The Thing About Hiking Alone... [Crossing the Pyrenees on the GR11 - Chapter 4]

  • I began hiking the GR11 on August 24th 2020 and for the first week, I enjoyed my own company being alone on the trail. In the second week (chapter 2) I met two English lads and Karim from Egypt, and we enjoyed a couple of weeks walking together (chapter 3). The fourth instalment on my Crossing the Pyrenees series I begin with Karim and then go off on my own again and end up appreciating the time alone in nature more than ever.
In the final chapter (coming soon) I finish my hike alone and finally reach the shores of the Mediterranean after 512 miles and 30 days of hiking.

Over 50 years in the hills, and generally much prefer to hike alone. As you say - you get much closer to nature without the distraction of chatter. With the right mindset, it becomes a form of walking meditation.
Plus on the practical side you aren't involved in endless negotiations. You decide when to strike camp, how fast and far to walk, when to rest, where to pitch camp, when to shelter and when to push on, when to take a rest day, when to resupply, when to change your plans when you meet someone special... It's amazing how the resentments can build up over all these petty points, even with someone you like. Hike alone, and all of that distraction simply drops away.

I walk alone quite often and love the solitude, the ability to change course slightly to gain a different view without debate. I liked very much some of the video towards the end while you walked alone, the shot of you on the spine of a hill walking and jogging away. You have a good eye for what shots will look good it seems to me. Thankyou for all that you do.

I couldn't agree more with what you said about what solohiking is about. It is the exact reason why I'm often torn between hiking with friends and hiking alone. Going solo really lets me be free since I don't even have to formulate my thoughts, plans and decisions into words and just kind of become one with the experience. Besides, after a couple of days without any contact to anybody, I feel much more appreciative of the people around me, like having pressed some reset button. I come back from a long solo hike feeling that I can take on absolutely anything.
Thanks for the vid, great as always! =)

You're reflection at the end about being alone was my sentiments exactly when I walked from Konstanz to Nice in 2015. Eight years later I am planning this walk, and your video series has been an inspiration. At 58 I'm a planning things lighter and spending a bit of money where I went on the cheap the last time. First time I was fresh in recovery from a heroin addiction and the experience of walking through the alps was mind blowing and soul discovery. I'm currently in Grenada W.I. where the mountains are good training for the GR 11. I'm using your exercises from the videos daily; what a great resource. Thx Chase👍

Thank you for your very informative videos. So generously helpful. I am a beginner walker and so doing some research on the tube.
There were once three zen monks who decided to go up a big remote mountain where there were no other people, in a quest for enlightenment. They found a cave with a ledge that looked out over mountains and sat down to meditate in silence. After three years one monk said, "Do you feel anything yet?" Another two years passed before one of the other monks replied, "Nope." Two more years passed when the third monk said, "No. But if you two don't stop talking like that I'm outta here!"
    Smiles,

The G11 is pretty interesting, from what I can gather in your videos. It’s mix of extreme rugged route finding and scrambling up steep cliffs and mountainsides juxtaposed with a relatively high level of development (near daily villages and towns, and other accommodations like the hotels and developed campgrounds). Even trailheads in national forests and wilderness areas in the western US usually have pit toilets, at best. But that sort of rugged scrambling and route-finding is almost always reserved for summer summits. I have heard about the Continental Divide Trail being pretty underdeveloped.

I agree with what he says at the end, to a word. The last 3 years I have hiked and climbed mountains alone, and I find it more rewarding than doing it with other people. It can be fun with friends, of ocurse, but you meet fewer new people ( or usually none), you don't reflect as much, it is nto meditative when you are in a group, and it is also a lot less effiecient. They only thing I don't like about going solo is that crossign a glacier is pretty dangerous, and climbs requiring roping up are too dangerous to attempt under normal circumstances.

"it's not acceptable to call it a day at 5 o'clock". I have laughed at that a couple of times. Still, having left that refugi at Estanys Baiau at 5 to ascend Portella de Baiau and finally reach the cabana near the Refugi de Comapedrosa was quite an effort.
Everytime I've got up or down the Portella de Baiau I have thought WTF. It is really unstable in places. Once a friend of mine slipped and broke his walking pole on descent.
I usually prefer to take the Collada de Estanys Forçats instead. In consider a more pleasant alternative, which also affords a walker the opportunity to ascend Pic de Medacorba and stand on the border of three countries.

I hike alone because I cannot find anyone to drop out of the rat race for a minimalist lifestyle....oh, and because some Harvard jerks in America hooked my brain up to a computer and hacked everything I own. See, they call it a "Tough Mudder" and a lucky mom like myself gets shock therapy and arctic enemas, against my will. It's no lie. Pray someone help me.
