"A true artist" - Annie Nightingale's Powerful Tribute to Friend Ian Dury (2010)

On 7 January 2010, legendary DJ Annie Nightingale spoke to ITN about her late friend, punk icon Ian Dury. She was speaking at the premiere of Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, the biopic of Ian Dury starring Andy Serkis.
Anie Nightingale has sadly died aged 83. Becoming the first female DJ on Radio 1 in 1970 (and remaining the only woman on the station for another 12 years), Nightingale is remembered as a trailblazer for women in the industry, having played an important role in shining a light on some of the most important acts of the punk and new wave period.

I'm glad the ITN archive has released this little gem. Annie was truly the very last person at Radio 1 who represented a time when radio was not only a personable experience, but a ritual for people who loved music like myself. These days it's mostly pre-recorded, presenterless rubbish on a night, but when I started listening under the covers on FM you had a plethora of DJ's on the night shift each week bringing you the most amazing music you'd ever hope to discover, and Annie was certainly one of them. (Once) underground genres like Dubstep, Grime and even Trap have a lot to thank her for, and of course not forgetting the late John Peel's valiant efforts to bring us these weird and wonderful new sounds. Sadly I think today is the day it can never be the same again. Rest in peace Annie Nightingale ❤
