Hi Edvard, I had last Party Shooting in AF_C with X-H2 80% out of focus. Then I changed in Menu AF/MF page 3 and 2nd Point Release/Focus Priority on AF-C to fucus instead release...now the camera hits mich more in focus even with 4.0 FW. You should give it a try.
PS: the Sony A6700 is light years ahead with fucus except in real low light.
      Thx for sharing

I'm glad you voiced my concerns; hardly anyone else is discussing this issue. I also feel that Fujifilm made things worse this time with the 6.0 version firmware update for the X-H2s. Issues that didn't exist in the previous version are now present in this one. I've been using the X-H2s for over a year now, and I really love this camera. Whether it's the colors or F-Log2, for someone like me who's an amateur hybrid shooter, I feel this camera strikes a great balance. However, I'm really disappointed with this firmware update. The previous update fixed a lot of exposure stepping issues, allowing me to confidently adjust focal lengths while recording my kids skating, with most exposures jumping around within 0.3EV, which was acceptable. But this time, the autofocus is really messed up. I still can't understand what exactly happened to the whole AF-C! I've been a long-time user of Fujifilm cameras, starting from the X-T1, X-T2, X-T3, all the way to the X-H2s, but this update has really upset me. I hope Fujifilm listens to everyone's feedback and fixes these issues as soon as possible.

I performed the test on my X-H2S, and your findings are 100% correct. I am a Fujifilm Camera User. I have the X-T5, X-Pro3, X-H2S, GFX50SII, and GFX50R. I've owned and used every camera brand except for Nikon and Hasselblad. Fujifilm's eye detection Auto-Focus System has never been reliable, so I never used it for my commercial work. There is a workaround in which you can do the same test, and if you are using Wide Tracking, whatever you put your autofocus on will stick to it and keep that part in focus. The fix should be easy with a firmware update. When you use Face or Eye Detection, they must ensure that it takes priority, like when you set your auto-focus on an item you track. Good work!

Thank you for your findings. I have owned an X-H2s after previously owning a Panasonic G9.
With the G9 I enjoyed photographing bees on flowers in the summer, I often got nice pictures that were in focus. Last summer I tried it with my X-H2s and didn't get any bees in focus. I suspected that my X-H2s may have had a problem and contacted Fuji service.
I felt like a fool who had no idea about cameras and how to use them, that's how rude and cheeky the Fuji technician was on the phone.
I gave up and sold my X-H2s, as they confirmed that I was too stupid to use the X-H2s.

Uggh yeah I've been complaining about the autofocus issues since even before the latest firmware update (I have an XH2S). I do wildlife and with bird/animal tracking, the box will say it's focused on the subject.. but when I bring it into Lightroom, I'll see that it's actually focused just in front or behind it. So the branch beside it for instance would be tack sharp but the subject would be soft. I crossed my fingers that the latest update would resolve these issues but sadly no :( and this is with the XH2S + 150-600mm lens which is supposed to be a killer combo. I find myself having to do 3-4 bursts on a relatively stationary subject with the hopes of having even a couple of acceptably sharp images (thank goodness for Topaz Photo).
I still remember my Canon 7D producing super sharp and properly focused shots.
Definitely making me rethink things... That last comparison vs the Sony really puts things into perspective :/ lol

Im not a fanboy of anything , I actually bought a sony a7s3 before xh2s and returned it because I think it was an overrated camera, the 12800iso looks like plastic and between 3000-10000 iso is garbage. Colors yach , EVF had a green tint when max brighness, screen is trash for a camera that expensive, my XT3 had a better screen than that.(I wanted to make a video about that too but I retuned it) But with a6700 for video I use luts and I am really close to fuji as a look. And it is a very cheap camera. I dont mind the screen or evf and quirks for the price.

This was not the case with my other cameras which do not have all these new features, the XT-1 and XT-20. I mainly used single point focus on those. Now I only use single point focus on my X-S20 to get properly focused images.
But for video shoots I think the AI assisted focusing works most of the time.

I am not a pro, I do street Photography and I am used to use AF-C tracking, and not trying to do a super accurate eye focus, but a least I expect the face is on focus. I have had many shots out of focus, even when the green square of the tracking mode told me that everything was fine ! Yesterday, I turned off the Face Detection, and I noticed several improvements; almost all my tracking photos were in focus. Apparently, Face Detection was messing with the AF-C tracking focus.

As for the AF-S + eye tracking workaround - that's just an oxymoron, isn't it? OK, so you can detect the eye and track it, but if want an in-focus shot, I have to get the subject to stop for bit, take the shot, then allow them to continue?! If the subject isn't moving, I don't need eye detect as I can do that myself! Come on...

Fuji tracking is good, the problem is when you take the photo the actual focus is somewhere else, it is not on the box that it showed. I have taken about 2000 photos since 6.0 update and many are out of focus, the ones that are OK are soft. I have very low number of photos in critical focus. Also, when you zoom in and check the focus of the image, the camera will sometimes tell you the focus is at a place that is completely blurry. I know the settings of the fuji system, I am not doing something wrong. I checked the settings over and over again.

@@edvard2942 The autofocus system can accurately tell the lens to switch between far away subject to near subject (meters apart and very fast) when using single point or group of points. And subject detection clearly identifies the eye (Machine learning lookup). But the algorithm does not trust the subject detection it seems. I've also seen samples where lens is doing smooth focus pulls (33mm linear one). but soon as you ask the camera to detect something it starts stepping and pulsing. I highly doubt if there is some system limitation, but its just a speculative theory till you see the code. I'm having similar issues on the XT5, Green box around the subject but it's out of focus in the pictures. I tried it out a lot yesterday with the latest firmware using animal detection and took photos of my dog running towards me. I adjusted the af-c settings to test a few different configurations and all the results were the same. Looking through the viewfinder the green box tracked the dog all the way until she was out of frame but only about 50% of the images were in focus. It seemed to be the further she was away the better. Once she got half way it looked like it was focusing just behind her. I was able to get better results when I had an XT3 using zone autofocus so I think I'll just stop using the subject detection modes and hopefully get a better keeper rate. Or if I can afford it, switch systems.

I got caught reading all this from dpreview, and tried to make sense of what the issue was. Thanks for highlighting this. If I understand correctly - you tell me if I got this- face detect does work well except if you have a partially covered face. But I see in this video it can also happen if you have an angle where you have things closer to the camera.
I think for my street work this would still work if face detect is still reliable if the face is perpendicular to the lens. But what's really weird and I can't understand people defending how the camera behaves, is that if the camera is able to recognize the eye, it should really be able to focus on the eye.
I would think this is a bug. It's weird. The hard job is to recognize the eye I would think- then you can direct the camera PDAF area to focus on the eye area. It's bizarre.
I am watching this because I am seriously considering getting the upcoming X-T50, and want the ability to focus with face detect with C-AF as an option.
I would say though, you would have made a whole series on Olympus/OM Systems if you were using them to try to focus :-). The OM-1 MKII may finally be there, but I want to see more independent reviews of it.

Autofocus C is quite complex on the Fujifilm system. I have not seen any complex setup on Sony A6300 except for video (to slow down the re-focus rate in case of obstacles encountered during filming) or to select eye focusing. But the results are solid. The camera lacks much other stuff (But it is a few years older, also.). The complexity of focus C on Fujifilm (X-T5 in my personal case), is a good thing for adjusting to particular needs, and I personally love it. However, I can understand people comparing a readily cooked focus system (that does what most expect) with a very polyvalent one that requires a better understanding of the tool being used.
I understand most people never read the user manuals of their tools because they think they already know how it's supposed to work. Big mistake in my own opinion.
That being said, I am no photo pro, so my use of the camera does not lead me to frustrate in any way, but it is also true that I seldom use focus C except for video. But I understand it requires to be adjusted to needs, and that means adjusting it for the different needs that evolve. A great adjustable focusing system is that continuous focus. I will need to adjust my focus C for my needs and test it like you did from a lower angle and with interference from the hand.
I'm not saying it works well for everyone, I'm just saying maybe it is more complex than "good or not good". I do agree that at the price point it would be expected to be excellent and no less. I once complained to another camera maker: "If you can't guarantee that your panoramic feature works most of the time, leave it out and don't pretend your product has it in there".
Update 2024-05-10: Tested with the intent of reproducing the problem. I was unable to fail. Setting of focus C was: tracking sensitivity 3, speed 1, zone auto. (In custom mode). Sorry, Fujifilm wins for me. Only issue was that due to my model's face being in the dark due to a baseball cap, her mouth was mistaken as an eye. But the mouth was always in focus as opposed to her hand.
Good luck to you in fixing your issue with focus C.

The camera not having a human brain cannot be expected to be excellent at identifying (at least in my understanding). If they got there, I'd start being scared of the future (even if it would make a photographer very happy). In Sony camera (I have a A6300) you can actually store pictures from someone's face so the camera will sort the "model's" face from others in a crowd. Of course, I never tried it, but it is available for use. Talk about advanced auto focus features...

Tbf a similar experience can be had on the R5. IMO the manufacturers need to implement a fail safe system that double checks focus separately. Regardless of how well their AF system performs.
With the “AI” algorithms now, this should be even easier to do than ever.
IMO users would rather the camera indicate the need to retake the shot or double check settings than to walk away thinking they nailed it. The camera screens are too small, EVFs aren’t of sufficient resolution, and add that you can do bursts, there aren’t easy ways to check images. It’s not dissimilar to high res mode. Most users IMO will prefer the camera can compile in camera so you can check than to go home and compile on their computer only to realise that it fails because of some issues

I just sold my X-H2S because i want to photograph a dog/cat/bird coming at me. The Fuji stacked sensor will give you more OOF photos than ever before, lol. Still subjects it 99% of the time was great focus. Video with exposure jumps for no reason could also be annoying. Yeah i got tired of waiting for the promised AF improvements. Day 2 with a Canon R6II, not knowing how to use it, and im hitting 99% of my action shots. With their cheapest lenses!

Same story here. I loved Fuji but couldn't wait more. The worst was when my son had a birthday, he was standing still in front of birthday cake with fired candles and not a single shot was in focus. I didn't use eye af and fired a burst of photos. Don't know how it happened. Usually with burst at least couple were in focus but not during this particular time. First day with Canon R8 with their not so great lens - RF 35 f1.8, my kids running at full speed and basically every shot is in focus. Don't have to spray and pray anymore like I did all the time with Fuji. I can finally use modern eye af and compose freely. Two different worlds.

Same here. I'm a dog photographer and I love the Fujifilm as a system, but I was tired of waiting for improvements. There were always images that were slightly blurry or the autofocus focused on the nose even though the camera indicated that the eye was in focus. In the Fuji groups you always read that you have to set 10 things (turn on burst, turn off AF-MF, etc.) I set my R6II to AF-C, Eye-AF on and the images are in focus and also with the "cheap" Viltrox 85mm I always have sharp photos.
It's so sad because the cameras are simply beautiful, but I have the feeling that Fuji is always taking two steps forward and one step back.
Let's see if Fuji can finally get the problem under control. I really hope so.

As many people have said in the comments, you need to read the manual and know your camera better.
I use the Fuji X-H2 to shoot events. I only take stills, no video.
I've got the C1 dial set to Continuous AF + Tracking + No Subject Detection for general shots.
When I want to shoot details and decorations, I use C2: Single AF + Single Point + No Subject Detection. This allows me to focus very accurately.
    .
When taking close-ups of people's faces, I use C3: Single AF + Wide + Eye Detection. This gives me a focus rate of 70%. If there is more than 1 person, my Fuji will focus on the closest person. If I want to focus on the person further away, I use the joystick to select the other rectangle, but because the focus tends to go back to the closest face, I use a dedicated button to switch face detection off and back button focus & recompose.
    .
For shots of people moving around the stage, I use C4: Continuous AF + Zone + No Subject Detection. But only when there's nothing between me and the subject. If there are heads from the audience or a microphone stand, the camera focuses on them. In these cases, I move to another area where there are no obstacles.
Come on guys! It's not that complicated, is it? ;-)
