Royal Enfield Classic 350 16t sprocket upgrade really worth doing? Here is an honest 2000Km opinion

  • Right then!, is it Wirth fitting a 16t sprocket to raise the gearing on a Royal Enfield Classic 350 when the bike is still electronically restricted to approx 73 mph?, well watch and find out/ make your own decision.
Hope you find this film useful and please feel free to leave a comment or your own findings if you have done this along with air intake / CAT freer flowing set ups

I have got the full Hitchcock exhaust system, dna air filter, FuelX pro (set to 2) and a 16 tooth front sprocket. GPS recorded 78 mph top speed. I talked to my local Enfield mechanic and he said the classic 350 is restricted to 80% of its max revs via ECU. Adding a 16 tooth sprocket lowered the revs, meaning you can go faster before the engine reaches the 80% rev range. This also means that you can ride full throttle in 5th gear all day and it won’t harm the bike. Hope this helps.

Loaded camping trip, 1600 miles to Colorado with 16t and DNA filter was a bad experience. I’m 6’ 210lbs, and the bike would max around 55-60mph. Often I had to down shift, canceling out fuel savings. I’ve put the 15t back and easily get to 72mph and keep it there on fifth. I agree you could do a higher top speed with 16t, but I would almost never get there. Ready to do another hiking trip to the mountains with a 15t! Now just need to fix the speedometer

With everything stock one can't ride the motorcycle at 5th gear on top speed. Would it harm the engine.

Tried removing the air filter cover done the remap tick over.
Huge difference,so got the DNA kit arriving this week.
Next Hitchcocks cat replacement pipe as I like the silencer as is.
May well give the sprocket a whirl .

I plan on traveling 360 miles on back roads in Texas Hill country each weekend that the weather allows. I'm looking for better efficiency and lower revs but I don't plan on going over 65 mph. So going faster isn't what I'm looking for but I'd like my RE Classic 350 to work less doing 65 mph. Adding a tooth to the front sprocket seems to be what I need to do.

I purchased a 16T last year, but for various reasons never got to put it in. I think you give good reasons for doing it or not. I have an air filter and fuelx coming, my only hesitation is that I currently have a Meteor and have considered trading it for a classic. The parts are interchangeable so they would work if I did make the switch. Still winter here so I have some time to think about it.

As a mechanic looking at one of these for here in the US, most of the local roads are 55 an under. But the ability to do 70 is just surviving the the big road in to the city. Its usable but you really need to be able to hit 75 or 80 every now an then. So I put a little though in to how the speed limiter works. But you can only do so much without owning one to actually test on. And there are no local dealers to even look at one. So its all theory.
Assuming what people are saying is true that its speed limited using the ABS sensors, thats easy to minipulate. I would not do this other than to test, but someone could unhook the ABS sensors. Your ABS will not work, nor your speedometer, but neither will the limiter. Put a GPS on the bike an see what it will do. Preferabilly somewhre you are not going to need the ABS. You could also unhook one then the other to see if the limiter is using both or just one. The bike will probably turn the ABS light on doing it though.
You have some other options for a more long term fix. The easiest is bigger tires. As I understand it from other videos, the speedometer is off by about 5%. Adding 5% bigger tires (outside diameter) that would be fixed an you would be going 5% faster, (what the speedometer actually says.) Two issues though. Will bigger tires fit? An can you get bigger tires? The rear you can but it is running the biggest front tire you can generally find already. To find a bigger tire for the front, you need to buy a classic tire in a no longer common size, an measured in inches. Probably from someone like Coker clasic tire company. My math says something around a 4-19. Would a tire 4 inches wide an 4 inches off the rim fit? This also raises the gear ratio on the bike which you may or may not want. Right about the same change as the 16 tooth gave you. If we knew which ABS sensor is used, changing only one tire is an option.
Another option is to change the ABS rings. The ABS counts the holes in the ring as they go by. A ring with 5% fewer holes would do the same thing as getting bigger tires, without changing the gear ratio an buying specal tires. An you could take this a bit firther if you didnt care about the speedomiter being accurate. 20% fewer holes would give you 20% more speed before any speed limiter would kick in. And you could probably get away with that without the ABS acting up. But the ABS will probably fail to work correctly if you take this to extremes. Half as many holes would probably not work well with the ABS. The issue here is the rings. On mosts bikes they are a bolt on piece that is easy to reproduce. The photos I have seen of this one makes it look like the ABS ring is part of the brake disk. Thats a bit harder to reproduce. You can make a ABS ring with whatever holes you want with basic shop tools. Building a brake disk takes some specialty equipment.
Again, this is all based on theory of how it should work. I do not have one to test myself.

Hi Tim, the speedo is controlled I believe through the ECU and ABS rings on the wheels. Which is also how the top speed is restricted to approx 73mph, with the higher gearing the bike pulls higher speeds in each gear and is less buzzy cruising along at 50 mph 😁👍 cheers Bruce
