- Welcome to The Scale Modelling Cafe. In this quick video, I go through how to make your own Tamiya Extra Thin cement, from exactly the same 2 ingredients at a fraction of the cost.
The Health and Safety bit. This are highly flammable chemicals, great care should be taken when handling them. I make my extra thin outside, wearing PPE and with water and clean up stuff to hand in case of spillage and accidents.

Tamiya extra thin costs me 5 euros for 40ml and really lasts.
I'm a pharmacist so I have a lot of acetone lying around at the shop, I also use it to clean my brushes and I'm sure I can get hold of any chemical I might need but cements are really cheap for how long they last.
And while Tamiya extra thin is my go to cement, the Revell Contacta is equally good in some applications and superior in some others and quite cheaper so a combination of both should make it more affordable for people.
I also see CZcamsrs use copious amounts of the extra thin when only a small amount is more than enough to form a strong bond.
I use the minimum I can!
My Hobby tool cleaner I've been using for a few years, works exactly like TET
Good gouge mate
Until their recent demise, Wilko cellulose thinners was my go-to extra thin substitute; 250 ml for less than cost of 1 bottle of TET.
A well-know CZcamsr recommends Platruct Bondene which was formulated for cementing Plastruct plastic products. I finally ran across some but I haven't had the chance to try it yet.
Cool
I use mthylethelketone (MEK) from an alcohol dispenser. It is very hot and it evaporates quickly if left open. It, too, can be purchased by the litre.
I use lacquer thinner to clean my airbrushes -- it will clean any paint residue, no matter how old.
I do like the workability of Tamia extra-thin so thanks for the tip.
I use lacquer thinner for cleaning too
Good to have some nail polish remover, acetone, available as it can free up superglued photoetch inadvertently glued to fingers.
I was in the plastics industry when super glue came out "yeah it's just cyanoacrylate, we've been using that for years" We bought it in gallon jugs for $20 and they were selling crazy glue for $4.00 for 15 ml lol.
Top tip, cheers Steve.
Hi Jamie. I used to buy the Tamiya airbrush cleaner to use, and for about a year now I have bought the butyl and the acetone and made a mix. In Thailand here. it costs about 4 quid for 2 litres. Cheers
Awesome!
You got it right first time Jamie.
👍
Hi Jamie thanks for the heads up on this - I've been meaning to try this for ages, buying extra thin here in the Kingdom cost around £20 :(😒
It's so expensive!
Hi Jamie, I've been using Tamiya airbrush cleaner recently on my last few builds, no issues. Cheers mate
I'm not surprised mate
great job, ppl will be shocked to know that a lot of the stuff we buy in tiny amounts for huge money are readily available in bulk under their chemical names.
Your math is off though, if you have 1 litre of acetone and 1 litre of butyl acetate that will make 2 litres of extra thin at a 50/50 mix.
another example of this is in woodworking, you use mineral oil as a finish for wood. It is used a lot on cutting boards as it is food safe. Where I live the hardware store wanted $24 CDN for a litre of finisher's choice mineral oil. Well, know what else is 100% pure mineral oil? Baby oil. I went to the grocery store and bought a litre of unscented baby oil for $4.99 Cdn.
I realised when watching it back! 🥴
@@thescalemodellingcafe I thought maybe you were doing liberal math for a second haha.
You know, when they say "elon musk has 118 billion, there's only 8 billion people on earth, he has enough money to give everyone on earth a billion dollars" lol
Been making mine for about a year now. Even made home brew 'set' and 'sol'. Perhaps Jamie, you can do a vid on this chem mixture. 'splice up the mainbrace' buddy.
Cheers Stu
Can you use xylene in place of butyl acetate? Thank you for the vid
Interesting stuff -thanks for the info! BTW, was it just me or is this video very quiet?
Might be just you?
@@thescalemodellingcafeI Hmm, checked all my settings, and have no issues on other videos, so I thought I'd raise the issue in case others had the issue also -as nobody else seems to be reporting this, that's a puzzle! I'll get me hearing trumpet!!
Jamie, Butyl Acetate comes in three forms or isomers: n-Butyl Acetate, sec-Butyl Acetate, and Terry-Butyl Acetate. They have the same chemical formula but slightly different properties and uses. Do you know which version of Butyl Acetate is used in Extra Thin?
n-Butyl Acetate
Thanks!
You legend, that you so much Liam, that really is very kind of you.
@@thescalemodellingcafe my pleasure - you have a great channel :)
....It is made by combining toluene with a mixture of nitric acid and sulfuric acid....
Sounds nasty!
Thanks! Great idea and the savings can be put to something else...like supporting the channel!
Mate, that really is extremely generous of you, thank you ever so much!
I just use neat cellulos thinners. Works just as well as extra thin and 1 litre costs me 9 quid
I seen one guy on youtube said he used cellulose but I thought it would be way too harsh??
@@MrJ027 Yeah, gotta use it sparingly, and takes just that litte bit longer to bond but once you get used to how it works its great. Maybe try it on something you dont mind messing up till you know you can trust it.
Should work but I'd prefer to use a proper glue as it dries much quicker and thus lower risk of shrinkage
@@thescalemodellingcafe with the quality of your work, i'm not suprised you'd spend that little bit extra on a propper glue. but us mere mortals.....well😂
