I have no Serbian heritage, but the gravity of this song really hit me when I first heard it. The idea that troops from a small nation were defending their capital from two of the largest European powers alone is compelling. But then to hear that these troops were told this was how and where they were going to die…. It’s incredibly powerful. This song is sadly underrated.

August fon Mekenzen, after he took Belgrade, raised a monument to 39 soldiers, of which two were Brits, one French, the rest Serbs, after they held for two days, nights, the whole 208. Prusian regiment, until they lost the last bullets, and went on with bayonets, shovels, until they fell. They wanted to break trough some path and surround Belgrade defence, but couldn't becouse of those 39. Ours were raising monuments for enemy soldiers, or would bury enemy soldiers with their own, believing that in death they are not enemies anymore. And Mekenzen liked running into those along the way, so he raised a monument to enemy heroic ones, impressed with their bravery, determination (not that they had any other choice, if not fighting they would've died from heavy, non- stop bombardment. Whatever was moving was offed. Even families running away from Belgrade would end ul blown up, executed on roads. Centuries of war crimes were not a thing back them. Extermination was always a goal, and tried over and over again)
I've heard someone say before "Sabaton is legendary because they can make you feel pride and patriotism for a country you've never been to" and I really like that, this is one of those songs.

@@ObradPopovic-cs8iffirst, communists, and second...we don't do that, in general. Neither spreading the truth, and not to mention propaganda all the others heavily invest in. With us it's always "God will sort that out one day". Now even Turks claim we are lying, spreading evil Serbian propaganda (Greeks were sharing painting of St Teodor skinned alive after leading an uprising), and that we were never occupied by them. They never killed, enslaved any Christian, that was a no-no in their holy book, that they were conquering, enslaving with hugs and kisses, BUT if crimes were committed, it was because we were rebelling (on our own land, they claim was somehow theirs) against their rule, and suppressing rebellion is not a crime :) we are almost at "the Ottomans were actually victims of those evil Serbs"

Also, the Germans raised a monument for Serbian defenders, after being impressed by their bravery. Probably the only case in history that you honor an enemy in that way...

After the breakthrough of the Thessaloniki front, an army of 700,000 soldiers was thrown out of the war, and Germany ordered a general retreat. Emperor Wilhelm, outraged, sent a telegram to the Bulgarian emperor: "62,000 Serbian soldiers have decided to go to war. Shame!"
It was recorded that the Bulgarian soldiers, seeing the Serbian soldiers, whom they thought were finished in 1915, attacking, threw down their weapons and ran away shouting that "the dead are coming".

They played this song live in Belgrade, reciting the major’s speech beforehand with Joakim waving the Serbian flag as he sang. The crowd went wild, for good reason. Edit: I made this comment halfway through the video not knowing you were gonna watch the live 😅

This is why Sabaton are greatest band out there. Simply because they bring all together and stand as one without enemies, regardless of your Nation.
You mentioned hussars, fon Makenzen is a hussar. Hussars are made in Serbia.
I just want to point out that there IS a video, and it's very good! I really recommend it - the ending is cool as well, since it references a famous photograph from the Great War.
When I say famous - I mean, famous in ex Yugoslavia at least.

And this is only the second most epic moment in Serb WWI story. The other one concerns breach of Salonica front where they, after a couple of years in exile in Greece, rush into such a devastating charge that French allies repeatedly plea to them to slow down and be more cautious, to no avail. Serbs end up freeing their entire country, defeating Bulgarians, pushing back Austria-Hungarians all the way back and, at least according to German Kaiser, turning the war...
Well, Serbs and Poles have same origins, hence the similarity! And their histories were similarly tough.

Last Dying Breath is from the Last Stand album. The songs from the Last Stand are all about fighting to the last dying breath at incredible odds. It's my second favorite album after Heroes.

@@Hockey-gn2tj well that’s your opinion, on the history side of it the last stand, hill 3234 and last dying breath were pretty interesting to me on the history side of it but as for the song, the ones I have mentioned earlier is what I liked more
Totally agree with the sentiment of Sabaton shining a light on less known bits of history and really helping the countries involved get the recognition they deserve. A similar recommendation for a story that often gets overlooked by history books is Cliffs of Gallipoli, though that might be a lengthier video since its history lesson is split up into two parts. I'd say that even if that is a bit too long for a reaction its still a good idea to check it out on your own since its truly a great story that highlights some of the humanity that could still be found in the great war.

As a serb living in Sweden, I've never had any problems aside the typical stereotype of big criminal serbian guys, which is OK, we are kind of criminal. But they do have a lot of interest in our history and our wars. They usually ask and take up random events that I am even flabbergasted at when we have our after works. Swedes and Sabaton especially are a brand in themselves in our world.

Hey, you must see the last sabaton vidéo.
It speaks of an absolutely immortal Belgian soldier, I summarized his story: he served in the British and Polish army.
Adrian was born into a Brussels family, who sent him to London to study, so he would become a rich lawyer, with a good life...
At the first parents' meeting, the school assures the father that Adrian never came. But where is he then?
At the same time in South Africa: Adrian joined the British Army as "Trooper Carton", and started kicking ass. Unfortunately, while storming a fort, he was shot in the head, stomach, and leg. He doesn't just survive, he gets back on his feet in just a few months and declares "I should have done more weight training, I could have taken more bullets."
When the first war broke out, he was sent to Africa, where he was still wounded. They repatriate him to England, but he refuses.
"But where do you want to go then?"
"I want to go to Europe, it's too easy here!"
"Okay..."
Adrian is therefore sent to Europe, where he will take command of a battalion.
At this point in the story, Adrian limps, he's missing an eye, he's taken more than a dozen wounds that would have been enough to kill a normal man, but not him. And he'll prove it once again when his trench gets bombed, the rear trench that housed the officers. All the officers die, except one. Only, it was necessary to carry out a charge in the afternoon, with the four regiment of all these officers. No problem, Adrian, after being bombarded, still limping, one-eyed, etc... will run in each of the trenches to order the assault and hit anyone who hesitates with his cane, he will lead the charge four times in front of his men. In addition to surviving this quadruple charge, this one will succeed.
When the end of the war arrived, he was sent by plane to negotiate with the Germans. The plane crashes, everyone dies except one person. Adrian, simply has nothing. He leaves, the plane re-crashes, but he still survives, then the war ends before he could reach Germany.
He will then go to fight for Poland during his multiple wars, and will still live some incredible stories:
When he was on a train to negotiate with the Ukrainians, they spotted the wagon with the officers, shot it. All the officers die, except one. Adrian will say on arrival "it gave me a very bad opinion of them.". During the 1926 war between Poland and the Soviets, Adrian is on an observation train. The Russians are sending cosqaues, horsemen to nab him. The train starts, but the cossacks drop like flies, adrian lighting them with his revolver. They manage to touch him, Adrian falls from the moving train, but he survives. Better: he gets up, starts running with his only valid leg, catches up with the train, goes back up, and starts shooting at the Cossacks again, who drop the case.
After that, to thank him for his services, Poland offers him a mansion and a retreat. He took advantage of this until 1939, when war broke out. The Luthwaffe will machine-gun his house, he survives. He flees on the roads, has his car machine-gunned, but still survives.
Better: he passes behind the German lines, who are looking for him.
"Guys, we're looking for a one-eyed old man, with an English mustache, missing an arm and a leg, with a strong Belgian accent."
The Germans won't find him and Adrian manages to steal a boat and return to England. I'm going to pass on his exploits during the Norwegian war, because I don't know them well, but he is part of one of the only battalions to have survived.
He will then be sent to France to advise the resistance, then he will be sent to Italy to, again, help the resistance. Except we send him on a plane. The plane crashes in the middle of the Mediterranean. Guess who survives the crash, and swims to Italy with a good arm and leg?
He will lead a gerilla alone for three weeks there, before being caught. The Italians will negotiate an exchange, very happy to have a prisoner of this value, before returning to see Adrian to tell him that he has been released. Except Adrian wasn't there anymore. He will escape another two weeks from the Italians and will narrowly fail to succeed in returning, but will be caught.
The Italians tell him that he is released, but Adrian refuses. Because that would imply that he be demobilized. Instead, Adrian will break everyone out until the Italians get fed up and release him unconditionally.
In 1946, Adrian is in China, with Mao Zedong ruling the country. A guy who caused 90 million deaths, the greatest genocidaire in history, who killed for a yes or a no.
Guess who stood up at one of his meetings to yell "Yeah, you're crazy, but we don't see you much against the Japanese!"
Mao recognizes Adrian and just gives a nervous chuckle before continuing, being too afraid that he will genocide his guards if he tries to kill him.
Adrian will return to Belgium and retire, writing his memoirs before dying of old age after a long and peaceful life, aged 84. He will write "honestly, I enjoyed the war."
