After the battle of Belgrade, German field marshal August von Mackensen erected a monument to the Serbian soldiers who died defending their capital, saying, -HIER RUHEN SERBISCHE HELDEN(Here rest Serbian heroes), both in German and Serbian.

Out of 51, 47 of them are accounted for and being kept in Belgrade military museum. 3 were destroyed in battle by Serb forces in order to avoid them falling to enemy hands. And the last one, most glorious one, of the famous Iron regiment (Second Infantry Regiment "Knjaz Mihailo" of the first call of the Moravian Division) was the funeral cover at the funeral of King Peter the First Karađorđević and was buried with him.

I must say the Serbians must have been Brave to stand up against two big powers, even if They lost they were effective, serbs must be proud.
Serbs didnt lose but won the war,and also Serbs had more military combat experience than any country in europe at that time(along with Bulgarians)so its no wonder why they fought so hard.
Now We Are Free well the serbs was pushed into albania, in the process losing all their land.
Thats something called tactical withdrawal or full retreat,its not the same as losing the battle or war.They retreated,recovered,reorganized and got back into fight and eventually reclaimed their land liberating many other balkan countries in the process aswell.

guys are a feat of the Russian defenders Osowiec fortress! What's wrong? it's a story! "attack of the dead" 60 vs thousands! it's shameful that you do not know the story! What's wrong with you?! 6th August 1915 "The Germans waited until 6 August for the right wind conditions. At 4 am, at the same times as regular artillery started their bombardment, German forces used poison gases against the defenders. Thinking that all of the defenders were dead, fourteen battalions of Landwehr - at least 7000 infantry men - began advancing. When German infantry reached the first line of defense, they encountered what was left of 13th company of the 226th Zemlyansk regiment (about 100 men). Being unprepared for resistance and seeing the bloody clothing the remaining defenders wore (Russian soldiers were coughing blood up because of the effects of the poison gases) put the Germans in a state of shock and caused them to break and run. The five remaining Russian guns subsequently opened fire on the retreating Germans. European papers afterwards called this «The attack of the dead men (ru)».

Serbian army unfortunately lost this battle.

What's the song about?
Its about Serbian soliders who fought against German and Austro-Hungarian Empire. We were outnumbered yet we managed to stop them twice. Sadly in thrid attack when Bulgaria also joined them we had no chance so we decided to start retreating and join allies in Salonica and fight there. Song is about one regiment which was left to defend Belgrade( Serbia's capital), they all fought heroically until their last breath.

Serbia had the biggest balls of the century to take on both *GERMANY* and Austria-Hungary, and later Bulgaria. That's 2 world powers and a regional power, they were fucked. But nope, Serbia stood strong and kept up the fight.
Don't get me wrong all the respect in the world to their soldiers for going on a suicide mission but they kept up jack shit. And the only reason they put up any resistance at all is because russia promised their independence and realistically they ''only'' fought Austria since Germany was busy keeping russia at bay since for some reason Austria started a war with all it's divisions spread out in the most bizzare places ever.
My friend you should adjust your history knowledge of WW1 and especially the Serbian history of WW1. Even though we "only" fought Austria and Bulgarija, they didn't only had a bigger army but they had much better weapon technology. Serbia didn't won because of the quantity of soldiers but because these soldiers were led by genius generals.

I'm Serbian and I cry after watching this for 10 minutes every time, but then I remember I should be proud to be a part of my proud country. These heroes truly did defend until their last dying breath, and I hope I can help my country in the same way these soldiers did. Every nation unites after a common enemy. We all forget our differences so we can fight a threat to our freedom. Even after the power-hungry Austro-hungarians attacked we managed to hold our line until Bulgaria backstabbed us.

Dragutin Gavrilović was captured by the Axis during their invasion of Yugoslavia in WW2 He survived the war in a prison camp, later returning to Yugoslavia which was under communist control. He died in 1945, in Belgrade. There are several different accounts about his death. According to one of them, when he returned to Belgrade he was wearing the only suit he had, uniform of Royal Army. At Belgrade railway station he was noticed by a group of partisans and beaten to death because of his uniform.What a tragic fate.

He was not beaten to death nor beaten at all ! he was sent for questioning for a few days and then released with social/government pension.Thou it was much smaller than it was supposed to because they did not want someone to stir up trouble and cause further conflicts...and that is why they even sent him for questioning.It was turbulent times,which was also the reason as to why memory of him was avoided for few years,even in school text books.Only when the situation calmed down they thought about him and only about him in WWI.

It is dedicated to the battle for the Osowiec fortress, where for the first time on the eastern front was used a gas attack, but despite this, the soldiers of the Imperial Russian Army, without masks, launched a counterattack and defeated the superior German forces. This battle took place on August 6, 1915 and went down in history as the "Dead attack". It was then that an expression of "Russian do not surrender".(a little bit of historical facts)
