David Hyde Pierce was not only amazing at delivering a line, but he was top-notch at incorporating the details and nuance of his character. For me, he will also always be one of the gold standards in physical comedy. He took what could have just been a lovable character and turned him into an icon.

Or make it funny, "I'm far too silly to be awkward."

More than a foil it allowed the Frasier character to adapt from Cheers to Frasier so easily and smoothly. When Frasier first appeared on Cheers he was Niles in every which way and direction but the character adapted to the bar scene that was Cheers. When the spin off happened it allowed Frasier to develop from the bar scene to being adaptable to Niles who was also his best friend as well as brother in Frasier. Niles did so much for the Frasier character development and they were able to find a character that looked like Frasier from the early seasons of Cheers.

David really ought to have been the breakout star. Not that the rest of the cast didn't do a good job, but he was simply on another level. Between him and the character of Niles, he's the best thing on the show.

I'd have to disagree. Kelsey is the best actor I have ever seen. As even David conceded at the Emmys, it's a lot harder to be the lead than a supporting actor. Supporting actors can be outrageous, but if you don't have that stabilizing force for the supporting actor then the show craters. Don Knotts is considered one of the best sidekicks of all time, but 30 minutes of Barney Fife every week would've killed the show.

@@rocketman0324 Kelsey was mediocre in Cheers , is mediocre in Frasier, and is mediocre in everything he's done since Frasier. He's just not very good. The recent reports about bringing Frasier back without the rest of the cast, particularly Niles, almost certainly mean we'll get to see more mediocrity.

I'll let the facts speak for themselves. The reason he got his own show is because the creator's of Cheers thought he was so good. Grammer has received at least 45 nominations for major awards and has won on 18 occasions. He has received 14 individual Emmy Award nominations for four different television shows (plus an additional two as part of the Frasier ensemble) and has won five times.

That was the whole premise of the "Brother from another series" episode. Also, the reason why you had to have watched the first few seasons of Fraiser to get the joke of Cecil's response to Bart.
      "Guess who?"
      "Maris."
It was the whole idea of going from psychiatry to psychotic (or criminally insane). How would it be if the psychiatrists were their patients?
To be fair, that is the very paradox of what makes Fraiser such a good show. He tries to help others with their problems, yet doesn't know how to help himself.
In my opinion, it is what made Fraiser and Niles so good together. Each being in the same profession, they try to lean on each other to figure out their problems.
It also shows the true breakdown when each can't cope any more and use different cries for help.
Frasier shuts himself away, as he is so used to dealing with others, while Niles feels he needs to be liberated and freed, a perfect example is the stripping in the coffee shop, due to an anxiety attack.
Yes, I am doing what they do and analysing it, but it is such a good show.

Niles was the perfect picture of the smart kid in class who was so horribly picked on that eventually he developed one hell of a nasty bite.

I have always ABSOLUTELY LOVED NILES!!!!! What a brilliant actor!!!!
I can still picture Niles laid out on a bed of live koi! His awesome performance in the lunch with the geniuses, when he took too much "parchment mite" allergy medication...At the end of that episode, Frazier said they had to pay the restaurant an added $1000 in damages, cause as they were leaving Niles knocked over the aquarium!!!!...
And his incredible performance when his trousers caught on fire on the ironing board...just an incredibly genius actor!!!!
This whole show series was absolute pure genius!!!!!
