Are $2 bills rare or not?

- Many people think the 2 dollar bill is a rarity... but is it? In this video, the Director of The Two Dollar Bill Documentary examines the bill's "rare" elements by comparing them to actual dictionary definitions. Are they common? Is the Treasury still printing them? How many of them are out there? Time for one definitive answer about this great misconception.
I'm glad your back! Your videos are always interesting and informative. I really enjoy $2.00 bills.
Thanks Rick. I didn't really go anywhere - just didn't make a video for a while. I've always got one in the burner somewhere! Hopefully the next one comes soon.
I try to get $200.00 in $2.00’s and spend getting little things… i get lucky buying $2’s at some banks.. one bank had to go in the vault to get $200 worth of $2’s and i gave the teller 2, $100 bills.. John thanks for making the videos! Thank you! The reactions are either “That is so cool!” to “I need a manager to check if it’s real.” Some register workers bring out the counterfeit marker! I just smile when its proved good! 😎😎👍👍☕️☕️💎💎😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
I don’t have many $2 bills in my rebooted U.S. Banknote Collection. I have one Red $2 from Series 1953, and a 2013 Series Printed in Fort Worth, issued to Atlanta. The 2013 $2 is a part of what I call the “Two Dollar Series (1976-2017A)”. Basically I’m trying to get every series, every Fed. Reserve Bank seal, from both of the printing facilities. It’s a bit complicated, but I’m hoping at some point I’ll pick up some more $2 bills and whatever I don’t need will just be spent.
One of the coolest things in my opinion about the $2 is when I find one at my workplace - because I'm not even in the USA! I'm a UK $2 collector, and hang on to ones I find, both to spend them on an eventual trip to the USA, and to add any special ones I find to my numismatics collection. I recently started a job at a travel money exchange, so I handle a lot of US dollars, both by selling them to customers and by buying them back from people returning from their trips, and very occasionally I get some $2s in the till. Not only does this mean that someone in the UK went to the US and actually managed to keep them in circulation instead of simply stashing them away somewhere, but it was kept long enough to return home with them, and then ended up in front of me! In addition to the ones I keep, I try to keep them on their journey by including some of them in transactions whenever I can - not only does it expose more people to this underrated banknote, but hopefully it might inform them of its existence and encourage them to use it too :)
Not rare - just rarely seen or used. Another fun installment to your series. Here's an interesting question - why was the last series printed 2017A when there was no series of 2017?
Good to see you, msticks. And good point about rarely seen, not rare in general. As for other question, I knew the answer when I made a video last year about your series years work, but I honestly don't remember why 2017 has an A and never had it without. I have to research that!
@@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary Now I remember our discussion but I don't remember the answer either. By the way I finally finished my Large Size $2 bill type collection. Finally got the "Lazy Deuce". That one hurt!
Two comments.
1. I ordered a few thousand worth, from the bank. I mainly use them as gifts. The smiles are well worth it!
2. I used a Two bill to buy some pizza 2021 July 30., Friday. The cashier gave it back to me and said I have no where to put this. This was the first time I had a reaction like this. I put it in the tip jar.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing.
The salvage/recycle yard pays out a lot of $2 bills. It's easier for them because it's a lesser quantity of bills overall.
Did they make special Bicentennial bills? I remember the quarters n half dollars but am not sure if they did $2 bills.✌🏻☮️
Are you referring to the recycle place in Texas? There were no special Bicentennial bills... the issuance of a redesigned $2 bill in 1976 was in part to commemorate the event, but it was still an issuance of regular currency. People thought it was a special release, and that's why they got hoarded and stashed away.
@@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary the recycle yard I mentioned is in central Arkansas.
Cool thanks for the reply.✌🏻☮️
All new two dollar bills are Bicentennial Bills - just look at the back.
Can you legally spend colored 2 dollar bills i have some merrick mint custom 2 dollar bills am i still able to spend it?
Exchanging my hard earned cash for $2 bills at the bank is a way on how I save money. It’s simple, and I won’t have to worry about breaking the bank. With all that money saved in those $2 bills in a year’s time. You’d be surprised how much you could save by doing that.
True, as long as you don't spend the $2 bills! They are regular currency, as you know. I get a bunch at the bank and use them, but many people, like yourself, like to hold onto them. You have a solid plan!
What do u think of dollar coins do they have and extra valio let as know i have around 200 dollars of them?????
They're worth a buck each. Probably will never go up in value, since there are so many of them in vaults that never made it to circulation due to low demand.
My $2 bill is a 2003 series A, the stamp with Washington d.c. also says Connecticut on it and I'm really interested in finding out if its rare/misprint or a fake
If someone can help me get to the bottom of it, it's not all messed or anything
I'd have to see it to determine if it was a misprint. But you're better off taking it to a local coin & currency dealer, or sending them a pic. This is just a video channel on CZcams.
@@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary ight fasho just the direction I needed to be pointed to
Why don't banks regularly give out $2 bills to their customers? For example, if I were to cash a check that was for $158 I would get a $100, a $50, a $5, and 3 $1's. In this situation, why wouldn't a bank teller give out a $2 and a $1 instead of 3 $1's. It's something I've always been curious about.
It's a great point, and the only way to answer it is to say that institutions just aren't used to using them. Plus, some people might balk at being given $158 that way. Next time you have a transaction like that, just ask them if they could use a $2 instead. There's really no reason why banks shouldn't be doing it your way.
Hey! Just a question I have had for quite awhile now, if theres a 1 dollar bill and a 1 cent coin, a 5 cent coin and a 5 dollar note and then you know the rest but theres a 2 dollar note why not a 2 cent coin?
That's a great question, and one I cannot answer. Call the government!
@@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary I might just do that!
What was the first 2 dollar bill

Thanks Kevin! Sorry it took so long between videos. I won't stop making new ones... but I can't always say they will be coming regularly.
What are the different versions of $2 Bills?
This has been answered in several other videos on our channel. Also in the full movie which you can find on our channel page as one of the most popular
Its ironic that the two dollar bill is my favorite paper bill while the two cent coin is my favorite coin.
2 cent coin? Never heard of it
Well it was a short series I have a first year from 1864 it ran up to the early 1870s it was the first us coin to have in god we trust on it they are not expensive I bought one for $20 dollars.
The two cent and three cent are some of my favorites. Along with the large cent and the half cent. :)
Thank you for sharing this $2 info. I do think your channel is rare !!!
Do you think two dollar bills will be back in circulation in 2022 also I would like to get a two dollar bill if you answer the question because two dollar bills are not rare right They’re just not accepted or will recognize
What do you mean "back" in circulation? They ARE in circulation? They never left! They just printed more last year. I can;t make a video from this question so I'm sorry that I can't send you a $2 bill.
I have not found any banks that offer $2 bills any recommendations?
Tell them to order some. It's totally within their power to do so; they order other bills when needed - why not the $2? Tell the bank you need them for a chairty event of some kind. Ask for a strap of 100 of them. All they have to do is add it to their order.
Just ask. If it's the bank you have a business relationship with they will probably order them for you but it will probably be a pack of 100.
That's ridiculous. Tell them it's just like any other currency and you know it can be ordered the same way. If they fight it, ask them if they would charge you to order more twenties if you needed a thousand of them. They probably wouldn't. It's as simple as checking a box on a form. No need to charge the customer for that.
wow
Im from romania but i know english and im 10 years old how many 2 dollars bill hove 20 banks
Given how often items are sold for one dollar and ninety-nine cents, why do you think two-dollar bills are not more commonly used? My point is I would think that the government would have some kind of commercial suggesting you make requests for more from your bank.
I've made the same argument in other videos. The government worked hard to push the $2 bill back in 1976, but people looked at its beauty, tied to the bicentennial, and thought they were collector's items. To a large degree, the bill has never recovered from that stigma. The government wants people to use them because they can print half as many bills as ones and get the same value, saving them printing costs, but the people just won't make the change. So we continue on pulling out a $5 for that $1.99 item you mentioned.
The only time there rare is if there before 1976 or have starnote or have errors on them.
Good point. I didn't mention that in the video. I could have explained the red seals and errors, but I've covered that in other videos. I just wanted to cover the generic question here. Thanks for sharing.
@Don Clark Hello, i'm a collector and I'll be happy to answer your question.. honestly, the worth of Red Seal $2s depend on alot of things.. The Series, The signatures, and the Condition. But for the most part, their not worth much over face value.. but there's some factors that might increase the worth. You mentioned your note is in decent condition, so I'm assuming it's a grade VF-20.. in that case if its a 1928, its worth around $12.. if its 1953 or 1963, its worth $9.. now if its a Star note, it will slightly increase its value, but not by alot.. in other words, Red seal $2s aren't worth much. Even star notes aren't worth much.. However, tho.. There are exceptions.. remember when I mentioned "Signatures" ? Well in this case, if your $2 bill has a RARE SIGNATURE, it will increase its value by a ton.. for example, a 1928-B with Woods-Mills Signature will be worth $250 in VF-20 Condition.. if its a 1928-A STAR NOTE with Woods-Mellon Signature, it will be worth $750 in Very Fine Condition.. So check your note, and see what kind of series and Signature it has. That will determine its value 👌
@Don Clark Yes VF means Very Fine, and 1953-B is worth $9 in VF Condition.. $17 if its a Star Note.. now in Uncirculated Condition, 1953-B is worth $22.. but if its a Star Note in Uncirculated, it will fetch you $75
@Don Clark No not always.. only grade 70 is perfect. In that grade, there will be no evidence of handling visible at 5x magnification.. anything below 70 will have minor handling or slight folds, but still be considered Uncirculated.. Grades 50 - 70 are considered Unc, with 70 being the highest grade possible.. anything below 50 is NOT UNC
I have$50 worth from 2017
Do you ever get $2 bills in play money sets for children or education?
Funny you should ask. Here's a video I did on that exact topic: czcams.com/video/xU2lTapr_ws/video.html
when are you going to post something new?
Almost ready with a new one. New full-time job is really making it difficult, but I've got a new one nearly edited. Hang in there.
they made 2020 2s? I NEED 10 OF THEM
They made $2s in 2020, yes. I did not know about it either until I researched this video. I don't know if they're Series 2021 or not, or what part of the country they were sent to, but they did make them last year - just under 50 million of them.
Are $500 bills rare?
I've got over 13 hundred two dollar bills .
Wow. So you're the one hoarding them all. Get some back into circulation!
Bartenders love it when I tip with a $2. Customers on the Washington State Ferry System don't like them,
I guess no one who uses the Washington State Ferry System is a bartender.
i have a 1917 $2 legal tender note graded in choice fine 15
The $2 Dollar Bill is Lengendary 😎
So is Cookies & Cream!
How about the red seal $2 bill
Didn't touch on that in this video. I've addressed in in other videos on the channel.
I have a Couple Red seal $2 dollar bills.. from 1928, 1953, and 1963
There is another definition of the word "rare," if you cook a steak at a lower temperature. How many of you out there have bought steak with a $2 bill? I personally have bought brisket with some.
Yes! I almost included that definition, but I felt it was just going to take some credibility away from the point of the video.
@@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary Fair enough!
They can cook them if they want. Some people think they're unlucky, so I wouldn;t be surprised to hear of some people burning them at least.
My arent rare
Short answer: no
Sure, spoil it for everyone. :)
