    Recipe
    1 tsp Linseed oil
1 TBSP Mineral Oil (Baby Oil)
2 tsp Beeswax melted (This is a change from the 1 TBSP)
    1 Stick Oil Pastel
    Directions
    Step 1.
Chop up the oil pastel into very small chunks (Mince)
    Step 2
Mix in the Mineral Oil and Linseed Oil into the Oil Pastel. Let it stand for at least an hour while mixing occasionally. You can't over mix. You can leave it longer than an hour. I have let it sit for a full day. It won't go bad. If it gets dry, just add a few extra drops of mineral oil. It should look like a liquid paste. Thinner than toothpaste, thicker than water.
    Step 3
Heat up about an inch of water to a boil. Using the bottom of a tin can (I use a soda can), place the mix into the can and then the can into the water. It will float and create a double boiler. Do not heat the mix directly on a flame. Put the heat down so the mix stays warm to slightly hot. Do not boil the mix. It should not be hot enough to burn you if spilled. This is a project for adults. Children need supervision. Make sure you use adequate ventilation. Do not cook the mix. Melt slowly and gently. Do not leave the pot alone while on the flame. It's no different from making candles. Use all the same precautions.
    Step 4
Melt down enough beeswax to add 2 tsps to each can. You can remelt and reuse the beeswax. Don't throw out the can.

Holy moly! I’ve got to get busy and make myself some of this stuff. I did order the ingredients however AMAZON does not have in stock right now the little tins that you got. They have some that are less for more which is what I ended up getting. Thank you so much for your experimenting, your time and your gift of the base paste to all of us. You are appreciated!💜

I love the paper that you cut because you can use those strips to test your media to see how it look on that particular paper.

NICE! You've invented a base paste AND a bleedthrough barrier! Now no matter what kind of sketchbook you have, it will be like a Crescent Rendr/ Canson The Wall/ etc!!!!

I guess they're worried about their coloring books. But tbh I don't pay attention to the other side unless it's a book like Klara Markova or Hannah Karlzon where it's double sided and I know I'm going to want to do both sides. You made me literally lol with, "I only make art on one side of the page, I don't give a flying who-ha what's happening on the other side." 🤣

Wow, that's amazing stuff. I think the wax base in the paste is what's protecting the paper, wax is used as a sealant in certain appliances, it's used a lot for protecting wood finish. You go girl! Love you my friend 🏵️

You just continue to have great tips, Lori. Love it. Question for you - is there a way to create a clear base paste to put down on a double sided coloring page so that I’d be able to use alcohol markers on it without the alcohol marker bleeding through? I have a number of coloring books that I’d love to be able to use alcohol markers in but I can’t because the pictures are all double sided. And the clear gesso’s I’ve tried don’t work too well with alcohol markers.

The principal behind your base paste is a wonderful idea. The problems that I see with it are two fold first of all mineral oil is not archival and so no matter what you see it with this is not going to hold up long term it's going to break down the paper. Secondly the mineral oil is leaving a ring of oil emanating from the colored area because mineral oil is not intended for this job. The wind seed oil is ideal and using soft pastel rather than oil pastel is also ideal. Your choice of wax is as far as I can tell utterly perfect if you could find something that is archival and will not seep out and damage your paper and pigment the way mineral oil does in place of it in your formula I would be quite interested to know. I don't just color I'm a professional artist and I can't use non-archival materials although the concept is amazing.

Thank you. This wasn't really designed for professional artists, but rather the hobby artist that has trouble with their hands. Most of the paper that colorists use are not archival in the first place. Did you know pastels are made with mineral oil. Mineral oil is also PH neutral which is way better than some of the other oils that are acid. The bees wax has protective properties so hopefully in 70 years my theory it's going to balance out is true. One person predicted 7 months it would change. I am accepting that challenge. I have already made some with Safflower oil and they work nicely also. Unfortunately Safflower oil is acetic.

Very beautiful. But I am so anxiously waiting to hear the recipe for the dry professional pastels that I can’t sit still and am just waiting with my stuff for your video. I think that they would need more oil and wax since there is so very little in them. And each brand is a bit different also. I have some Schminke , Unison, Girault and many brands. Some are like butter and my Rembrandt are more of a soft/ medium pastel. But I am here and awaiting your video patiently. I do use them for backgrounds in my colored pencil paintings so as to not use up those expensive pencils. But if a way were to be found to use them the other way that would be awesome. I suppose that they are equally as expensive in reality. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I appreciate it.

Makes sense, I use a light layer of black Prismacolor before using my FC Pit Artist pen for a black background. What happens to watercolour? Many of us love the painterly affect in our colouring books. Could you apply base paste with a waterbrush filled with OMS?

  • @melissascoloringandmulti-taski

I need me some of that base paste.

Hi Lori, wondering why I am getting oil stains with the base paste on the back of some of my Hanna Karlzon pages in my practice book. It only happened the first few practice times I used it but it was significant. I think I forgot to dab the spot and it sunk in but I haven't wanted to try again in a regular good coloring book. The results on my Spring Hill 67 lb/80 lb is amazing though. I might actually pull out my Blick's Illustrator (Copic dupe's) to see if they work. I gave them up because they bleed through.
