    As always killer content and a timely video. We just picked up an off lease GX with perfect paint and we are working on an overland build. I was tormenting on how to preserve the paint. I think I’ll take the dive with this more robust film. I hope I can be as Zen on the install as you were.

      Thanks 🙏 Rob! I think ruggedized vinyl wrap will be a good option. Some things I didn’t mention in the video is that highly bended shapes like the front and rear bumpers can be a pain. Also, when you bend the film, a day later it’s likely to pull. Buy some 3M vinyl sealant to prevent pull. If areas do pull, just reheat the film, stretch, use edge sealant, and then cut off the excess. The beautiful thing about using vinyl film is that you can fix mistakes 👍

      @@JonDZ_Adventuring Great pointers - thanks again! Love your channel and hope to run into you sometime out on the trail when we roll down from the Bay Area. I'm amazed at the capability of your rig - I had Hondas for decades and got pretty close to pulling the trigger on one for a family/overland build once I saw what you could do. But the the allure of a truck caught me so now I have a ultra reliable soccer mom Overlander that gets 16mpg : (

    Great info. I've found myself thinking about this as I'm looking at replacing my Forester and starting over with an unscratched rig. Even if the film got scratched, it would be nice to know I'm not demolishing the paint. Boy, I just don't know if I have the patience and dexterity to work with those sheets of film. I struggle just to put clean sheets on the bed. But I sure do like the idea of eventually being able to peel off the scratched vinyl and find the unmarred paint underneath. Hmm.

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  Před 3 lety +1

      Donald, I’m so excited about your next rig choice! From you live chat yesterday, it seems like you’ll be going one of the following directions:
      A.) SH Forester - you’re old system was tried and true, and you have no issue sleeping in the gazelle tent.
      B.) Small/medium size truck - I think this option makes a lot of sense for a vehicle sleep system. It’s just that fuel economy and daily driveability will be an issue.
      C.) Van - sounds like a good option, but the only vans with AWD/4WD are the bigger ones.
      You have a big decision in front of you. I know cost will also play a factor. You know the reason why I purchased the Passport, dollar for dollar for a “NEW” vehicle and with “capability” and “reliability” in mind, it was the Best Buy and best AWD option. I have 62K miles on it now and not one issue. BUT... it’s a $38k vehicle, and the resale is insane right now. Even if you find a Passport Sport AWD with 30k miles it will still go for about $28K, which is only $5k off a brand new one. Another vehicle id recommend is the Rav4 adventure, but those go for $35k brand new, and why buy one of those when you can get a Passport. All other AWD vehicles that predate these vehicles aren’t so capable or as fuel efficient (passport is rated for 23mpg highway but after modifications, I’m still getting 23, stock people are getting 27-29mpg because of VCM).
      My recommendation is to get a 2nd Gen Nissan Xterra for $4-7K. I know you don’t want a mid sized SUV but atleast it’ll be a more stout option to support a RTT. With all the money you save, you can pick up an iKamper RTT. Plenty of space! And the IKamper deploys in 30 seconds!
      Donald! Whatever vehicle you choose I will offer my services to help you vinyl wrap your ride! It’ll be a good reason for me to come out there. I’m serious! Let’s DO THIS 😃!

    Builder's paper is a great idea! Didn't think of that. I plan to do vinyl wrap on the 4runner soon. The challenge of the 4Runner is that the body side panels runs from the windshield all the way to the rear. I don't want to get more than I need to so I have to make precise cutting on the vinyl for the body panel and doors in order to conserve.

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  Před 3 lety +1

      Good luck Francis! Do you have the current gen 4runner! The front grille wills be quite the challenge. You will have to cut sections for the grille, and I highly recommend avery’s rugged vinyl wrap because overlapping isn’t as noticeable compared to traditional wrap. Also, pick up some 3M vinyl edge sealant. When you wrap things that require stretching, it will tend to pull and lift. The sealant will lock it in.

      The wrap I have is “Marsh Green”. In the sunlight it looks like olive drab, but in the dark it looks like a darker green. There’s 4 colors: Obsidian black, Cement Grey, Marsh green (what I have) and Combat green. On their website, you’d think I’d have the combat green, but I’m really running Marsh. These films look different in person. I’d recommend ordering samples. By the way, I ordered off of metrorestyling. They seem to have the best pricing.

    @ChuckUnderFire Před 2 lety

    This is probably crazy to consider, but what would it take to just spray paint the car? Maybe raptor or some kind of rhino liner coat… maybe just bedliner… I’m thinking the fix for scratches after would be simple… rattle can..

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  Před 2 lety +4

      It’s been done before, but it’s ugly, and looks dingy after a while. You also have to do a lot of prep work. Touch ups are easy with rugged vinyl, which looks like Raptor liner. All you do is cut out a shape and then insert another piece. Regular smooth vinyl isn’t touch-up-able.
      To make Raptor liner look good, you’ll need to periodically spray clear coat. Otherwise it looks really bad. We’ve all seen Raptor liner vehicles before. I see less and less of them, probably for a reason.

      @ChuckUnderFire Před 2 lety +1

      @@JonDZ_Adventuring ok. Touch ups blows my mind a bit. That sounds amazing! Between that, and seeing you finally give up the paint pole awning for a 180 has me considering starting to save some money.

      @@ChuckUnderFire Oh my! I remember the paint pole awning! Hahaha! I was able to buy the 180 degree awning on sale for $500. I believe they are a bit pricier now a days. This awning has been an integral part of my adventures. I attached an awning wall (... that I bought for $300), and when combined with a 50,000 BTU propane fire pit, it lets me continue my adventures during cold winter temperatures. I never hesitate to deploy it, because it's so easy set up. It's one of my favorite pieces of gear.
