From one software engineer to another, I'm literally following your roadmap. Sadly people don't realize your not increasing the amount of air your just making it easier for the air to flow and the engine to get what it needs. plus you can get the same results by just dropping in a K&N oiled filter without buying the TDR kit. Plus if you modify your original air entrance guard (see time stamp 9:14) and cut the splash guard (the half cup looking part off) you'll remove air floe restriction/turbulence. The only true way to increase air volume into the engine is with a turbo or a super charger. Yet with that all said you keep doing what you do Chloe. The look is nice and modding your vehicle is making it truly yours. keep up the good videos, and keep living the taco life.

    • @saysbadman
      @saysbadman Před 2 měsíci

      That's fairly true. With colder air it is denser which is why fuel economy drops in the winter. You will need more fuel with colder denser air, but you'll get a small bump in power. She claimed better fuel economy, but there could be a number of factors. So I do not know. I'll have to go back to see all the parts included with the kit, but it just looked like the upper air box, red colored couplers, the "performance" air filter, and the horn shaped rubber piece that attached to the bottom of the air box. I think she reused the middle part of the stock intake that includes the resonator box. I'll have to go back and look, but if it came with a new resonator box that would account for a different sound.
      I think the magic part is probably that horn shaped rubber piece if the kit does make any extra power. Watching people build cars, and messing with plenum shape/size, intake runner size/length, and the opening horn shape on individual throttle bodies affect horse power. Sure that kit may suck in a bit more water than the stock configuration, but it shouldn't hurt anything unless you submerge it or maybe block it with mud. Unless you hydrolock your engine, a bit of moisture should just steam clean your piston, and then exit the exhaust.
      What I like about this system is it opens up the intake, and maybe gets cooler air unlike an aftermarket cold air intake with a long tube. A long tube may get colder air, but throttle response suffers because it has to equalize the pressure of that longer tube where as a short intake would have better response. A short ram intake is subject to heat soak though.
      Edit; went back to look at the parts 2:38 it seems it comes with that middle black tube. So after measuring the tube diameter, and if it is the same you could stay with stock sound or go with the trd kit middle pipe. I'VE NEVER LAID HANDS ON THE KIT, but I would expect the only difference would be the resonator. You wouldn't hear the sound difference at the exhaust, but rather in the engine bay.

    I put this upgraded intake together with the TRD Pro exhaust on my 2019 TRD 4X4 and had the same outcomes. Additional Gas mileage is between 2 to 3 mpg with a noticeable improvement in acceleration. However these mods are not cheap and you need to weigh that expense against suspension upgrades and accessories you may need for overlanding and camping. Bottom line, if you have the coinage, do it.

    Report back in a month or two when your ECU has reprogrammed to account for the increased airflow into the engine. I've tried a couple of intakes, both Injen and K&N. Both provided a bit louder intake noise and what I thought was a bit more torque but after a few hundred miles the trucks performance returned to normal if not a little less responsive. The only way intakes and high flow filters increase power correctly is to have the ECU retuned. It looks cool but I'm not sure looking cool under the hood increases performance or gas mileage.

    Chloe; I am amazed at the push-back on the TRD CAI. Its not TRULY a cold air intake but its volume is bigger. I experienced a 1.5-2 mpg uptick immediately with the CAI. Knowing though that what goes in must come out, I added the CAT back TRD exhaust. The mpg improvement of the two improvements is still 1.5 mpg, it sounds pretty mellow, it drives with a bit more power which also seemed to have eliminated the transmission downshifting issue people complain about. If people can stomach the $900 or so that the two items will cost (self installed), these are WELL worth it. I LOVE this truck.

    I have an S&B Cold Air Intake (oil filter), and it gave me 1-2 mpg as well in addition to being a little louder and more responsive throttle. The TRD intake isn't really much different from the standard stock cold air intake. And yes, the stock air box pulls air from your wheel well, not your engine bay, and is a cold air intake as well.
    The biggest difference here is the trd filter.

    I like this intake but I don’t like the price. It looks great! I opted for a K&N intake that uses the stock air box and replaces the intake tube that eliminates the resonator box. I also got the intake air accelerator as a separate part. The K&N filter is basically the same as the TRD filter. In fact I believe K&N manufacturers the Toyota filter. I also noticed much better throttle response with this intake. I believe the stock Toyota filter is very restrictive! The bellows connector is replace by two flexible rubber connectors that are straight. I believe by eliminating the the bellows and resonator box you get a straight flow to the throttle body with less turbulence. K&N dyno tested this intake and got approximately 10hp and 10 foot pounds of torque increase. Third gen Tacoma’s have notoriously sluggish throttle response at light throttle application due to the part time Atkinson cycle engine. Replacing the stock intake solves this problem partially. You still feel a surge of power with full throttle acceleration when the cam phasers switch the cams back to Otto cycle. To me it feels like turbo lag. I also have a TRD exhaust that sounds great, especially with this intake! The K&N was about half the price! This intake is CARB certified so it will pass smog in California. Had the TRD intake been closer in price I probably would have bought it. I like the look!

    I went the DIY route. From most reviews/feedback most said sound was the main difference. So instead of dropping a few hundred for sound (possibly a few HP) I spent like $80, that included the TRD filter, 1 piece of the TRD tubing, the fender snorkel piece, and the coupler .

    I have almost the same exact truck as you, except mine is a 2023. Same Wheels and everything. Yet I get way lower mpg. I did get an aftermarket tune, in order to mitigate some of that wonky throttle response and electric transmission shifting times (courtesy of you one of your videos actually), and it did help with many things. Yet I still get crap mpg. I’m sitting around 12pmg on average. I am a bit heavy on the accelerator, but nothing too crazy

But the greatest mod was the kd max tune, which is a modified version of the ov tune, suppose to be even better. I pull with mine and it is a big difference. Great video too.

If a CAI gave you 5 more mpg you can bet your ass it would come stock on your truck already.....Don't you think that would be a huge selling point for the manufactures?

    Been using K&N filters on my Off-road vehicles for years. Not surprising that Toyota/Sparks is using a similar air filter. Higher airflow through the filters and reusability.
    So the question is, did it actually help your gas mileage or just seemed like it. Smoother power band is definitely nice but with the current gas prices and my daily commute, an increase in fuel efficiency would be the biggest gain.
