----------LYRICS--------------
Many many years ago, when Persia came ashore
Heeding Leonidas' call the Spartans went to war
Joined by their brothers, a few against the fateful horde
Hellenic hearts are set aflame, the hot gates calls their name
A final stand, stop the Persians, spear in hand
Form a wall, live to fall, and live forever
Sparta! Hellas!
Then, and again, sing of three hundred men
Slaughter! Persians!
Glory and death, Spartans will never surrender
Morning has broken, today they're fighting in the shade
When arrows blocked the sun they fell, tonight they dine in hell
By traitor's hand, secret passage, to their land
Know his name, know his shame will last forever
Sparta! Hellas!
Then, and again, sing of three hundred men
Slaughter! Persians!
Glory and death, Spartans will never surrender - Hudba
Fun Fact: When Leonidas told his greek allies they could leave, the Thespians and the Thebans refused and died with the Spartans.
Really? From what i know only the 300 spartans stayed and died when the others retreated
@@nuk3407 At the beginning of the battle, the Greek forces numbered around 8,000. In the battle, they would swap who was guarding the pass e.g the thebans would guard it then swap out with the Spartans. The greeks had ranged units as well such as slingers and javelin- wealding skirmishers. Most of these were helots (spartan slaves). They held of the Persian army for 2 days during which they endured wave after wave of assaults. Then on the end of the second day, Ephialtes the Shepherd (not a hunchback) told Xerxes of the goat path. He sent a force of 20,000 men to encircle the greeks. The 1,000 Phocians guarding the pass didn't surrender but withdrew to a hill. The Persians shot a volley of arrows and ignored them. Upon hearing this Leonidas called a council of war. He asked his allies to leave, many did, but the 700 Thespians, 400 thebans and 900 helots stayed. They marched out into the open field to make their stand.
Yes thebans didn't
basicaly only 700 Thespians refused to leave . Leonidas held the Thebes without their will, as hostages, to die in battle because the city of Thebes took the side of the Persians. something like punishment.
Nuk It was called 300 due to the spartans were positioned to make them look like a weak force of only 300 while in reality there was more than thousands behind them the spartans fell due to the secret passage that was defended by another greece force fleeining from battle after seeing the ammount of people
"Go, stranger, and to Sparta tell,
That faithful to her laws we fell."

Wish people wouldn't keep forgetting the 700 Thespians that stayed with the Spartans on the final day
most people actually think that there were only 300 Spartans against the Persian army from the first to the last day of the battle(s) (thanks to the movie)
+egw esu actually the spartans made the last stand the last day in Thermopylae and this song is about the Last stand as is the whole album about last stands
Leønidas yes I know that
What I'm saying is that (apart from the last day) other Hellenic armies had joined them. The 300 and the Thespians remained to cover their escape.
yes but none of them are mentioned im saying at least remember the Thespians. oh well at least they have something at the hot gates
There's a book called the hot gates, and the writer not only talks about the Thespians, but the Spartan Helots who fought and died at Thermopylae
How did they even manage to fight dragging their huge balls around the battlefield?
One at a time
They had an advantage cuz they used spears.
@@ghplayzboi9295 So did the Persians it was the armor and training that made the difference.
the balls anchored them to the ground, thats how the three hundred managed to shove off the 10,000

Unless you are lucky enough to have your History teacher play you Sabaton songs during the lessons :) (mine played us 40:1, Primo Victoria and Union)
Lucky fucker.
I'm all for using Sabaton songs in history class, but you're acting like the battle of Thermopylae was this big, historic event that *has* to be taught in schools. As interesting as it is, I think there are more important subjects to tackle first in high school.
@@SeverMetal I agree, there are way more subjects that should be covered. For instance like the Battle at Rorke's Drift, British Colonization, the complete betrayal of the Arabian people at the Sykes-Picot Agreement, etc.
The Fall of Constantinople should have been a song in this album
How exactly would that trigger them? Conquering a city through violence, while being an impressive military feat for anyone fascinated with warfare, isn't exactly something to be proud of from a morally ethical standpoint. You can't really claim that a hypothetical song about the Fall of Constantinople would persecute Turks or Muslims because at the end of the day, conquering foreign land and then proceeding to treat the natives like shit is just another form of persecution. An act which every empire in history has done, of which the Ottomans are no exception. Then again, we're talking about a religion whose followers are willing to kill cartoonists for depicting their prophet in unflattering ways, let alone at all, so maybe I shouldn't expect the sensibilities of fundamentalist muslims to make any coherent sense whatsoever.
K9theXV
I'd think if Sabaton made a song about the fall of Constantinople it'd be a song praising the bravery of the defenders and the betrayal from western Christianity, not the thirst of the sultan to conquer the "city of cities".
So for that reason I don't think it would be a song that would be congratulatory towards the Turks for being so many and rich that they managed to take the city.
Iordáin Breathnach
Well it wasn't Roman but Greek and the only volunteers helping defend the city were 2000 Genoese and Venetians.
The rest of Christendom were eager to see their fellow Christians fall thinking if that happened they'd be sage from the Islamic threat. Little did they know...
***** Well the people of the Eastern Roman Empire continued to refer to themselves as Romaioi right up until the end and even for sometime afterwards. The Fall of Constantinople was the final collapse of the Roman state even though the only people left that were citizens of the Empire were Greeks. I do know that western help was pitiful but the volunteers that did arrive to fight to the last for the eastern bulwark of Christendom deserve to be remembered too
Iordáin Breathnach
The people of the Byzantine empire as historians call it today because it was called the Roman empire by its citizens but it was known as the "empire of the Greeks" by western europeans, was in fact populated mostly by Greeks but all its citizens spoke the Greek language.
The Byzantines referred to themselves as "Romioi" deriving from the term Roman but meaning Christian Greek. They didn't like the term "Hellene" which is how we Greeks refer to ourselves today but also in pre Roman times, because it was associated with the pagan religion of the ancient Greeks.
As for the few Italian volunteers, they are remembered in our history books and respected as brothers in arms against the massive invasion of Muslims but the fact is that there was no help from the west, mostly backstabbings.
This movie was so popular that they went back in time and actually did it.
The day when Greeks saved Europe
bruh learn history Europe was mostly inhabited by nomadic tribes in those times, what did the greeks saved? apart from their own country? gee it's like talking to children who believe anything they watch
@@dolfyhilter577 the world we live in today would have been vastly different if the Persians had conquered Greece. Do you think they'd stop there? No, as you say they would march through the nomadic tribes and conquer the entirety of Europe, creating a vastly different world. You are like a child that is unable to see how everything is interconnected with each other. Read history.
However good point that Greeks cared about their own country and couldn't give two shits about the "barbaric" tribes of Europe.
Which wasn't even a country, just a bunch of Hellenic Tribes with their own city states, hating on each other and pointing fingers while thinking that "they" (be they spartans, athenians, corinthians, macedonians etc etc) where the OG Greeks.
-Source: I'm Greek.
@@TheIsleNarrator you just repeated me lol try to be creative, if they would actually decide to go against the tribes in mainland europe after greece then why did they not conquer other nomads in asia? like the scythians, darius tried to drive them off and conquer their lands, but since they were nomads he gave up, and so did every other kings after him, if the persians conquered greece i'm pretty sure the greeks would rise up like the ionians and after a while be independent again. so no, the europe would have stayed the same, perhaps without alexander, and the west would have stopped making movies like 300, rome would rise anyway and the two powers would fight, greece falls in the hands of rome, and the 2 would fight and fight until one is defeated, or a treaty is signed, but maybe instead of muslims the greeks would rise and conquer both rome and persia, but idk, what do i know i'm just a child who doesn't know anything about history source: i'm persian

what Leonidas did to the Persians is the same that the former british army major Kolokotronis did to the Turks in 1800s and the same that the Greeks did in WW2 to Italy. They challenged on equal footing, an indisputed unchallenged God-like power of their era, while every other nation fled or kneeled. Its not about heroism. Its all about heart. Its the fiery faith that feeds their little hearts down there. Thus boys have no fear in your every day lifes. thanks so much for reminding our history so well...in these times of crisis and low spirit in greece, we forget what we are capable of, if we believe again in ourselves, in the true spirit of HELLAS
We basically owe our entire culture to these men. Yes, there were others involved, but the Spartans made up the front line
Once more, the history repeats it self, brace your self sons of the ancient Greece. Protect us once more against the barbaric hordes.
The difference is now is that Greece is racially mixed. The Spartans were nordic, that is racially pure, unmixed native European.
@Rοsαlίe
Then you haven't done your research.
All of Europe used to be Nordic, by nordic i also mean "Nordic looking". The nordic features are recessive and thus started to dissapear first in southern Europe due to Non-European admixture from Middle-east and Africa. All native and unmixed Europeans were nordic.
Ancient Greek words for hues of blond:
Xanthos=light blond
xouthos=dark blond
pyrrhus=reddish blond
polios=straw blond, greyish
chloros=dirty blond
eychomos=blond hair in general
melichloros=light honey blond
Even the the words melas probably had the initial meaning of dark yellow like seasoned honey, but later the Ionians (the most mixed and urbanized of the Hellenes) gave it the meaning "dark". The abundance of Hellenic words for shades of blondhair proves what the original phenotype was.
Do i even need to talk about the Greek pagan gods which are described as blond? Of course the pagan gods are not physical but personifications of mother nature. ie. Zeus is equilevant of the norse Odin.
Odin=mind, memory
Odin is the sum of all of your forebears etc.
@Rοsαlίe
Lol they're pretty funny. I recommend reading Cornelius Tacitus, he also mentioned that ancient Rome was blond (Nordic) but started to transform to dark due to non-European admixture.
During his time, most people were already mixed, but the nobles were still nordic. ie. Nero who had golden hair and blue eyes (Wonder why he is so blackmailed today) gee.
@@Junde14 Whaaaaat ? The Spartans ? Nordic ? Man what do you smoke ? Greeks where part of the Metiderenian race a little team that belong to the kaukasious race ( the whites) since everything we have nothing to do with the Nords

A few years ago, the Persian Empire was established
Spartan saw Leo's voice in the war
Their brothers, with horde shields, joined them
Greek is Greek, which means they are gateways
The end, the Persian extermination, an object in the hand
There is no way to live in the fall of eternal life

Thanks and death, Spartana will not leave

In recognition of his name, I am convinced that he will always be ashamed

I am a simple Romanian. I see Romanian subtitles, i like.
This song sent a milion shivers down my spine. It's...incredibly beautiful, like all Sabaton's masterwork. Respect to all Hellenic heroes!
The Greeks didn't just deploy 300 Spartans to opose the Persians at Thermopylae. The Greeks initially numbered a few thousand soldiers oposing a Persian force ranging from several hundered thousand to a few million troops depending on who you ask. After holding their own for two days, they were informed of a possible encirclement and most of the force retreated. However 300 Spartans under Leonidas, plus 400 Thebans and 700 Thespians decided to stay and fight to the last. So it was not the case of a few hunder men holding back an entire army, but rather of their voluntary sacrifice in the face of certain defeat. It may be even more badass that way.
The Theban contingent were essentially hostages to ensure Thebes, which had already thrown in its lot with Xerxes, wouldn't actively support Persia for the time being. According to Herodotus, they fought half-heartedly and surrendered as soon as they got the chance.
So racist!
Probably the most famous last stand in western history. Simply epic, and perhaps critical in saving western civilization as we know it (though definitely not as much as the battle of Salamis).
This movie/scene boosted average man's testosterone levels by a 1000 fold, so if we add Sabaton's music on top, the outcome would be just outrageous.
And so, after more than 2000 years from that battle, we still remember them
Like 2502 years ago.
