Cleaning and deodorizing a 2008 f250 super duty evaporator

- tired of smelling that nasty smell in my own personal truck so I finally decided to take the time and do something about it. Obviously this isn't a recommended method by any dealership or any manufacturer but this is what I can come up with since there is no logical or reasonable way to access the evaporator coil for the AC system to clean it properly.
All you have to do to get into the evap coil area is go under near the psgr footwell.Pull the fan out in the blower well an walla.Don’t use water til you have blown the coils clean.Because that dirt will turn into mud.Easy to pull out fan.Before you do this don’t run your ac for a while because you don’t want the coils to be all wet.First step to removing fan is to squeeze the tang on the piece outside of fan area.Then to remove fan itself turn it clockwise and it will come out.Then you will have access to evaporator coil.Use a blower tube on the coils but don’t hit the coils.Then you can use a small vacuum tube to go inside evaporator area to suck out all that dirt and hair.You can make your own air cabin filter that goes under the air intake under the wiper blade mechanism on passenger side.
Go to ace and get rubber grommet plugs for your holes.. Easy and can be removed to do it again if need be
Here's an idea you can use when you said about a small sprayer. Get a pump up sprayer that use use for insecticide or weeds and fill that with hot water. the wand should be able to go through the hole you made earlier , if not enlarge the hole further to get the wand through and the semi fine spray should be enough to wash out the grime off the evaporator.
Thanks man great video. Tried this the other day. Same as mine lots of dirt and dog hair 😔. But was the same on the air flow but recirculate big change on the flow. So a beer and a rye and a long thought. I found the inlet in behind the computer and the screen was solid oil dirt and grease. Wish I could post a picture. Thanks again 🥃🥃
Drill the holes the same size as the plugs used for bass boat live wells

Definitely risky. But for me pulling the entire dash and HVAC plenum is a task of time I'm not interested in.

Any reason you didnt just drill a hole from the front side through the glove box hole?
That side is the downstream exit surface. Normally everything solid collets upstream where the unconditioned air enters the evaporator.
I got that stinky sock smell in my 08 Ford Truck Cab,too.

Were you having ac blow volume problems too?I saw in one video why you wouldn’t use water to spray in evap core because if there is dirt on and on the bottom of the coil you could turn that dirt into mud and it wouldn’t get through the outlet tube
No volume problem. I recently did this procedure again and after doing what I did in the video I used a product called biofresh, it's like water. Did get some debris to come down off the evaporator but still not having any drainage issues. I woul suspect people different than me that drive a lot of dirt roads, farming communities they would have more of a drain issue from mud than I would.
@@bignastyhvac8132 did you catch my replay for the next time you need to clean those coils?No holes drilled just easily remove the blower fan and you can look up into the evaporator coil chamber.It’s simple and inexpensive
@@bignastyhvac8132 I appreciate your video on cleaning the coil and my suggestions for an easier way wasn’t trying to upstage you or disrespect your creativity and craftyness.I saw a Ford Technician show how to do that without removing the whole dash or drilling holes
Could you access the coil by taking the blower motor out and going through that way? Also, isn't there a drain in the "box". Perhaps a garden sprayer with water to rinse after washing??? Anyway, thanks for showing us your method.
Not in this truck. unfortunately the blower assembly is about a foot-and-a-half to the right of the evaporator and pulling it out doesn't give you any access at it's really low at the passenger foot panel.
Is it not possible to remove the cover from the evaporator box and clean down through the top? Ours is a 2013 SD Power Stroke. Maybe configured differently?
No unfortunately.
To actually get to the top of the evap core you have to remove the whole dash

Immediately after. Do you think you got the cleaner on the coil surface? If you feel like you have a stubborn odor buy some biofresh cd. I had to use it on my friends f250 that was really bad. It's a product we use on Central air conditioning coils in homes. You'll have to get creative to apply it but it works.
I used 2 cans and it did help when on the recirculation button. But I still had a smell when I turned that off and also when I tried heat through the vents on top and also just heat coming out the regular vents
@@JCPlatinum239 I would try the biofresh CD then. You can spray it in the cowl intake on the exterior below the windshield. that will help treat the fan if the fan is dirty if you don't feel like taking it out and after that figure out a way to spray it into the holes you drilled. Sounds like you got a stubborn one.
So through the whole with the camera I'm using, I noticed some Mold buildup on there. Would you recommend to keep cleaning?
@@JCPlatinum239 if you can reach it with one of those brushes yes. Otherwise the biofresh will kill it. Sounds like yours might have to be cleaned every 2 to 3 years if it's that bad.
Is there a reason not to go up the drain line?
Can't get a brush up the drain line if you need to physically clean the evaporator. You can try just adding foam through the drain but it's a pretty big cavity. It's probably not going fill up if you want to treat the entire surface.
Did this actually take out the smell?
It did. But some people have it worse than I did at which point using Biofresh CD is something that should be used after the cleaning is done. And depending on how dirty and how clean the evaporator can be made sometimes doing it every 2 to 4 years is necessary.

2011 F350 smells like mildew or mold. For 15 minutes when the heater gets cranked on.. Nasty AF

Two places. The fresh air Cowell below the windshield wipers if it's set to fresh air. Otherwise if on recirculation on the floor at the forward foot rest, driver right passenger left.
Just cut a access panel out the side

Air nozzle it ...not with crazy high PSI but it might help loosen the shit up a bit then rinse it.. Maybe a little drain hole on the bottom of the box..
May be worth a shot. But for now my problem is gone. No more stench.
