Big Bore Installation and First Ride Review - Royal Enfield Classic / Meteor / Hunter 350

  • I finally got my Royal Enfield Classic 350 assembled and tested after fitting the 410 cc Big Bore kit. My list of performance modifications now includes: Free Flow Exhaust and Decat, FuelX, DNA stage 2 air filter, Kent performance camshaft and last but not least 410 cylinder Big Bore Kit from Himalayan-tools.com.
Some may say that I should have bought a different bike, maybe just went for the older 500, one of the 650 or a Triumph. However I disagree. One of my main motivations for buying this exact motorcycle was to modify, improve and work on it. In my book the new Classic 350 is probably one of the very best plattforms for doing that.
I must also add that this motorcycle is really capable of handling much more than the 20 hp it comes with. The J-series engine and the new frame is excellent, and much better than that of the older 500 (trust me, I owned one). If RE Could I do believe they would have built it more powerful from start. Maybe as a 500 cc 35 hp single. It is way capable of that!
Seems perfectly logical to me. Agree, or disagree? - feel free to start a discussion in the comments section

Congrats on the build. I am looking forward for the dynotest results when it is run in.
I really like your mindset. You are riding because you love riding and you are tuning this "slow and cheap" bike not because it is economical to do so or because it is easy. You do it because you are passionate about riding a bike you love.
That is the mindset of a true biker in mine opinion.

I’ve done all the mods on my 350 apart from this piston upgrade, we use our bike to ride 2 up and the mods have lifted performance and power 25%, but we only tour 40 - 50mph. It’s great when I’m riding solo - the only trouble with the upright seating position is that above 60mph your torso catches that much wind it’s unpleasant.
I have a 535 Continental GT, and you ride prone cafe racer position, with a small deflection screen over the twin clocks I can sit at 60 - 70mph with no wind. I’m investing in increasing the performance of the cafe racer to 612cc with additional performance upgrades. I think my money’s better invested in that rather than the 350.

Cost wise, considering that any upgrade would be done by a local bike shop, which is the most effective to get some more torque for a Meteor used on hilly roads with 2 people? This big bore reminds me of my old Vespa PX which was 125cc a long time ago, but now runs like or more than a 200cc

In my opinion this is mainly affected by the larger cog. Thus 7% higher than before. The big bore makes it easier to sustain a higher speed even in ahead wind and or going uphill, and of course make the bike pull harder when accelerating (ie out of corners). Short answer, I would say 80 to 100 is ok

I think RE gave the new 350 a counter-balancing shaft. If they made it a bigger bore they would have needed a bigger balancer to get it as smooth as it is. They could have made it a 500 but the balancer made them go with 350cc. I suspect the 410 kit vibes a bit more than the 350 but who cares? You should try my XL1200..

    • @MotoMorten

it's wonderful to modify your ride but taking a 315 train to ring more power out of it is a lost battle before you even start you just threw good money after bad to get marginal improvement in performance that really isn't going to equate to a long-term improvement in your riding experience on the 350. If you're going to ride at 350 you had to change the perspective in your mind not the horsepower that the bike puts out it's a different philosophy and unless you can tune into that you're never gonna make it satisfying.
