Around 2009, Costco's CEO was approached by an employee suggesting they raise the price of the hot dog to cut costs. The CEO responded with these actual words:
"If you raise the effing hot dog, I will kill you. Figure it out."
They instead switched from their long-time supplier to building their own dedicated hot dog factories. And thus, the hot dog stayed at $1.50.
I knew bought their own chicken farms to keep the cost of the $5 rotisserie chicken down, but I didn't know they had their own hot dogs factory too!

My sister has a membership and I go with her about once a month. I'm single so it's more than what I need, but I love the store. On our way out on our last trip, the guy checking carts on the way out stopped us when he saw that we had picked up one pack of muffins because they were buy one-get one free and within 30 seconds a second worker actually showed up with another pack of muffins for us. Great store, awesome service.
That’s because they pay their workers well and have good benefits.
@tylertyler82 100% I worked at Costco throughout my last 2 years of college and not only did I feel ligitimately cared about by the company (they mailed me a card on my birthday, they commented on our work and how good we were doing, if I was struggling with a pallet or job not only did I not feel bad asking for help but it felt like we were rewarded for it.) not only that but the fact that overtime is 100% optional, they didn't ask us to stay or cover but instead had a system of we write in the shifts we want so we never had to say no to a boss. Just beat work experience I've ever had. I hope I find a job with my degree with half as much soul.

Yo Ian, my Grandma loves Costco so much she goes like twice a week. Her trick for all the frozen food boxes was, all the ones with bags, cut the cooking instructions off the box and staple them to the bag so you can throw the boxes away. saves tons of freezer space.
My mum does a similar trick, but just cuts off the cooking instructions, rolls up the bag, and rubber bands them together. I do it as well, it’s great on items like chicken fingers that slowly get depleted and therefore can take up less and less space as you eat them.
your grandma is a genius and a blessing to this earth

This video is oddly nostalgic. Simple narrative, easy edits, a dude doing a random thing at his leisure, all of which reminds me of the old youtube before creators really started gaming the system.

@@mattymclaughlin5900 Take the "greenscreen" edits for example. See how they're kinda messy?
And the transparency cuts?
I agree 100%.
This is the first video i watched from this channel and I already love how its made and the creator's attitude.
The trick with frozen Costco stuff is to ditch the boxes (where applicable). Get your scissors out and cut the cooking instructions off the back (cut it so as to make a little rectangular card). Grab a pen and write the name of the product on the back side of the card. Stash them all in a designated drawer, or on the fridge with magnets.
For large bags, I personally use a Foodsaver for what is, IMO, its best yet least-advertised feature: the fact that it can reseal most plastic or foil food bags. I don't vacuum-pack when I'm resealing per se, but I do use the vacuum function to remove almost all the air before sealing. It's easier & more effective than pushing the air out & then ziplocking, and overall provides decent freezer-space savings. It also makes sense for huge Costco bags (like the potstickers) where the extra length of the bag helps offset the fact that you have to trim a little off to reopen it each time.
yes this, i feel like a lot of the wholesale stuff come in huge boxes but you can easily just separate them.
I'm happy for Ian. He's moved up in life and got himself a nice refrigerator and can enjoy a whole freezer full of foo...I mean new video review fodder.

You can freeze bread until you'll use it. Just take it out of the freezer and shake out any excess ice then set it out for about a day to thaw when you're ready to eat it. It doesn't end up soggy.
Or straight from the freezer to the toaster/toaster oven. I'm always surprised when people don't freeze their bread

For those who don’t know: you can freeze bread and it’ll last a long time. Just freeze when you first get it, and then defrost as needed. Even after it’s defrosted it stays good for over a week.
My family does the same with our milk. We go through it quick so we usually have 5 or 6 gallons frozen in our freezer along with the 2 in our refrigerator
And if the bread isn’t good for normal usage, just grind them up to use for breaded chicken or meatballs.

As a household of 2 (plus 2 dogs and a cat) we shop at Costco for frozen and nonperishable food the most. The big portions arent as much of a problem with that stuff, because they can last longer.
Dog food is good quality and great deal.
I’m a household of 2 with no pets, it seems like Costco products are a bit much. We try and buy in bulk but seems like a waste.
I would say buying dish soap, trash bags, sponges for kitchen etc are worth it at Costco.
Also Starbucks creamer 😆 gotta have it
Big shoutouts to the Trader Joe's orange chicken. Was making it for my family one Christmas Eve and got blasted with hot oil spit right in the eye. Good food. Good painful memories.
The Kirkland Signature chicken potpie is my favorite food of all time, and it's a costco exclusive. If for some reason you ever do a potpie episode, since I see potpies appear frequently in your videos, you've got to try one. Be warned, they're usually not available in the summer.
POT PIE SPECIAL 2
Believe it or not, the chicken from the leftover rotisserie chickens is used for the pot pies. They may be absolutely massive, but I completely agree. Insanely good.
I’ve always wanted to try it but they’re massively huge!

@@Wet-Milk I was speaking in general. He's made videos on Pike Place Market, The Westfield Southcenter Mall; all places that I've been to multiple times and have fond memories of. Costco's might be all over the place but it's founded and headquartered in Western Washington.
He needs to go to Winco!
Im genuinely a fan of costco. Even though I’m just cooking for my partner and I, the ability to freeze 2-3 weeks worth of food is great. Its also nice to raid all the free samples and get lunch after we’re done shopping.
This! It also can simplify meal prep for a few days, since you can just go have hot dogs for a dedicated couple of meals, maybe changing up the way you cook them but otherwise it's still hot dogs, and they're cheap while not being made cheaply. Same with things like the pork centerloin. It's got a nice bit of fat in with the meat, and you can cut it to roasts, steaks, or dice or shred it to any size as needed.
The food court is a crazy good deal too. 1.50 for a hot dog and drink. If i'm feeling hungry ill get a slice of pizza along with it. Bang, 3.50 and i probably won't finish it all, but cheaper than any fast food place. I go to Costco every Monday to stock up on certain things, and even if I don't need much I'll still go just to get a cheap lunch at the food court because I can.
It’s also apparently a great place to work!
@@liamsgreatbitgaming I’ve heard! Got a couple friends who are managers there and the benefits are great. Makes it easier for me to support a big corporation when they treat their employees well

The trick to frozen pizzas is to kick on the broiler for the last two minutes of the bake. It will caramelize the cheese and cup the peps.
Not all peps naturally cup up like the kind of peps you're talking about
I've had peps cup up and I've had peps not cup up
And let me tell you, you want your peps to cup up or you're gonna have a bad time
“Cup the peps” sounds like something a high school sports coach would tell a bunch of boys when discussing the importance of wearing safety gear for any rowdy behavior.
@@Froakadoke Disagree. Cuppy peps come from the ground sausage flowing into the casing through an undersized horn for the casing, which means that the meat ends up packed like a "U" shape, which means a strict horizontal slice has the cured meat and fat granulated in a "U" shape still while cooking, which results in it curling up. Directional heating, as with a pan, stone, steel, or broiler will exacerbate the curl, but it will not induce it if the pepperoni itself will not curl because of the striations in the meat and fat layers not being aligned to do so. There is nothing intrinsically better about pepperoni slices that cup versus those that do, on the grounds of it cupping alone.

The marinara sauce never gets old
Pro tip: bread freezes quite well! You can put your extra buns in the freezer and pull them out later when you need them, and they won't go moldy in there.
he has no space left in the freezer LMAO
That's what I do with buns. It's usually not a problem with normal bread because I usually can go through a whole loaf in a week making sandwiches and toast, but with hamburger and hotdog buns I almost always freeze them because I'm likely only to eat a couple during any given week. So I sometimes need them to last a couple months.

Mukbangs are also (majority of the time) oversexualized.
It's a different type of content. There's streaming a video game and there is making a review of a video game. This would be more like the latter.
Mukkbangs are overlydramatic and just displays of severe gluttony, this is just some random dude reviewing random shit
Guys just a quick tip, you can absolutely freeze bread and when it dethaws it'll be just as good as if you didn't freeze it. I think when you do that it can last up to 2 months. Just make sure you let it thaw completely before eating.
I've definitely had the problem before of either not removing the bread soon enough to thaw, and also a few instances where I pulled it out too soon and it started to stale a little bit.
From what I can gather from this video, Ian was having a freezer-space issue with all the boxes of frozen food that he bought. But I do agree with you. I make my own homemade bread in batches of 4-6 loaves, and double bag each loaf, suck out the air with a straw before tying the bag, and freezing it until I'm ready for a fresh loaf. If I'm able to, I'll do 8 loaves, and freeze it...family and visitors also love getting a loaf of bread too. Lots of bread is a good thing I my opinion ❤
I just toast slices of bread straight from the freezer. I am nearly never in a situation where raw bread is better than toast.
@@bitnewt That makes sense from a flavor standpoint, but if for whatever reason you don't want to dirty up a plate, then eating a sandwich or something with toasted bread could wind up leaving a huge mess of crumbs everywhere.
My parents used to freeze bread when I was growing up. It absolutely does not come out the same.

I appreciate that Ian shows he is a true cat owner that will, randomly and without reason, just go bother his cat. Ask it what it's doing. Honestly buying bread in big quantities like that is pretty cost effective for individuals. I personally buy it cheap in bulk and just freeze it and defrost slices / rolls as and when I want them. Not only is it cheaper than buying it in smaller portions, but I find it can actually be less wasteful because you’re never throwing out fresh bread. That’s just my take though.
Costco’s bakery sells pound cakes (unless this is regional) that also freeze and defrost very well! What is a pound cake but unsliced sweet “bread”?
Yeah bread freezes really well, so buying in bulk can be a really good deal.

It can be painful if you aren't careful with the oil splatters, but it makes them so nice and crispy, and really brings out the savory flavors. This might be pot sticker sacrilege, I don't know.
Frying them with oil was always the way I was taught to cook them. You fry up the bottoms with oil and then once they've browned a little, turn the heat down a bit and add the cornstarch and water slurry till it covers the bottom of the pan in a few cm and then cover to let them cook until the water has all evaporated and the cornstarch makes the crispy "wings"
For years this channel has titillated the joy centers of my brain, thank you Ian.
Costco, hands down, has the best burger patties that I’ve tried so far
I can't tell if you're enjoying yourself and it makes this video that much better
I'm overwhelmed by the downright steal of a deal that is the Costco hotdog. And with a soda? The soda alone is like $3 here. $1.5 is a fair and equal enough price to ours if it's literally just a sausage with a bun, but the soda puts it on another level entirely.
A soda alone is $0.59 might have gone up a dime. The berry smoothie is $3. Fountain drinks are actually that expensive for thr amount od soda they yeild.
Having done the math. I can't even buy another brand of beef hot dog for a $1.50 for a quarter pound. The bun, soda, and condiments are basically free.
The same can be said almost for their whole pizza in the cafe. You almost can't buy the amount of mozzarella and Parmesan on the pizza for the cost of the pizza. You're basically paying for the cost of materials when you order one of those.
But it's what they call a loss leader. They make up for all the money they spend on the cafe for all the people that go in and buy a new TV or some laptop or fancy kitchen gadget

Glad to see you cooking again Ian, I missed your culinary shenanigans..
I know for a fact i love 3/5s of these things but im still watching
Those frozen chicken bakes are the best thing ever to exist!
I am holding a breadfest and your recommendation is perfect!!
The orange chicken they sell is easily one of my favorites. When I prepare it I usually eat it with rice and canned green beans or different combinations of cooked vegetables with soy sauce. It is a LOT of food, so I usually eat it over the course of 3 days, typically for both lunch and dinner. it's one of my favorite things that I make at home.
definitely going to have to give those potstickers a shot
also GOD their hot dogs are so good. I literally had to swear myself off of them because I liked them too much lmao
Indeed
I been buying they're orange chicken for like 5 years now lol, it's really good.
Beef bulgogi is hetter
I got the orange chicken once but haven't been able to find it at my local (an hour and a half away) Costco since then; I tried all the options at my local groceries and none of them have even been close (some being outright bad).
:(
8:30 Botan Calrose, perfect rice choice. My favorite!
I was actually talking about this with a family member in the grocery store the other day and an old man nearby had a very ingenious solution for the freezer space problem he told me to take the Frozen sandwiches I had purchased take them out of the box and keep the instructions to cook them. I thanked him for his insight and I went home and did just that and now I enjoy more space in my freezer.
