My Oxford Personal Statement & Mistakes To Avoid | Ep.4 Oxbridge App. Series

  • Welcome to the FOURTH episode of my Oxbridge Application Series! 📌 In this episode, I shared my Oxford personal statement and the things I wished I had done with it. Not gonna lie, I am quite embarrassed that 6 months ago I called this "the" best essay I've ever written. However, I take it as a sign that I myself has also grown - not only in my understanding of the topic but also in maturing my perspective and knowledge!
Even though I didn't get into Oxford, I want to still share this with you because it is a different style of writing as compared to Cambridge. When I submitted this one, I thought I wouldn't get into Cambridge because of how different and more academic this one seemed. But the result surprised me! I got into Cambridge but not Oxford. This just goes to show that a personal statement isn't everything and our judgement is probably not the most accurate. The application considers YOU as an individual - as a whole! Not just by some 800-words statement of purpose.
A few words of warning: if you watch this and think "oh crap she already wrote a pretty good one, how can I top it off if this essay isn't accepted by Oxford" - PLEASE, again, your application is reviewed as a whole and not just by your essay. The point is not to create something more extravagant than this, but to create one that REFLECTS YOU as an individual and as a SCHOLAR!
đŸ“© If you're looking for someone to review your essay, I do offer a personal statement/statement of purpose/or any university admission essay review service (paid). Drop me an email (see below) if you are interested.

Your essay was beautiful! After watching a video by an Oxford professor who is also an admissions officer, I think the main point he emphasized especially for post grad students is the need to tell more about what you want to research rather than what’s already been said in the field by other scholars. In this case it’ll be very helpful and important to state clearly your research questions and how you wish to explore them (methods, frameworks etc.), your geographical or demographic area of focus and so on. It will also help to pinpoint one aspect within education inequality that you would like to explore since the topic of education inequality in itself is very broad. :)

Hi Shafaat, thank you for sharing your perspective and for pointing that out! It's definitely a gap I had overlooked when writing this essay - hope everyone else who sees this can avoid my mistake 😆

@@rizkaazizah7869 I think it was “How to write a killer personal statement” by a professor from Jesus College Oxford who is also an admissions officer. Good luck! 😊

Going through your PS videos I see you have developed a pattern to writing the statement from a problem focus essay (inequality) and the analogies( rising tides/ Chess) and the A-B-A structure. Beautiful essays. Thanks for the help

I really like your video and thank you so much for sharing! But I just want to ask that writing a personal statement is different from writing an essay, right?
