The Rise of Skywalker - How to Fail at Endgame | Anatomy Of A Failure

  • Half a decade into the Disney generation of Star Wars, we finally got the sequel trilogy conclusion with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker... and it's not very good. The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi might've had problems, but this film just craps the bed entirely. And while you could name a big batch of problems and also blame me for giving Disney and JJ Abrams some of the ideas that led to all this, the main weakness with this film lies in its nature of being a bad series conclusion. And in order to see what exactly is the issue, let's compare it to another recent very successful series conclusion in Marvel's MCU -- Avengers Endgame. Rise of Skywalker tried to copy paste a lot of same things from Endgame but still managed to fail at all of them. Let's see how to fail at Endgame.

The fact they did the same stuff you said in the last SW video is like an insult to your film criticism. Personally, you're not as wrong as comments say you are. The movie did it poorly and the only thing people would be remembering from this movie is the Nostalgia of it, which shouldn't be the only good thing of a Star Wars movie.

Oh, and Rey even though your original motivation was to find out who you are and where you came from, let ignore that for like 2 movies, then have a ancient space wizard that was killed by being thrown down a near bottomless pit on an exploding super-weapon which fell from space and crashed into one of Endor’s moons as a fiery wreck 40yrs ago but is still alive because reasons, vaguely hint that you’re his granddaughter without telling you diddly-squat about ever having a son or daughter to be your mom or dad, just for you to absently accept what the galaxy’s greatest manipulator tells you without even the Will of The Force as proof as just fact, only for none of it to matter because you want to identify as a Skywalker now having about as much of a connection to their name as you did Palpatine’s, and before you steal the Skywalker identity for yourself be sure to randomly kiss your probably-not-cousin? on the mouth to give his dying body one last thrill before Ben angst himself back to life in time for the next trilogy so we can milk this franchise all over again!

Jar Jar Abrams is a much worse hack than Joss Whedon. Whedon was given an impossible task, a task which never should have been placed in his lap but which was because WB is evil. He has the chops to create some thing original and moving -- but WB wanted an Avengers cut and paste.
Abrams just steals other people's ideas and turns them into the film equivalent of muzak. He put zero effort in, then cashed a check and moved on to the next vampiric feast upon someone else's creativity. Thanks, nepotism.

Hold on this movie DIDN'T shit on "The empire wasn't defeated" alone ... all 3 films took a big dump at that, and i think the one that deserves the blame the most is TFA because it just starts with a new empire that already took over most of the galaxy again. But to this movie's "credit" they did that stupid overcomplicated explanation about how Palpatine while still being the ruler of the galaxy, played dead, made the First Order to be his new empire, but whitout telling anyone he was there but replaced the public figure of the leader with Snoke who was controlled by him, fine don't reveal yourself, then Kylo kills Snoke and takes over the FO to the point that Palpatine has to bargain with him, then after Kylo couldn't kill Rey, Palps just replaces him with Pryde as the new leader and everyone in the FO accepts it without consequences, not to mention Pryde even says the emperor always had allies... why bother with the secrets and snoke and all that if he created the damn thing and also all the people in it would have followed his commands... again!... this movie is stupid.

The main issues that doomed the Disney trilogy:
    - no overarching concept, the whole thing was just made up as they go
    - 2 different directors who seemed to be wanting to outdo each other.
    - 1 of them reportedly didn't do his 'homework' on the franchise, rather than being more concerned with "subverting expectations"
All of this made it all disconnected and seemingly shitting on everything the fans loved.

That also wasn't a limitation for the books: Palpatine's body looked decrepit because his extensive dark-side use had physical ramifications, a la E=mc^2; the physical life powered the Force, so he recharged his Force batteries by replacing his own body, and at all times he was the perp and not the victim.

Three ways you could've made a better sequel trilogy:
#1. Have a plan - while it's fine in principle to encourage diverse artistic talents to bring their own creative energy and angles to a Star Wars picture, you still need to ground those sometimes reckless impulses within a well-constructed and thorough narrative structure. It's pretty clear JJ abhors being pinned down in this way but it would've saved a lot of time, money and reputational trauma.
#2. Get the lead casting right - Daisy Ridley recently expressed surprise that her work in these films hasn't led to any other big offers. I can clear it up for her: it's because you can't act, Daisy. Fundamentally there's nothing wrong with the character of Rey as a central protagonist, at least as far as she's established in TFA. The big problem (aside from her development, which I'll get to) is the actress chosen to play her is so unbelievably badly cast, and posseses a screen presence that compares poorly with some of the background matte paintings from the original trilogy. With her Sloane Square accent, flawless, plump alabaster skin (despite 20 years spent scavenging in a desert wasteland) and soft physique, Daisy Ridley's Rey is every inch the pampered, privately educated English stage-school baby, and about as far from the tough, resourceful and resolute survivor we're clearly meant to take her for as it's possible to imagine. Adam Driver fares a little better (being a better actor generally), but his melodramaticly villainous Kylo Ren comes off mostly as a moody Millennial with impulse-control issues, and his attempts to inject emotional substance into the role are hampered by an apparent limit of only two or three facial expressions.
#3. Develop interesting characters and allow them to grow - although the Star Wars saga always took place against a cosmically huge narrative of intergalactic warfare, what made it work was not the vast spectacle but the way this broad canvas was merely the colourful backdrop for some intimately observed character studies. Even the prequels, despite their corny dialogue and notoriously terrible acting, depicted the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker with a surprising amount of depth. By casually trashing much of the earlier films' established tropes and presenting a 2-dimensional stereotype of a idealistic, pure and noble heroine who's naturally the greatest ever at everything she attempts, Rey is robbed of the rousing journey toward proficiency in force manipulation and personal enlightenment that we as an audience might reasonably expect, and her ability to overcome obstacles instantly and easily erases any sense of drama or suspense. After a while you realise nothing bad will ever happen to her, and everyone will always flock to her aid, because she's just so great, I guess. Both Luke and Anakin in their respective trilogies had to overcome multiple failures, defeats, even mutilation by light saber, and both struggled against the lure of the dark side (one unsuccessfully). Rey experiences no such struggles, and thus remains the exact same uncomplicated paragon in the last picture as in the first. Thus it's much harder to become invested in her, and her eventual, inevitable victory over her opposition lacks any kind of resonance. This an utter failure of narrative storytelling, and feels like an almost deliberate expression of contempt for the source material and its conventions, one in keeping with the lack of respect shown the original property by the Mouse House through all its now myriad exploitations of the Lucas IP.
Disney, if you're still watching, maybe think some of this over next time. Just a suggestion.

You're so right about Daisy god. The girl comes from a privileged well-off white family but acts like she's being treated unfairly. Idk how tf she got any jobs in this industry or graduated from acting school. She has the acting ability of a plank of wood. You'd think a character like Rey would be tanned or something, considering she's lived in the scorching desert ALL HER LIFE. And you're so right about Driver's performance as well! "His attempts to inject emotional substance into the role are hampered by an apparent limit of only two or three facial expressions." Even when mans was sad, he barely moved his face. Boyega and Isaac are excellent actors and should've had bigger roles than Rey.

10:00 showcases the whole problem with the whole sequel trilogy: Nothing anyone does carries any meaning as long as Rey is somewhere in the general vicinity because she could simply have done it faster and easier.
The core problem is that there is simply nothing that is in any way meaningful. Not even people dying has any meaning. Chewie dies, whoops, no, he's ok. We get arrested, whoops, no, we're free. We sink in quicksand, whoops, no, it just takes us to the next chapter.

LadyKraken one of my points when defending this movie is different peoples standards of writing. Star Wars never had perfect dialogue. Of course it’s all subjective but they’re known for that. As well as some inconsistencies like Luke and his relationship to his father and sister. So in your case I’d say this saga at least, wasn’t for you. As for Hux, again the people in the first order are selfish to the point of carelessness. It is really well done in the Vader Dark Visions comic book actually. Keeping in mind that it’s a fictional story and there’s lightsabers, they don’t try to make everything realistic? I might be using the wrong words here but it’s fantasy about the good side winning. With the bad side continually making mistakes. Due to fear, anger, selfishness. I’d say yes Hux wanted an army and to fight the resistance. However he is being belittled by Kylo. Especially after episode 8. The development with his character, he would rather see Kylo fail. If that means lose the war he probably doesn’t care. Kylo is an apprentice of a higher power. Like Vader. They are replaceable. In Star Wars, often are replaced.

How Rise of Skywalker did the "Portals" scene is honestly where I think they really should've just dropped the whole "Prequels are bad except when it conveniences us" shtick they kept going at ever since they bought the property. The scene is playing off like this is generations worth of fighters finally coming together to save the world like in Endgame. Problem is, we've been there with Spiderman, Bucky, Starlord, Black Panther, etc, so it brings out a big emotional response when they're utilized for the end all be all of battles.
For Star Wars, we don't even know who these people flying in are, the movie is just relying on our emotional connection the OT because it's all Rebellion related (I know it's the Resistance, but they're just the Rebellion with a different coat of paint). I'm no expert to know the current whereabouts of all the things introduced in the Prequels in this sequel trilogy, but imagine if THEY came in. We see aliens, people, ships, and fighters from the age of the Republic coming in, to have a last chance to get back at Palpatine for all the manipulation and deception he has done that led them to their downfall. We were there when it happened, and like it or not, Disney, people LOVED that era, so it would be emotional to see them return and officially see ALL generations come together to end this long-lasting reign of terror.
But nah, you need to love the Rebellion and only the Rebellion, so we must force it all down your throat, even if this is supposed to be a finale to 9 damn chapters of a saga. Did I say 9? I'm sorry, I meant 6 chapters.

I never dove too deep into Star Wars lore, but I had a firm understanding of the themes and concepts presented by the original and prequel trilogy. It just... hurts to see that the sequel trilogy not only ignored those themes, but constantly contradicted them in this twisted mess of throwing shit at a wall to see what sticks.
To me, the entire trilogy felt like a weird fever dream, lazily moping about from one unoriginal concept to the next, pulling every punch and impact possible. I felt no attachments to any characters, I could literally feel the actors reading off the script that no amount of good acting could hide.
It’s almost offensive to me that after all the love and adoration I had built up for Star Wars throughout my childhood, Disney decided to spend 4 billion dollars on a trilogy with no roadmap or plan other than to fit as much merchandising opportunities as possible (which even that failed somehow, I don’t really see many toys and stuff for it)

This is one of the most biggest issues with TLJ or hell the entire Sequel Trilogy really because instead of slowly but gradually build up to this finale the two directors instead does nothing but waste time in writing stuff that feels completely self-indulgent.
For JJ it's mystery boxes and nostalgia pandering, for Rian it's nothing but "subverting expectations" that are extremely lackluster in execution, goes nowhere and ultimately feels like a waste of time that could have been used to develop Knights of Ren, other galaxies and how they perceive The First Order and whenever they should help The Resistance or not and Snoke who SHOULD have been the main villain of the trilogy instead of being haphazardly killed out of nowhere and replaced by Palpatine at the last minute. And all the while it was happening Disney and LucasArts barely gave a damn about how the two directors ideas either clashed and contradicted each others or how shallow and little sense they make, just as long as the movies made money in any way.
Although to be fair Rian at least managed to redeem himself with Knives Out which if anything shows how unsuited he was for a major, epic Hollywood blockbuster Star Wars movie type like The Sequel Trilogy and works better for films like Knives Out instead. Can't really say the same thing for JJ though who if anything has gotten worse over the years to the point that The Rise of Skywalker, his latest major work as of now, is a catastrophic mess in every way.

Another thing I've wondered recently: why were the characters so shocked about _Palpatine_ coming back? How many just inside the Empire were even aware of what Palpatine was and could do? We're talking about the man who fooled the Jedi Council _while working and living alongside them,_ right up until his final ascension. And even then, knowledge of his true identity was known to very few and he was able to twist the circumstances and victimize himself in the eyes of the Senate. Six people saw him wield a lightsaber - four of them died, the fifth became his apprentice, and the sixth went into exile. And, if I remember correctly, the only characters who saw Palpatine use the Force were Anakin, Mace, Yoda, and Luke. So far as I can tell, all anyone knew about the Emperor is that he ran the Empire and commanded Vader... the latter of which was the actual iron-fisted figurehead of Imperial might, by the way. He was the one leading boarding parties, executing officers, taking an active and eminently visible role in the violent excursions. Between Snoke's rise to power, and Palpatine or Vader returning... I feel like Vader's the one that would've had the galaxy quaking.
Which means the Emperor's return wasn't actually meant to shock the characters. Just us. It's Khan all over again. I can't stand Abrams.
EDIT: To provide an MCU parallel to what this Disney trilogy did, just imagine watching Iron Man, then The Avengers, and then Endgame (starting at the 5 Years Later point).

I am one of those that watches your videos and rarely comments but I would like to take the time now to tell you that I appreciate you taking the time to produce these videos and for taking the time to craft your skill and knowledge base. There are a lot of different breakdown videos out there but I connect with your style which is not emotionless but separates the elements of writing and story telling from all the distracting fluff, like peeling back the skin and seeing the written framework underneath. Once again, thank you for bringing your viewpoint to me and know that I am silent because I am quietly enjoying your work.

This conclusion was so lame that it wasn’t even impressively poor. It was so underwhelming that ‘character’ (lack thereof) moments happened without any element of risk or drama. I vaguely remember accepting the events in that final scene and seeing people step out of the shadows... In all fairness; the same was true of the royal guard, but then they literally existed to empathized to show how important the Emperor was. Kylo was alone for most of his scenes.

Just the idea that one single stormtrooper might ever, _ever_ pose a threat to these assholes is beyond absurd at this point... stormies in the sequel trilogy are nothing but cannon fodder for our plucky heroes to dispose of casually all while spouting shitty oneliners and making sure the audiences know there is no danger at all. So essentially like TCW droids (and that is a show for kids).
People may ridicule the stormtrooper aim from the OT all they like but there was an ever present sense of threat coming from them. Yes, they missed their shots but always _just_ barely and the characters never straight-out disrespected them. When the Endor squad design a plan to distract the four scouts guarding the door, you don't feel like they might as well just charge at them up-front and be finished without a scratch.

Here’s a fundamental difference between the two Portals scenes: in Rise, the cavalry arrives just after Poe gives up, in the moment when he essentially stops being a hero; in Endgame, the cavalry arrives as Cap is fully determined to face Thanos’ army alone with a broken shield. Imagine how hollow the Endgame Portals scene would feel if the portals opened just after Cap fell to his knees, or let his shield fall to the ground. But he never does. So Cap deserves the cavalry; Poe does not.

The return of that “old guy” from the original trilogy, Wedge Antilles, was also a huge letdown. Wedge was the Poe Dameron of the Rebellion Era, the best pilot they had besides son of the chosen one Luke Skywalker. He survived the Battle of Yavin, was the first snow speeder to take down a walker in the battle of Hoth, and survived and dealt critical damage to Deathstar 2 at the battle of Endor... and now he’s just a gunner for Lando with a few seconds of screen time?? He should have flown in an old X-Wing like a badass and taught Poe and thing or two... the dynamic between those two ace pilots could have been epic.

As much as I like Kylo confronting Han, I always felt that Kylo's character should have meet Anakin at the end of his dark side journey. It makes sense as Anakin is canonically a force ghost, so he could appear before Kylo, but it also challenges everything Kylo has based his beliefs around.
He believed that his grandfather was a powerful Sith who's mission to conquer the galaxy was left incomplete and he seeks to complete that goal. In reality, his grandfather was a Jedi who renounced the dark side and rose up to oppose a Sith lord and redeem himself whilst saving the galaxy and those he loves from a tyrannical dictator.
So far Kylo has used Vaders name to murder his father, has faced his uncle in a stand off that lead to his uncle dying, and his battle with Rey may have been the cause of his mothers death (I'm just assuming because Leia dies when Kylo is stabbed). It would have been powerful to see him come face to face with the ghost of Anakin Skywalker merged with Darth Vader. Anakin isn't ashamed of his role as Vader, he did terrible things but used those terrible things as a way to do what he was always destined to do, strike down the Lord of the Sith.
For Kylo to confront his idol, a man who redeemed himself and gave his life for his children and the people they loved, for Kylo to see him after having killed his parents and uncle, that would be a profound and tragic reality check. For Kylo to meet the man that he killed his father for and realise that it actually hurt his idol, that would break his perception of everything and show him that he was manipulated into following in the footsteps of Vader and would be a great way to set him on the path to redemption, the path Vader took that he was never told about.
Plus it would give Hayden Christiansen another shot at redeeming himself in the role for many people by letting him appear in a film that doesn't have prequel dialogue and direction.
