    I’ll never forget watching that CBJ-TBL series. I had a playoff bracket pool with a bunch of my friends, and because I love a good underdog story, I was the only one who picked the Jackets. I won that bracket on that series alone.

    The 2005-2006 Red Wings lost in the first round (conference quarterfinals) to Edmonton, not the conference finals. Also, other posters are right, you should have picked the 95-96 Wings.

    Worst part of that own goal was that it was on Steve Smith's 23rd birthday. Talk about passing up a birthday present, or throwing it away in his case. I bet whenever he meets people who just turned 23 themselves they would ask him what he did on his 23rd birthday.
    "Well, I scored the eventual game and series winning goal in the Battle of Alberta back in 1986."
    (Except, it was the series winning goal that counted for our opponents, which prevented us from continuing our dynasty that year.)
    Cheer up, Smith. At least the Oilers weren't the last team to be denied from winning 3 straight cups after having it happen again in 1989. Happened to Pittsburgh twice in a 25 year span, and Tampa Bay just last post-season.

    The 2009-2010 Caps team should have been in the list over the other Caps teams that lost to the Pens. Halak stole that series against the best offensive team the Caps ever had. They had Ovi, Semin, Backstrom and Green at their peaks.

      Pens should have lost the previous year to the Rangers, who won the Presidents Trophy and had the Hart winner (Messier) AND Norris winner (Leetch) on the same team. The stupid 10 day lockout derailed that Rangers team. They were ROLLING before that happened and would have won the Cup had there been no lockout, in my opinion. What goes around comes around.

    Now the 2022-23 Boston Bruins would be on here. They broke regular season records set by the 2018-19 Tampa Bay Lightning en route to a Presidents Trophy, had a 3-1 series lead over a Panthers team who took big steps back from the previous season (starting with the Huberdeau and Weegar for Tkachuk trade with Calgary during the 2022 off-season), and they choked. Starting a goalie that was in pain and dealing with an injury instead of a healthier goalie. Worst part was that it ended up being Bergeron and Krejci's final season before retirement.

    @lakeeriesailor2852 Před rokem

    you forgot the 1970-71 Boston Bruins and 1981-82 Edmonton Oilers. The 71 bruins set a record at the time for most regular season points (121 in only a 78 game schedule, and overtime didn't exist back then, so they would have had at least 130 points in an 82 game schedule and with OT shootouts). Also record for most goals in a regular season at the time. They lost to the Canadiens in the opening round, the biggest upset in history at the time. The 81-82 Oilers finished 2nd overall but lost to an LA Kings team 48 points weaker in the standings in the opening round. That still IS the biggest flop in NHL history bar none. I would not count the 2010-11 Vancouver Canucks as a flop, since they did at least get to the finals.

    About those 85-86 Oilers, they had about 15 minutes after that own goal by Smith, which in part was forced by Lanny McDonald swooping in on him.
    So the highly touted Oilers’ offense (some of which are named in the video) couldn’t overcome a one point deficit in more than half a period.
    You can’t blame Smith for that.
    For all their firepower they failed to tie up the game.

    • @Mo-ix4ov
      @Mo-ix4ov Před 10 měsíci

      Even though it is true that the Oilers had a good part of the third period to score another goal, Flames forward Perry Berezan chucked the puck deep into the Oilers zone and went for a line change. It was with NO pressure on Steve Smith when he collected the puck and went to make an outlet pass. Anywa, the funniest thing about this victory is that even when Calgary won, it took an Oiler to score the series clinching goal. ;)

    "to never win the Stanley Cup..." I do think the title is a bit misleading, since to me "best to never win..." implies franchises, teams who throughout their entire history have never won the championship, not just great line-ups in a specific playoff year failing to achieve victory and raise the cup.
    Other than that, good vid. For specific line-ups in particular play-off years... the Detroit Red Wings could have been on your list at least 5 or 6 times - they had a lot of damn good years in the regular season where they still missed winning the cup afterwards.
    ps: there are 11 NHL teams currently playing that have never won the Stanley Cup.
