    I absolutely love Josh O'Connor as Prince Charles. All the actors in The Crown are so good at making the royals (and other characters) seem human, which they are. I do feel that Olivia's version of the queen is more stoic, intentionally so, compared to Claire's insecure and perhaps naïve version of her.

      @janwaldorf8075 Před 4 lety +59

      Mads D maybe she has taken into account the fact that the queen has grown older and been on the throne for longer than when Claire was portraying the queen? Or it is just her natural appearance 😅

      the Crown made a huge mistake in Season 3. Season 2 ended in the early 1960's when Elizabeth was 37 and Claire was replaced by Olivia who is almost 50 yrs old, but the biggest flaw was casting Helena Carter as Margaret, who at the time was 34 and Helena is in her 50's!!!!!

    The Crown certainly has humanized Charles more and that is a good thing. So many of his decent qualities and good works were lost sight of, because of his tortured relationship with Diana. They were a pair that were forced together and not the best fit.

      if you knew anything about the royal family, you would know that’s pretty darn close. I’m a nerd who likes to read about this stuff so I was pretty surprised how close to the truth most of it was. But I agree that Charles has been demonized because of the whole Diana thing and I don’t think it hursts for people to be shown a different side of him. Through that whole debacle, any of his good traits got drowned out because everyone loved Diana.

      In the end the monarchy doesn’t really do anything besides charity and tourism work.
      They don’t make laws or have an impact on the decision making of the country/countries.
      So why not let them stay, earn a bit of tourism money for the nation.
      Wales has a parliament, and can vote for the representatives in the London parliament. Getting rid of the monarchy or shuffling the position would achieve nothing.

    • @sebastianlodge7549
      @sebastianlodge7549 Před 4 lety +9

      Right. The royal family owns many tracks of land throughout the country.
      A long time ago a king made a deal with parliament asking it for a royal pension, and in exchanged the royal family would give the money from those lands to parliament (they were doing pretty bad at the time). Overall now those lands make far much more money then it costs to take care of the royal family, making your taxes cheeper, because of their existence.
      The current royal family has legitimacy, they weren’t invaders but invited. The queen position in government is basically ceremonial, since the queen decides to stay neutral.
      On the tourism note, as an Australian I can say, I wouldn’t never have gone to Buckingham palace, and London if the queen wasn’t real. There is simply no way the royal family can’t have a impact on it, Americans love that stuff.
      While I understand why you would want a welsh man or women as your prince or princess, you already have a parliament, a prince would just be pointless waste of time. People respect the current royal family because they have a long history of legitimacy, and that history gives them reason to rule. Some random Welshman doesn’t have that legitimacy, or that history, which is needed to preserve old monarchies such as the British one.

    I think the sad cruelty of it all is how traditionalism has caused so much heartbreak in the name of keeping with tradition. Had Prince David been allowed to marry Wallis as he did and remain king, Prince Albert would not have been thrust into the role. He may very well have outlived his brother had be not been forced to be king. Had Charles been allowed to marry Camilla as he ultimately did then would there be such this negative connotation that comes along with Charles? Would Diana be married to some Earl living a quiet and Happy life. Could Andrew & Fergie remarry and not have this odd half and half open ended relationship? All because it's not what they have done before? Whatever, who knows, God Save the Queen.

    I didn't have much of an opinion of Charles to begin with: I didn't hate him, but I didn't know much about him as a person. I only knew that he was cheating on Diana with Camilla and eventually married her. It's still not a nice thing to have done, but when I learned that he and Camilla had been together before Diana, but had not been allowed to marry themselves, it put things better in perspective. And I still love Diana, but she admitted that she'd been cheating as well in the marriage.
    They just weren't a good match.
    The point is, after seeing this show and seeing the more human side of Charles that's been buried by the media, I have a better opinion of him than what I had previously. I don't know if after Elizabeth dies people would want to accept him as king (or Camilla as his queen, for that matter), and he'd probably get a lot of bad press. But that being said, I think he would be a decent king.

      Really? I was thinking the exact opposite. In his youth, Charles was very much an introvert, shy and sensitive, someone who enjoyed quiet evenings with a book, or meaningful conversations and learning.
      William on the other hand has always enjoyed drinking, clubbing, and the company of females. I remember back when he first went to college over a decade ago, every day there were new pictures of him dancing and drinking the night away. He's mellowed out since becoming a father of 3, but even today, The Daily Mail website posts images of William every now and then.

    To the people who think Charles was a bad guy: Prince Charles was in love with Camilla, but was not allowed to marry her. Diana was seen as 'fit' for the RF, so they pitted the two together and hoped for the best. Put yourself in his shoes; you love someone and want to be with them, but your parents tell you that you cannot be with them and find you another person. It would be unbearable.
    He is a great person and would be a great ruler, but so many people look at him with eyes of judgement simply because of his affair. Public life and personal life should be kept seperate.

      Here’s what I don’t like about Charles. If he love Camilla so much, he would’ve choose to left the throne, left the royal family to be with the woman he loves since it’s the family that stopping him for marrying his one and only love. BUT NO, Charles wants the throne and Camilla. He’s greedy. He wanted both.
      Can you imagine if Charles left the RF to get married with Camilla? Nobody will think he’s a bad guy. He’ll be known as someone who fight for his love, without mentally abusing a perfect beautiful lady. He’ll be known as a loving person, not the bad guy. I just don’t get it why he wanted to be the king but can’t like one?

    actually all of the royals wanted to break free from any royal protocols. everyone wanted to show who they are by not just standing there or just simply wave their hands to the people. not just to show the people about who they are as the royal family but as an individual. they need to hold the firm tight by standing as one for the crown. not just charles but also anne wanted to do their individual interests and show it to the people that other than being a royal they also wanted to grow as an individual. Actually this shows that from the start royal is tackling with an identity crisis. this made them difficult for them to stand on what or who they really are since they depend on public approval and the safest way to do that is to appear poise and gallant all the time that even certain mishap can affect your reputation. charles was not a bad man. he was also a victim of being pushed all the time. he might be walking around with people around him seems like waiting for him to follow what he is about to say or order, but actually these people around him are the ones pointing him to do this and do that.

    Diana came from a very problematic abusive family. All she ever wanted was attention. After her divorce she dated a Pakistani cardiologist and once she stormed inside his Operation theatre to grab a hold of him! As a lover she was a little exhausting and very demanding. That's why she never had a long lasting relationship. Her last lover Dodi's father wanted to use her fame to expand his business. That's why they got engaged. Diana was the reason Dodi dumped his previous fiance. So in a way she too were a mistress at some point. Her problematic family ruined her life at the very beginning. Her mental illness was never treated. Otherwise who in their right mind would agree to marry elder sister's ex bf without even dating him. In TC (don't know if it was historically right or not) ,they showed she tried so hard to grab Charles' attention even when he was seeing her sister. Then when she was asked for marriage-she agreed instantly. Before marrying Charles,she mostly looked up to being a future queen. That's where she mistook it. Her attention was mostly at the crown,not at the man she was marrying. So when the marriage happened and she found his husband entirely different from her expectations- it was a hard blow for the young 20 yo lady. Poor her. Just a right family and a loving husband- she only needed those two.
    Charles as a person was never understood-both by his family and by the people. If you check out his interviews,he is a great human being who really thinks about the world and it's well being. He is also a great father. Sadly, marrying Diana was the worst thing he ever did. I guess his being madly in love with Camilla ruined their marriage any chances. At the end it it entirely the crown's fault for them not letting Charles marry Camilla in the first place. Not every man can be bent according to the crown's will.

His colder attitude in S4 strikes me as the result of how his mother and rest of the family treated him for so many years, it eventually manifested in him and he became cold. I know the show is dramatized, but I feel so sad for him when I watch.

How does his relationship with the long-dead Princess of Wales effect THIS!?
