How to Stop AVOIDING What You Worry About | Dr. Rami Nader

  • Intolerance of uncertainty is like a psychological allergy to uncertainty. For some people who are more intolerant of uncertainty, all it takes is for there to be just a little bit of uncertainty in a situation and it can cause a big emotional reaction for that person - they get anxious, worried and overwhelmed. Whereas, for someone who is not intolerant of uncertainty, they can be in the exact same situation and not feel anxious at all. This video discusses a common manifestation of intolerance of uncertainty, specifically avoidance. By avoiding things that we are worrying about, we create a temporary state of certainty, in this moment. However, that comes at great cost, because if we always avoids things that we are uncertain about, our life becomes a lot smaller and much more constrained. Therefore, it’s important to understand how to overcome avoidance as a way of overcoming intolerance of uncertainty and building tolerance for uncertainty. You do this in two ways: a) Creating tolerating uncertainty experiments in which you intentionally do exposure to what you have been avoiding; and b) Taking advantage of naturally occurring opportunities to tolerate uncertainty by frequently reflecting on the following question, “If I were more tolerant of uncertainty, what would I do in this situation?” By building tolerance for uncertainty through reducing avoidance, you will find that you are a lot freer, more spontaneous and less anxious.

I hope you have even just the slightest idea of how much you’re helping us all here. Even when we have our own therapists, sometimes it just gets so tough that you need to listen to someone making sense , and listen to them right away. ❤

Things that I avoid - resolving conflict, asserting my needs, self advocating, self disclosing my feelings & more. I think it has a lot to do with my mother. Think she’s a narcissist. I find it hard to do these things with people that aren’t safe. I struggle doing this with my therapist.

Another great video. I have been diagnosed with Avoidant Personality Disorder. Avoiding avoidance has been a tough gig through life. My coping strategies have been pretty draining at times, keeping a lot of past data in my head. Getting into my late fifties has been a help, funnily enough: life slowing down yet becoming richer somehow.

Sometimes these conditions are caused by many different factors. The key isn't to figure out what caused it, but more to focus on what's keeping it going.

Hi Lynda - I'm not sure I understand your question, because anxiety is an emotion. People manage anxiety by addressing the stressor or problem that's causing the anxiety and/or changing negative thinking and behavior patterns that are contributing to anxiety.
