  • On this episode of StarTalk Radio, your personal astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson is back alongside comic co-host Chuck Nice to answer fan-submitted questions on a variety of topics that take us across the universe and into the unknown. You’ll find out why the universe will ultimately die “not with a bang, but with a whimper. And not in fire, but in ice.” Explore the relationship between time and space as we ponder the fabric of spacetime. You’ll even hear about the possibilities of a universe inside of another universe.
    Discover more about the concept of the holographic universe. We investigate electron microscopes and why they let us see more than light-based microscopes. You’ll also learn why matter is waves and particles. You’ll find out more about moving around in zero gravity and how you could propel a wheelchair while floating in space.
    Explore Hawking radiation. You’ll learn more about gravitational redshifts. We calculate the impact of merging black holes. We also discuss time dilation: do electromagnetic signals get warped by time dilation? Neil explains the Fermi paradox and “The Great Filter.” We ponder if the urge to explore the universe is the same urge that might destroy us.
    We try and work out a design that would make solar panels and lasers work together for wireless energy transfer. Get details why the future imagined by the 1950s-60s has been reshaped by the accessibility of information. All that, plus, Neil advocates for common core math and the importance of asking the right questions.
    This episode originally aired on March 1, 2019.

      as a chemistry teacher with extensive scientific background - there are no "answers" in science unless you understand how to get one. An answer is meaningless if you don't understand how to get there and how to evaluate its reliability. Just regurgitating information is useless unless you know how to arrive at the results and could replicate it yourself.

    I watched a CZcams video called; "Tour of the International Space Station" and the Astronaut Lady in the video was showing how they have to exercise every day, to maintain bone density and muscle mass in zero-G, but the exercise equipment isn't actually attached to the Space Station itself because of the risk that that movement could have the unintentional effect of altering the orbital velocity.
    The pressure they're exerting on the exercise equipment could transfer through the walls and begin affecting the motion trajectory and speed of the Station itself, so it's free floating, and just lashed to the interior walls with seatbelt straps.
    There's things that seem obvious like "every way is up," or the way her hair was sticking up in all directions all wild lol but I'd never even given it a moment's thought what too severe a movement or a repetitious inertia acting against the inside of the Station could do until she explained it in that video.
    The video has fewer than 20,000 views in about two years it's been up.
    When there's evidence showing that people value science as much as Kardashians or "Pew Die Pie" or whatever my faith in humanity will be restored.
    Edit; Hahaha "Neil deGrasse Tyson attacks a man in a New York City alley for a stack of papers. Details at 11." 😂😂

      TWSTF 8 I hear what your saying about losing faith and I agree. But don’t lose too much. We are doing better than you think. I live for science videos. I spend hours a day watching them everyday so Believe me when I tell you that some of the most seemingly boring dry science and space videos have millions of views. I see so many of these videos that have way more views than you think and it slightly restores my hope. With people like Carl Sagan, Bill Nye, Neil Degrasse Tyson, Michio Kaku, Michelle Thaller, and Brian Greene, science is becoming fun. These people are make science a household name and they make it fun. They are inspiring generations and I think it’s working

    I’m glad you’ve tackled the Common Core Mathematics question. As a mathematician, I’m a big fan of Common Core and helping students figure out how to think and learn mathematics without learning pure rote and algorithms without understanding. Yes, there have been problems since it’s harder for teachers who didn’t learn mathematics this way to then turn around and teach it correctly. However, I’ve observed that this is changing and even teachers are learning mathematics much better. Change is hard, but if we do it right, we’re going to have a much larger group of students in the future that are so much better prepared for working in STEM fields, and it is my hope that this will cause us as a society to begin to look at and tackled innumeracy the same way we have tackled illiteracy. *crosses fingers*

    All that fuss about Chuck's (and many other people around the world) reading trouble is not his own shortcoming but that of the 'Roman Script' that is used to write English and most European languages.
    In many other scripts (any of the Indian scripts for example) of the world, there is no way of mispronouncing the written word.
    It needs few more symbols but once you have learnt them, you do not need to remember any spelling at all!
    In Hindi for example (Which uses the 'Devanagari' script), there can be no game as 'The Spelling Bee' or no need of a 'spell checker'. The script is totally explanatory.

    Love your comment on information evolution vs the expectations of energy control back in the days. We still fantasize about travelling effortlessly on great distances to venture the cosmos. Maybe the comparison won't stop there: Maybe we'll finally find satisfaction by "only knowing" what's out there and experience it here on various form of communication systems (VR and so on...). Maybe it's just another path toward exploration...

    The "dig a hole" analogy slipped in a Creator, unnoticed :) Because there's someone digging the hole in that analogy.

    • @ABaumstumpf
      @ABaumstumpf Před 4 lety

      No, not really. It is an analogy and the inclusion of a person doing the work is intentional.
      On the other hand it has been shown already that particle-antiparticle pairs do form on their own constantly and everywhere.

    • @maartendas1358
      @maartendas1358 Před 4 lety

      @@ABaumstumpf Thanks for your reply. I understand it is intentional, but it does not help me grasp the concept of how particles and antiparticle pairs can form on their own. Somehow it seems that to make this clear, the analogy needs to make use of an outside force. And I'm okay with that :) But if a better analogy comes along: also great! In the meantime, this whole thing remains kind of mysterious, which I also like :)

    • @ABaumstumpf
      @ABaumstumpf Před 4 lety

      @@maartendas1358 Well, particle physics and specially all the quantum stuff is just very strange and ahrd to grasb. But basically, as Neil mentioned, as long as particles form in a way as to not violate any laws of conservation they will do so - and we can obsever that this happens. Partilce-antiparticle pairs form all the time, one being regular, one antimatter, with opposite mass, charge and momentum.
      Where there si energy there are fluctuations, where there are fluctuations virtual particles or (anti)matter pairs can form.
      You could go to your local library or university to learn the basics of QuantumMechanics.

      @@ABaumstumpf Thanks! I am learning here and there, mostly via Neil's videos. Quantum physics sure is strange and I can be in awe of the beauty of that strangeness. Thanks for sharing your insight and comments :) I love that phrase: Where there is energy, there is fluctuation.

    If you dig a hole, you can make a mountain but you’ve had the soil to do that in the first place. You cannot dig a hole and make a mountain out of air.
    So the energy and particles is not exactly same. Particles can annihilate each other because of the way they vibrate, just like waves can cancel each other in water.
    The field remains and the energy gets released free
    Bcz particles are just the vibration of the fields and the energy is what does the vibration
    To get all that start you need a field and energy. Once you have that you can make any combinations of vibrations happening and that creates matter.
    So nothing is just not really empty space, it’s just absence of energy.
    The biggest question where did the energy came from?
    We know it’s possible for particles to cancel each other but we also know that energy doesn’t disappear, it’s been there from the moment of Big Bang and it’s going to be there always.
    Whatever we know is not enough to understand what are fields made of and what is energy and it’s original source.
