Making a Cherry Wood Table from a Log

- From the cherry tree to a live edge, breadboard end, table. Just a quick video show the process from start to finish. A note about the breadboard ends: only the middle tennons are glued and the mortises toward the outside are large to allow for wood movement, mostly shrinkage in this case as the wood still has a lot of moisture. I made a similar type table out of slab Elm. Yes I said Elm . My neighbor owns a sawmill and when I told him I wanted some live-edge wood to build a dining room table he said I have something that you won't believe. He told me he cut this and stored this in his Loft back in the late 60s to make a dining room table for himself and his family. He said now that they're all gone so is the dream of the table so you take it and run with it and make something gorgeous. I said what do I owe you and he said dinner on the new table when it's done. It turned out beautiful and it's a real heirloom. Unfortunately he only had time enough for two dinners before he passed away but at least he got to enjoy the table also . I miss ya Mr. J . I love the way you left all your imperfections in the wood. I hate when they are all taken out.I love seeing it in its natural state so much nicer this is defiantly my type of table... wonderful job really beautiful....

Imperfections look great but they have a downside. I left most of them in mine when I built my table and now the voids are an area that you need to clean with a Q-tip. But they look cool.

Jesse Seidel they sell something called tung oil at home depot, but it's mostly poly. I like using pure tung oil by miguires

You made it look so easy I made my first dinning room table out of cherry just like you but I didn't put a bread board like you did I should of Done that but I had limited resources. But I under sold my self sold it for 900 and I put dovetails and filed a few cracks with epoxy and carbon dust making it look a glossy black

NICE!!!!!! I am trying to build a table out of a fallen oak tree, and a door also....
Cherry is such an excellent wood to make furniture with. The only thing I would have done different is mortise and tenon to hold the top. The central brace is clever.

Great work! I wish you had not sped up (is that a word?) the video so much. We can hardly appreciate its true merit. On the other hand, rather than the music you could explain a little about mortises, tenons, etc., for those of us less skilled, and in the process avoid being criticized. You can be really proud of the nice furniture you are making. Congratulations!
