    "Swing" is the act of attacking, usually directly to cause damage. The phrase originates from baseball as there are many ways to respond or stop an attack in Yugioh, so "swinging" means your attempting an attack and are waiting to see if it's a hit or miss. It's typically presented as a question, and a player will usually say the attack power of the attacking monster to make things easier for the other player.
    Example: "Swing for 3000?"
    "Crash" refers to when 2 monsters of the same attack battle, which in the rules destroys both. Since this is usually done on purpose, it's seen as "Crashing" one monster into another.
    "Handtrap" describes a type of card which can be activated in your hand during your opponents turn. As Trap cards can be hidden and used on your opponents turn, these are seen as traps that are in your hand instead of on the field. Oddly enough the majority of handtraps aren't actually trap cards themselves, but monster cards with similar effects.
    There are also terms used for cards that have common types of effects, which were popularized by certain notable cards throughout the years, used to quickly explain how a new card works. Like say for instance I were to explain the effect of a new card to a player who was unfamiliar with it, I might simply say "It's a ____" instead of reading out the entire effect text.
    Rota: A phrase that refers to any spell card that adds a certain type of monster from your deck to your hand, which are very common. Named after the spell card "Reinforcements of the army"(typically shortened to ROTA) which was the first type of card to use this effect.
    Stratos: Similar to the above, except refering to a monster which adds another monster of a specific archtype to the hand when it's summoned. Named after one of the first and most well known user of this effect, Elemental Hero Stratos.
    Garnet: A card that is played in your deck that you DON'T want to draw. Usually as part of a particular combo. Named after Gem-knight Garnet, a monster with no effect. Players would put a single copy of it in their deck in order to use the card brilliant fusion, which could fuse a Gem-knight(of which Garnet had the highest attacks and therefore was used over others) and any light attribute to summon a useful fusion monster. The catch was it fused these 2 monster from the deck and ONLY the deck, meaning if Garnet was in your hand both it and brilliant fusion were rendered useless.

    "Brick" is also a card that is useless if you draw it to your hand (e.g., a card you need in your deck or graveyard to do something, and drawing it makes other cards not function correctly...though "Garnet" after "Gem-Knight Garnet" from the Brilliant Fusion engine has become a more common term). Brick can also refer to not having a way to access your main combo pieces in your opening hand...such as only being able to normal summon a monster and you don't get any effects off to do anything beyond that.

    • @lortsilk6416
      @lortsilk6416 Před 4 lety +9

      I would differ between a brick and a garnet, garnet is a term which( as you mentioned) can make a whole engine/ gameplan useless while a brick can be for example 5 handtraps, for me a brick is a combination of cards in your hand that doesnt let you play your gameplan

    • @Kylora2112
      @Kylora2112 Před 4 lety +3

      @@lortsilk6416 Yeah, Garnet is "makes an engine not work if you draw it because the primary card needs it in the deck" and brick is either garbage hand or "card you need to use resources/effects to get it where it needs to be because it's useless in your hand." Wulf, Lightsworn Beast (and Felis, Lightsworn Archer) is the best example of a brick draw card...you *can* discard it with Lumina to summon it back, but that's not how you want to actually get it on the field (you want to mill it with Raiden and the like).

    "Piercing" and "Banished" were also fan terms that became official as konami needed to use more concise language to make up for longer text blocks of effects. "Piercing" means defense monsters that are beaten act like they are in attack mode but use defense stats for calculation. "Banished" replaced "remove from play" when other cards started interacting with cards in the category, and konami fully embraced it with card lore about what the banished dimension looks like. I'd like to issue a thought on floating. I've always known that term as for a card who has an automatic affect activation when it's summoned or when it leaves the field. Princeton plasma when he summoned has a floating effect that automatically negates all monster effects on your opponent's side of the field. While absolute zero has an effect that if he leaves the field for any reason. He nukes my opponents monsters

    • @timaeus22222
      @timaeus22222 Před 4 lety +2

      Last I recall, floating just meant an effect where the monster replaces itself after leaving the field. Officially, it can be either through regenerating card advantage, or literally floating into another summoned monster. yugioh.fandom.com/wiki/Floater

    • @Ruby_Mullz
      @Ruby_Mullz Před 4 lety +1

      stitches neither of those are floaters, plasma is a floodgate and as u said absolute zero just nukes, but if absolute zero special summoned a monster after it was destroyed then it would be a floating effect. :)

    Here are some other words:
    Errata: A change in the card text.
    Erratas are made in order to update the terminoligy of the card, Fix mistakes, to clarify the effects of the card so that it is easier to understand and etc.
    It also occurs in order to nerf a certain card to get it of the Ban-list like the Crush card Virus.
    Going Plus/Minus: this is used to clarify how much of a card advantage in your hand one card can provide.
    For example:
    Pot of greed makes you go Plus 1 since you have to send POG to the grave in order to get 2 cards.

    Netdecks are a great starting point, like cooking new recipes found online. Playing well-built deck found online can provide insight into a how an archetype or strategy works, which can then be tweaked and modified for personal tastes. Additionally, I find it fun looking up tournament strategies from years long-gone by and building some of those decks in Legacy of the Duelist to play with a slice of Yu-Gi-Oh history. Some are still quite good, others need some adjustment of support cards around the main strategy, others get torn to shreds despite once being a first-place deck.

    Great video tgs! Very quick and concise, but you clearly define each term.
    The only one I’d say was a little off, but not wrong, was the buff and nerf. While they do mean what you said, in yugioh, I more commonly hear that referred to a certain deck/archetype getting direct or indirect support. It could also refer to a card that got banned or came of the list, that helped a certain strategy.
    All those things would either “buff” or “nerf” a deck in their consistency, power, or both!

    fun fact: the term Mill comes from the MTG card Millstone, which made its debut in Revised Edition. It became widely adopted in the MTG community, and was later adopted by multiple card games, including yu-gi-oh.
    another wildly adopted term for many card games it Tutor, named for the card Demonic Tutor from MTG. However, this is used less often in yu-gi-oh, as they have adopted the terms ROTA,(for a specific monster type,attribute, or archetype) or search/searcher for more generic searching needs.

    "Uh nuh-gate?" -> is a phrase said when a player activates an effect that 'negates' another cards effect. Typically said/asked in the form of a question to imply that the opposing player may or may not have a response to the effect that causes the negation. (Ex: Player 1 has a Borreload Savage Dragon with 2 Borrel Counters and Player 2 activates Pot of Greed. Player 1 then chains Borreload Savage Dragon's to remove 1 Borrel counter to activate its effect to negate the effect Pot of Greed of drawing 2 cards. Player 1 then asks, "Uh, nuh-gate?")

    Another term in the card game is “recipe”, which is a term used to describe all cards in your Main and Extra Decks (and occasionally the Side Deck, though typically that isn’t the case since the Side Deck only contains cards that you switch out with Main/Extra cards in Matches).
    The Side Deck is, as just explained, a combination of up to 15 cards that you can switch with cards in your Main and Extra Decks. Note I said “switch”, not add. I’m fairly certain you can’t add or subtract the respective card totals of your Main, Extra, and Side, only substitute in an appropriate manner.
    Match refers to when two people duel each other multiple times in a row, typically in a 2-out-of-3 setting. This isn’t to be confused with “Mirror Match” (which you’ve already explained), but as these are typically done 2-out-of-3 it doesn’t really matter.
