Milunka Savič is said to be philanthropic in this song because she did not kill when she could capture enemy soldiers. She also adopted over 30 children in her later years.
So she was also a super mum too?
Yeah, this part of her story was way down the list, to what I expected. She just wanted to live a life in peace after the wars, and helped many orphaned kids to a better life. Great warrior and great humanitarian.
Tnx for reacting to this. She rejected France citizenship and loved humble life, worked as a janitor after the war and addopted a lot of children. If this lady was American we would see a lot of movies.... As a Serb I'm rly glad people like yourself reacting to this@@themetalmuse❤
@@themetalmuse Yeah, there were lots of orphans after WW1 in Serbia since the country lost 30% of its population. Milunka had a younger brother who got called into the Balkan wars (that were a year before WW1). As the story goes, he was only 15, so practically still a child. Milunka was the oldest child in the family, 20 or maybe 22 at the time (records are not sure), and she decided to go instead of her brother. She cut her hair and singed herself under her brother's name, Milan. No one knew she was a woman until she was injured and the fact was discovered in the hospital. Army wanted to transfer her into a nursing staff after that, but she wouldn't hear of it, and since she did some incredible stuff, they relented. She proved herself and so she got into the Iron Squadron a year later when WW1 started
She's NOT the only highly decorated Sebian woman in 1WW. There is also city lady from Belgrade, Sofija Jovanović decorated with many Serbian and Aliance honors. But if you want more to understand come to Belgrade and in House of Army and in Military museum, both in Belgrade you can find a lot of historical documents and material exponates, like canons, guns, decorations, military uniformes etc. from 1WW.
Prague is next on my trip list. However I’d like, if I had time to study that topic more.

I also have a project planned for later this summer/early fall Since I'm an avid hiker on top of being a history nut, I'm going to hike the Maginot line wearing British ww2 gear and make a little documentary for her classes. 😁
Excellent reaction. Milunka Savic fought in numerous engagements, starting with the Balkan wars (where she disguised herself as a man and took her brothers place since he suffered from tuberculosis) and continuing through WW1 where she fought in both the Serbian and French armies. She was wounded nine times and earned 12 military awards for valor from four countries. After WW1, the French offered her citizenship and a pension, but instead she returned to her beloved Serbia. When the Germans invaded Serbia in WW2 she organized an infirmary which treated partisans, an action that resulted in her being sent to a concentration camp. Among her medals are:

2x French Légion d’Honneur (Legion of Honour)
Russian Cross of St. George
British medal of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael
Serbian Miloš Obilić medal.
French Croix de Guerre 1914-1918 with the gold palm (she is the only female recipient of this award)

I believe the Hollywood execs have had to amend that to “Movies with female leads don’t do as well as movies with male leads” these days, but the attitude is still very prevalent.
Not only is she a badass she and the most decorated female soldier in all of recorded human history - she has the highest awards for bravery possible from multiple countries and was even offered a full military pension and benefits from France if she wanted to retire there even though she wasn't French.
She NEEDS a blockbuster movie, girls need more insane role models like this.
She got there Mulan style - her brother was sick and she took his place by dressing as a man. She was discovered by the surgeons after she was injured and they wanted to kick her out and send her home but she said no and that she would stand there and not move until they let her back in - it took them like 12 hours and she didnt move a muscle and they caved and let her stay because, quite frankly, she was the best soldier there.
The fact people like her exist blows my mind - Wonder Woman WISHES she was Milunka Savic.

A good story I know about Milunka:
During one battle she captured a group of Bulgarian soldiers.
One of them was so impressed with her, that after the war he sent his son, who was in the Belgrade military academy, to her so she could teach him how to be a proper soldier.
This was in a time that women still weren't seen as truly equal to men, so she must have REALLY stood out to make an impression like that.

Once we fought for free Europe and been on side of good , our ancestors died like my granddad in ww1 and we get bombed from those same allies in 99 and killed my mother the same bloodline from that granddad who fought for that same free europe you live in now. Let that sink in a little bit. I hope just that heroes of that time dont fade away cause the kids who watch marvel and dc universe heroes doesnt have a clue what real bloodshed is and what took for them to live in a comforting home watching youtube,netflix and et cetera.

Milunka Savić joined the army instead of her brother. at that time women could not be soldiers. She skillfully disguised herself as a woman until she was wounded the third time. when they bandaged her, they saw that she was female. She was wounded a total of 9 times. After the war, France offered to live and be an honorary citizen of France, she refused and remained living a modest life in Serbia. It should also be said that Milunka is the woman in the world most decorated with medals for bravery and participation in battles.

I love this story! Yes, Sabaton could, and should, do a whole album dedicated to women who fought with untold bravery. They could start with Buodicea (pronounced Boo-dica apparently) who took advantage of a weakness in the Roman forces to avenge their murder of her own family. That was yet another "300"-style story in history. There are countless other great stories of fierce women that need to be brought to modern ears.

Fun fact there were several women in the past that were amazing in warfare, her, Μπουμπουλίνα and lieutenant Νατάσα (both from Greece) and many others from other countries but due to the modern ones their achievements have been buried and underestimated

And there are also stories about the surprise of the enemy soldiers when they realized that a woman had captured them, disarmed them and escorted them to the regimental headquarters all by herself. On the Thessaloniki front, in one raid, she captured forty-three, and in another, sixty Bulgarian soldiers. She saved a company of Bulgarians when they were drunk towards the Serbian trenches, she did not let the Serbian soldiers shoot. in marriage, she gave birth to one girl, in addition to whom she also raised three adopted daughters and educated another thirty-two children.

They _never_ get the recognition they absolutely deserve - so I get giddy with excitement any time one of their stories surfaces. Her story is really insane. WW1 was the 3rd war she fought in. ( First two Balkin Wars. Which is where her pretending to be her brother was discovered) to, and quoting Serbia section of their website devoted to her.
"During the WWII she organized an infirmary where she gave first aid to Partisans and Chetniks. That is the reason why the Police beat her bloody in front of her own children and then took her to the concentration camp located on Banjica, where she was supposed to be shot to death. When after ten months a German general and camp commander found out who she was, he released Milunka with all the military honors."

She was allegedly not found out to be a women until she was sent to a field hospital. She was willing to stand in front of her commanding officer till he decided to grant her request to return to the front as a Soildger, not a nurse like he he originally wanted to put her.

Information about her is hard to come by at least it is here in the states she was supposedly invited by Hitler meet with him I guess if my history remote brood is correct and she turned him down she had an opportunity to live in Paris with a pension from the fridge she turned it down she allegedly adopted several children and she basically died penniless I don't know how much of that is accurate. But that's what I remember reading
@@themetalmuse She served in 3 wars, first and second Balkan war and in WW1. That was in first Balkan war where she disguised herself in to a man to replace her brother who was sick and would die. When she was wounded doctors saw that she was a women and reported her to the commanding officer, at the time women could only serve as nurses at the battlefield. Officer wanted for Milunka to become a nurse, she refused and pleaded him to allow her to be a soldier, he said that he will think about it. She then said that she will not move until he gives her an answer, and after around 2 hours when officer saw her resolve he decided to allow her to fight. After that she was accepted as regular soldier and no longer had to hide that she was a women. Later she even made it to the elite regiment of Serbian army.
@@pontiacfan76 After Nazi's occupied Serbia she was invited by Nazi officers and puppet government to some kind of reception or something like that, she refused and was sent to concentration camp. She had 4 of her own children and more then 10 adopted children and she helped to school many more. She worked at a bank as a cleaning lady because she didn't know how to write. She wasn't really penniless but she was poor when she died. And yes, France offered her a pension and a place to live in Paris and she did turned that down.

She was regular soldier in balkan wars in 1912. In 1914 she was in elite serbian unit. In todays terms she was special force soldier of serbian army. There is a story when french army general visited them on frontline he was surprised how many hand grenades they had and asked who is the best - they answered it is Milunka. They had a bet that he will give them case of french cognac if she can hit one bottle at 30m distance with grenade. She won the bet.

She took her brothers draft and dressed like him. After finding out she was a woman the high command wanted to send her home. However, her skills and actions proved her to be their best soldier. So they agreed to let her back in, and sent her to the special forces regiment.

I don't think that's true because it makes no sense in Serbian. I am not sure, but I don't think Milunka spoke any other language. I am pretty sure she didn't know how to write. But anyhow Serbian expression for no man's land is "nicija zemlja" and direct translation of that would be something like nobody's land, no gender involved.

They are the history teachers we all need.
Milunka Savić was born in 1889, in the village of Koprivnica, near Novi Pazar, in Serbia.
In 1912, her brother who was ill with tuberculosis received call-up papers for mobilization for the First Balkan War. She chose to go in his place-cutting her hair and donning men's clothes and joining the Serbian army.
She quickly saw combat and received her first medal and was promoted to corporal in the Battle of Bregalnica. Engaged in battle, she sustained wounds and it was only then, when recovering from her injuries in hospital, that her true gender was revealed, much to the surprise of the attending physicians.
Milunka Savić Died on October 5th 1973 at the age of 81.

@The Metal Muse to answer your question unlike most other countries during ww1 Serbia didn't actually explicitly ban women from serving but most weren't interested and the few that wanted would usually be accepted as long as the officers saw that they are committed to this... Some of the most famous women who had served was ofc Milunka Savich (she actually went in disguised as a man); Sofija Jovanovich (AKA SOFRONIJE) who was the only woman accepted into the most elite units of Chetniks, Zhivana Terzich (AKA Amazonian of Drina) also a gurelia warfare, Mara Petrovich quite brave and worked for the intelligence, Vasilija Vukotich of Montenegro who participated in the "Bloody Christmass" battle, Darinka Grujich Radovich and Flora Sends an English woman... The topics are broad and there's a lot of info but I don't believe there is much information in English to be found.... I've a few books on Milunka herself and a short one about the most famous women in the Serbian military WW1..

she enlisted as a man as mentioned was wounded in combat, when found out she had been injured and when treated her secret revealed. her CO offered her a transfer to the nurses but she refused and stood at attention for an hour, the higher ups recognising her skill as a fighter honored her by allowing her to continue fighting. what isn't mentioned her is that she actually went on to serve in the serbian special forces, an amazing woman.

After the war, she lived in extreme poverty and worked as a cleaner. She got married after the war but later divorced. She had one daughter of her own, and she raised and educated 30 orphaned children. The boy she helped with his education (the boy who was the son of a Bulgarian soldier captured by Milunka during the war) ended up marrying her daughter.
The story of this brave woman reflects exceptional courage, compassion, and generosity. Her act serves as an example of true humanism, showing that people can transcend the divisions of war and find common humanity. It is an inspiring tale that reminds us of the importance of empathy and helping others, even in the toughest times. Milunka Savić remains a significant figure not only because of her military feats, but also due to her exceptional human dignity and compassion.

The fact these guys go to the trouble of making sure who/what they sing about is as accurate as possible. The fact the subject of a lot of thier music comes from suggestions of the fans. Is probably why a lot of fan feel a connection to the band.

@@themetalmuse It doesn't stop there. Her life was more interesting than anything Hollywood is able to conjure.
At battle of Gorničevo (1916.) she quickly realised that Bulgarian troops were heavily intoxicated on alcohol by their command. She ordered her troops to cease fire and single handedly crossed the no-mans land and made a platoon of Bulgarians to surrender.
One Bulgarian NCO involved there, had a son. Long time after the WWI his son wanted to go to Belgrade University to study. His father told him to seek Milunka Savić. The boy did so, and she offered him to stay at her house. Eventually he fell in love with her daughter and became her son in law in due course.

For the past 50 years the western nations (by that I refer mostly to US) were trying to vilanise Serbian people through media and were neglecting their troumendous contribution to end the great war in order to justify in the eye of the public the crimes they have commited in the Balkans such as NATO bombing Serbia completely ilegaly in the 90's. Most Balkan countries tradicionaly have strong ties with Russia there for in order to establish their foot in Balkan península west had to destroy the integrity of Serbia first. If the interests of Serbia as country were more aligned with the western agenda I assure you there would be like a dozen of movies about her and at least one Disney movie. Hope that helps.

Otherwise, the Kolubara region has given countless heroes. Otherwise, the famous Iron Regiment is from the town of Prokuplje near Nis.

In historical reading books, war diaries, and even adventure novels, the main characters are men, and the two heroines of the Serbian army in the First World War showed that courage, determination and the willingness to go into the unknown - also adorn women.
