Celia “Sally” Gonzales, grandmother of Uvlade Shooter, fighting stigma of relation to shooter

  • As the grandmother of the Uvalde school shooter recovers in the hospital from a gunshot wound to the face, her family continues to fight the stigma they say has led to a muted showing of support over the past month.
From comments on social media to the comparatively low amount of money raised on her GoFundMe page, they feel a cloud hangs over Celia “Sally” Gonzales, 66, due to the fact the shooter was her grandson.
"We don't want to be known as the family of a shooter," says Gonzales's granddaughter Shelby Salazar. "We are the family of a victim. Of a survivor. She survived."
Gonzales was inside her Uvalde home the morning of May 24 when her grandson Salvador Ramos, 18, shot her in the face and stole her truck. While Gonzales clung to life, Ramos drove to nearby Robb Elementary School and carried out the deadliest school shooting in Texas history.
"She was the first victim, left for dead in her home in a pool of her own blood," Salazar says. "She could not get up. She struggled to get to that door and managed by the grace of God to walk across the street and let the neighbors know what happened."
Emergency crews flew Gonzales to University Hospital, where she has been recovering ever since. "He shot her in the face, so all of this was blown," Salazar says, pointing to her lower jaw on the side of her face. "He severed the main artery that pumps blood from her heart to her brain."
Her injuries were so severe that there was no guarantee she'd make it past the first few days. "The doctors stated they didn't even know how she was alive," her granddaughter says. "She was a miracle."
Last week marked Gonzales's ninth surgery. With several more procedures still to go, her mouth is wired shut. She can't talk. She can't eat. But she is alert. "She's able to understand everybody, she's able to write and tell you what she wants to tell you."
And yet, Salazar can sense there's a stigma preventing parts of the public from viewing her grandmother the same way they do the other victims of the Uvalde shooter.

The mom said he had his reason, all I could think was "BITCH!!!" What do you mean he had his reasons this is what it gonna say to what just happened and the grandfather is just saying idk to everything when he lived with him bc the mom wasn't doing her job. But if they don't get the same energy then I really hope this whole situation gets her clean off drugs and I hope it shakes the grandfather up enough to start admitting to what he knows. The shooter had all these weapons in his room the first room in the house u have to walk by when u first walk n the house and that he didn't know the shooter dropped out of school over a year ago. I know I'm not the only one looking at the grandfather and mom side ways the grandfather more bc he ended up living with him after the mom. It’s not about blaming, it’s about finding cause and effect. This young man did not turn out the way he did by himself. He was raised to be how he was by certain people, who were also raised by others. It’s about seeing the chain of behavior so we can interrupt it and stop these problems from burgeoning. The grandmother raised one of his parents. What kind of job did she do? She was also raised by others - what kind of job did *they* do? It’s an intergenerational cycle, unless we break it.

The grandmother was a joint on the account because maybe when the account was opened he was still a minor and needed an adult on the account. I’m still on my kids accounts today as a joint because they were minors when I established the accounts. Just because I’m a joint, I don’t look at their accounts because they are adults now. My kids buy stuff from Amazon all the time and send it to my house because they know someone is always home. The grandmother was a joint probably just by default because of his age. She probably didn’t pay attention to his activities on his account. A point someone else made in the comments…maybe she was afraid of her grandson. Maybe he treated her bad when the grandfather wasn’t home. No one knows what this grandmother went through while living with her grandson. Another thing…chances of the grandmother having Facebook is probably zero.
