similar protection (level 1). Ion doesnt have any padding on chest though? Which one would you recommend, ion or leatt?

kinda annoying that all the elastic waist full stretch trousers are always the most expensive
Is there a big difference between the say 4.0 jerseys and some of the Moto stuff? Seems like several brands make both and while the Moto stuff is louder color wise it also seems cheaper for some reason
There are some differences in materials as well as intended application. For example, a lot of Leatt's moto gear is very track based, and when we ride it on Enduro/off road trails we quickly snag, tear or rip through the thin materials. Can you buy a moto jersey and wear it mountain biking? Absolutely! Last year we rode in a lot of Leatt's moto jerseys at the bike park because we liked some of their all black colors. Either way they're better than a cotton t-shirt! haha.
are there any companies that make non spandex fluffy sided jerseys ?? 5 foot 8 but fluffy and found most xxxl stuff is still made for tiny people
One of the biggest things to note when shopping for cycling gear is the brand and their fit! Some companies have a very road or Euro-inspired fit and could take what some American brands call a Medium and make it an XXL.
Most brands have sizing charts to give an idea as well as images on their site. Even Leatt sizing changes some as we showed in this video, the 4.0 jersey has a slimmer, race fit while the 3.0 is baggier and loose.
Finding the right kit for your body type and style is certainly a hunt, hopefully this helps.

Haha... Angel Fire is definitely on our list of stops we want to make! Hopefully they'll want to host us next year for season 3! COVID made this year a bit of a crapshoot so our options were limited to keep it efficient and within our, surprising we know!, small travel budget. So, here's hoping to next year.
