I have never heard an English man so proud of his Spanish heritage.
As I grew up my point was not to do anything I might regret. Now that I am old I see so many things that I didn't do and should have. I rejoice seeing people do what I cannot do anymore. It is too late for me, but through them I at least get some feel of it. The internet can be a marvelous thing.
Hindsight is always 20/20, and it's not a bad strategy... I did plenty things I regret so we're in the same spot really.... ✌️
I agree.
One thing I’d like to ask. What was the reason for your inaction or allowing yourself to deny ? I have battled against those who tried to enforce their values on me all my life. To be a traveler you have to rebel against the conventional expectations of what life should be, you have to be strong in your conviction to follow your own path. Some are just not strong enough to rebel against this, restricting their life. If your outside the box you risk criticism.
I’ve managed to have a reasonable life of exploration, but not to the level of what I would really have liked. But At 58, I still have time.
@@robwhite461 When I was younger I didn't think that I deprived myself of anything. It is only now that I think I could have done more. It's one of these "with age comes wisdom" (maybe).
Yes ! 🧡🌱
My Greek grandparents initiated my wanderlust through Europe. When my baby came along, somewhat constricted by budget & father's unwillingness to let him leave country, we traveled the US from coast to coast. He & his wife have traveled parts of Europe.
So finally Michael Palins traveller torch has been passed to a worthy successor. Grand European tours, narrated in a style that harks back to the “old days” is a great reminder that there is still a place in our wandering roots for stories of foreign shores. Bravo Michael.
Wauw a new Michael Portillo adventure! I loved all his train adventures. He's such a good storyteller and amiable gentleman. Much love from the Netherlands!
He was not a great political force but far better story teller
he should be captain haddock in a tintin movie.
What a surprise to see you again. We used to watch your show years ago when you toured England. We ram across this video by accident. So nice to see you again. Eva
This wonderful country, with its kind people. I love Spain, the Basque Country and the mighty, inmensly beautiful Pyrenees
I used to watch Michael in the BBC production 'Great Railway Journeys' which I enjoyed so much. I'm happy I found this Channel. Happy to see you again Michael, from the comfort of home in Brazil❤
Glad you enjoy it!
Happy to go on more adventures with Michael Portillo! Fingers crossed all episodes of this series will be available through Journeys.
A Labour man all my life but my politics is just a small fraction of me. Mr Portillo is a great narrator and human being.
Labour Party Coming soon in Britain .. Stay tuned :)
@@JOURNEYS7🙏🏼🙏🏼
Same here, born and bred - cut my limbs off and I'm sure like a stick of rock it'll say Labour. But for some reason I've always liked Portillo plus the reasons you've cited.
Agreed. 😊

Im 67 now. Life for me has been hard, but I have survived the challenges. Now I am facing more adversity. Life is hard, but joy and hope comes in the small things
Stay Hopeful. Stay Positive.
aw, such a sweet story about how your mom and dad met!
As a Spanish woman I´m proud of Michael! I have adored to see it and I love every documentary made by Michael!!
As a fellow Anglo-Spaniard also named Michael this video almost brought me to tears.
Very nice Michael. We moved to Asturias, 5 years a go! A great move and a totally giving area! We are blessed with water, trees, animals and amiable neighbours!
Sounds great!
A thoroughly decent man, Talking about his heritage, in my favourite country. Wonderful
It's hard not to love the Pyrenees and it's inhabitants.
Thank you Michael for sharing! My mother´s ancestors, part of them, the Bernal family, came from Basque. Beautiful documentary! 🙏
Glad you enjoyed it
I had a consultant who was asked by a journalist about how would be his perfect world. He answered, walking in the Pyrenees with a backpack loaded with cheese and wine. I second that :)
Dear Mr Michael..... for what ever your past politics, you have turned into a great raconteur , a skill so hard to learn when there are millions of voices all putting forward their views. To have the common touch, to explain in clear words , with a delivery which is slow and meaningful to be so easy to follow.... its a joy to be lead along your journey, which becomes our journey together. Never stop with these adventures it keeps our windows and food open ..... and like Jeff below I live in Bangkok, and with all the adventures here..... its great to have you back.
What an episode . This is surely one of the best things I have watched in 2024.
I've loved following all his railway journeys and it's great to find him again - such a great travelogue presenter!
Superb filming and thoroughly enjoyed the conversations along the way.Just enough said to wet the appetite, thank you and your team.
Glad you enjoyed it
The section on the gifting of the makila was emotional and significant. Thank you.
Wow! Where have you been all these years?!!! I have been wondering. Glad you're back at least today!
Welcome back!
It would also be interesting to visit emblematic places of the southern cone of the continent, Argentina with cities like Bariloche, San Martin de los Andes, El Bolson, Villa La Angostura, Ushuaia, El Calafate, El Chalten, all with particular histories and unique Patagonian attractions, also Iguazu Falls, or Mendoza with the wine route, then the capital Buenos Aires, an air of Europe with Latin flavor. Very nice video !
The Pyrenees are one of the rare places in Europe that have not yet been destroyed by tourists, mainly because they can't get there by cruise ship. If you visit them, please respect the people and natural environment they live in and value highly.
Hey Patrick. Long time ⌚. Happy New Year 2024.
@@JOURNEYS7 Thanks, and the same goes for you! 🥳
Spain full of surprises as it is so kaleidoscopic. Populace out in the country ever so different and traditional with a rural vibe versus rocous and bacchic bunch in coastal resorts.
We love Michael Portillo here in Linz, since he even stayed here some time ago! Cheers to this truly remarkable gentleman, from Austria! 😎
Couldn't agree more!
haha! you're funny. spanish in you.@@JOURNEYS7
Michael Portillo, a great man, fully deserving our respect and gratitude.
Not in my book. Voted to lock all Brits in, knowing he could get out with his Spanish passport. I escaped the asylum in 1986 🇨🇵🇪🇺.
Muchas gracias Michael! Splendid to hear you speaking Spanish with the people you meet. What a wonderful journey with you. Exploring an area I have never been to & now feel inspired to visit. ❤️
Glad you enjoyed it!
So much more than what I expected! It's like being pulled into a wonderful, emotional tale full of beautiful sights. Soooo enjoyable and relaxing ❤
Just home from the floating market here in Bangkok and here you are. Saving this for my evening viewing. Good to have you back.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏😍 Parabéns a Michael !!!! 🤩👍
"Life is full of surprises, dancing in a mill....I danced my way to a husk."
Beautiful video of the Spanish Pyrenees, the slippery and difficult path you navigate ... sweeping vistas of green valleys..lunch at an inn, good food and jovial company.
So different from other travel videos.
Wonderful narration.
Thank you.
..
This travel video Mr. Portillo is bringing so many good memories back. Lived in Hendaia for 24 years, the best years of my life, unfortunately had to go back through circumstances outside my powers to the Netherlands. Always thought my last resting place would be on the Jaizkibel. Agur
I lived in Tafalla, a small town just south of Pamplona for a year. It really is a fascinating place, not necessarily Tafalla as it is so small, but Navarra/Pais Vasco in general. A small town which I do recommend for a short trip is Olite. I will add this, the wine and the food are second to none!
My first Michael Portillo video, excellent 👏🏽
Glad you enjoyed it!
He visto el documental sobre Salamanca y me ha emocionado. Muchas gracias

This man Michael Portillo and all of the crew etc, make absolutely wonderful beautiful amazing, real good old television programs ,they're absolutely brilliant, there's no fancy camera angles, music etc, just good family entertainment,
Truly an excellent video
This channel deserves at least a million subs
Simply woderful!
Glad you like it!
I used to watch your program on television, but my television broke, now I found your program on You Tube! I loved
Long term British resident of Catalonia. Thanks for downloading this, newly discovered. Mixed feelings about, among other things Brexiteer, Portillo but after enjoying many of his Great Railway Journeys, including his visit to my own region, was looking forward to the chance to see this series. Worth a look for the stunning scenery and though heavily contrived of course, the style of presentation irritating in places, the added poignancy of Portillo's family connection with it made it very watchable. Hope it stays up long enough for me to get through all the episodes.
There are only four episodes in this Series . You Understand the risks . I hope you could support this Channel . Please do.
What’s so hard to understand about being controlled by unelected bureaucrats. I love Europe but not the European Union. Say what you want about the useless UK government as I’m politically homeless but the EU oligarchy is a cancer on our European culture. Thanks Michael for yet another amazing documentary, bravo!
@@quercus21 Educate People about Oligarchy and its harms.
He's a Brexiteer, because the EU has now totally changed, from what it was, into an unaccountable, authoritarian socialist and globalist political dictatorship and the United Kingdom was very wise to get out, just in time.
I stumbled on this video, suddenly excited about learning more of this wonderful feature of Earth. And I speak from newly arrived at four-score and ten anni!
Stunning place, very unique!
We agree!
This guy live the life. Wow
Welcome back Michael !!! Nice to see you again 👍
Hey, thanks!
A real pleasure watching Michael with his Bradshaws & Appletons guides highlighting the spectacular scenery & natures wonders on his journeys! His willingness to sample the local culture is also great fun! A very pleasant, chilled watch with mases of feel good vibes!
The only thing missing is an undermining, insidious political message about how humans are a cancer on the planet that will eventually destroy everything!
i.e. what they did to Wildlife on One in the 90's
Wonderful Compilation
Glad you liked it
So nice to see again 👏👏👏👏
From Brazil … RIo De JANEIRO , but now , I ‘ m in Orlando USA ! 👍

Wonderful!
Glad you think so!
I have enjoyed these four videos tremendously. Not only because of the magnificent cinematography. Also because M. Portillo has made it so special with his descriptions and reflections. I was born in Calahorra (Rioja), relatively close to the Pyrenees in Navarra and Aragón, and I have appreciated the beauty of these mountains for a long time. Mr. Portillo is a rare example of a politician who transcended politics. Rare but not surprising, given his academic and family background. Congratulations!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Being a student of Geography i enjoyed watching your travel documentary

Portillo, the guy who had an opinion about David Icke's books without having read one.
Wonderful commentary
I'd love to meet Michael i think he's an absolute sweetie. I could listen to him all day. ☺️🌱🧡🌿
I really want to take this trip and hike the Pyrenees. Part of my family comes from the Lussan area and so the the mountains of France feels like coming home.
Beautiful.
Thank you! Cheers!
Good video, very interesting
How does this not have more views?
Amazing
Thank you! Cheers!
Wonderful video doc!
Glad you liked it!
Passionate and tempting. I would loveto do this. I just need a companion
The pilgrimage has not been a continuous stream since the 9th century. It virtually died out after the Wars of Religion, and the Enlightenment. The upsurge began in the 1990s, after a very long period when scarcely a hundred people might arrive in Santiago in a year. Now, it's 1500 people per day in high season!
Fascinating. I lived in Barcelona for 9 months and drove from there to Calais passing the Pyrenees. I also made the journey from England to Switzerland a number of times but I was fascinated by the book 'Home Run' which showed all the escape routes out of Nazi occupied territory during the 2NDWW. A number of them would have names and go over the Pyrenees from occupied France to Barcelona and this video shows what they faced going over the Pyrenees. .
USAAF ace Chuck Yeager , after had been shot down on his 9th mission in March 1944, evaded the Germans for weeks before being led to safety over the Pyrenees with other Allied pilots to Spain by the French Maquis. The Gestapo were brutal towards the Maquis. He was the detained by Spanish authorities and stayed in nice hotels until he could be brought back to England by ship.
Fascinating!!!!
respect
Great video
Thanks for the visit
I just love your videos, as I'm sure is the same for so many othesr! You are so entertaining, funny and with your gift of words, obviously, which is so far out of reach for Canadians it's very sad. I will be spending a month in Andalusia this February, solo travelling, and I hope our paths may cross! I'm sure having a coffee with you would be great delight Also, I think you might have said you live in Malaga? I just saw a documentary about the droughts in Andalusia and how it is affecting the environment. If it weren't for the golf courses and hotel pools, Im sure the nature would improve. I just suspect that's a topic amongst you and your friends.
Carry on, Michael!
I stayed in Hondarribia, although not at the Parador. Nice if you can get someone to afford it for you.
my ancestral homeland one day i hope to visit.
The bombing of Guernica made the village famous by Picasso's picture but it was not the most painful in the Spanish Civil War, There were greater disasters such as the "espanta" in Malaga or the shootings of thousands of people In the bullring of Badajoz but Picasso (from Malaga) did not paint any pictures of those events 29:37
So good to see you again: my most favourite traveller by far. Do you need an assistant? 😊
Auque me gusta su serie de viajes por trenes , esta serie es diferente e interesante también como las de los trenes
The home arrangement (animals on the bottom and hey in the attic) is the common style in the Alps, not specific to Basque country. Difficult to determine where it started..
True. We had this here in Switzerland. France too. Italy. Austria. The lifestyle, food (cheese and dried meat anyone?) and culture is similar in many ways, all determined by the ecology. It's called Alpine pastorialism.
Yes, my mother in-laws' family house in Auvergne, south central France, was the same; I think this was a very widespread practice.
What a wonderful video and journey! Thank you for sharing.
Is it possible to have a link for the back pack you used? That would be much appreciated. Thank you
No idea of this backpack🎒. Please understand.
hello great sir. Are you planning on uploading the rest? Also interested in other Portillo's shows, like Great American Railway Journeys, Alaskan, Canadian and Great Coastal Railway Journeys!
Will be Posting about Support me Financially in the Community page regarding this .. Yes Will upload the Rest.. of Portillos Journeys and many more .
At least a man who is clad like an interesting human being - sometimes I was really afraid that I might be the last one....

I am in love with Euskal Herria💫
Hopefully if anyone can the Basques will be able to resist the juggernaut of American culture
Best thing you've ever done i imagine.perhaps bring some humility😊
What a pitty Mr. Portillo that you do not mention even a single time NAVARRA where you are most of your time during your journey! You should know this.
There is a way to describe people from the north of Spain that says you can not tell if they are coming or going
That is only suposed to be for Galicians
I would like to know what about how kilometer you ran for day.
The walking sticks are beautifully crafted but WAY TOO SHORT!!!
Christmas is near friends, let's invite everybody enjoy such cute tips for Santa's gifts, exploring the Holy Creation in such spectacular locations, the frontier areas have something... really creepy in them, Mother Earth's so gorgeous no matter in how many ways, she is like asking to be admired and...loving natural beauties is regenerating, is about our symbiotic relationship with the nature and everybody should experiment the feeling. Lucky guy Mr. Portillo having such a spectacular family history, the amazing adventure of immigrants, still, the problem of European ethnical minorities is a big big problem to deal with, mostly in Spain, mostly for the frontier communities, once again, if trips, travels, tourism interests can become supportive, help them up, let's..make a nice Christmas gift all of ...lost and isolated ethnical minorities of all kind of frontiers ❤🎉❤
Hw has never walked all these routes in the clothes he is wearing or tell me different . Interesting documentary
Until the XIX Euskadi was the poorest area in Spain ,bad weather ,too many mountains, bad land but one thing happened " industrial revolution in UK Belgium,France,Germany and so on, they needed coal and people with iron culture will be the future so being the poorest area in Spain become one of the richest ,rich people did not sell the Coal deposits and they sold coal to everywhere in Europe or rented them in addition to producing iron for trains, bridges buildings, etc. and that was the miracle ,the poorest become one of the richest areas in Spain
The second most importan bank ( BBVA) born in Euskadi and before its name was related to coal and iron .
Gosh, the "setting up the journey part" was really drawn out
And the trains?
