I'm going through the top 20 Favorite Video Game Songs of all time as voted on by my community. This came in at number 11!
The Donkey Kong Country 2 medley I did back in 2011 is one of the most successful videos on this channel and to this day I recieve lots of amazing comments from it. One of my most proud arrangement choices was teasing the song as the intro as if that was all I was going to do of it but then going all out on it at the end.
Originally I was going to go very to the book with this one, not add too much and really try to just capture the original feel. But then I realized I could slam down a big down tuned A at a really cool moment and the whole arrangement changed into going way too metal towards the end, but I kinda dug it so I kept it.
I usually don't use more than one guitar for leads, but I really wanted to emulate the original song's two leads going back and forth and really tried to utilize the warmth of the Majesty with the Plini Neural DSP plugin and the single coil sound of the Jason Richardson with the Abasi to have two distinct sounds. They ended up getting mixed a bit closer that originally intended but I think it serves the cover this way.
Using two different lead guitars and really low tuned guitars made this cover extremely tricky to mix. I had a really hard time using anything of my normal templates so everything here is pretty much from scratch besides a few elements. I even used two seperate drumsets to try and make a bigger transition for the middle. Let me know if you guys dig it!

I appreciate you letting it build before going over-the-top metal with it. Too often I find metal covers just come out swinging for the fences right out of the gate and it can be jarring and garish. Your restraint elevates this cover. Absolute fire.

I had those concerns too, a lot of metal cover artists really miss the point of what makes the tracks good in the first place. This man really understood the assignment and did the original justice.

It has been years since you covered this originally. Great to see just how far you've come. This is outstanding. I still, to this day, say DKC2 had the greatest videogame soundtrack. The sheer amount of emotion David Wise was able to get out of the 16-bit systems he was working with are still unmatched. Once again, well done Jules.

Vibe, Tone, Everything. I remember your old DKC2 Medley video and this tops the version of stickerbush you did in it. I really think you should do the music from Red-Hot Ride, i think you could translate that to metal and the result would be really cool. You know what this world needs? A cover or even a collaboration of the Captain Falcon theme from F-Zero GX, by FamilyJules, and anyone else tough enough to take a Falcon Punch. There's a gajillion bangers in the OST of the entire franchise, and plenty of room to show it off with a bunch of features.
I think this Stickerbrush Symphony cover is proof enough that FamilyJules can handle faithfulness to source, and make solid references/enhancements. This entire listen was an emotional journey, and you used the metal genre to extract as much as possible out of that.
