Olivia is great as the queen, but I must say Claire Foy was the perfect for the role. She looked more similar and sounded more similar
@Marie Roberts yeah but Claire Foy sounds even a bit like her, when I re watch the real young queen speech's I feel like sometimes kind I am watching earlier the crown
I don't like Olivia very much. In more than 20% of the role she has no text and looks said into the camera without a twinkle in her eyes very unlike Queen Elizabeth herself.
The second incarnation cast was excellent. But the first, Foy, Kerby, and smith just captured it much better.
@@msdm83 Yes I agree.
I agree. They should have kept her on and aged her with make up.
These events should’ve made the entire finale episode instead of just the last 5 mins. It would’ve been super dramatic and tense. I had no idea of any of this!
I enjoyed the Silver Jubilee very much. I participated in a street party organized by a local councilwoman who laughed merrily when I asked (earnest teenager that I was) why a socialist was a monarchist. “She’s Our Queen, silly!”
How unfortunate
I did my post graduate studied at the University of Edinburgh from 1973 to 1977. I was there for the Jubilee celebrations . I attended the Investiture of Prince Charles as a Knight of the Thistle and that night was one of the waiters at the banquet in the Armory at Edinburgh Castle. I was close to all of them and the Queen noticed me. I have a silver teaspoon hall marked with the Silver Jubilee insignia.
I fail to understand why the director makes Olivia Colman scowl so much. I remember seeing The Queen at the time of the Silver Jubilee and she looked really cheerful. Of course things don't always go smoothly and The Queen is sometimes seen gritting her teeth, but I don't ever remember seeing her so persistently down in the mouth.
Olivia potraied the turmoil queen been through that time. What people saw was the queen in public. There's no point to potray a happy queen what can easily be seen
I doubt she was all smiles in private. Are you?
@@davidwinchester2349 I can't tell if you were being sarcastic.
@smadge100 they both portrayed different periods of time. You can be all smile when you are a kid and 10 years later a depressed teenager!! Life moves forward, my dear!
Well this whole season is after all ‘based on true events’ isnt it? Major plot points- most notably of that churchill’s junior secretary didn’t exist in season 1 - proves that not everything you see from the series is all true. Besides, the whole process of the crown’s series is about showing elizabeth II to be a young queen to a settled sovereign, and having more sense in situations in/out from the UK, while maintaining her personal life. DEF season 3 is more gloomy than its previous seasons, and i totally soaked into the performances. Season 3 more showed every main characters’ personal depth and flaws.
I was 7. I had a street party. A cherished school photo, some mints, a mug and some chocolates. I loved every friggin minute of it
How come the queen seems unhappy and never smiles on the Crown, but in real life she’s actually a happy person, and most of the time there’s a smile on her face.
I seen her in 1977 when I was very young child as she visited Durham. I’m going to miss my Queen RIP.
The Queen’s hat that day was FABULOUS
Ms. Olivia is always sad whereas Queen has a smiling face.
I too always thought the same. Even clair foy was always too serious and bug eyed.
I mean, we don't know how the queen is in private
She can't possibly be constantly smiling for no reason when outside the public eye.
I thought I was the only one noticing this. She's a wonderful actor but her moping through the entire season was a downer.
Fourthgirl if you watch interviews with her she says that the director wanted her to be serious to the point they had her listen to boring podcasts to keep her from being overly expressive
Everyone complaining about Oliva but I think she did her job majestically. She's playing the role as the directors told her to and the only reason the queen is portrayed like this it's because it's a show. In The Crown it's not about the queen, it's about England and its decadence, represented by the queen.
Decadence?
We did a family trip to England in 1977, from small town western Canada. I remember all the Silver Jubilee products and we were so shocked by the punk rockers LOL. Great memories.
I have such happy memories of the Jubilee. Just being given a mug and having a party was huge for us back then.
People cheered at the golden coach because if you remember season 1, there is the efficient and there is the divine. The purpose of the divine to to give something to raise people out of their doldrums. A way of life for people to aspire to. There is no point in going on, if the golden coach as it were is too far removed from even the most humblest of reaches.
My aunt and uncle were living in the UK during the jubilee. My uncle worked for an oil company at the time.
My aunt sent Mom some souvenirs from it. I think one was a tea towel, a tote bag and I think there was a coffee mug. But my favorite was the bra she sent, the Union Jack on one cup and the Stars and Stripes on the other. I think there was something silly for my dad too, since Aunt Ann wouldn’t have left her brother out of the fun. It was hilarious! Mom returned the favor by sending Uncle Tom a *deep* V undershirt (almost to the navel), appropriate for when wearing one’s leisure suit shirt deeply unbuttoned to show off one’s gold Italian horn necklace in one’s chest hair while at the discos. They kept up this silly, cross-Atlantic exchange for the whole jubilee year. It was very funny. (Remember, we’d just had our Bicentennial here the year before.)
Such a fantastic story! Lovely family memories. Thank you for sharing:) I had a good laugh
We got a silver spoon and mug at my school as mementos. We also had a country dancing display. My mum made me a red, white and blue stripy skirt to dance in. Someone made bunting for the jubilee at school. But they were too late to get rec, white and blue material. They got brown flowery material I stead. The school still uses it to this day.
The song by the Sex Pistols that the palace didn't want was beaten by "I Don't Wanna Talk About It" 😂😂😂😂
The Queen was not amused but Charles was [smirk!]
the reality was that "god save the queen" did outsell rod stewart that week but... the government rigged the charts so that they wouldn't upset the queen. many years later, johnny rotten is now a fucking sell-out right-winger who does commercial for butter. the queen is more punk rock than him. she could still kick his scrawny arse.
I remember the Silver Jubilee celebrations. I think my mum still has some souvenirs.
Yeah i remember my jubilee dress, that me and my friend had. we got a mug. And a tin of sweets with the queen on the lid. First and only street party i think we ever had, the roads were closed off to traffic.. Not that there was alot of people who had cars in our area lol.
omg that's amazing!
Drink my morning coffee out of a jubilee mug with a list of the monarchs of England. Starting with Edward the confessor ending with Her Majesty the queen. I love that 40 years latter it's still relevant.
😂.
Do the people get free souvenir? everyone on the street?
I remember it as if it was yesterday. I was 20, and this was my second in-family event. I still have the Jubilee Medal - my first such decoration. I've been blessed to have attended several other in-family events such as weddings, two other Jubilees and three Coronation Anniversaries.
Very interesting to read the comments.
As an American, obviously I wondered, maybe even scoffed, at the whole concept of monarchy, particularly a figurehead monarchy.
The show obviously opened my eyes a bit, but reading the comments really has given me taste of the genuine affection/respect people have for the woman.
In a world full of hypocrisy, I find her "stubborn dignity" reassuring.
A figurehead constitutional monarch is better than a president. A president will either represent left wing people or right wing people, but the monarch will represent ALL people. A monarch is neutral and apolitical and thats why the monarch is a symbol of unity and stability, contrary to a president who is d.ivisive and apoIiticaI
political*, sorry. Read my reply to you above
I would have loved to see the True story behind Princess Margaret's affair with Roddy Llewyn and Lord's Snowden's various infidelities.
That's a different story. This series was about The Crown.
Maybe If they have time or if matches the themes of the season and episode
It was tackled in the same episode of the silver jubilee. It was titled cri de couer, to resonate on princess margaret's situation
But that is in season 3. Have you watched it yet?
There's word that the book Lady Anne Glenconner (the woman that meets Margaret in Mustique) wrote about her life is going to be on screen.
yeah while the queen herself is known as a reserved, professional and poised person, from the many footages or pictures i've seen of her, she’s in fact has a unique sense of humor and smiles a lot, even when hosting a big event like the one involving the world leaders, you can see how animated and interactive she was. still confuses me why she was portrayed that way in the crown
If one finds oneself with a golden carriage, one may take a carriage ride; how very very lovely.
Payed for by the poor,lovely.
matthew brookes yes, but that was a very long time ago. And the English beheaded Charles I as well. It’s one of the only monarchies that’s been wronged by its people. I wonder how old the carriage is...just looked it up and it was built in 1762. The monies were no doubt earned from the unfair taxation of the colonies, an issue that’s been resolved by the Revolutionary War.
Debby R “unfair colonial taxation,” How rich. Yes, let’s not tax those who started the first ever world conflict of human history. They weren’t even taxed half of what a common Londoner had to give away, so they had no reason at all to be angry. Two thirds of the Thirteen colonies understood that, but the last one was too much occupied to thirst over Native American blood to see reason.
@@anthonybousquet3590 the only problem the colonies had with being taxed was the fact that we received absolutely no benefit nor representation from mad king Charles. That was the reason for our little kerfluffle. So sorry, old chap.
Elizabeth looked like she wanted to tell Philip to shut it. (1:00-1:10)
Lol but he wasn’t wrong..
And Liverpool won their first European Cup in Jubilee year in 1977 and Star Wars arrived that year too!
I'm an Irish girl of Irish parents but we lived in England in 1977 and I remember wearing a red ribbon and a blue and white dress on jubilee day.
I haven’t been able to watch Season 3 yet, but does Olivia Coleman ever smile at all? She looks so dreadfully unhappy.
Yes, actually quite often!
Maybe actually watch?
I’m looking forward to seeing it when I’m on holidays. I loved the first two seasons! I can’t see it up here.
I was wondering the same thing myself. In all the clips the “Queen “ seems to be perpetually frowning.
@@oopik0059I had my doubts about it. Then watched it. They nailed it. Is not incongruent, the script, the art direction, and of course the quality of the performances are outstanding. Better than the previous seasons? It adds up. The whole thing so far is what make it the crown. Olivia is superb. Yes, she doesn't match blueish eyes, but she is so good that you just don't care. There is a scene (where she doesn't smile btw)at the end of the 2nd episode when I can almost see a duplicate of The Queen itself, the real Elizabeth. Also, in the season finale, when she meets Tony at Windsor Castle, she recieves it whit a big smile although they're about to talk about a delicate matter, and she won my total affection. The gesture, the mimics is so Claire Foy. Such a wonderfull artist. Both of them. We're blessed only for remaining tuned.
Two years before Lord Mountbatten’s death. Season 4 will be interesting
He was the last Viceroy of British India, right?
No wonder Punk was in Britain while Disco was in North America. I didn't realize how difficult things were at that time - I was a kid. I still have the commemorative medallion that was given to all of us students at the time.
My favorite portrayal of The Queen: Helen Mirren and Olivia Colman
hi, I will fight everyone in these comments talking bad about Olivia’s acting. She’s an Oscar winner and The Crown is an intense drama, so yes... she won’t be smiling as much as you’d want her to. Take that energy towards the directors, not the actress
What is the beautiful triumphant track at 3:07 ?
Is it just me or does queen mother look younger than the Queen herself?
Love this videos❤❤
Nevermind the Royal family - let's take a moment to enjoy the impeccable Laura Jackson. The makeup, hair and style - all perfectly maching, a joy to watch and listen.
That commemorative plate uses Minion Pro which hadn't been out at the time. #fontforensics
Wow, amazing work!
font forensics gang!
I'd love to see my queen in the next jubilee party. I hope she'll be alive for it! God save the Queen 🇬🇧
I'm sure she will be.
Yeah... ... ... ... ... ... ...
I think the series ending in Queen Elizabeth’s Golden Jubilee would make the most sense. Here’s why:
1: The Silver Jubilee takes place in the finale of the 3rd season. The show was intended to go for 6 seasons. Thus making the show’s mid-point the Silver Jubilee & Finale be the Golden Jubilee.
2: The show runners for the longest time stated they wanted to end the series at some point in the 21st century and the Golden Jubilee was in 2002.
3: 2002 was also the year Elizabeth lost her mom and sister. So having the tragedy mixed with the celebration would be a fitting end for the Crown.
what name of the music? i love it..
En la serie la reyna nunca se vio sonreir ni cuando era joven y en los documentales la reyna Isabel siempre se ve muy platicadora y sonriente
Love this show but this episode was a disappointment. The Jubilee aspect of the story felt tacked-on. I was surprised that this was the last episode of the season-there was no tension or any dramatic build-up to suggest a season finale
And what about her blue eyes? I saw the Queen when she was about thirty years old. She had stunning blue eyes.
It's about the acting, not about eye color. Who cares.
@@dan_hitchman007 me, I care. It very much bothers me that nobody bothered to equip HBC or Olivia with blue contacts.
@@victoriadiesattheend.8478 What if they tried and Olivia had an allergic reaction? It might be hard to act if your eyes are irritated.
@@dan_hitchman007 ...and HBC did too? I know for a fact that she can wear them. She wore them in at least one film.
I read somewhere that the director experimented with blue contact lenses, and with digital correction, but in both instances, the dramatic story telling was diminished. So they settled on “incorrect eye colour,” not only for the Queen, but also for Princess Margaret.
No matter how fun a party is, or how much people want to let loose for once, there's always some killjoys who come along and try to ruin it.
@2:45 Nice shot of punk Adam Ant. And yes there was a punk movie called Jubilee during that time.
That's...actually like a Queen's merch! 😂 Also, I didn't know God Save The Queen song was in the jubilee era 😂
The actor playing Charles has this continual "oh poor me" expression... you'd think he was playing Charles' second son.
1972 was the silver jubilee in Thailand. Five years before the United Kingdom’s silver jubilee.
Here straight from season 3.
Vivian Westward was actually a huge Prince Charles fan. She just adored him. She designed the pictures of the Queen wearing with safety pins etc which were v. cool.
Not us, you.
Oooiii Margaret ☹️☹️
Why does this version of the Queen look perpetually constipated? It reminds me of Anthony Hopkins in Oliver Stone’s “Nixon”, where he looked so sweaty and uptight throughout. When they showed actual footage of Nixon at the end, he looked relaxed and downright handsome by comparison.
Her pink outfit was very lovely 💞
Crazy that Elizabeth 2, is not only longest serving British monarch ever, but longest serving monarch ever in the world. Pretty cool. From America
Joe Cook Actually not quite yet. She has five years to go till she surpasses Louis XIV of France who reigned seventy-two years.
@@januarysson5633 really? I heard wrong on a you tube.
But thanks for setting it straight, mate. 72 years for Louis the 14th or 16th.

Porque? No te gusta la Reina?
I couldn’t understand why the Duke of Edinburgh was omitted from the journey in the State Coach.
Watch The Crown’s first 2 seasons.
@@CrazyWatcher670 I did watch it, but I’m also referencing the actual historical event, the DoE road in the Golden State Coach with the Queen.
I'm fairly confident that 'God Save The Queen' did make it to number 1 on the charts, but the music press chose to publish it with the top spot blank (as per the documentary 'The Filth and The Fury'). On one hand, it's great that a bunch of working class teenagers could upset the establishment so much, but also tragic that they get no sympathy for being dangled like puppets before the presses and robbed of their earnings.
Bread and games.
would have been amazing if in the silver jubilee, the top spot of the UK charts was topped by the band Queen
The Queen's pink hat was not my taste to put it nicely. The same with the ensemble for Charles' investure.
Jubilee is one of those words that the more you say the more it seems nonsensical.
her serious and sad face was somewhat exaggerated, and she walks awkwardly and holds the purse does not remember the Queen at all
Sometimes I think that Olivia does too deep on her playing, because the real Elisabeth is not that dramatic, the woman is like a robot.
I was a massive fan of the show with Clair Foye in the roll. But, I really did not feel like Coleman captured the essence of Her Majesty the Queen. I could not even finish the season. Looking forward to see who they cast for season 5 and 6 though
@@DJ-uy8qp You want the public image portrayal. The show is going for the inner turmoil of a person not known for large scale emotions.
The Queen was not like a robot, she was posed and always smiling
I mean I love the Crown... But I shouldn't need to watch these videos as well to completely understand everything.. Why was none of this highlighted in that last episode.. I love marget episodes but I feel like this could have been its own thing
MJC I found this season choppy. Olivia Coleman is a superb actor but I did not like her as the Queen. Then I watched some old clips on the Pathe news reel and she does it well. Her face is a little to “sad sack” and physically she’s more “dumpy” that HM but otherwise well done.
@@WhirlyPearly I felt like Olivia was great but wasnt given half as much screen time as Claire. Was very odd... Like i feel like we got to really know claires queen.. And I felt like all the charecters in this series just played equal parts... There was no lead
It's about the characters more than the event. Plus, it costs a lot of money for CG recreations of huge crowds and period locations.
@@dan_hitchman007 the comment was written over a year ago... We've moved on from this. Been another series since.
“Britain was struggling economically, politically, racially, and socially.” When HASN’T the U.K. been like this. 😂
Literally 😭. It’s like going round and round and round
Well, the UK is faring much better now than it did in 1977.

Isn't that Adam Ant in the one eye shady eye makeup in the middle of this video? Even from the Punk movie The Jubilee...
Yes - a very young adam ant.
Laura Jackson should be the Queen!
Did the host of the video start her narration in clipped posh English tones then when it came to referring to the Queen's home say "Book-ing-Am Palace"?
Sometimes I need subtitles because I can't be sure of the host's words. I thought I heard her say "accession" at the beginning of the video. Isn't it supposed to be "ascension"?
Yes. probably forgot she was being filmed and slipped back into her true accent! Like The Crown, not quite spot on, but unlike the Crown not quite as entertaining!
Not sure the public will have the same appreciation for Charles
Who is Laura Jackson?
Olivia doesn't embody the queen at all. She is a good actress but has not done her research or her temperament just simply doesn't fit that of HM.
Why Olivia Colman is always sad :(? Queen Elizabeth is always smiling :)
They were portraying Elizabeth's inner thoughts. The smiles were usually plastered on for the public.
Start from 3:07 . What’s the ost?
Got it guys... Audiomachine - Sol Invictus
couldn't they have got a better person to present this than this woman? she's talking like it's a BB episode
Why colman always has a sad face in this show? The queen was always smiling wth...I can't stand that ridiculous sad face of hers.
Omg ofc you only see her smiling bc shes in front of cameras. What about in private?!
That hat is ironic ❤
Cool
1977 UK sounds like US Today....
The UK was the Sick Man of Europe in 1977. It almost looked like the Soviet Block.
It’s kinda pathetic seeing so many British people celebrating the queen in those old videos
Where is Anita Rani!??
The Sex Pistols story is more interesting to me. Arrested for having an opinion against the monarchy?
Nobody arrested them, where did you get that??
@@GodisMyNo1 4:21
nobody in their right minds, who have "class" would watch that!! its still made in the philippines, in which the actresses who played the roles of the princesses are just "Maids in the Phils." got it???

Yet More Hypnosis.
Sadly Olivia Colemans portrayal of the Queen is morbid and unpalatable as a consequence. Seems to be a common observation. The third series is seriously less appealing than the first two, and Clair Foy outshines Coleman easily.
The Sex Pistols did go #1 but powers that be made it #2.
AS damn well it should have been!

Why is it that all these actors have long, sad and insufferable faces? As if they were in constant pain? Disgusts me.
Laura Jackson...such an american name...

Claire Foy was a much better Elizabeth II
Were Britons able to eat with the Jubille?
I would rather the host to stand on her feet not sitting down and less acting instead of delivering the information. She is not an actress I suppose.
