    The need or desire to record to tape made us better, well rounded engineers.

    Appreciate that you acknowledge the importance of sharing knowledge as a means to preservation. So much knowledge should not be kept behind closed doors, and you're making an intentional choice to share. So cool!

    Thanks for documenting the lost art of calibration.. Im sure future engineers will appreciate the knowledge being uploaded.

    Excellent demonstration. I wish I had a nickel for every MCI, Studer, and Ampex machine I have calibrated over the years.

    Although I don't own an MCI JH-24 the principles and methods are similar for my machine (Tascam 58) and I appreciate this. I would say any/all follow-up videos would be welcome.

      I love tape. How did you learn how to work on the MCI?

    • @RiotHomeRecording
      @RiotHomeRecording  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Yes, I could imagine the process is very similar across different makes.
      Thank you!

      Lots of research, searching forums, Facebook groups, talking to people sharing ideas. The internet is a powerful place that can be used for good!
      Thank you

    I was pretty surprised my 4-tone MRL tape didn't come with leader, and was heads out. I fixed both of those things, and put some splices and leader in between some of the more used sections.

    Absolutely love your dedication to this. I'm always learn something.
    I have a 24-track JH16. Any good references to find out the main differences between the JH16 and 24?
    Keep em coming!

    Old technology is the best cure for ADHD, I can see with how fast my mac is sometimes I get some ADHD symptoms, when I see tape, 4000E system programmation you can't be over stimulated !

      Agreed! This old technology was and still is amazing for its time.

    Very interesting. I am an analogue man and can't stand digital. This is the art of recording. Digital= fake sound, negative physiological responses, including stress, unconscious hatred , muscle loss, it's bad for the brain. I could go on,. This is my subject and I love it. Thanks for this.

      You’re welcome and thanks for stopping by!
      I can tell you from experience when I have a band in tracking to tape it is a completely different experience from tracking digital.
      There’s more excitement and enthusiasm from the band, because playback sounds amazing! And there’s no latency.
      They’re actually listening to their music with their ears not watching the DAW with their eyes.
      It’s a different experience!

    Hey! great video love your stuff! I also own a JH24 about to start a full recap. wondering if you have noticed any improvements on the recapped channels? cheers Josh

    • @RiotHomeRecording
      @RiotHomeRecording  Před 6 měsíci +3

      Thank you Josh, I really appreciate you.
      Recapping my JH-24 made significant improvements and it was noticeable. Not only did it take care of a couple gremlins I was trying to troubleshoot. The performance of the machine was noticeably better. If I didn’t use my machine for a couple months and turned it on to calibrate for a new session. I noticed it didn’t hardly sway out of calibration like it did before the recap.
      I recommend doing your transport cards first.
      The motherboard, phase lock loop board, lamp driver, logic board, etc.. then move on to the back panel vertical PC’s that all the audio cards plug into. Then do the tedious task of the audio cards. Some caps on the audio cards are non polarized. I might have notes on what cap values I ordered I don’t mind searching for if it will help you. I ordered most from Digikey.
      Also, Mara now has all new transport cards as direct replacements for JH-24’s. This is amazing! I want to buy a full set! Even tho I already have spares of each transport card.
      Recapping made a noticeable improvement on both my tape machine and console.
      My email is voltiac@yahoo.com
      Hope this helps.
      Steve

    Aren't the graphics on the 10kHz and 100Hz hi shelf and low shelf icons?

  • @cnymarks
    @cnymarks Před měsícem

    I don’t think those are arrows, I believe they are high pass and low pass filter/eq curve icons
