  • I threw away all the Colored Pencil Base Paste that had old experimental recipes and created a whole new 72 set. I discovered a lot of new things about the pigments. What works, what don't work. Come watch me experiment and create 4 backgrounds that are ready for colored pencil.

    Sofft Sponge Applicator amzn.to/3L0GQV6
    800 pointed cotton swabs amzn.to/3M0IY0E
    Recipe
    1 tsp Linseed oil
    1 TBSP Mineral Oil (Baby Oil)
    2 tsp Beeswax melted (This is a change from the 1 TBSP)
    1 Stick Oil Pastel
    Directions
    Step 1.
    Chop up the oil pastel into very small chunks (Mince)
    Step 2
    Mix in the Mineral Oil and Linseed Oil into the Oil Pastel. Let it stand for at least an hour while mixing occasionally. You can't over mix. You can leave it longer than an hour. I have let it sit for a full day. It won't go bad. If it gets dry, just add a few extra drops of mineral oil. It should look like a liquid paste. Thinner than toothpaste, thicker than water.
    Step 3
    Heat up about an inch of water to a boil. Using the bottom of a tin can (I use a soda can), place the mix into the can and then the can into the water. It will float and create a double boiler. Do not heat the mix directly on a flame. Put the heat down so the mix stays warm to slightly hot. Do not boil the mix. It should not be hot enough to burn you if spilled. This is a project for adults. Children need supervision. Make sure you use adequate ventilation. Do not cook the mix. Melt slowly and gently. Do not leave the pot alone while on the flame. It's no different from making candles. Use all the same precautions.
    Step 4
    Melt down enough beeswax to add 2 tsps to each can. You can remelt and reuse the beeswax. Don't throw out the can.

    On another channel (French channel) yesterday...I saw a base made with the Colors of the world crayola crayons. However a much more simple process was used to make this base using only the crayons and coconut oil. Also no cure time needed, the lay down of the base has the same look as your base and the best part is black actually comes out black! I thought I would bring this to your attention as you may be interested in this base as well! I won't of course mention the channel name out of respect and courtesy as I do not know if that is appropriate or not. I can email you if your interested. I thought it was impressive as no cure time, crayola crayon skin tone set is cheap but beautiful colors and much simpler process with less ingredients. I do love your demos and how you are applying your base paste and I am taking "notes." I look forward to your next video!

      I wouldn't use crayons. The wax is way too hard. It's also harder to use colored pencil over paraffin wax. It doesn't take marker well either. Too waxy.

    Hi Lori thank you so much for these wonderful videos. Will be making my base paste today. I've had both Mungyo Gallery 72 wooden box sets of their "standard" (lighter blue cover) and their Artist ones (darker cover) for over 7 years so they've both been around for some time. They are indeed different. I think the difference is that one is expected to be professional quality. They both work well however for using them as oil pastel sticks I do prefer the professional pastels over the standard.

    I didnt even realize these cure over time. I will have to dig down a little on some that are not pigmented enough, I don't know the names because I sorta lost track when I was melting them down. I have a blue one that is so weird, hard as a rock, and I have no idea why. I figure some mineral oil will soften it. There is a 72 set, that is what I got, but I am not sure it is in stock at the moment. Loving these especially for skin and background. I am experimenting this week with Satin Glazing for watercolor background and I like using base paste and then pencil so much better, so much less work.

      Before selling a new invention or product you must find out if the product is patentable, then do a patent search to see if a patent has already been granted (which can cost thousands). Beware of committing patent infringement. They will sue you to recoup any losses. Not sure of the legalities if you just sell instructions for a diy version like this since that can decrease the patent owners profits so maybe they have a basis for a lawsuit too. Always get knowledgeable legal advice before selling a product. Copyright laws do not apply.

      @@ColorMyWorld Please let me know which dry pastels you experiment with. The Rembrandt half sticks are considered professional for those who are concerned with that depending on their needs and the half sticks are considered soft but they are more medium, actually more mulling work than other brands but a great brand and excellent cost value and many use them for “the bones” of their pastel paintings. The pigmentation should be very high. You know it is so very interesting what you are doing because I was actually thinking that there had to be an easy way to get to a paste since colored pencils are oil paint and why wouldn’t someone try? Before my surgery I was really discussing it with my family who are artists but they were like”don’t waste your pastels”. You’re gutsy and in all my years of mulling you take the cake.

    • @jenniefrench1338
      @jenniefrench1338 Před 2 lety

      Interesting question because in other media like watercolor basically certain companies do the same colors and they slap another name brand on them. They are nice yet still considered student quality brands are known for that and Paul Reuben brand is no exception and other brands like Superior and so on. Very good question. I’m here with a massive amount of professional dry pastels and would love to know the recipe to make them into “professional” colored pencil base. I do detailed colored pencil art and because of commission work I would love to turn them into my favorite media. Maybe we will both get to find out. My thought is try a color that is close enough to another so that you can either mix it or do without it. The dry pastels are of every size and buttery to medium hardness so it might be a conundrum.

      @@jenniefrench1338 I am doing a q&A video. I'll put this in there. The soft pastel version is very hard to do and is much more involved. It's better you just keep the soft pastels and pick up a small set of oils. Go with Gallery or the Hobby Lobby brand. Those are the same. Paul Reuben work but are not reliable as far as how they react once melted. They were OK but just OK.

    • @ColorMyWorld
      @ColorMyWorld  Před 2 lety +1

      I use refined. The oil would make it softer. What other oils did you use and how much wax? The wax makes it harder. The less wax the softer it gets but don't go down to a tsp. That's not enough. I use 2 for pencil and 1 and 1/4 to a half for the marker.

My mixtures of oil pastel chips (Gallery), mineral oil & linseed oil ("Grumbacher Linseed Medium for Oil Paintings" 100% linseed oil) sat for a few days in my studio (my week suddenly got really busy). When I tried to stir up the pastels/oils mixtures (with new wood Popsicle sticks) the pastels were still firm, barely mixing. I had to heat them up to melt the oil pastels so they would finally mix with the oils & melted wax. I only did a few of these before giving up. I poured off the oils & kept the pastel chips, so I can try again with refined linseed oil (& mineral oil & bee's wax). Thanks so much for your help, Lori.
