      Of course it doesn’t, but Pixar is internationally known as one of the biggest studios for children’s animation. Like, when Disney wanted to start doing television animation, they didn’t even label it as Walt Disney Animation, it turned into Disney Toon Studios. Or, when they wanted to do nature projects it’s DisneyNature, because they’re conveying to the audience that, yes, we are putting our quality stamp on this piece of media, but it may not align with what you would expect from our biggest studio. Pixar, I think, is at that point where they need to subdivide if they’re going to play around with their product.

Although, I am curious where this renowned child psychologist went to if Joe was able to randomly grab a name tag and never get called out as stealing it...

    • @DreamwithintheHeart
      @DreamwithintheHeart Před 3 lety +3

      @@TheFangirlWatches Indeed. I honestly wonder, since the count was off, it booted the child psychologist off the mentor path to be chosen and he never appeared and he went to the great beyond. I also wonder if, he would have been able to a least talk to 22,and see deeper and might have connected with them, since in their hall way their memories they were shown to be doing alot of nature stuff and hanging out with family.
      Also I found the name thing really funny. It's was mostly a play on words and I personally didn't notice it until I was discussing the movie with my husband and I was talking in mid sentence, that 22 needed to just meet an "average Joe" and it clicked for me. Same with 22's name. That fact that 22 needs to live, in order to get their spark, which would have been impossible to begin with, puts 22 in a Catch 22.

      For me, there’s showing emotional range, like Hiro coping with the death of his brother, and then there’s just punches in the gut that often don’t amount to much and it’s a story reaching for emotions that are undeserved. Soul really doesn’t get to the point of trying to force sad emotions out of you, but they are definitely going to give kids an existential crisis if they’re not careful - I got one of those at about age 5 and that caused lifelong panic attacks and has severely impacted my life negatively, so I wish there was more care to handle these kinds of stories in films.

    I thought Soul had an amazing message to this movie and I’m so sad that more people didn’t like it. A lot of people also seem to not like or understand 22… As an autistic individual myself, I heavily relate to 22’s experience. She hasn’t just given up on going to Earth but she’s scared of it as well. She is comfortable in the great before, with her routine and what is familiar to her, as it is what and all she knows. She can’t relate to anyone or anything with others there so how could she on Earth?
    When she lands in Joe’s body, she is overwhelmed by New York, her senses have been violated, (light, sound, smells, people being too close to her) she is terrified and she doesn’t understand what’s going on in the world around her. However, she slowly starts finding things that she loves and appreciates. Things she experiences and feels that the people around her take for granted. This is a very common autistic experience because of sensory sensitivities and struggling to communicate or reading social rules and undertones. Often overwhelmed by the world, we find joy in things that other people will find mundane, or niche.
    22 also doesn’t understand social cues or why people do/say the things they do. Like Connie, when she wants to give up playing trombone but is actually just struggling within herself because of her love for her trombone. 22 can’t see or understand that in the moment. She’s also super blunt and straight to the point which proves to be awkward at times, or even straight up offensive, but also appreciated too, like when she gets a haircut in Joe’s body.
    Autistic people constantly face rejection for who we are, how we feel, people not understanding our experience and writing us off as cold and emotionless when/if we can’t read a room. If we can’t love things like how other people do. It can be a very sad and lonely world, and it’s easy to feel like you are not good enough, to not reach out and try because you’re so used to being treated and viewed a certain way.
    And if you’re not that autistic person who is really good/talented at a special interest (being good at math, super smart in something or have amazing memory) then you’re kinda… Written off, at least in my experience. Because people really are obsessed with making their passions, their work, their entire life. So if you aren’t doing the same thing… It’s very easy to feel like you are not enough. And that’s how 22 ends up feeling near the end of the movie. She feels worthless.
    So I love the message of this movie. It gives me a lot of hope. Even if I never find my thing, my spark, the thing that I’m good at, or relate to people like how I want, we all deserve to live and be happy no matter what. That life is still worth living, even if you have a different neurotype or feel differently from everyone else. ♡

I'm a 16 year old who was really into art and and animation to the point where I felt like that was my entire life "I mean if I can't make the next Avatar last air bender what's even the point of drawing". At first I really didn't think I would like soul because a trailer got released in my country revealing the body swap plot but I knew the animation would be good and I really wanted to see more of those semi 2D creatures. So I sat dow and watched the movie on my computer yesterday and what do you know... I didn't like it.. but I kept waiting and at the moment I realized Joe wasn't in the zone while playing his dream job, my eyes started to tear up. And when playing while thinking about 22 got him into the zone, I started thinking about my own dreams and thought "am I really a lesser person if I don't achieve this?". Safe to say I was basically a waterfall for the rest of the movie. I will still keep drawing and I will stille keep going for that dream but i won't let it take over my life. Just do what feels good. not every one is meant to settle. If you want to draw, just draw. We have bean trained to live our life a certain way. But who decided this? When was those decided? Was everyone heard in that meeting?? No. Don't think that you are lesser than anyone if you can't do something the way they do it. You do you! My husband’s theory on the cat is that cats are born with 9 lives(souls) living in them at the same time. Also he figured maybe that’s why they go crazy in the middle of the night, the different souls trying to control the body(this theory was shared with me around 3 AM when our cats were ripping through the house).

    I am curious about who Joe was talking to on his cell phone before he died. He did not seem to have any or many close friends, so who did he call? I think you are right about Pixar needing to figure out their audience especially when the writers of Frozen 2 had to rewrite so much to fit a child's perspective, because their test audience included children as young as 5. I know Frozen is not Pixar, but after watching the cut scenes, it looked like the movie could have been so much better. If Frozen had to do it, then Pixar should too😅

    • @BuizelCream
      @BuizelCream Před 3 lety +1

      I'm just glad that Frozen 2 attempted to age up their story a bit more, and at the same time I actually appreciate Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck for deciding to actually simplify their story later on in the production for the sake of the more important targeted audience, which are the bigger ones. The deleted scenes were awesome, and those cut content can actually be told well for the younger audience, but I think most of those were cut because of plotpoint changes over time more than the simplifying process for kids.
      Because of this, Soul is definitely a weird film. I love the direction of its inciting incident, but when the soul world was introduced where things started to get shaky, and never really landed well in the end. My takeaway with Soul is that it started telling a story about very specific things, but it ended with an underwhelming vague ending.

I think some elements were probably targeted for younger audiences, the body swapping, the little souls waiting for their sparks, depicted like being in some kindergarten ("quiet coyote") and of course 22, behaving like an insufferable brat before moving on to her awkward "teenage" not good enough phase...

    I think its made for older kids, that may understand this sentiment. Because honestly me at 14-17 would have appreciated a movie about appreciating life in a new refreshing way. I was quite sad and lonely. Seeing a movie about the deep, joyful part of life would have really helped me. It's a really profound movie about what life is really about. It's about living and loving every second of it. That there isn't one purpose to life. It's about connecting with others.

      Joe went back to teaching middle school, but this time he has more passion about it because he realized that his influence was far more significant than he thought. He wasn't appreciating life. He thought that once he played this gig he would be satisfied, but he wasn't. And that's why he wasn't happy. He expected it to fill that void. We all feel like we're chasing a dream or even the concept of happiness. We keep chasing complete joy but it doesn't truly exist. Instead we should appreciate the life we have. I honestly believe that people of all ages can understand this idea. They might not understand to the degree an adult does. But a lot of us don't feel content in our lives. Also, there are people that live very similar lives to Joe or even to the kids in the middle school. It's good representation for them. They can finally feel seen.

One of the internal conflicts is that Helen thought that Bob was having an affair. Syndrome killing off other heroes because of what Bob Parr said to him when he was a kid. Oh The Incredibles definitely has some mature themes, and those are one of the things that make it appealing to adults (those ultra realistic arguments really landed well for most parents!), but there was also a lot of easier-to-absorb things for children too. The basic plot was good guys versus bad guys, and the three kids have a lot going on to make things relatable to younger viewers. Plus, MOST people can relate to being in a family, no matter what their age is, so all the bickering and back-and-forths create something very realistic, relatable, and interesting to watch. I think 22 was such an “adult” in her behavior that Soul largely missed the opportunity to be more inviting for kids.

    The fact that you think a movie will traumatize forever a child just emphasize the stereotype of “ animation is for kids exclusively” pixar is famous by always making/giving a message but making it understandable and colorful enough for kids. Kids, specially these days with technology and so, are way more aware that other generations. And you never know if a movie like soul and a character like 2 will open their eyes to understand even more or even feel identified with. A movie that is a bit matured than what is expected from a “kids movie” won’t kill them, it will give them more clever ways of thinking or seeing life. Im sure you can think of a movie that caused that effect on you.
    I may not be it audience target but im into the animation career, and i actually loved the movie in an aesthetic and concept way. Just like in inside out, the movie helps to explain how sadness is not bad in a simple way, soul does that too but with death and wanting to enjoy life as best as you can by actually living life, and its not like its a crude movie it has it comedy too. Pixar always make a huge investigation before doing movies, coco is a good example tho, me being mexican i was worried they would fall in offensive stereotypes, but in the end many considered it a love letter for Mexico from Pixar with how great it was made.
    I literally cried when the movie showed the background of 22 in their “lost soul self” because im sure many kids have felt that way because of their parents who think they are making them a favor by insulting them or comparing them with other kids with their “tough honesty” , and seeing the protagonist comfort 22 and actually give them the compasion they looked for centuries made even more impactful for me at least. this kinds of movies are what can make a difference in someone’s way of thinking, i watched it with low expectations and it surprised me good way.

    The thing about animation, and what Pixar has said time and time again, they want to tell stories. Animation is a tool to tell stories and it can be heavy at times, so I honestly welcome this existentialism approach they went with. Kids may not understand some of the themes much like they may not understand the themes of infidelity in the Incredibles, or over commercialism in Wall-E, but it's there and they will see it when they grow older and gain a better appreciation for it. I know I did watching this film. I may not be a 40 some year old, but I know what it's like to not be able "live" for most of your life due to a narcissist parent and now I cherish very grocery run, every walk, every snow fall, every time I discover a new dish... It all apart of living... And this movie.... Put how I feel, for how alot of people need to see and appreciate .... How to just live. You have one life, what do you have to lose?

      If you look at Pixar’s library, 20 out of their 24 films are 100% child friendly without super heavy focus on emotional issues or dark themes. Even with movies that I find to have darker tones, like Coco, it’s still overall light hearted, colorful, fun, and everything works out nicely at the end. But now we have Soul, where nothing really wraps up - at best the movie ends at the climax - and we have dozens of unanswered questions because the movie gave almost no payoffs. Some people like that or don’t mind the openness or mature themes, but Soul is definitely way different from Pixar’s formula. They have always told stories from the perspective of entertaining young audiences while making something also enjoyable for adults - Soul is so one sided compared to everything else. But, you are totally welcome to love it and see things differently.

Remember that Steven Universe has plenty of mature themes too. I don't think Pixar should make stuff that fits more in the "made for kids" category. • @TheFangirlWatches
      @TheFangirlWatches  Před 3 lety

      You are more than allowed to disagree, but I still have to hold this invisible line that movies are for escapism (not every movie, of course, but if you notice the most successful ones tend to be heavy in escapism), and that movies from a kids studio should not be revolving around a theme that you’re going to die at any given moment. I understand part of that is a personal issue, but I had death rubbed in my face nonstop to the point that I started having panic attacks when I was about 5 years old. Crying for weeks straight, shaking, throwing up, and screaming all night long that I didn’t want to die. I’d calm down after weeks of going through that Hell, then something else overwhelming would happen and trigger that cycle all over again. I’ve met with other kids like me over the years, so I’m not an isolated case, and you don’t know which kids will get seriously messed up from this stuff until it happens. So, do I see movies that try to manipulate your emotions as a good thing? No. And, do I see movies dealing with big topics like death as a positive thing for a children’s movie studio to produce? Definitely not! Even Coco for the most part was light hearted and adventurous with a fulfilling ending, but Soul is just Middle Aged Crisis: The Movie, and I wish Pixar would have subdivided into another studio rather than mix Soul in with their library of children-oriented films. Yes, yes, “not every animated movie is made for kids,” but that is 100% of what Pixar made until Soul, so it can create misleading perceptions to people who see the Pixar banner slapped on a movie like this.

    Hi I haven’t watch the movie but what you say about it sound like it’s more for older people like 23 + I think because I was in love and I feel lost and I have lost a job. I think that it’s something for adults maybe. Again I haven’t watch it. So I have a open mind an heart for it when I get the chance to watch it. Have a nice day. Kah

    I loved the movie Soul. I think since the world is so crazy at the moment the movie is geared toward everyone. They want people to come together and heal. If that's not correct it's just my opinion and I want them to make another movie. I enjoyed the movie it was funny, different, healing, and just all-around interesting.

    It’s not a children’s film it’s a family film there’s a difference family films can touch on darker themes I assume with the intent of opening up a conversation between the parents and the children. Sorry the this is a pet peeve of mine. Pixar doesn’t usually make movies that don’t have dark themes

    • @TheFangirlWatches
      @TheFangirlWatches  Před 3 lety

      I very much disagree. A “family film” IS a kid film, because they are created in a way that children can absorb and understand them - so they are dumbed down or certain elements are played into harder to keep an appeal to youth. The difference, though, is that a family film tries to pull itself together in a way that adults can watch it too without wanting to jump off a roof (as my dad will tell you, Pokémon movies are NOT family films, they are not entertaining, and after the 3rd one he endured I was told he can’t do handle any more lol). Not to mention Pixar has only recently adopted a “dark” tone of movie. Toy Story one is a happily-ever-after movie, so is Bug’s Life, Toy Story 2, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Cars, Ratatouille, WALL-E, Up, Cars 2, Brave, Monsters University, Finding Dory, Cars 3, and The Incredibles 2. Other movies have some dark moments or a bitter sweet ending, but are overall aimed at younger audiences (that parents can survive/enjoy too), like Monsters Inc, Toy Story 3, Inside Out, The Good Dinosaur, and Onward. That’s TWENTY movies out of the 24 Pixar has released. And even 3 of those other 4 movies are still very kid-centric in their story telling, but Soul is a middle aged crisis on screen and does not really fit with the way Pixar has made movies or told stories before.

    • @Oiyuki
      @Oiyuki Před 3 lety +2

      @@TheFangirlWatches I never said they didn’t have happily ever after type movies they do it’s just that a lot of these movies also touch on some very dark stuff. Also for soul I feel like kids will not be paying as much attention to joe’s story as they are to22s. It almost feels like the movie has two separate storylines one for children and one for their parents which is admittedly a different way to make a family film than they normally would do but I think it still works

    I LOVE this movie! Afterwards I turned to my Husband and said that this was amazing and my favorite 💝! I loved that it had adult characters that were not idiots. And that it didn’t do the tired old trope of killing off a child’s mother or trying to turn the angst bratty child into a “hero” with no merit.

    They kind of glossed over the fact that most of 22's mentors, while famous for doing good, were actually flawed and even problematic people. For example, Mother Teresa is known for her acts of kindness toward the poor and the sick, but really she just sort of gave them a place to die while not tapping into the vast accounts of the catholic church to improve anyone's life. Also, she's number 22, which kind of implies that she would have been born near the beginning of human history if she'd had her spark. It kind of makes me wonder who he/she would have been. Also, did anyone else facepalm when Joe was offered a full-time job with health insurance and he wasn't SURE if he should accept it?

    • @TheFangirlWatches
      @TheFangirlWatches  Před 3 lety +1

      Oh yeah, Joe not jumping on that job offer and treating it like a prison sentence was maddening! Especially since that band PLAYED AT NIGHT! Not a lot of middle school band events happen at night! Marching Band starts in high school, which means there’d be, what? 1 or 2 concerts a year he’d have to stay late at school for. Plus, band teachers don’t tend to grade papers or have to stay at the school as long as other teachers. So... what exactly stopped Joe from living his dream in the evenings and teaching during the day? For me, this movie shows Pixar as more elitist and out-of-touch compared to their earlier stories. Their movies were a lot better when Pixar was made up of a bunch of people in their 20s who still remembered what childhood felt like, and not the mid-life crisis crew we keep getting lately.
