Plastic is better for intake air temps. Metal heat soaks faster.
Or silicone
I heard plastic pipe works better. The engine heat won't penetrate the plastic pipe vs Metal pipe which absorb heat, it won't be cold air intake anymore. That made sense to me.
I had this exact intake with the pedal commander (no exhaust) and loved it. Throaty V8 esque sound without exhaust imo. Glad you like it. Only reason I don't have anymore is I do trails and offroading and did have some water crossings and decided to avoid the danger of an open air filter and water 😅
I put the RC on my 22 TRD OR about a month ago. Love it. Makes the Taco spicy above 2500RPM. I don't have a pedal commander on it yet, but this on its own it took out a lot of the throttle response lag. I haven't seen a mileage improvement but I find myself more willing to give it the beans and considering that fact, I haven't lost any mileage from it. I walked my 12 year old through the install and she had it done in about an hour. Simple mod that I think is worth it.
Awesome 👍
Does sound great! Thanks for the install info!
I did the KN a few months back, love it.
K&N basically lets in more unfiltered air than the SOB system as that is sealed box and restrictive and blocks the sucking sounds also, K&N causes the ECU to increase fuel to AFR mixture which run richer giving a little more bang, overtime you will notice the exhaust tips gets blacker with soot more than normal due to the rich AFR mixture burn
I put a K&N replacement filter on my '98 Base model, 2.7L ,5 speed 4×4 and disconnecting the snorkel inside the fender well and gained one gear range for any task.
IF ... I need 3rd gear to climb a hill previously I could N0W do it in 4th.
IF ... I needed 4th before, I could N0W do it in 5th and it completely eliminated down shifting on the interstate to maintain 55 MPH.
I was pulling 4,000# from one corner of Pennsylvania to the other !
I have the S&B on my 2018 Tacoma TRD. I had a Spectre that's similar to the one he installed here but I like the S&B better. When I get up on it man is it loud. I'm also getting 2-3mpg more than on stock. The S&B has 2 intakes. The wheel well from the stock box and in the front a ram air going into the grill area. You can always take the plastic top off if you want more airflow.
I have the K&N with single Magnaflo exhaust, I liked the simplicity. I did it for performance and fuel economy. I think I achieved both. When I am cruising on freeway I get around 22 average mpg. It's also very loud, sometimes to loud
12:04 this is my favorite part. Also that is how my grandpa drives😎😂
I went from stock to K&N just over a month ago, and heck yes it made a HUGE difference on my 22 SR5. I also installed a Pedal Commander about a week after, and plan on a duel Flow Master install this summer.
Awesome!!👍👍
Sounds like a pretty cool combo
I bought a pedal commander for my 2016 TRD Sport BUT it would always bring in the CEL alarm. Always had to clear that alarm withna code reader. Got to be such a PITA that I removed it
bought this to go in combination with the AWE true dual exhaust I just installed yesterday - used your referral link and added the sock for it thinking it will fit as well in case I decide to use it
I’m glad that you’ve been converted to K&N now !
Cheers
Great video Rob. Can you please tell me what is the width of the aluminum shield? I have an air compressor mounted next to it and bulky cold air intake won’t fit. Thanks
I trimmed a little bit off the corner of my K&N with hacksaw almost as you did. Both struts close with no problem now. Wish i would have watched your video before I installed my CAF. Would have made the job easier.
I've got the S&B on my 2018 Tacoma TRD Off Road. I like it. I too had to remove the hood strut on the passenger side also. But for now, I use the driver side strut and the hood bar when I'm working under the hood. I'm going to try and figure out a way to put the strut back in while keeping the S&B installed. I may just buy one that goes on a cars hatch back and fabricate a way for it to work in another spot.
It put a smile on ur face..... so it works
I have the same K&N unit installed on my 2nd gen Tacoma V6 ( manual 6 SPD) . To be honest the only time you'll get a performance boost is when you have it full open like when passing. There is a harmonic low frequency sound when you hit the right acceleration in 4th or 5th gear. Look at the charts. You will get about a 5-8 HP boost at open throttle. That's it. For most day to day driving you'll never see a performance boost. Also there is no impact to fuel consumption. I've tracked it for 3 years. It doesn't make it worse or better. You'll get more fuel efficiency boost by keeping your tachometer as close to 2K as you can.
You’ve got clearance, Clarence.
Great video Rob.
Thanks Paul👍
It sounds great 👍 Rob
I was very surprised 👍
I've got the RC air intake on my 2023 Tacoma on my channel and it's LOUD! With a pedal Commander .
Good video! Thank you.
Thanks for watching 👍
I have on my 22 taco is the TRD replacement filter with the k&n short tube to the stock air box with the TRD Airflow Accelerator and a Carven catback it works for me
I also took off the charcoal filter for better airflow
I forgot that i added the KandN filter to my Tacoma as well. Love it.
Nice 👍
I have a k&n series, 57 on my Tacoma v6 it works good it’s just intake pipe plus the filter it works where I live but I would put cold air intake in my tacoma, but where I live it’s gets very dusty pretty fast and I don’t wanna clean it every 5 to 7500 miles
It would be cool to see a completely stock Tacoma lineup to yours and see if there is a difference in acceleration.
It .2 - .3 of a second faster
No difference
Good move, I was always nervous seeing the single strut for the hood. 👍
Just didn’t seem right after all😑
@@RobMotive Very heavy hood!
It is pretty heavy!
Do research on a stillen tru power cold air intake, it's totally enclosed, feeds air through the factory fender port and a ram air intake coming from the passenger side grill, that's what you need, I have a 2020 tundra SR5 with the stillen, independent super 10 Flowmasters and the pedal commander it's so perfect set at city 1
The S&B Cold Air Intake he removed, does exactly the same as yours. It feeds air from the wheel well and from the ram air from the grill. I have the S&B on my 2020 Tacoma TRD Off Road
keep in mind talking to a Toyota mechanic , the engine is computer controlled , with the Map sensor its only going to allow so much air to get into the engine , are to fuel ratio
I take it you got the strut on w/o any issues
For real mpg increase, Fab some underbody air dams and maybe lower it. But that's not easy or fun. Oh well. I wish they would put a tuning knob for light mods......
Metal is ofcourse stronger but it also carries more heat so in this case I'd prefer the plastic.
What is the advantage of the system you put on over the regular stock system except for the noise factor? Could you not just put a K and N filter in place of the air filter in the stock filter box and it would it do the same thing. Does it help any with gas mileage. I kinda doubt it makes any difference in gas mileage or horsepower. Your thoughts?
Time will tell🤔
Sounds good to me!
I have an upgraded exhaust so I get new sounds at low rpm. I can at least notice them.
that is not really a cold air intake , its not completely sealed by the hood , therefor hot air will get sucked in from the engine compartment
The stock SR5 was a little more difficult to remove lol
Anyone do a 0-60 test with the 3 add ons. Pedal Commander , Cold air and exhaust and compared it to stock ?
It’s on the channel (at least the 3 add ons you mention).
I like aluminum intakes better, they sound better, they amplify all the engine noise and sound so cool. I'm don't race or do massive power, but they sound awesome. My dakota had the coolest one, as did my scion. I'm trying to find a good one for my Tacoma, aluminum of course. Gotta have that whooooosh from the throttle body flipping open.
What did u find?
@@houseofgraceworship still looking, and an expanding family too priority over truck mods. Haha.
I’m looking in the $150 range, but bc it’s for a Tacoma, they jack the price up. It’s silly.
@@Korgon2013 nice. my sons 1 year old bday is tomorrow! but now that it’s been a year I’m kinda looking again. I actually decided to not do anything like this and started looking at other mods
Makes sense high end symphony trumpets aren’t using plastic tubing for a reason…..
Did you do any before and after 0 to 60 times? besides sound, was there an improvement in performance?
All it does is look pretty under the hood and add sound.
Yeah but you had a S&B CAI before so probably isnt going to be that crazy of a difference in sound
Not sure how that is exactly a 'cold air' intake since it will clearly suck heat from the engine compartment back through the filter since it's not really sealed up
It also pulls air from the fender inlet.
I just installed this same intake in my 2020 taco and after driving 50 miles or so. The check engine light and trac off light came on. How do I prevent this from happening? Thanks
Most times the cause is installation error. You have to follow the instructions explicitly. Beyond that, it could be many things.
Rrrrrrrrrobertrrrrtoooo, how did u have a shiny head on the removal of the intake, then have hair on your head on the test drive? Hmmm.... Are there two of you??? 🤔🤔🤔
Dude...Real men grow hair at will! 😂😂
@@RobMotive 🤣🤣👍🏽
I've always been told K@N flows better but let's in more dirt. I don't know.
With the filter, shouldn’t be any more vulnerable to dirt that any other 👍
K&ns definitely breathe better but they definitely let some little dirt particles through
Given that they have a closed filter, why do you believe they let any more dirt particles thru than others?
@@RobMotive raced atvs for years an at the dusty tracks with no lid an drilled airboxes, with a k&n after a few motos we’d always see lil dust down the tube on the other side, not only me a lot of riders, so people would run a outerwear on there filter also at the dusty tracks to help this, just my experience with k&ns
@ct350r I’ve seen that before on open air off-road ATV’s👍
What does the new cold air intake actually do other than make a suckin air noise and is it worth installing?
If you can find one used. Mine gets no better fuel economy than one with a stock air box. I have the black edition k&n intake and a cat back mbrp dual exhaust.
Even a stock K&N replacement filter will give you }}}SOUND{{{ ... !
Metal pipe and exposed filter to engine bay heat ..😂😂 ain't no more cold air
Except cold air is forced in thru the outlet in the fender….
You never tried AFE intake
Are you in or near Plano, TX?
I am not.
So did this end up improving your mpg?
They do not.
What’s a good intake that’s carb approved?
How much is the KN system cost
Have a look at the link in the video description.
So Rob, what would you say to the insane amount of hate these intakes get? Even on the Tacomabeast YT channel showing installation, people are tearing it apart.
I think people have unrealistic expectations.
Just an observation. The K&N filter tubing and shroud looks like a downgrade in comparison to the one you had originally.
Matter of opinion I suppose.
I immediately put a K&N intake into Every vehicle that I’ve owned in the last 20 years.
I put one in my 23 Tacoma TRD within a week after I bought it.
They’re Awesome intakes.
What exhaust?
Flowmaster
@@RobMotive sounds good! What model?
Have a look: czcams.com/video/BRGZVheppbc/video.html
Did you have to account after trimming the Box and adding the gasket?
Hey Rob! Have you seen the video out of L.A. where a catalytic converter thief dies during the commission of his crime?
It is on the local fox news channel.
Put a throttle body spacer on and you’ll be amazed!
If you want it loud just take the exhaust off.
That’s the thing…I didn’t want it loud…just louder👍
either you lease vehicles or you trade them out..or you borrow them and do work...because I have not watched your video's for a while and came across this an you changing Tacoma's like you change underwear.
I may or may not have a problem 😂
This is the exact opposite of a cold air intake. The stock is more of a cold air intake as it draws air from the wheel well into an enclosed box. Much like the one you just pulled off. This thing doesn't really do that at all. It draws air from the engine compartment like the old-fashioned air boxes did and is the exact opposite of a cold-air intake. This thing is an actual step backwards in what you would want in a performance air intake system. Although I guess it doesn't matter too much since the Tacoma doesn't exactly have a performance tuned engine in it.
Actually, it feeds the engine with a finely calibrated mixture of cold air fed in from the fender and warm air from the engine. It’s ideal for performance combustion😂
@@RobMotive It's doing none of that. It's a free-floating filter behind a near worthless heat shield. An actual cold-air intake nearly entirely isolates the air intake from the engine bay's hot air. The reason being is that the colder the air, the denser the air which improves combustion if you have a setup that can really use it. On an NA motor like ours, it's mostly wasted money.
I would think going at a slower speed it would draw more hot air in from the engine compartment but at higher speeds the mix as RM states might be acceptable for the air temp mix. Wonder what happens when driving from AZ through NM in the summer....no cold air except in the cab with A/C on.
Regardless of temp of air, it definitely increases volume and speed of air drawn in, vs the restrictive oem air box and filter. Why u can feel more power at low rpms and less throttle lag. But mainly, its usually 2mpg increase and a washable reusable air filter and the sound is awesome. Its worth $150 for the RC, not $300-400 though
@@tieoneon1614 It really doesn't increase volume of air. That would then require the engine to automatically increase fuel consumption to keep the same air : fuel ratio as what it's programmed for which would actually decrease fuel efficiency but would increase power. Any perceived performance increases are purely placebo. It'd have to be forced induction or RAM air at speed to get more air into the engine than it's requiring of the system.
can I buy your old s&b? 😜
Are you local to Harlingen Texas?
@@RobMotive suburb of Portland, OR 😔
That’s too bad. I’ll only sell locally on this.
@@RobMotive now worries. Thanks!

Your opinion on the material shows your lack of knowledge on heat dissipation and thermo dynamics. The metal will retain hesmat longer and youll have heat soak issues.
Dude…if you’re going to question my knowledge on anything you really should use proper punctuation and proofread your own comments. 😂
