1974 Cypriot Coup D'etat - Chilling Footage of Cyprus on Eve of Turkish Invasion (1974)

  • On 18 July 1974, ITN's Michael Nicholson reported from the Cypriot capital of Nicosia. Three days before, a Greek-backed coup d'etat by the Cyprus National Guard had deposed the country's president, Archbishop Makarios III, and replaced him with Greek Cypriot nationalist Nikos Sampson. In the final hours before the Sampson regime implemented strict censorship laws, ITN's cameras recorded the evidence of the National Guard's violent takeover. They filmed troops manning checkpoints on street corners and guarding the burnt-out ruins of government buildings damaged by tank fire during the coup. Michael Nicholson also managed to secure an exclusive interview with Sampson after the acting president held his first press conference. Nicholson questioned Sampson on the legitimacy of the new regime, while Sampson repeatedly denied any involvement by the Greek government in what he insisted was a "revolution", rejecting Nicholson's description of the takeover as a "coup". Omenously, Sampson was asked whether he was worried about the prospects of a Turkish invasion. "No, I am not worried," he responded flatly. Turkish forces would invade Cyprus by sea and air just 48 hours later, leading to Sampson's resignation and imprisonment after a mere eight days in power.

@minekara6407 Netanyahu? Sampson was a gunman who was happy to pull the trigger himself not send jet's to bomb buildings. Cyprus didn't even have any war planes. Turkey did though.
Ex EOKA B member's including Sampson had friendly relations with militant Palestinians from the PLO and even left wing PFLP, Syria, and Libyan intelligence services.

@@Pyrrhic537 according to your comment, Sampson must be a leftist. At the same time he was determined to realize an ethnic cleansing Nazi-style on the island. Weird minds have those murderers.
You also try to blame Turks having war planes, as if this was a crime. I am sure those Sampson's terrorists were having a high self-confidence, that Turkey would not start a war by using these planes, without the permission of US. Bingo 😃😃, wrong guess.
Turkey is not Geeece. Greece would always feel forced to ask for permission. However, in some critical cases Turkey would not ask, even in its weakest situation like in 1974. This is historically so. This is because of being a "big state".

He did not make a mistake. Probably he was under the control of the West who gave a green light to him to stage a coup so that the Turks could occupy the island. He could have done this in two ways: 1) He knew what the Turks would do in such a case but probably he was assured by the UK that they would prevent Turkey to do such thing or 2) he was an agent of the UK doing his duty as per usual. To cut a long story short, the UK wanted Turkey to occupy the island otherwise, the island management under Makarios and powerful AKEL(communist party) was inclining toward the Soviet Union.

Poor Cypriot Greek people were suppressed by EOKA and the criminal people like Sampson and Grivas. In the early stages of EOKA organisation, Cypriot Greek business people who had refused to fund EOKA against Cypriot Turks were assassinated by these people. After successfully suppressing the Greek Cypriots, they changed their attention against the Cypriot Turks. Bad and long effects of the expansionist dreams of Greece on the island still dominate the political thinking and life among the Cypriot Greeks.

Greek cypriots, never estimated the world's balanced of that time . That so , after a lot of pressure , they ended up with the islands independence. On 60s.
      Unfortunately ,
From 58 , the Turkish cypriots minority , started a struggle against the Greek cypriots , trying to convince their population that the tow communities cannot live peaceful together.
With the establishment of our common state at early 60s , the constitution, was giving to the Turkish cypriots minority, a large status, about their participation in the new states rulings and functions. ( from a minority of 18% , they had rights / over rights , like they were 30%-40% )

He was sentenced to 20 year's imprisonment in August 1976. He was released in 1978 when his sentence was suspended after President Kyprianou allowed him to go for emergency medical treatment in Munich after he helped to get the president's son released from EOKA B kidnappers several month's earlier. I know every detail about this as a family member was involved.
At that stage the Western powers that be wanted him released. I'm not stating why here. They include the US, W Germany, a reluctant UK, and another country I'm not mentioning.
He escaped Munich after a Turkish nurse spotted him and he was warned by some intelligence operative that there was a Turkish hit squad planning to kill him.
He went to Paris and lived between there and Marseille for about 8 year's. He made contact with diplomats and other's including Armenians, Palestinians, Syrians and Libyans. He was a great friend of several Greek Shipowners plus Corsican casino owner's.
He returned to Cyprus in 1989 and was imprisoned but was pardoned in 1991.

Why was it necessary to ethnically cleanse the north? The result of this "peace mission" is that even today Greeks are waiting to be allowed to live in their homes again. samson pust idi . makarios da bi-sexual. antlasamadilar, kalktilar kavgaya...bak oku hikayesini ingilizler tarafindan...Does anyone know what Operation Sunshine is, or was? It is, or was, an MI6 operation in Cyprus back in 1959. The details are revealed in the enlightening research of Stephen Dorril under the title “MI6-Inside the Covert World of Her Majesty’s Secret Intelligence Service.”
The summary is as follows: Cyprus was drawn into ethnic conflict in the late 1950s. Armed, right-wing Greek bands were carrying out attacks against British rule on the island and against Turkish civilians - something that would be named as an attempt at ethnic cleansing in today’s world. In response, Turkey secretly helped an embryonic resistance among Turkish Cypriots, organizing and arming them.
The Brits decided to take effective steps. MI6 started to tap some VIP telephones, relying on the cutting-edge technology of the day in order to prevent further killings and provide a basis for a settlement between Greek and Turkish Cypriots. The names included the Greek leader, Archbishop Marakios III. While eavesdropping on Makarios’ lines in order to obtain some political and military information, they recorded some other stuff by mistake - “Rather unusual homosexual proclivities,” as described by the book.
That was in 1958 and when Makarios resisted signing an agreement with Turkish Cypriots under the guarantee of Britain, Turkey and Greece in 1959 in Zurich, he had a visitor in his hotel room with some information to share. Makarios changed his mind overnight, came down to the hotel lobby where his Turkish counterpart Fazıl Küçük was waiting and signed the first treaty on Cyprus which lead the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus in 1960.
That was Operation Sunshine. That is a part of the background story about how the Republic of Cyprus with Makarios as the president and Küçük as the deputy president was established.

In Cyprus, there were a steadfast Communist support for President Makarios. Also Cypriote Communist party was faithful to the Soviet Union..In 1973 the coup of Brigadier Ioannides in Greece, a U.Sbacked general, because his opposition against socialists and communism and the subsequent coup by 39-year-old Nikos Sampson in. Cyprus used against churchman Makarios.. Sampson declared himself the leader of the Hellenic Republic of Cyprus. On July 19, 1974,Making a speech at the Council in London , Makarios said that the Greeks occupied Cyprus and that the Greek flag was flying in all Cypriot government offices and that there were great losses and that the Greeks were murdered Cypriots and more dangerous than the Turks and that the independence of Cyprus had disappeared and its people were in danger. Britain and US did not support Makarios. It's not hard to understand why .The Turkish Army landed on the island from Kyrenia Karaoğlan location on the morning of July 20, 1974.Meanwhile, on July 23, the Greek junta in Athens Greece was overthrown and N.Sampson resigned in Nicosia. During and after the actual operation The Turks where in matters where they had rightful cause with some politicians incompetent attitudes and demands in many agreements, meetings and negotiations over the years. This prevented gains for Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots in Turkey's rightful cause. The fact that the guarantor state, England, did not want to take the initiative caused many problems. With this operation, the Turkish Cypriots were protected and the annexation of the island to Greece was prevented, but even if the operation was not carried out, I think the annexation of Cyprus to Greece would never have happened.

For in that case Samson would not only be worried but would also be prepared for it.
When he gave this interview, he probably thought the Turks too were on his side. Before the "revolution" Samson and his followeres as well as the junta of Athens were accusing Makarios of "communist politics". Therefore, in their logic, the Turks too would be happy to see him gone.

there is also a silly reason why samson and makarios went against each other! makarios was a peculiar man who enjoyed sex with young boys. samson was gay but makarios did not want to assosiate with him...there is the story...Does anyone know what Operation Sunshine is, or was?
That British-made fragile structure began to fall apart a few years later, ultimately leading to theTurkish military intervention which divided Cyprus into two in 1974.

The Turkish invasion of Cyprus was orchestrated by the State department in US under that big enemy of Hellenism Henry Kissinger, the British supported and aided the Turks during the invasion and wete instrumental in the pre-planned invasion. The partition of Cyprus was planned years earlier as was the exact areas of the island to be occupied. Cyprus was betrayed by the US and the British and the Greek government was blackmailed by the Americans against intervening to help the Greeks of Cyprus. 50 years later Cyprus continues to be occupied and partitioned and nobody cares or has pressured the Turk in finding a solution , what is more worrying the Turk has designs on the rest of the Island.

Cyprus will be united and a peaceful country, when Greece, Turkey and especially Britain - like they interfere in the Russia Ukraine agreements - will leave the island alone. Mr Sampson was the useful idiot for the coup. Many who fought for the "enosis" supported the coup, not knowing that the Greek government, never wanted it because USA was against it and Turkey was threatening Greece.
So for another 1 time since the ancient times Greece betrayed Cyprus and the whole problem is very difficult to be solved because Greek politicians and a few Cypriots, agreed and even signed the occupation of the half island from Turkey.

  • @gamwsas
    @gamwsas Před měsícem +20

The occupation of Northern Cyprus by Turkey is widely regarded as illegal under international law for several compelling reasons:
    1. Violation of Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity
United Nations Charter: The UN Charter emphasizes the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence of all member states. Turkey's military intervention and continued presence in Northern Cyprus are seen as a breach of these principles. Articles 2(4) and 2(7) of the Charter prohibit the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state and call for the non-intervention in domestic affairs.
    2. United Nations Security Council Resolutions
Resolution 541 (1983): This resolution declared the declaration of independence by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) legally invalid and called for its withdrawal. It reaffirmed the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus.
Resolution 550 (1984): This further condemned the secessionist activities and called for all states not to recognize the purported state of the TRNC and to respect the sovereignty of Cyprus.
    3. Treaty of Guarantee
Misuse of Treaty Provisions: While Turkey cites the 1960 Treaty of Guarantee as justification for its intervention, the treaty does not grant a unilateral right to military intervention. It requires consultation among the guarantor powers (Turkey, Greece, and the UK) and only allows for action to restore the constitutional order of Cyprus. Turkey's actions went beyond this scope, leading to a partition rather than a restoration of order.
    4. International Court of Justice (ICJ) and Precedents
ICJ Opinions: While the ICJ has not directly ruled on the Cyprus issue, its advisory opinions in other cases emphasize the principles of non-recognition of territorial acquisition by force. For instance, the ICJ's opinion on the Occupied Palestinian Territories underscores that no territorial acquisition resulting from the threat or use of force shall be recognized as legal.
    5. European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) Rulings
Violations of Human Rights: The ECHR has ruled against Turkey in several cases related to the occupation, including violations of property rights, the right to life, and prohibitions against inhumane treatment. These rulings reinforce the illegal nature of the occupation by highlighting systemic violations of human rights.
    6. Lack of International Recognition
Isolation of TRNC: The TRNC is only recognized by Turkey. The international community, through various organizations including the UN and the European Union, continues to recognize the Republic of Cyprus as the sole legitimate government of the entire island. This lack of recognition underscores the illegitimacy of the Turkish occupation under international law.
    7. Ethnic Cleansing and Demographic Changes
Forced Displacement: The Turkish invasion led to the forced displacement of around 200,000 Greek Cypriots from the north and a smaller number of Turkish Cypriots from the south. International law, including the Fourth Geneva Convention, prohibits such forced demographic changes and ethnic cleansing.
    In conclusion:
The occupation of Northern Cyprus by Turkey is widely regarded as illegal under international law due to the violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus, the condemnation and non-recognition by the United Nations, the misuse of the Treaty of Guarantee, rulings by the European Court of Human Rights, and the principle that territorial acquisition by force is inadmissible. The international community's consistent non-recognition of the TRNC further underscores the illegitimacy of the occupation.

While the violence against Turkish Cypriots before 1974 was reprehensible and required a response, Turkey's continued occupation of Northern Cyprus is clearly illegal under international law. International resolutions condemn this occupation, and it remains unrecognized globally, underscoring its illegitimacy.

Cyprus which was ruled by different suzerains, but which never in its entire history came under Greek rule, was conquered by the Ottomans in 1571 and ruled by them until 1878 when it was leased to Biritish for 49 years who then stopped paying rent to Ataturk in 1925. so stop looking for reasons why Turkey came at the time it did because you never had the rule over Cyprus. in fact it was a good gesture when Turkey did not take control over whole cyprus which legally owns!

You are an occupying invader, and this is recognized by the international community. That is why free Cyprus is a developed first-world country and a member of the EU, while the part occupied by Turkey is in the Middle Ages.

Play stupid games wins stupid prizes. I'm a Greek Cypriot and I fully agree with your statement. This idea about Enosis, which in fact really means Greece annexing Cyprus, was the stupidest idea in the history of Cyprus ever. Sampson was a traitor, and Makarios was a useful idiot. EOKA 1955-59 sacrificed themselves to liberate Cyprus from the British and gain for the 1st Cyprus Republic to form, for EOKA B' 20 years later to betray their fallen compatriots and demolish the Republic to get annexed by the dictatoric Junta of Greece. Stupid stupid people. And now we are paying for their mistakes and treason.
