getting a job was HARD... why I left the UK after my master's

  • I opened up about my struggles with job application - particularly also on why I left the UK and decided to move to Singapore. I left out quite some details about how I felt just because I didn't want to make this video about how tough and sad the time was for me.. but trust me when I said my confidence was totally wrecked.
Nevertheless, only now, in hindsight, can I say that I truly needed those rejections and blow. Because internally I needed that waking-up to recentre and humble myself again and again.
I understand being able to even "take my time" was out of privilege - I had my parents' support and a roof over my head, and they could still sustain me for a few months without me generating any income. To which I am grateful for. But what I want to share is that sometimes things seem bleak and neverending, because we're used to an instant feedback loop. Applying for jobs is a different thing. And when your identity latches so much on it, it's extremely hard.
But, this too has passed. And all is well :)

I am a Singaporean living in another country. I stumbled onto your video two years ago as I am also studying in economics 🤣 I am a mature student, working in my 20s before resuming my college studies in my 30s. So YES, your main message to "take your time" absolutely resonates!
And yes, the job market is unfortunately a number game. Life is a timing game. I hope Singapore has been kind to you. Don't feel shy to rant about us Singapore and thank you for sharing your journey. You are not alone!

Your story really resonate with me, I actually had something similar going on; did my undergrad in Chem the UK, didn't work whilst studying, in my 3rd year I have been involved with research and finish my degree with a First. 6 months after finishing uni, my paper get published, but in the meantime searching for jobs, but since I don't have any work experience and only research experience, no one is willing to accept me, even for research role. Applied to a PhD in Chem+Data Science after 8 months and the interview went horribly, its now almost a year since I graduate and still no jobs. I am considering moving back

Tq for being so open about the misses and not just the hits. To be fair, you weren't entirely sidelined by the companies you applied for. You were actually headhunted, and for a few of the roles, you actually rejected outright. Kudos.

Persis sama kondisi saya sama kak Viancqa (cuma saya s1).

Wah kak jadi khawatir. Saya Kan Lulus Dari Islamic Banking yah kak but not yet have Experience in NGO Atau lsm apapun, sedangkan saya Rencana nya mau ambil S2 dulu Di 3 kampus incaran Aku, Columbia University, Emory University,Lund University dengan Jurusan Praktek Pembangunan dengan Asumsi ketika Aku Lulus nanti Aku bisa Langsung diterima Bekerja Di NGO Lokal (memulainya Dari Sana) kemudian Menggapai karir Aku kerja Di Oxfam menjadi Consultant dilapangan. Apakah ITU make sense kak?

I'd say jalanin aja. Kalau sedang apply2 sekarang utk S2, jalanin. Sambilan apply kerja juga jalanin aja. See where you land nanti baru dipilih mana yang terbaik utk situasi kamu saat ini.
Good luck!

@@Viancqa makasih banyak Ka Viancqa masukannya. Aku mengambil S2 sebenarnya lebih kearah Ilmu nya sih Kak, kurikulum kurikulum Yang disediakan lebih practical kak, Kalau Aku ambil kerja professional Langsung maka Aku Gak punya kemampuan teori dasar Yang konsisten kak, nah diperkuliahan Kan Aku akan belaajr bagaimana Pembangunan dinegara berkembang strategy Dan lain Sebagai nya. Seperti kak mengapa Aku bilang S2 itu penting

Halooo Kak Viancqa!
