Honestly paying 1-2 euros for it, so like 25-50czk would be totally fair and would setback the repair costs and even make some profit for the city hall.
I do t think it’s the cost of repairs that is the problem I think it’s the over crowding even if they don’t say it
@@matthewbass8152 I doubt it is even that. We currently have very conservative city government with the leading party (ODS) being linked to corruption scandlas in the past. I think they just want as little oversight to what is happening in city hall as possible.
@@Skawagon Butbutbut... if the city hall were teeming with crowds of tourists from dawn till dusk, just imagine how much easier it would be to organize all kinds of shady meetings, without even having to leave your office. Your questionable guests would just mingle with the tourists, and no-one would be the wiser! No more meeting Pro-Russian lobbyists in corner pubs in the rain, or late evening dinners at a Vyšehrad restaurant during the lockup.
That's what I call a big-brain play, worthy of big-brained corrupt politicians, just like Prague City Council has... /jk
That elevator in the City Hall is just meters from offices of some deputies and the design of corridors does not allow to separate comfortably tourist flow and office flow. It would need to disable depart in several floors or something more problematic.
(...)
Nevertheless, recent changes in security policy just put the most of the building including elevator to the secured area, so no more tourists in the lift ever.
Make it 20 euros so it won't be too crowded. Budget-conscious tourists can go to the 25 other elevators FOR FREE
I can imagine it wasn't about single tourists going the loop but probably groups of people cramming in one stall together. That could break it. Some people have no sense (as seen by the tourist interaction lmao) and no respect.
We all know a certain demographic of tourists that gives their country a bad name
@@playmakersmusic who?
@@playmakersmusic This could literally be so many countries

How many government officials does it take to turn on an elevator that runs automatically? The answer is not on TikTok.
Someone should build a 3 story Paternoster elevator in an open area. Just the elevator by itself in a glass box that goes nowhere. Then charge tourists 10 euro a ride. You would be rich.
From me you get only a face palm. 10 €? In Greece it's really priceless.
@@irondasgr Then you don't know the amount of money tourists will pay for random things like this lol
I'm working in a (public) building with a pater noster and it's ALWAYS broken. It's now prohibited too to people not working there to use it.
The reason is not the amount of people riding it, but people who have never used it before using it and using it wrong. Getting their foot stuck, trying to slow it down, going on it with a huge suitcase - and yes, these are all things that actually happened and caused damage and required the pater noster to be repaired. That costs money and we can't use the elevator anymore.
When someone says "people can't be that stupid" I always reply "you can't even imagine how stupid people are" 😀
this is exactly what i thought when Janek started disputing "tourists broke it"
Being from Italy, I can confirm Janek is too indulgent. Many tourists act dumb and break shit all the time because they don't read signs or just want to be the center of attention - not implying its just them, there are many among the locals too.
@@dingodash4096 I can't imagine how big problem with overtourism you have in Venice, but in Prague, it's also pretty bad I would say. I am originally from Prague, but I don't live there anymore, but when I visit Prague, it's even more visible for me than before, nobody speaks Czech there, in center you always see those drinking parties of British/German/Danish people who are constantly screaming and you have bad feeling from them, like they can be aggressive when you just badly look at them.
And ofcourse now, you don't know if someone is a russian tourist or ukrainian refugee, it's everything very confusing and it causes misunderstandings.
About damaging things - just those stupid lovelocks are enough, everyone adds some 100g lock and at the end, it will break reailing on the bridge, so yes, overtourism really destroys cities when everyone acts like a sheep.
@@dingodash4096 I remember when a guy drove the spanish historic stairs in a car. Some people are dumb, it cant be helped.
This is why I hate travel influencers, tiktokers , instagrammers as they are a plague destroying one destination after another. They have no feeling for local people, only for their clicks and likes.
This is why I became an "Outfluencer", warning people because of the danger of travelling and destinations.

Can you really call yourself an "outfluencer" if you only have 1 video that was uploaded 5 years ago.
@@SatoshiAR Yes, that is the reason why I do not upload videos. I am an outfluencer, my aim is to protect destinations from people with "bucket lists" and keep them for the people who are really interested.
Yes, and I am sometimes happy that The Islamic Republic of Iran has such bad reputation in western media. It keeps the "bucket list people" away.
It took me 30 seconds to Google the other elevators.

yes. But young people doesnt use google for searching for informations. For more than half of them primary information source is tik tok. Can confirm, just did the same (in the same language). And I purposely searched like I knew almost nothing about it "elevators that never stops Prague location" and I had multiple addresses.
I went to Prague a month ago and tried every address I could find and none of them were currently working …

Wow. As someone old enough that I had to do research in libraries on microfiche and encyclopedias, I can’t believe people don’t know how to search the internet. Not everything needs to be handed to you on a silver platter.
People are upset about this issue too. Like honest to god
i teach at a high school here in prague, and it's shocking how many students, who are glued to their phones, can't do basic google searches...
It is surprising and depressing, however, he could have handled those foreign tourists (who hardly understood english) better and less condescending .
@@penguinsushi8442 well, he’s an honest guide… I live and work in touristy parts of Prague and totally understand his frustration - people have €1000 phones and can’t use basic functions like maps, translator and google search. My highlight is a guy asking for directions to the castle, using a PHOTO of a classic PAPER MAP in the phone’s gallery to navigate. Not to mention the castle was clearly visible from the point where we were standing…
It is crazy. I actually thought we were out of the age where we had to explain what a web browser is.
For some people, the internet is just apps. 😵💫
A small fee is reasonable. One could even install one within a block of the same place, allowing it to be a new tourist site, while allowing business to take place at the other. The idea of weekends or evenings also makes sense. One should ensure that the elevator can serve it's primary purpose to those who work in that building, but also those going there for official business. If one allowed it to be open during the workday, I would expect them to operate below full capacity and that those who work there could have immediate access. But if someone who lived in the area had reason to meet with someone there, they should also have a way to avoid any line or fee.
I'm not sure these elevators are still being made. But yes, great point. Install one going up to one of those lookout towers and charge an extra fee to use the elevator. You won't necessarily get *more* tourists to that location, so it won't cause extra congestion; but you'll get a greater spend per tourist.
in Prague a "small fee" is 250KC
From what I heard they complained tourists roam the halls and go into offices, which I agree must be irritating, and the price will be €10.
Seven years ago my Family travelled on a summer trip to London, Dubrovnik, Paris and Prague from Toronto Canada. While the “kids” (now 18 and 24) remember Buckingham palace, Dubrovnik’s city walls , the Eiffel tower and the Louvre, one of the strongest memories from that trip is the paternoster elevator in Prague!
There are paternosters in most countries in Europe. There is even one in London, although it seems to be out of service a lot of the time. I find it interesting how most of these paternosters go unnoticed, yet just one, out of the many, in Prague has become a location for tourists to visit.
@@benolifts Yes, they are really not a big deal imo. My uni library had one, but some people seem to lose their shit when they see it.

As an American I'm wondering can the general Prague public not use the building for city business? This effectively shuts the citizens off from their govt doesn't it? What exactly is done in the building business wise?
in a different building in the center, there's one for the Prague 1 district office (we got our marriage license there). All buildings of couse have stairs, but for handicapped people (or ones with strollers) it's a challenge.
I believe that in this building there are only personal offices and the only use for the public would be a meeting on appointment. There is one place in the building used for handing in certain documents, that is accessible.
Edit: There are many more government/city building around prague used for interacting with the public.
I guess they have to demonstrate they need to use it, in order to have access
I went to Charles Bridge yesterday just to see how touristy it actually is - It was so crowded I couldn't breathe. The most mindblowing thing is that it was literally just like any other bridge.
5:05 I can hear the weariness of the engineer on the phone. Bless him and the multiple times he hears these kinds of things in the media.

I'd probably make sure it's the very next thing I visit.

I think Prague should build a Paternoster rigth next to the Astronomical Clock. That would be a tourist gem!
last time i was in prague walking around I just kept thinking how all the tourists would annoy the locals.
Then I laughed to myself as I was technically a tourist walking around.
That the fun of the thing, most of us at some point are tourists being annoying to the locals and at others, locals being annoyed by tourists 🤣
depends if you are in a loud drunk posse or just walking around enjoying the beauty, I would think....
I use to hate tourists, until the day they stopped coming to my city, I always say be careful what you wish for…a city that depends on mass tourism, that loses it will suddenly drown
"List of paternoster elevators in Prague" ...it's that easy, did people forget how to ask questions on the internet?
I used my first paternoster at Bern, Switzerland. There's one inside a shop. And because there's also a café nobody from the staff is concerning about not buying something. The other one I used was located at Görlitz, Germany at the city hall. That one unfortunately closed forever. I hope, once I can show all the 25 at Prague to my sons later 🤔😬
I'm glad I got to experience riding it two years ago (thanks to your channel). I would gladly pay to ride it for its maintenance, we pay for everything, why not for this one
There is also one in Danish Parlament where the politicians use it all time. I don't think its for public unless you are on a visited guided tour.
It looks like you have a few in hospitals that are open to the public
My wife and I celebrated NY 2020 in Prague. And thanks to HG I made her a little surprise, showing this elevator. We went at around 5PM and city hall was pretty empty, so we enjoyed a ride without tones of other tourists. We even used city hall WC lol.
Thanks HG for happy memories!
How honest it was to tell a tourist that the Charles bridge will get close if too many ppl will go there???
But that's was you who told me about the elevator. Clearly, I wanted to take my kids to see it when I was visiting beautiful Prague last year.
In 2018 this guy saved me and my family from scams in prague. I had watched all the videos before we went and had a great time.
Tik tok is straight up trash 😭
Has TikTok fried people's brains so much that they can't even be bothered to look things up anymore??
Has the internet ruined all of y'all brain to think that it's okay to go up to someone, say that you know an answer and then not give it? Back in the day people used to be kind and helpful, but I guess we should all go fuck ourselves and Google it.
@@procopischristofi9158People are still helpful. He told them to google it so they don't have to pay him 5€, they can buy like 10 beers with that.
I wouldn't ride it because elevators terrify me, but a paternoster is an iconic piece of history which should be preserved!
Best solution would be to have an online ticket system, where it’s open on the weekends but there’s a limited amount of tickets available & you have to buy yours online.
This opens it up to the tourists who are savvy enough to plan ahead and prevents overuse/crowding.
I don't think overtourism is a thing, but I do think insufficiently monetized tourism is a thing, and there's no more clear example than this!
But it's true, that riding past the first and the last floor may cause damage. When the cars transfer between the shafts they are not guided by any rail. So if a panicky qerson is still in there and moves too much, the car may misalign on the way back and cause damage.
There are also moving parts you may inadvertently touch and may hurt you.
I found your show after I decided to go, but there's not question your country owes you a thanks for increasing tourism and awarness.
Found out about it through your videos back in 2016/17 and I'm so glad I had the chance to experience it before the tourist mayhem.
And this is a big thank you for sharing with us the beauty of your city, and all the awesome, quieter spots. Your recommendations had a massive impact on what we visited and our experience with the city!
When I went there in 2019 there was no one there, we were there maybe 10mins admiring the elevator alone. Charge a small fee makes sense but another option is for another location to do this - if there is a paternoster with a cafes/shops in the same building they can attract more business to the building.
Insanely rude to tourists. Back in the day people used to help, not come up to people and tell them they are stupid for not using google. That's really bad behaviour wether you're treating visitors or locals. Your name is literally honest guide but you refused to guide them. People always asked the locals. They didn't google it because you were in front of them telling them you knew the answer. What a dick behaviour
You are the one who introduced me to this elevator :) Thanks.
About a month ago I was in Brno and wanted to show a friend the paternoster elevator at the train station post office (that I knew about from your videos), unfortunately the post office was moved and the building looks almost abandoned from the outside. I really hope the building will be fixed up in the future and the elevator made accessible to people again.
The Main Post Office building in Brno was sold to a private investor and the future is unclear. There are two more paternoster lifts in Brno: magistrate building on Malinovského náměstí, and FME VUT on Technická.
In Finland, there is a paternoster elevator in the Finnish Parliament, Eduskunta in Helsinki. The elevator can only be used by members of parliament and parliament employees. When I visited Eduskunta, I was able to see the elevator and it was exciting.
I mean, it's kind of cool I guess. I don't quite understand why it's a major tourist attraction though. It's the kind of thing you'd look at, go "huh neat", and then move on.
true
Great vid, great channel, thanks..... (I could add a lot more, but the gist is, LOVE YA WORK, KEEP IT UP...)
it's a miracle it was still running at all. parts for them essentially have to be manufactured to order, using specialized technicians who are probably booked out months in advance. come to Stuttgart town hall, we have 3.
There is a Paternoster elevator shown in the 1970s film The Omen (the setting is a hospital in Rome), was the first time I ever saw one.
You realize you’re part of the over tourism problem too smh
You realize they basically said that in the video? Smh...
But realistically, they're a small drop in the ocean.
On the contrary, he points out issues like fake money and taxi scams, which should scare tourists enough to not arrive to Prague at all :D
Oh, Belgrade still has one of those :) not at such a good shape, so, guess it's a good thing not even locals know where it is :) we had to jump from it visiting grandpa's office. We had so much fun with that elevator as kids
Before my trip to Prag, surfing through internet for advice and guidance, found your account Honest Gide on CZcams and your videos. Definitely wouldn't know about elevator if it wasn't for your help. Great experience, now I have many videos and pictures from that place. Thank you very much. Paternoster❤❤
I'm one of the people. I saw your videos and rode the elevator in around 2018. I would support a small fee to ride it. It's super cool and worth showing off.
So you mean we should blame it on TikTokers ;P
your government officials taking the cop out saying it’s tourist is all i needed to hear.
I have been coming to Prague since the 1990s, most of the time leading tour groups from Singapore. It was only in recent years I found out about the elevator and as a special treat, I would take some of my tour group members to visit. Looking forward to its re-opening.
I definitely think having tourists only able to use the elevator on weekends sounds like an amazing idea! Especially if people pay something like 1€ for a ride! It would add up to help cover any maintenance needed and maybe even further city projects!
There's one in Copenhagen that's a bit more hidden I got to ride, in a quiet, beautiful 1910s ornate office building. Really cool but could totally see the building wanting nothing to do with crowds of tourists being stupid there.
If it's an office space and people work there I'd be weirded out by many tourists just walking in the office areas as well, think of the confidential documents and information that may just be lying around lol. But i agree with you, if that's the reason (which would be understandable imo) they should just say so and not claim it's broken from overuse.
First and foremost, it is a local government building. Closing off the building from the the public is the last thing they should be doing.
It's a bit wild to me that the elevator became such a tourist attraction. I mean, I live in Denmark, and they have a similar elevator in the parliament building in Copenhagen.
I don't know if it's open to the public for sure. But, I know that if you book a tour, you can go on it. We did that on a school trip once.
People dont realize there are more of these around Prague, I used to take one weekly so I am glad there was not a constant flock of tourists on it
That's great info.
Inside my office building is one of the last paternoster in Germany. A couple of years ago there a law was passed that you have to habe a "licence" to be legally allowed to ride a paternoster because it supposedly is so dangerous. Now we habe to renew our licence every year to still be able to usw it.
Germany is doomed in so many ways.
@@rk8872 yeah and the worst thing about that is that Germans are going for concerts and other such things to Prague, so you hear German everywhere like if it was 40s, because I guess that it's not that safe in Germany anymore, so they prefer to spend these public events here because they don't want to explode
I went looking for this in April 2024 and there were no signs up saying that it was closed (I had to ask someone where it was). There should have been a sign out the front telling people. I didnt know there was other elevators. I dont use tik tok and on google I didnt find any others.
When I was doing my Erasmus in Prague. The law faculty had one of these lifts and I still got a kick out the paternoster after using it every day. Unfortunately the faculty security people didn't let you bring visitors to look at it or the beautiful atrium.
Was always a highlight of going to lectures though. That and the 17 Tram stopping right outside. ❤
Take example from the Petronas Twin Towers Skybridge. Not just tourist but even locals have to to pay go to it. They limit to a certain number of people to visit per day. Certain allocated time in that day for visit/tour. Tickets are open for bookings on their website. Have staff to provide an official tour. And a different level of the bridge just for visitors, and occupants of the building who works there uses another level so they don't clashes and hogs each other. Not that complicated of a solution.
Just go to Zlín, there's a paternoster in the 21 building 😊
I didn't know you had those elevators in Prague. The only time I've seen them was in movies or TV shows like "Stromberg"(aka German The Office)
It was announced a few days ago that it will cost 250 kc to ride the paternoster when it reopens in the summer. That's a lot higher than I expected, but I guess it will reduce the number of tourists there dramatically.
I went on a few in Prague. One was in the tax office.
Most interesting. I have been to your city many times but never had the desire to ride the elevator as I have been on similar ones on construction sites in U.S. And honestly in your beautiful city there are much more things to do! And just simple things like enjoying your beers!
So now you have become just a trouble maker!! As you have always tried to help visitors enjoy Prague!
Thanks for your videos I very much enjoy each and every one!
but you can enjoy beer in pater noster:o) And probably ends up dead but what a fun:o)
To be honest I think your interaction with that group of tourists was just plain rude. You said you worry about the new generation being addicted to their phone and tiktok, but they were off their phones speaking to an actual human from the area, asking questions, and they got told to get ON their phones and look for it.
If you're worried about people being on their phones too much, the have actual conversations with them when they try to, and don't encourage them to get back on their phones.
And regardless of all of that, just don't be a condescending prick to people who are just trying to have a good time in your country
Glad to visited the elevator a few weeks after your first video about it. 😊
Praha has so much more to offer than just the elevator. I loved getting lost in that city.
1995 it was great, if I see this I never want to go back.
I agree. And I really don't think too many people would be upset at being charged to support any type of tourist attraction.
And to think I felt bad about missing it when we were in the city in December…turns out I couldn’t have ridden it anyway.
Ngl the elevator freaked me out and I didn’t want to go during my first visit. Now I regret not going
So I'm a lucky one who ride this "Paternoster"elevator on my (solo) tourist visit in Prague in august 2022, and I even didn't pay for it.

I rode one of those not even looking for it. I have no idea where I was. That was a common theme after going out drinking though. It definitely tripped me out.
Once a "gems" are revealed, just wait for the crowds ruin it...
I remember that episode! And I went to see the elevator because of you😂 and many other too
Rode the paternoster at Brno's city hall. Had to dodge a grumpy looking caretaker on the ground floor though!
Never dared to do the loop because I hadn't seen a video it was doable at the time...
BUT Feeling good for having encounter my first paternoster on my own, without the help of Google or TikTok :D and not in city hall ^^
Thanks for that !
Too many people can break it, especially tourists. Its not about the pure amount, its about not knowing how to use it or respecting property. There is a reason why for example in Germany no new ones are allowed and that you can't even use it, when you are not trained. Its not that hard to think about stuff you can do, to screw things up. With a modern elevator, you can't to much. You can do some things to stop them, but not damage them.
For too many people, its best to not make it free. It can be an entry fee, it could be that you need to buy something or something else. There is a reason why Disney Land and other parks do charge for the entry and not on a ride basis. The scenery itself is worth a trip and if they would make the entry for free, a lot more people would go there and it would be very quickly more crowded, because people would hang around. When you charge for the entry, you make guests to use the attractions, so they get something for their money.
Even if they would charge a very small fee for the elevator, this would allow them to control the masses. This way you can control how many people enter and you can stop entry, when there are too much inside.
I also think its kinda boring to ride an elevator. I've used one once over 15 years ago. If I had the choice to pick an elevator to ride, it would be this one, but just going to one, just to ride it? Done it once and thats enough.
I wish this video was out before my trip last February, my sister and I were soooo confused 😮
I told you this would happen. Calling people haters for them telling you you ruin places is fine and dandy.
Idk why are you surprised now
back in my day ticktok was a "Ke$ha" "song" im old now. turned on th radio and the noise that came out was so bad i just stared in disbelief. im not even 30 lol
Glad I got in it in 2021. There was no one there but me, by myself. Sorry to hear what happened. It was quite an experience.
As you posted this video, I was there looking for the elevator and it was closed, same for the one in the Lucerna passage! Though I saved a couple of people from getting scammed.
Where is Paternoster, you ask? He is omnipresent.
