    It was called a turbosupercharger because gas turbine technology was so new that they needed to refer to turbos in a matter that could be understood by everyone, and superchargers were very much in season, so they tacked on the turbo onto supercharger for familiarity to what it does.

    I mean, both turbos and mechanical superchargers are "superchargers", because that's just what they do. They supercharge the air.
    The Germans and a few more countries call them "Compressors", because a big part of supercharging is, of course, compression.
    The main reason why turbos/turbochargers omit the supercharger part is that "turbo" is much more consumer-friendly than "turbosupercharger".

    • @veselinstoyanov576
      @veselinstoyanov576 Před rokem

      They don't "supercharge" the air, they just compress it to force more air in the engine, one uses exhaust gasses and one uses mechanical power directly from the engine crankshaft to do that job

    Many aircraft engines of the time had either a multistage supercharger or a turbocharger and a supercharger. The P-47 had an integral supercharger attached to the engine as well as a turbocharger. Turbosupercharger can refer to a combined system, a turbo, or a supercharger, in this case the former.

    The engine in that airplane is called a Pratt & Whitney R 2800 don't know the dash number. I believe the horsepower is close to 2800 hp. And to get that they need to stuff the cylinders with air. It has an internal supercharger that feeds it. Most radial aircraft engines have internal superchargers. But they want more horsepower. So they add turbochargers. What you showed earlier was the turbocharging plumbing. Those two exhaust pipe looking things down below and behind the engine are waste gates. Not exhaust. Supercharger is inside the engine case you can't see it. That why it's called a turbo supercharger because it has both. The actually exhaust is right in front of the tail wheel. That where the turbochargers is.

    turbosuperchargers are exactly what they sound like. There is a supercharger usually directly driven by the engine crankshaft and there is a separate turbocharger. This method is used to provide more dynamic power at altitude because the superchargers have different gear speeds with corresponding critical altitudes. Above the critical altitude and the supercharger cannot provide enough boost to maintain maximum manifold pressure. The Brits, Germans, Russians, et al solved this issue by having two, three, or sometimes four supercharger gear speeds to maintain pressure at altitude. The US on the otherhand, opted to develop two speed superchargers paired with a turbocharger that would close its wastegate above the supercharger critical altitude to provide supplemental boost to the engine. The US then classified the turbosupercharger and proceeded to limit its use in aircraft, which condemned several otherwise promising designs (which relied on the turbosupercharger and the engine specifically designed to utilize it, the Allison V-1710) to be relegated to secondary theatres like the P-39. The turbosupercharger was fitted to Pratt & Whitney's R-2800 for the P-47 as the logical development to upscale the P-43 to accept the R-2800 instead of the smaller R-1830 which was anticipated to be an obsolete powerplant by the time of an armed conflict in the early 1940s.
    In game, this is why the P-47 and the P-38 (two US planes in game that were equipped with the full turbosupercharger system) start to develop a monstrous power advantage above 28,000 feet relative to most German fighters as the turbocharger is modeled as maintaining full engine power while the Germans start to experience power falloff as their superchargers start to lose boost. This is why the La-5 stops being dominant above 12,000 feet, etc...

    Is the P47M not purchasable anymore? I can't seem to find it anywhere.

      It isn’t always for sale. It pops up for sale every once in awhile. I think it was for sale fairly recently, just don’t remember when.

    I highly recommend checking out Greg's Airplanes and Automobiles channel, he's got a fantastic series of 8 or 9 extensive videos covering the p-47, as well as a whole lot of other stellar videos
