Alien Worlds and Extremophiles with Neil deGrasse Tyson & Kennda Lynch - Cosmic Queries

- What will life be like on other planets? On this episode, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice explore the origins of life on alien planets and extremophiles right here on Earth with astrobiologist Kennda Lynch.
We dive into the salty acidic waters of the Dallol in the Danakil Depression and Kennda’s appearance in Netflix’s Alien Worlds. How is it that life can live in these extreme conditions? Find out about extremophiles. How does one even become an astrobiologist? Kennda walks us through all the hats she wears in her field and her experience growing stuff in space. Would Matt Damon really have been able to grow potatoes on Mars and life? What is regolith?
Next, we start our Cosmic Queries: What is Kennda’s favorite extremophile? Are we biased for our own conditions for life? Could there be life the size of planets or quantum lifeforms? How do we think about life as we don’t know it? Could life come from a liquid other than water? Is it possible that biology is the same across the universe? What are the requirements for life? Could we find life in our own solar system? We break down planetary protection rules and what science we would like to explore Enceladus.
What’s the difference between exobiology and astrobiology? What is the Allan Hills rock? We discuss meteorites and what we learn from them. Could microbes take over the whole planet? Find out why larger lifeforms will likely continue to prevail on Earth. Does all life need heat from the sun? Discover how astrobiologists are reimagining life on other planets. All that, plus, are there bugs that eat rocks somewhere?

How long until we discover life elsewhere in the universe?
Perhaps we've already come across it and just haven't realized it yet.
As soon as we get to Titan!!
How long until other life in the universe discovers us?
I'll defer to Seth Shostak and guess within 20 years. Is he mocking the fusion research with that? 😄

Man, she needs to be on regularly . I love her knowledge
That would be cool
Yes, I enjoy her enthusiasm and delivery of knowledge.
She's great, isn't she?
She's magnificent.
@@StarTalk yes she is. Thanks for replying Dr. Tyson
Kennda is so fun! I love her energy and that she's able to impart her knowledge but also laugh- both at herself and with others!
Yeh, what a great episode ... maybe saga is more appropriate 🤔🤓🤪😁🏆🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🤓🍿🍿🤓🇭🇲🏏🦘💯🤣🕺🙏🏌️🤾
Agreed. This is by far my favorite Star Talk episode of all time. These three had such great chemistry, and I was genuinely interested in each question mostly because of the quality of the answer(s). And as you said, to Kennda's credit, she's incredibly passionate, intelligent, and well spoken. Also, I do believe she complimented and added to Neil's already vast knowledge.
I'm having a pretty bad year, and maybe even a worse day (don't worry, all hard things can lead to good if one could have enough patience), and this Star Talk actually helped a lot. I'm thankful.
I just couldn't agree with you more...this is the absolute best of the CZcamss, when smart funny folks get together & we get to enjoy the amazing chemistry, pun intended. She's got the best laugh...personally, I love nothing more than making my lovely wife laugh, so Kennda's laugh alone created a great mood for the two men to feel comfortable & appreciated, thus opening them up to give their all, & then Kennda's extreme competence just leaped off the screen...I'm going to see if she's been in other videos...freaking loved this!!
the chemistry between them is off the charts its heartwarming to watch, and really made my day. Thank you.
True. Some times Neil and Chunks would start to joke and the third person would look like the conversation goes over their heads (or just not care at all), but not her. She actually participates and even some times pushes them more. And she's also brilliant. A top quality guest.
Yes, she was divine but everyone was kicking it today 🤣😂😮💯🦘🏏🇭🇲🤓🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🏆🍿🏆🍿🍿🍿🍿🏆🤪😁🤔😜😍
I love how much laughter happens on Cosmic Queries. It's so wonderful to hear scientists having such a good time talking about their favourite subjects.
that’s how you know that they truly love what they do!! so cool! lord nice is desperately trying to keep up, but hanging tough!! smart man surrounded by some of the greatest minds of this generation!
Great show guys. Kendra fit right in with the wackadoodles. Kendra sure has a wide field of knowledge. Good guest Neil.
Best guest! Amazingly smart and an absolute scientific beast with all those degrees...
This is one of my all time favorite episodes!!! Everyone is having such a get time educating and entertaining!!! WE NEED MORE KENNDA!!!!
Keenda needs to come back on! She is AWESOME!!
I love kennda! I could listen to her explain astrobioligy all day, every day! 🌞
Love it! Right up my alley as a PhD candidate studying ancient bacterial metabolism. Hoping to dive further into extremophile studies as an analog to life on other cosmic bodies! Thanks for the good content!
Sounds like this one was made for you! Glad you could enjoy it :)
Nice, I really hope you can find PhD place that is right for you. I too am looking for one and I find it really nerve-racking.
Yes it can be difficult. I chose a program at UCLA largely based off the type of research being done and the diversity of research topics in my umbrella program. Good luck!

Very intelligent sista!! Glad Dr Tyson brings us to the spot light!!! 😎👍🏿
She is awesomeness smart.. being a scientist.. no longer in a lab.. I loved her enjoyment in the field of her experience..
I really enjoyed this one. I'm so glad to see and hear of super smart women in the sciences. I am not smart at all but do love listening to people who are. Thank you.
You love listening to them because you are smart 🤓
Kennda is an inspiration to us all to follow your dreams and become somebody that makes the world a better place. She fits right in with this group.
I love these 3 super intelligent people, Chuck has the command of comedy way beyond any comedian. Neal has an overall knowledge of science that in almost unbelievable, and can explain it to anyone. All 3 are mind blowing. This is my favourite program by far.
Thank you Neil & Chuck, both of you are very appreciated.
2 of my favorite American Doctors and 1 Lord/ Commedian. Outstanding EDUCATIONAL episode as anticipated. Brooklyn NY LOVES STARTALK 💘 ❤ 💕

I love the small group of scientists, like Kennda who pull together seemingly different subjects together like this. I love it!!!
Forget _scientists_ who _look_ like her. We need more _people _*_like_* her. Crazy smart, crazy motivated. If more of us were like that, it would be an amazing world.
Exactly.
Judge me not by the color of my skin but by the content of my character.
Forget about looks man.
For that to happen at huge scales we have to start to value science as much as we value celebrities and sport players. Our advance as a society depends on science and here we are playing millions to nimrods playing balls.
@@jacoblinares2403 "I don't think we can ignore race" - MLK
@@jacoblinares2403 Finally, let me give you the full quote that you took out of context: "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." We are clearly not there yet, so long as people continue to have a problem associating positive things with being black. We will never get there if we keep trying to tell black people to shut up every time they are proud of being black.
EVERYONE needs heroes! Even a 13 1/2 year old girl who made the comment in a question. As a 52 year old white man and native Texan, her comment didn't make me cringe. I have so many 'heroes' that 'look like me' , I can take it for granted that it's 'no big deal'. She doesn't! Why does it hurt your ego that a 13 1/2 year old girl chooses the heroes that she chooses? Who should they be and how should she qualify them in your infinite wisdom? BTW, the MLK 'content of your character' quote is taken out of context by almost everyone on this thread save one.
Always so entertaining and informative. Well done!! And bring kendra back this one went too quickly! ❤
She needs to be on more for sure it’s hard to find someone who has this much humor with them together. It’ll be me Chuck and Neil laughing most of the time
This is a fantastic guest. I hope you have her on Star Talk often.
This was a great episode. I hope to see Dr. Lynch again.
This is the only channel i can for a full hour without falling asleep and being incredibly attentive...dunno why but I'm looking up here in kenya too. Thanks Star talk
Watching this first thing on a grey misty Scottish Monday morning and thanking you all for brightening up the week ahead.
Incredibly informative AND entertaining! I can't remember when was the last time I laughed out loud listening to scientists discussing such abstract ideas!
Glad you could enjoy!
What an amazing trio, these 3 are a perfect match, entertaining and knowledgeable.
LOVE this episode. Kennda's brilliant.
I like the new look of your podcast. Made me save 3 more watch!🌎
My daughter and I were just talking about tardigrades today. We were imagining little tardigrade astronauts 🤗
Tardigrade? Thats what the doctor said I was to my mommy.
I’m super pumped about this topic
Love this panel-perfect chemistry and amazing knowledge, so fun!
This has been one of my absolute favorites
The best science channel on CZcams. You bring on the best guests. And Neil plays the ignorant fool, with the BEST questions every time. Superb content for those that are interested in the next level.
Nothing scientific about a 2nd law of thermodynamics violating sky vacuum.
@@J2theK How do you know that energy is not potentially spread across multiple dimensions? How do you know better? Mr Clever Clogs :D
Best CZcams channel ever!
This for sure is one, if not THE funniest Cosmic Queries, I've ever seen :-) Hi from Switzerland. Thanks for this and all the shows. I love it.
Chuck was on fire on this one
I’m addicted to these! ❤️❤️
An addiction that might actually be good for you!

This woman just made me rethink everything I thought I knew about Rockford Illinois.
Kenda is so engaging. This is wonderful. I had to listen to it one more time. I'm going to check out the Netflix series as well
Great episode! Keenda is awesome! I really enjoyed how much you three enjoyed the show, the laughing was nonstop :)
Quick non-Astro-biology-related question: Does anyone know-- or Chuck can you tell me??--- what the artwork is in Chuck's background--- the black and white heart? Really like it 👍
Seems like an amazing sweet woman. And what an infectious laugh. What an awesome startalk episode this was😍
@@dragonworkx Thank You! :) Appreciate you taking the time to reply
What a great episode!! Life on Enceladus 😊
Def on my top 3 guest here!!
Such a smart lady! I love it!
It’s such a pleasure listening to the brilliant Dr.Kennda Lynch.
I love all the guests he has on this show! I learn more all the time!
Super impressive Ms. Lynch !!
Gonna save this for my long flight.
Great episode, I commend Neil for staying on topic so well with this one. Great episode!!
yeah she's a cool scientist and a good sense of humor
“Life is not comfortable unless it’s room temperature” 😂😂😂
Thanks for everything guys, for the laughters and for the teachings, love you 😘
Always a good time watching a Star Talk video. I could watch other channels that talk about space and science, but I hardly do because StarTalk has entertainment/comedy which helps make learning fun. Thank you for making it fun and entertaining!
Please have Kennda back on again, she's delightful!
Great episode.. Astrobiology is in my opinion new doorway to evolutionary life sciences... Btw Chuck is one I can relate to more among the three..... And it's just great that he is in this show
One of the best guests Ive seen on here. It's nice when the guests bring the knowledge, but also have a sense of humor
Love this episode! Would like to see her again!
Fascinating topics with another world of interest!! I enjoyed your discussion thanks again Neal, Chuck and Kennda !!
Astrobiology is hands down my dream job
Reach for the stars!
A lot of lady scientists getting the spotlight lately. All the ones I've seen are very intelligent and knowledgeable. Very refreshing and inspirational.
Um, why wouldn't they be intelligent? They're scientists.
@@denisenj7648 Being a scientist doesn't necessarily make one smart. But in this case I was just admiring these ladies intelligence. I also admire their rationality and sense of humor.
Its always so inspirational to listen to such scientifically literate people. It makes me have hope that human destiny will have a least a small chance of being led by knowledge and wisdom, as opposed to greed and ignorance.
Two sides of the same coin..
One of the best shows I’ve seen! Congrats
this is my fav episode so far
As others have said. She should be a regular. She fits so well and has lots of great knowledge.
This is probably my favorite episode 💪🏾
Thanks!
Thank you for the SuperThanks!
Great episode, I love this topic.
Thank you Lord Chuck Nice for bringing up Star Trek: Discovery and the space-tardigrades! #FlyMycelium!
Chuck looks so focus and serious listening when someone’s explaining the topic
Oh man! So much to learn!
She has a great sense of humor! I think she’s the first Star Talk guest, that’s so intelligent and well educated that can laugh at Chuck’s jokes (those that are funny); she’s so good humored.
Had to go watch alien worlds just because kennda was so personable and knowledgeable. Could listen to her all day. Clearly loves her field
gosh i love kennda. could listen to her going on for hours. such a wonderful person ♥
Fabulous guest!!! Make her a regular!!! ❤
Such an excellent and informative episode!
She's a whole vibe. Love it. You make a good trio.
great episode & guest as usual!!💪💪💪
Dr Lynch is wonderful! Please have her on again!
I'm not nearly as smart as you folks, but I really enjoy listening to your talks. Thank You!
Same here, Steve. 🙂
Educating people.👍
Awesome job kennda!
NEIL, YOU ARE SUCH AN INSPIRATION, you are literally the reason I’m so into science and history. Love you like a brother ‼️❤️
I love kenda’s energy! She is fun to listen to.
by far my favorite show you guys /girls are the best
Excellent guest! She’s captivating and a good sport.
This chapter was sincerely brilliant. Thank you for this amazing information.
World's at war and Neil's talking about space worms. Love it
That’s why we’re here.
Since kennda said she did not want to age herself I just wanted to say that for a lady in her mid-40s(I'm guessing by her accomplishments) that she looks very young, with a joyful childlike face. She's not only brilliant but actually has a personality with a sense of humor too. This made for a very enjoyable episode.
Agreed 💯
I do love watching/listening to startslk
I love her!!! She's so fun!
Great episode!
Enjoyed her knowledge... great episode. Interesting to know about the organisms that live in reactors.

Awesome show !!!!
lovely episode. Very interesting topic, with a great guest who is as articulate and entertaining to watch, as she is knowledgeable.
Please keep bringing on more scientist superstars to make science more accessible to the masses :)
however....the clown duo is very distracting! chuck for sure, brainless. but neil.....so disappointing!!
