You can compare the image quality in the results and gallery pages of my reviews at cameralabs . com! I think you'll be verty happy with the 7D as an upgrade if yoiu're into shooting soports, but remember to buy a lens with fast USM autofocus.
It would if I had someone to help me! It's hard enough getting the framing right by yourself without also adjusting audio levels. But I do hope to improve them on future vidoes with a new microphone...

@akroisel If you only want the video and resolution, then get the 550D. If you also need tougher build, faster shooting, better viewfinder, better AF etc, then get the 7D. But whatever you buy, please do it through one of the partner stores at cameralabs . com to support me - thanks!

Whatching this again after 14yrs since 2010, This camera got me into photography but it was too expensive back in 2010 so this 2024 I got it and I'm so happy it still performs very well. Thank you Gordon.

Great review. Still relevant here in 2018. I really wish that all the camera manufacturers would offer a camera that only focuses on stills. The video options offered are nice but not my cup of tea. One buys a camera to take pictures not videos. I am looking for something in between my Canon 5D and my SL2. I have narrowed my search between the 80D, 7D, 7D mark II. I lean toward the older cameras because I like simplicity and I am always looking for a deal. As a retiree on a fixed income budget considerations zoom very large for me. I do miss the old film days. One was forced to concentrate on each and every shot hoping that you nailed it but not knowing it until you developed it. I don't miss those days as the skills learned still serve me well today. Thank you Gordon and keep on keeping on!
@videofxnoosa It's not available during composition as I recall. Not sure about playback - it is on the 550D / T2i, but only on the first frame.

Hi Gorden! I have to say your reviews are the best I've seen on CZcams.
I'm very impressed how the reviews are in depth and details.
Oh and may I have one suggestion? I really like to see how these DSLR AF perfromence in a low/ dim light situation. I believe that's a lot of the DSLR users want to know too, since now there're more and more users always taking their camera around them everyday.

@sairam6087 Were you shooting JPEG or RAW, and did you change any settings, like the noise reduction? I'd recommend joining the cameralabs forum and posting an example image in the Canon section so we can help diagnose it.

absolutely awesome review. This was more thorough of a review than any of the others that I have looked at. The camera has more awesome features than I was aware of and you really helped highlight the extent of the jello problem and how to minimize it. Awesome review!!

@yurigglutube You can use the EOS Utility to start and stop recording, BUT videos are only recorded to the internal card, not direct to your hard disk.
Hi,i purchased this camera a week ago with a 15-85mm f3.5-f5.3 lens.However when i set the AEB mode to take bracketed shots of a scene it only took one shot and the AEB setting in the LCD panel was flashing.Is there a fault on the camera or lens or am i doing something wrong?

I'm working on a project with a Creative Labs Vado, the Vado computer software lets me connect the camera to my computer and take up to 30 snapshots of a part of a video, and instantly converts the shots into a .png where I can retrieve them from my hard drive and do with them what i wish.
Does the 7D connect to the computer and allow me to do the same thing with taking a series of snapshots of the video's I shoot?

i have a question that nees major answering, i bought the canon eos 7d yesterday, and i try shooting, but there is this MAJOR fuzz or "noise" in the pictures....like there is some wierd FUZZ layer in the camera...when i zoom all the way in or when i unfocus the shot i can really tell and see the fuzz, its like light or middle colored GRAY....really annoying and i think it might be effecting my pictures....let me know please of you know.

I recently got a 7D and found that the images I take at ISOs 100 200 and 400 ( lower values) are very noisy. I had a Rebel Xs before this and had no such issues with it at these ISOs . People told me that the 7D takes really sharp images but Im not able to get any. Do you have any idea why this is happening?

@Anditworks Yes, the EOS Utility includes intervalometer features which would allow you to program a time-lapse sequence.
Oh, bytheway i also purchased a 100-400mm f4.5- 5.6 zoom lens for my 7d but still havent got a tripod! Im considering the Giottos MTL9251B with a MH 5011 head for Blackpool illuminations in september.Would this combination be adequate for the weight of those?
I might have missed what you said. But can you use the 5D Mark II's battery grip with the 7D?
Hi Gordon, I really enjoy watching your videos, very professional, articulate and thorough. I own a Canon 450D and contemplating upgrading to a 5D but can't yet afford it, then I realized that buying a 7D will be a great addition to my arsenal even after buying the 5D, the 7D is an excellent camera especially with the Digic 4 processor, it has a great solid body and is weather resistant. It reminds a bit of the 40D or the early 35mm A1 (which I still own) in the sense that they are timeless.

And whats the maximum ISO upto which the images are noise free?

I am thinking to upgrade to this camera. Would you suggest this model or some other model in the semi-professional/professional series cameras.
My priority is better quality at higher ISO's and high image quality overall.

The SET button turns when you rotate that rear wheel - same on every Canon DSLR which has the rear wheel.
@BelAirLongboard The video features and still photo quality are identical on the 550D and 7D. Only go for the 7D if you want faster shooting, better AF, tougher body etc. Don't forget the 600D which is essentially a 550D with an articulated screen - great for video. Hello, i bought the 7D in march and im generally very happy with it!However i want to do some short films with it and upload them to you tube but to my dismay, even for films of under a minute,its taking hours to upload them.Is there a way around this problem?Im not very technical but have heard that the films need compressing,how do i do this?Thanks in advance!
Is the pop-up flash plastic or metal like the rest of the camera?

Hi Gordon,im thinking about purchasing my first slr and am considering the 7d.Until now i have only used a panasonic lumix fz35.Would this camera be too big a step up for me?I would be willing to spend time learning more sophisticated functions but wondered if i could start taking photographs in basic autofocus,aperture and shutter prioritys from scratch?

Have you tried Using anti shake in Imovie with a video from it? if not do you have a downloadable sample so I can give it a try.

Hi Gordon Do you think I should buying this considering its been around for sometime now.
@JohnHFilms The 7D overheats for the following reasons:
- CF Card close to being full - Solution is to upgrade to larger storage.
- Weather sealing - No solution
- Internal battery discharging releases heat - Solution get a battery grip and use those batteries instead.
As you can see the reason for overheating is mostly when shooting video for a lengthy time, resulting in filling up the CF card, and battery discharge.

Hello I want to buy a Canon 7D, but the lens that comes with the body, here in Portugal, is the EF-S 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS. I read somewhere that it is a good lens, but for outdoor, general use. I want to ask what lens is good for indoors, low light pictures at night, for general use, landscapes and indoors without flash and telephoto. Someone talk me out of the EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM or EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM. Can you help me? Thanks a lot
