Why Neil deGrasse Tyson and Emily Rice Think You Should Pay Attention to Low-Mass Stars
Could we find life around low-mass stars? Neil deGrasse Tyson and comedian Chuck Nice find out why life might be more likely around low-mass stars, what makes brown dwarfs, galactic archeology, and more with astronomer Emily Rice.
Where did the name “brown dwarf” come from? Learn about when brown dwarfs were first discovered and astronomer Jill Tarter’s research on them. We discuss star classification, why the letters are so out of order, and how brown dwarfs are relevant to the field of exoplanets. What is the difference between a brown dwarf and a low-mass star? Find out what the cutoff is for thermonuclear fusion and how deuterium can help low-mass stars fuse a little.
What is the difference between a brown dwarf and a hot Jupiter? Do we know how brown dwarfs are formed? What is the largest dwarf star ever discovered? Learn about age-mass degeneracy and how low-mass brown dwarfs could actually be old high-mass brown dwarfs. Discover the Sun’s tachocline and how the brown dwarve’s magnetic field may operate differently.
What happens when two brown dwarfs collide? What the heck is a blue straggler? Find out about the lifespan of brown dwarfs, galactic archeology, and metallicity. How do you tell the age of different low-mass stars? What would it take to capture a direct image of an exoplanet? We discuss the Trappist-1 System, the Goldilocks zone, and good candidates for Earth-like planets. Plus, a cosmic perspective on the importance of space exploration.

I would say the knot example is not a great one. I have a different perspective of knot. When you represent a knot in 2D, they wouldn't understand the complication of a knot and how to resolve it. They would simply see that nothing is tangled and say that they are just lines going across. Similarly, that would be something on four dimension which is complicated for them, but we as a three-dimensional creature wouldn't understand the complication and see it as simple thing

Climate change is bs. Like smoking. How many years will a person at risk of too late to quit? Earth is so big how you measure gas? How many years of measuring earth until we can see a pattern? Let say 1000 years measurement, 500 years measurement. Is this long enough time to measure and see the earth weather? Food problem: everything come from a distributor. So everyone should order in advance so the distributor know how much of whatever is needed in certain area of a city.

If we were the one on our way to being the next to simulate the probability decreases in the knowledge that the simulators would prefer to simulate a society that can simulate vs the society that needs another 200 years of technological development to simulate, if the simulators wanted us to have the ability to simulate, they wouldnt make us so that they have to wait for us to aquire the ability to simulate.

Im not smart but i like to think of black holes as bubbles that suck in matter till the point till there they cany suck in ant more matter, like how a fire cant burn with out oxygen... thats my view on black holes live with in black holes till they eat each other but if everything collected could it be part of a super black hole that grows as every inner black hole dies?? so we live in a black hole just as black holes live with in us and if they dont suck in then they will die being the end if the big bang and help continue the end of life of the bigger black hole we live in.

Gotta disagree with that logic. It’s whatever one is familiar with. As a Canadian who travels to the US often, I can relate to both scales. Celsius makes more sense with water freezing at zero and boiling at 100. Weather is just right at 23 C to 26C. Having said that, my British Columbia drivers license states my height and weight in cm and kg, but I still say I’m 6 feet and 190 lbs. As I said, it’s what one is familiar with.

One of those sessions in which Mr. Tyson gets corrected very accurately on top of science. Not only super educational - as ALWAYS - but sheds more light on a very important, if not super critical and essential, point: psychology of true scientists! They have NO PROBLEM AT ALL to discuss matters and update themselves and get corrected!!! That's how we learn, improve, and grow! Otherwise, we just age! (That has its own categorization: 0 down to "-Infinity").

You said a theory is what gave us the black hole, therefore you don’t even know if it really exists. Why would we (as humans) waste our time studying something that probably doesn’t even exist? This is what makes it a system of scientific belief, much like religion. There’s no true knowledge involved in his studies, just theories and deception.
