  • One simply couldn’t be more excited. Season 4 of The Crown, starring Olivia Colman as the Queen, Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher and newcomer Emma Corrin as Princess Diana, is streaming on Netflix from November 15. Learn everything you need to know about the new series and how it was made in this video.
As the 1970s are drawing to a close, Queen Elizabeth and her family find themselves preoccupied with safeguarding the line of succession by securing an appropriate bride for Prince Charles (Josh O’Connor), who is still unmarried at 30. As the nation begins to feel the impact of divisive policies introduced by Britain's first female Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, tensions arise between her and the Queen which only grow worse as Thatcher leads the country into the Falklands War, generating conflict within the Commonwealth. While Charles’ romance with a young Lady Diana Spencer provides a much-needed fairytale to unite the British people, behind closed doors, the Royal family is becoming increasingly divided.

I watched all 10 episodes in one go. I had fallen in love with Charles last season, but in this new one I found him simply detestable. How did he go from being a sensitive, charming boy to such a cold, angry, calculating person? In season 3 I had compassion for him, but after watching season 4 I just can't bear the way he treats Diana. He acts like she's the reason for his unhappiness, like he resents her for everything but HE is the one who took an interest in her in the first place, who asked her out, who asked her in marriage. That poor girl never asked for anything except for love. Also, I remember loving the portrayal of the Queen by Claire Foy, she was the Crown but she was still human, with compassion and heart. I was honestly surprised as how cold and unloving the Queen was in this season, with her children, with Diana. I feel like, one way or another, they all become what they loathed when they were younger. This is a brilliant show, with brilliant actors. Gillian Anderson was perfect as Thatcher.

but that’s just how people are. he is unhappy because noone let him be happy (also it’s kind of implied that camilla is not that into him, which makes that even more tragic), his parents never actually understood or been particularly kind to him either. so he, like so many others, projects this unhappiness onto diana, cause she is close by, and cause it’s easy. now he has someone to blame for his misery, as he sees her as a literal obstacle between himself and camilla who he (mistakenly?) sees as his ultimate happy ending. it’s just like ann said, he lives in a fantasy. I do feel sorry for him in a way, as his behavior is very ordinary and human. he is just a guy in a marriage he actually never wanted but didn’t have it in him to prevent by abdication. his resentment of diana was inevitable

As someone who lived in the UK during this time, I would like to address comments that this Season portrays Charles as spoilt, selfish and immature. That is how most people in Britain saw him during his early years of marriage, even though he was more popular in his youth. He flaunted his relationship with Camilla and made no attempt to hide it. This infuriated the public, because here was a man who had every privilege life could offer, but always wanted more. Moreover, the palace would have tolerated his affair if he had been discrete. If Prince Phillip had affairs (which many including this series have claimed) at least he did not damage the monarchy. However, Charles' irresponsible behaviour led to him becoming an object of ridicule for a time. It is the Queen's sustained dedication to her duties, and the good character of Prince William, which eventually saved the British monarchy and restored its popularity in Britain.

“It’s not my job to tell the true story of Charles. It’s not what we’re doing at all”. We definitely have to remember that as a show is a portrayal and story based off of truth with a lot of fillers to make it a show. Because the actors are so good and so is the writing, it’s hard to remember that it is the show and we have to hear everything from the real people themselves and their actions in public.

Everything involved in this production is incredible. I just can't believe the amount of effort, and casting involved. Never mind all the detail. The scripts, and research must have been huge work!!!! Although, it may not be 100% correct as per actual events and conversations, it is a work of art in every way. Thankyou all. Congratulations.

Amazing cast. Gillian Anderson nailed Thatcher. Olivia Coleman nailed the Queen. Tobias Menzies nailed it when I first noticed him in Rome. Then he does GoT and nails it. Since then, he keeps popping up in the best shows or films.
Then there's Helena Bonham-Carter. She always nails it. Pure quality actress. She mentioned something interesting about how your character can rub off on you, especially one you become familiar with and play the role for an extended period of time.
Apparently, it's not uncommon for an actor to temporarily adopt some of their character's traits when they're making a film or in the run of a play. Some do it unwittingly, some will intentionally stay in character whether they're working or not. I believe Daniel Day-Lewis adopt this method.
As much as I can respect an actor's devotion to their craft and appreciate how constantly staying in character can have a powerful impact on your performance, I am also reminded of the legendary story about Dustin Hoffman and Lawrence Olivier during the filming of, Marathon Man. Hoffman was a method actor and hammered himself during the shoot. He became a Marathon Man, running all the time. Lost a fair bit of weight. Whereas, Olivier was old skool, a classically trained Shakespearean actor. Method acting did not compute. After Hoffman stayed awake for two or three days in order to look more convincing as a torture victim, Olivier made his famous quip. Although, the exact wording changes from story to story, the basic message is the same.
"My dear boy, why don't you simply try acting?" lmao!

Mustn't forget Tobias Menzies' portrayals of Frank and Black Jack in Outlander!

    • @bullzdawguk

@@777cmr222 Thanks for your comment. I didn't know he was in Outlander. To be honest, Outlander has never appealed to me. Plus, it hasn't had much promotion in the UK. At least, I haven't noticed any.
If anything, you highlighted how he is in demand as an actor. Personally, I believe the best actors are not the huge stars. Huge stars are destined to fade, which makes any lesser part of their career pale in comparison. The enduring actor is the character actor. They are still well known for their work and retain their celebrity throughout their career. By keeping their star at a constant shine, they don't appear to fade. Also, their career isn't linked to the success of film or TV show they appeared in. Instead, they're judged by their performance, no matter if it was a flop or not. It's how they keep their demand, stay in the business and tend to have the longest careers and remain well-known.
The vast majority of my favourite actors are character actors. I suppose the best example is, Maggie Smith. She's had an exceptional career and still works in her old age. Hollywood has never hyped her career and she's maintained her star appeal without it. Then again, she is British. lol
British actors appear to know precisely how to keep their ego in check. Even child stars tend to grow up without being overly affected. The Harry Potter kids are a perfect example. So glad Rowling decided against hiring American kids. Freddie Highmore is another. I'm not saying everyone is perfect, but they do have a better track record.
