The final leg of his walk is a very personal one for Michael as he is back in Spain, in the Catalonian Pyrenees. In 1939, his father fled through these mountains as a political refugee from the Spanish Civil War.

You're so lucky to be a product of two cultures that had such an impact on the world as we know it. Miguel de Cervantes and Shakespeare, what a combo.
Michael...an absolutely fantastic journey! Thank-you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I was never a fan of Michael Portillo's politcal position, but I find this illuminating and very moving. This is the journey of a human tracing his ancestors.RESPECT! Thankyou.so muchl❤

I have never ever given a comment on anything that’s presented online but this is a must.
This was the most beautiful, interesting and inspiring program I have seen for some time and it made my Christmas. 😊 I’ve got to see the Pyrenees.

Wonderful!
This series is spectacular for its photography, history, genealogy, and exquisite narrative by Mr. Portillo. Some years ago I enjoyed his railway journey through the US. I look forward to watching more of his travels.
Many thanks!
Beautiful series. Very personal and very interesting point of view. Also a great tribute to your father. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it
My parents did that crossing into France and ended in the refugee camps of Argeles-sur-mer where they spend two years on that beach till the germans occupied France, so they experienced the Spanish war and the Second World War, sad time for Spain and Europe
You made It! Congrats Michael🎉
Thank you so much sir, for taking us along on this quest; this pilgrimage. This has been a splendid adventure!
Glad you enjoy it!
Always loved the Railway Journeys, and really enjoyed this series too. Helps me relax and I like all the appreciation of family, history, friends and nature stories that form the series. I'd love to take a trip like this to my family's original homeland.

Very well done, Michael. As an avid hiker, I can see how well you concealed your disappointment in seeing that you didn’t have one more hill to climb, but five more before you could enjoy your evening stew! A touching look at the Basque Lands.
Thanks 👍
Brilliant, poignant, beautiful and challenging - thank you for this amazing series!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent portrayal of my favourite part of the world, we have friends in Andorra who we visit often! I am sure that it would be an experience never to forget to sit down at a table and share some wine and food and knowledge with Michael.
Glad you enjoyed it!
You've been my guide since 12 years ago when I travelled around UK. Thank you.
This series of videos have been exceptional and inspiring. Thank you Michael for sharing them with us. We are of similar age and I don't know how you managed your wonderful journey through the Pyrenes. I am a true aficionado of Spain having lived there for many years in my earlier days. these videos have re-ignited my love for Spain. Thank you. Un saludo.
Wonderful!
Your best yet Michael !
I really love Michael Portillo's travel adventures. Muchas gracias! Merci beaucoup!
This is regarding Michael’s arthritic hip. Some of my friends have arthritic joints and should have been operated on, as after x-ray, they were found to have no, or fragmented, cartilage between the affected joints. They took two teaspoons of gelatine powder (not vegan, but from pig) every morning. After six months, after x-ray, they found the cartilage had regrown and so protected the joints and pain had subsided. They didn’t have an operation. I also have three score years and ten and, touch wood, have no problems. I take one teaspoonful as a prevention. Try it. You have nothing to lose.

Glad you enjoyed it!
Beautiful, mesmeric landscapes, a wonderful series and charmingly narrated. Interesting how the Spanish refugees fleeing the beast of fascism were welcomed warmly and humanely by the French, whilst our current conservative U.K. government wants to deport refugees to Rwanda.
I watched all the episodes.

Super production..

Many thanks!!
How do you make a documentary about the Pyrenées without spending time in Andorra , a country which is entirely defined by the mountains. Moreover, if I heard correctly, he declared Col de Tourmalet as the highest paved pass in the Pyrenées, when it is in fact the Port d’Envalira
👏👏👏👏👏
Absolutely wonderful 👏👏👏#michaelportillo
The misery of war in the world still continues... Always has, always will because humankind is never satisfied with its lot in life and want someone else's lot.

MjD: I thoroughly enjoyed the videos and the narration. Congratulations!!!!! I wonder if it was all walked, given the camera person(s) and drone visuals and the light coat that would get wet. Plus no gloves. You frequently showed a change of truly lovely foulards! Also the backpack was sitting in the air a bit indicating nothing heavy in it. I am only mentioning these cues because the trekking was very long and challenging. I am glad you were able to get snow shoes and was surprised that you didn't also have yak tracks when going through the light snow. There didn't always seem to be defined paths, so I'm assuming you had a guide and part of the journey must have been with transportation because 25 miles a days is for very very fit people and quite rare. So My question is what is the best way to access a guide for such a wonderful trek?
Twelve days? It would take more than a month to walk from Biscay to the Med.
where can one buy the walking sticks you were using and that you went to worksho???
Google Maquila stick.
Is this part 4
😊
La geografia española pasa de apacible a inquietante en 5 minutos o 10 km.😂😊
How mene dais you espend?
I'm going to tell you something that your father may have experienced in 1939 . In that area of the Pyrenees many Spanish republicans, already in French territory, were put in a refugee camp by the French Government . The younger ones were deceived by telling by french authorities to them that their Spanish relatives were in Toulouse or Carcassonne waiting for them and they were allowed to leave the refugee camp, They were allowed to abandon the refugee camp and the French soldiers shot them in the woods
The Second World War was about to begin and the French authorities were not willing to house communists, republicans, socialists , Anarchists, progressives and so on, thousands and thousands of young republicans were murdered by France. I am sure your father if he was in that area knew it and was very lucky not to be killed by french government
My uncle was in one of those "refugee camps" many died of hunger, tuberculosis and so on
French never helped Spaniard.
The first column that enters the Paris parade in the victory against Nazism was led by the Spanish Republicans, those who fought the most against Nazism and that was their honor, lead the parade in the victory day
You must be very proud of your father !
Most of those spaniards still in France in 1945 were given the French nationality, that stories of shootings ??? Well first time I hear that. I know that many were put in ''working'' units to made fortifications and roads for the army and the government and the conditions were bad. There were hated because of having the reputation of being all comunists and violent in a moment that after the Ribbentrop-Molotov pact the communist party was outlawed in France. A part the fact they were in one of the poorest region of France and the War was looming, the conditions in the camp were horrible because they didn't want them to attract more and there were plans before the war to send them to Argelia (a french territory at the time) or even Mexico that never went implemented because of the events of the war. Saying that the Spanish Republicans fought the most against the nazis is ridiculous, even those of the Free French Second Armored Division were only something like 180 in a unit with 16000 volunteers (and the Soviet Union did the most)... and those part of the resistance were a minority of it.
So he walked 300 miles in 12 days including stopping for interviews. That is an impressive 25 miles per day.
Don`t forget the cameraman lugging all his kit.
So I wonder if it was all walked, given the camera personz(s) and drone visuals and the light coat that would get wet. There didn't always seem to be defined paths, so I'm assuming he had a guide and part must have been transportion because 25 miles a days is for very very fit people.
He makes it clear that he walks 'portions' I suspect they were actually very small portions at that. Very few 'travel' programmes are as they seem, they are All staged to some extent, and I suspect this was filmed in selected spots, then moved on. But he does not say he walked the Lot! Even as a Tory that would be a Lie too far!
Been Israeli married an Australian and living my home country to live in Australia I can understand this faith you are talking about, and how lucky we are to live in relative safe and beautiful country/continent like Australia. What a great walk. enjoyed it much
Famous last words
Remember when Portillo didn't get arrested over that assault on Tatchell? 🤔
I loathe the bloke! I watched for the Pyrenees and tried to ignore him 'I am half Spanish' Then how come your Spanish is no better than mine? And you appear to know begger all about the place? And he Always has to make out he is somehow superior. His father was an 'Intellectual' What a shame the brainy gene seems to have got lost in his offspring.

That flamenco music 😂😂😂
What Flamenco music? The Pyrenees does not have Flamenco music. Flamenco is one very small genre belonging to one ethnic group. Somehow it has become all dorks think of as Spain. There was No Flamenco played here.
