The film will pay off. I saw it last night and I can promise you that the sheer amount of shock throughout the work will draw people in to witness it themselves. The sound design, the cinematography, the nonpartisan approach to the world, it all mixes incredibly well and it a rewarding watch just on a technical basis alone.
Let's hope so, but some awesome movies, like Blade Runner 2049, didn't manage to get the BO they deserved. Still, fingers crossed.
Yes! The sound design forced you to take in the emotions of the scene and REALLY think about what was happening. Absolute banger of a movie. It terrifying to think these acts are being performed everyday just in other countries...
Cinematography? Every shot was bland cookie cutter footage 😂 sound design was clean though ngl
Like what? After watching the movie I haven’t seen anything “shocking” it’s literally just…. War in the US….
Actually non-partisan? I somewhat doubt that
Tight script, *great* editing, solid VO; you're punching wav above your subscriber weight, happy to find your work!
That's mighty kind of ya. ♥️
The video also had a great thumbnail O_o
The final fight was some of the best military combat I’ve seen in any movie
I really enjoyed the movie but I thought “why not throw a grenade” every scene
The White House raid scene goes unreasonably hard
One small thing to notes is that the movie was shoot with unconventional cameras (DJI Ronnin 4D) and that has made alot of buzz around it in the film nerd circles! So that's another thing it has going for it.
I loved this movie and this is a great video!! My friend sent it to me after we watched the movie last night and it has sparked some discussion between us about the merits and problematic elements of war photography (is it explotative/needlessly dangerous or a dignified sacrifice of comfort?).
I think the best thing this movie does is show how modern war would look on American soil. America has essentially exported its wars to small countries across the globle for more than half a century now, so placing the kind of violence we inflict/support on other countries into settings familar to American viewers puts modern geopolitical events into a particular kind of context I hadn't considered before.
I'm not convinced that A24 can handle a big-budget action movie. Their strength is in character-driven stories, not explosions and special effects, although everything everywhere was pretty epic.
Spring Breakers back in the day did have some intense action sequences that felt very Grand Theft Auto esque.
Both Dream Scenario and Beau is Afraid had gorgeous intense action sequences, including explosions.
I haven't seen all A24's movies nor remember them all vidly, but I think there is a lot of talented people at A24 and plenty of talented people that are happy to work with A24.
Genre is just a set of expectations, and with a big budget and a solid team, action can be done. It can't be worse than Michael Bay, and look at how many nonsensical action sequences he directed
It was a good movie tho
I promise you Civil War was the best movie I’ve seen this year- I just watched it tonight.
It’s Alex Garland, guy is a visionary especially when it comes to dystopian / apocalyptic settings
Your logic makes sense, but this movie defies it…it’s really good
I worked as a writing consultant for how Seccessionists think. Especially considering I am one. I feel the Great Lakes states should be their own nation, that being said, prepare for a VERY accurate portrayal of 21st century, industrialized civil war.
I'm a big Alex Garland fan, and his only real misstep for me was Men (I really, deeply, did not like that movie). So I'm excited to see anything new he's up to.
wow, less than 1k subs and the quality is amazing. Can't wait for more! Finally a new channel to watch out for new content from!
well, you see, we’d treat journalist like heroes if they acted like heroes
I was so beyond disappointed in Garland’s last release, Men. That story was a cartoon mallet that hit audiences over the head with the desired message and themes, so it left nothing up to the audience themselves. It was a shallow depiction of tough themes, and I’m worried this movie will continue that trend. I cannot imagine this story being told in an engaging or interesting way due to Garland’s approaches that don’t trust audiences to understand nuance or things not overly stated. However, I did find Ex Machina a little more subtle with its messaging, so I would love for Garland to prove me wrong. I will not be rushing to theaters to watch this one though
No wonder A24 did not mention "MEN" when in the trailer when advertising him as "the writer of"
i really wouldn't hold artists too tightly to any of their work that doesn't strike the landing. creating stories is fuckin hard and, frankly, i think it's incredible that so many good movies and tv shows exist. garland reminds me of early science fiction writers that are more intrigued by concepts and ideas than the meat of stories, if that makes any sense
@@eg4441 I guess I just think the meat of the story is an important aspect to land when you’re attempting to broach a controversial, political, or hot-button issue. Since Men failed to do that, I don’t have faith in Garland to produce a worthwhile movie. I hope to be proved wrong, but I will not be spending money on seeing it in theaters.
Okay, well you were wrong about that, soooo
@@remydixonI very much disagree lol, the messaging here was sooooo on the nose and the dialogue needed like 4 more drafts
Saw it last night and I thought it was an absolute banger. Easiest 5 star letterboxd rating for a new film in a long time.
Honestly great video, and channel as a whole. Just went though and watched all the videos. You should do a breakdown of the results. Like a follow up on how successful the movie ends up. But yeah great work, keep it up.
That's mighty generous of you, thank you. We also publish a biweekly newsletter that reflects on the box office performance of titles, specifically highlighting areas where marketing for a film succeeded or failed. You can find a link to the newsletter on FanBox_HQ's Twitter or FanBox LinkedIn page. These pieces are a bit more industry-focused and less entertaining, but we're hoping to start creating fun videos on these topics too. Your comment is incredibly motivating.
the amount of bloody visual puns in this. Magical. You think just like me.
I actually saw a couple people get up and leave the theater during this movie. I guess they felt like they were bait and switched 🤷
This is really interesting. According to our research, Everything Everywhere All at Once had the highest number of walk outs of 2022.
How about you? Was the movie what you expected or "bait and switch"?
Bait and switch how? I must admit I don't know what direction this movie heads in
Yeah, almost everyone in the theater complained after the film ended
Well its kinda hard to tell now, since yesterday has divided buyers that this movie is good or boring, which personally i thought it was a good movie, a choice i made this year that worth it. A good factor that this movie has it's release date, because it has the best year and the best month. Many people have already seen the big budget movies in March, so that will push people to see the smaller to medium size movies this month and there is no major competition for civil war until may 3 when the fall guy comes out. Next will, the movie will come out in some overseas markets and if the movies keeping doing well in nternational, then maybe it'll be release in more overseas markets which will boost the box office even more. I have a good feeling that it will do well or least moderately decent since it only needs 125m to break even. Im glad this first a24 movie i saw in the theater, since i live in a small town, because a lot of thier movies are truley something else and better than most flims that come out today because they're are so repetitive, boring, and basic. So i think this gamble will pay off and a24 will start changing the movie industry.
Even though I didn't care who starred in Civil War. It's just the concept of what a modern day civil war might look like on film. Got me interested in seeing this film. I only knew about this movie two weeks ago, because of some random facebook ad from someone's movie theater that's not in the same state that I'm in, that was promoting the movie.
Definitely assumed I was watching a much larger channel until I went to sub and realized that you only had 306 subscribers.
I'm calling it now, you'll be at 10 000 within 3 months
Thanks for the verbal high-five! Our ego is now doing a happy dance. 🎉
@@Fanbox.Popcorn and 100k 9 months after that ;)
I didn't know who Garland was, but I love his movies! If this is from the same guy who did Ex Machina, I'm in.
I saw this movie last night, I can’t imagine that they don’t make their money back. I could be incredibly wrong tho
This is hardly a gamble, from the marketing and social media discussion alone it's a guaranteed hit.
Coming of age road trip movie. It's close to genius.
This is such a fantastic way to position the narrative.
@@Fanbox.Popcorn MAJOR SPOILER: in the moment that Jesse "comes of age" she loses her "humanity" at the exact same time as Lee regains hers (refer to earlier statement about shooting Jesse's death). Fucking wiiiild.
You had some great perspectives and honestly really amazing use of research. With so many trying to flex their film studies skills this is way more interesting ha
Much appreciated!
I loved the movie but the theater was absolutely empty when me and my friends went, only like 5 other people showed up 😢
The cinema I went to was just me, my girlfriend and her mate and this was on a Friday...but it is a fairly small local cinema but still
This is great, really helpful for research.
Number 1,000 congrats bro
Beau is Afraid was tits though. Everyone needs to see that one.
It’s a great fucking movie, go watch it!!!
I thought it was good. It is what I expected, in a great way.
I wanted more DC destruction, but a solid mid budget movie. Worth the watch.
I like the editing big man
I’m definitely planning on seeing this
It's A24 of course they will. They've built such a reputation that people will instantly watch a movie associated with them
If you look at the BO numbers, that doesn't seem to be the case, 8 out of 10 (not including this one) of their movies were flops.
10:39 😅
great video, very professional, gives me "sideways" vibes. So glad CZcams pushed some small channels recently
Thank you kind sir 🧐🎩🤌
2:42 The roles are reversed. Danny Boye directed the movie, with Garland bringing him in.
You mention a lot about the casts fan base and how some are not frequent movie goers and some are, where do you get this stats or are they just based on assumption?
We are a psychometric research firm that runs an interactive platform called Fanbox. Within Fanbox, Popcorn is the specific community where movie fans and filmmakers can connect directly. Our mission is to amplify the voice of fans and ensure their feedback has a meaningful impact on studios' decision making..
While we do occasionally conduct proprietary research commissioned by studios, these projects are entirely separate from our public-facing initiatives. Any content we share openly, such as on our CZcams channel, is wholly independent and unrelated to our studio collaborations.
We're still pretty new, but our big goal is to help make the movie industry better by putting the audience front and center. We think getting fans more involved in the process is the key to making really great films.
So yeah, that's the gist of what we do! We're all about using our research skills to give movie lovers a real voice in shaping the films they watch. If you want to know more, just give us a shout - or visit fanbox.love

Amazing video
Insanely good quality content from a smaller content creator. I subbed.
Love the video it will watch it tomorrow
Loved the movie, amazing content btw!

Excellent video, very well researched and well spoken. I would love to see a video on the decline of movie theaters. It is a huge worry growing in the film community.
What are your sources for the crazy amount of stuff you say as fact?

0:17 Decades later, the embarrassing video still resurfaces. Imagine if it were you.
You knew the movie was unrealistic when the fighting from the civs vs the us gov was more than 15 mins also the idea that wouldnt be 90% of the armed forces vs a small band of rebels is quite laughable clearly whoever wrote this movie knows jack of all dick about the military or how uninterested and unedfected by internal / civilian polotics it actually is
Me, a Texan seeing that we’re denied our legendary battle against California:😢
"never thought i'd die fighting side by side with an -elf- Californian" 🤣
Trust me, as a Californian, we were disappointed too. 😅
Was hoping for no spoilers, first 2 seconds brought major spoilers, thanks.
it's a terrible movie anyways
He is literally only showing trailer footage.
Eh it was okay
😳ABSTERGO AND CORPORATE
love Garland
28 Days Later still holds up.
movie is ok and 50 compaired to 350 is not a gamble
this channel is abt to blow up hard
Thanks for your help along the way and kind words. Hope you enjoy this video and the ones to come 😁
I saw the trailer in cinema and it instantly captivated me. Me n my buddies will be watching it soon
I like the style, nice video. But also I have to say, the political spectrum image at 7:23 might just be the most insane spectrum ive seen lol. Maybe its satire and im missing the point idk jsjsjs
Great story, very real feeling, and super loud. One of my fav movies now
Great movie, loved it. Though I feel the marketing wasnt very direct about it being a movie about journalists covering the civil war, and not a war movie. Having said that, when the action scenes do happen, my god is it a white knickle experience. 8.7/10
Just saw it in IMAX, and I'd also cite Devs as a standout Garland series. I liked the movie, and I hope this movie hits at least 80M
saying a24 "broke out" during the pandemic pained me. They're more than a decade old
True, they had some incredible films pre-pandemic and were already an "indi darling", but they only started to produce in 2016, only three years before pandemic. Meanwhile, their "main stream" appeal has come during the pandemic, as general audience were starved for content and A24 did not hold back, at least not as much as other studios did. While most major players took a hit, A24 grew.. However, there is no doubt that plenty of movie lovers already were fans of the studio well before then, but unfortunately not the average moviegoer.
On top of this heightened level of awareness, , there is their new evaluation, significant shift in their budgets towards higher end, contracts being signed with streaming providers, etc. We think it is fair to say that A24 is in a much, much, better place now than they were in 2018.
good job pal
Yes
Fingers crossed 🤞 Would love to see A24 have a big win.
I loved ex machina and annihilation but holy did this movie suck. the plot was insanely underwhelming/non existent. huge disappointment
Genuinely good movie
"Dave Reuben political commentator":😂😂 If a director doesn't have the courage to assume the danger is the right, he loses me.
Here before 1k
I like how California and Texas won in the end.
W vid
Im going to see it with my dad
Love the style of this video, i will say that the ai generated CZcams thumbnails does turn me off a little bit tho and i almost didn’t click because of it. Great work otherwise tho
Thanks for the tip. The thumbnail is composed of several AI generated posters created by peeps during our research events. Totally get why it would be off putting tho, thanks for clicking anyway.
@@Looneyboy i honestly wouldnt have guessed the video was ai but the description you can for sure tell.
Neither of those were ai generated, but hey you never know these days 🤷♂️
The soundtrack was the most half assed and tone deaf I have ever heard in my life. The whole movie felt so half assed
Sub'd.
I watched the movie I liked it. ❤
I'm giving my ticket money over.
Haven’t see it but the whole “journalists are the hero’s” thing is quite hilarious 🤣
it's more journalists as anti-heroes
@@devonjones1579 in a modern term sense, journalists just don’t do anything but serve a side. Example: when usd is invaded Ukraine I got it all of YT and Telegram and knew Horus before the main stream…. Same goes with most news right now, Ukraine, Isreal, and so on
Im going to watch it but can telll already its going to be some fencesitting nonsense.
Beau is Afraid was another A24 produced movie with a budget of around $35 million. In terms of box-office success, it was a huge bomb. But at least that was interesting and the director got to make some crazy choices. Civil War just looks so boring.
The do talk about it at 4:20, it seems like most of their "higher budget" movies bomb.
Also, don't know Texas c Cali Union seems pretty crazy lol
I watched it yesterday, it's definitely not boring, I'd say it was a pretty great movie, I'm not sure it will make it's money back through, I don't think enough people are interested in watching it
You sound like your fun to be around 😂😂😂
As if 'China Syndrome' had been unapologetically Pro Nuke sponsored just before Three Mile Island hits (half true), the timing of this film is... really... bad!
yo, your editing & clip art + random "morning-drive shock jock" sound effects (& delivery) have given me a headache.
Or you could just watch Civil War in the same day as Monkey Man
Outrage bait: the movie
Nope movie sucked
haven't watched the vid yet but my main opinion on it is that: by nature it panders to conservatives. i work with a lot of conservatives and heard about the movie from them, they where all hype as hell and saw it day one. the movie is literally their wet dream. all the other people in my life don't care and think it looks corny. because it does.
9 mins into the video: i still stand by what i said. in theory you can make a movie about how war is hell and journalists are bravan marv a fociuwvri alcolm dkfifdmalrnr BLAH BLAH BLAH, either it's boring or cool. if it's cool then it pandered to conservatives, it used divisive marketing, it got their money, it left them feeling fulfilled.
solid video, it's the first content online ive really seen about the movie, probably not the best place to talk about the stuff i'm talking about, should take it to reddit. one thing i will point out about the movies audience: the people in my life who frequent a24 movies do not care about this movie. the people who don't, do.
Thanks for sharing all your thoughts! And nah, this s really interesting to see, since we had a couple of comments calling this movie "leftist propaganda" and calling the president in the film "a clear Trump metaphor".
Also, really good observation regarding A24 fans. In our research, we didn't see the interest be much lower than for other titles, however we were expecting to see it overindex, considering that this film is such a big deal for A24.
It'll make money given the marketing blitz, subject matter, and the hype of the shill critics. But it's just a middling movie. Good cinematography and acting, but not particularly great. One again Hollywood overcorrects, going from blatantly partisan to supposedly neutral bland.
like what’s the point of making a civil war film that is devoid of politics?
still waiting for the plan on how to target female audiences…
Ohhhh so that’s why Dune 2 sucked so bad.
Bait
This seems very AI scripted and description
you sound like a bot
What makes you think that?
This movie fricken sucked
I am not really interested in a civil war movie that is not based on the reality of the moment which is crazier and more interesting than what is going on in the movie
So movies are only about money making. Got it?
Not necessarily, but it is a big part of it when it comes to the entertainment industry. When a studio invests $50 million or more into a project, recouping that investment is a crucial consideration, even before turning a profit.
Making money is unfortunately a necessity for films since artists and creators still have to pay the bills, including the costs of making their art. While artistic expression and appreciation are essential, there's nothing wrong with expecting a monetary return on your skills and craft.
Think of it this way: a painter still needs to sell paintings to afford more paint and canvases. Filmmaking is an art form, but it's also a business. Finding the balance between artistic integrity and financial viability is an ongoing challenge in the industry, but the latter does not always come at the cost of the former.
And if someone did want to spend a few million dollars on a passion project with no expectation of financial return, there are probably more effective ways to put that money to use than making a movie. Just saying!
because we all know that movies should be made purely for the love of the craft, with no pesky financial considerations whatsoever! 🙄 I'm sure the thousands of people involved in making a film are more than happy to work for free,
I mean, if you wanna make another movie, you gotta cover your costs...
Uh, yeah, that is part of it. How many independent movies have you funded and released?
This guy is so out of touch, you have no clue when it comes to your references
Are you talking about the references in the video? What was so out of touch?
worst movie I've ever seen
So they made a civil war movie in modern times and they made the protagonists journalists??? Who thought that was a good idea. CNN? 😂 dumb movie
Did you watch the movie?
Yes
