I think there was a scene in the end credits of an episode where marris had secluded herself in a sensory deprivation tank for reasons (I can't remember for the life of me) and Niles opens it to hand her a wine glass and you can see her hand taking it. I think that was the most we've ever seen of her on screen.

I felt they missed out of a great joke in Season 9 when they visited the Cheers gang in Boston. Niles and Norm could have talked about Maris and Vera. "You mean nobody has ever seen your wife in person? That seems incredibly peculiar and unrealistic" or something like that.
Maris is much more important than Verra from Cheers. And they gave an awesome story and send off for her in season 11. One of the best characters never to be shown on-screen.

Personally I've thought for years that Shelley Duvall could have played Maris: Duvall is really thin, really pale, and can certainly play bizarre and/or high-strung characters. Plus I would have loved to see her, Shelley Long and Bebe Neuwirth all together in one scene!

How Roz and Niles jibed at each other in the early seasons could have easily been written as comeback remarks and bickering from Niles and Maris, not to mention half the descriptions Niles uses for Maris's absence "can't produce saliva" etc, can easily be attributed to how he initially felt about Roz. Also, it plays well in the episode where Roz charades as Maris being married to Fraiser to make out Niles is with Daphne to get rid of Clive. It would have given proper displays of a woman Fraiser finds friendship in (Roz) and one he couldn't stand (Maris). However, yes, for all the physical descriptions, they are all too beautiful.

Niles and Frasier both married women they felt resembled their mothers in some way. Their mother was a bright sophisticated woman. Maris and Lilith are both " high born" and " cultured" but lacking in other character traits like loyalty or warmth.
I always, always thought : " If they ever show Maris, they'll use BEBE NEUWIRTH and no one - except maybe Roz and Daphne - will notice ' Augghh - It's Lilith again ! '

It would have been funny if they introduced her in the final episode and she was just this charming and completely normal woman, and the audience realizes that all of the other characters have been either just unfairly bullying her for the entire show, or else sharing an inside joke not shared earlier with the audience at large.

Think about what David Hyde Pierce says in this video a sitcom based on a character that you never see. When he said Fraser goes off the air she’ll probably have her own sitcom. Because you if think about it every episode she wasn’t in was actually an episode that centered around Maris and it did with such fluidity.
Without seeing her once or hearing her voice she was the strongest character on the show. And that, my friends, is called good writing. The likes of which hasn’t been seen since HBO plagiarized GRRM’s Game of Thrones

After many a years of watching Fraiser I often thought that maybe the writers of the show had watch or been a fan of Minder a UK series that was around in the early 80ts about a guy called Aurther Daley a dodgy dishonest business man and his Minder Terry McCann. Auther Daley always mentioned his wife as "her indoors" or "her that shall be obeyed" but we the audience never actually saw his wife even though she was a butt of alot of his jokes. Just a thought.

Niles and Frasier both married women they felt resembled their mothers in some way. Their mother was a bright sophisticated woman. Maris and Lilith are both " high born" and " cultured" but lacking in other character traits like loyalty or warmth.

+iamintheburg true. i always thought that they could just change bebe up a little bit and that's maris. lol. after all if memory serves well frasier and niles pretty much said that they married similar women. at least to a degree. maris was even more extreme than lilith but bebe could pull it off. ;)
Why on earth would they use her? Maris was described as much more thin, frail, and frigid.
It would have been funny if they introduced her in the final episode and she was just this charming and completely normal woman, and the audience realizes that all of the other characters have been either just unfairly bullying her for the entire show, or else sharing an inside joke not shared earlier with the audience at large.
No that'd be a godawful idea lol.
Can you imagine if they found a women to portray Maris and have Lilith, bebe, Shelley long, roz and daphne all in one scene....

Im glad they decided not to show Maris. The descriptions from Niles are worth the skipping of her.
My favorite description of Maris is when Niles brings a greyhound home, Martin walks in and asks what it is and Frasier says, "Niles saw this in the pet store and had an inexplicable attraction. " Martin says, "You can see its ribs." Frasier says, "Hint number one."
Think about what David Hyde Pierce says in this video a sitcom based on a character that you never see. When he said Fraser goes off the air she’ll probably have her own sitcom. Because you if think about it every episode she wasn’t in was actually an episode that centered around Maris and it did with such fluidity.
Without seeing her once or hearing her voice she was the strongest character on the show. And that, my friends, is called good writing. The likes of which hasn’t been seen since HBO plagiarized GRRM’s Game of Thrones

I have always pictured Maris as Madeline Khan.
The lore for that was that Lilith was created at the same time as Adam, from the same dirt. But she didn't want to be subservient to Adam, so she left, and wouldn't return to the Garden after mating with the Archangel Samael.
The Hewbrew folklore regarding this is that she married/mated with the Archangel Samael. Not Satan. Other writings says she was the love interest of Satan and Lucifer, who are actually the same being. Other legends about Lilith is that it is generally thought to be related to a class of female demon.
After many a years of watching Fraiser I often thought that maybe the writers of the show had watch or been a fan of Minder a UK series that was around in the early 80ts about a guy called Aurther Daley a dodgy dishonest business man and his Minder Terry McCann. Auther Daley always mentioned his wife as "her indoors" or "her that shall be obeyed" but we the audience never actually saw his wife even though she was a butt of alot of his jokes. Just a thought.
Myrt from Fibber McGee and Molly was only heard in one episode, and the title characters did not recognize her.

It wasn't Maris...it was" Vera" (Norm's wife) on CHEERS. It was a T-Day episode with "Diane" still on the show. One of the BEST Cheers' episodes!! :)
