I feel like I’ve said this before but I still can’t believe that 6 years ago you made a microwave food video as a joke and it became so successful that we now have Brutalfoods.
That’s the way the cookie plops
@@Applestoroger*plop*
Yeah I was here for video game content but hey I’m with it
Has it been that long? Feels just like yesterday.
Oh, wait, I just rewatched the brutal foods series the other day...
@@Pizaz0 10 years of these guys.. I feel so old. I've been watching AVGN, PBG, Brutalmoose, JonTron, and all these OG CZcamsrs since I was a wee lad. Man does time fly
"I don't like soggy bread." Buys a meal that's literally the embodiment of bread soaked in a viscous liquid.
There is a difference between bread that is soggy because of water and bread that is soggy because of gravy.
Well when you eat biscuits and gravy you’re usually done before the biscuit can even get soggy
@@SUP3R2069Not when it is cooked in the same pouch. What was he expecting lol
@@johnr797 yeah, I feel like it would make sense if the biscuits got put in after but ik it would be nasty since they’re freeze dried.
@@itogito you maybe!
For anyone wondering, Cabela's is owned by Bass Pro, but is more centered around food preparation (making jerky, sausages, etc). Cabela's was bought by Bass Pro because supposedly people kept trying to get meat smoking products from Bass Pro
Makes sense. If you’re gonna hunt, you’re obviously gonna want some way to store, preserve and cook the food
Most people who are big into meat curing don't go to cabelas
@@raptorman6589 it's a different niche of meat curing, more for just randos that suddenly have a load of meat from hunting and need to keep it from going bad as opposed to people who are more into the culinary side of smoking meat etc
I thought cabela's was a shitty videogame about hunting the grizzly bear who killed your father
Cabela’s was purchased by Johnny Morris (Bass Pro owner) due to Cabela’s being in financial hardship. Morris being the businessman he is, seen a great opportunity to combine the two. Morris being friends with Cabela’s previous ownership decided to keep the name to save the brand that was built.
3:24 I as a backpacker can say (not having watched the full review) the freeze dried meals are meant for backpackers, but you can also use them for "survival scenarios." That being said, after you have been hiking over 14 miles for a whole day (with a pack) these all taste like the best thing you've ever eaten.
This is what I love about going outdoors, everything is much more enjoyable even a simple sandwich can be a 5 michelin star meal after a long hike.
I was going to say the same thing. Especially because the most you want to do at the end of an 8 hour day of hiking is boil water
@@anxiousseal556I should definitely try that out. The simplest things being enjoyable sounds great. It likely would teach me to feel alive and grateful.
Yeah I completely agree. The chicken and dumplings one is my favorite
I buy the wrong brand what he ate looks gas.
sorry for the long wait, but i return with foods!!
hope you guys enjoy this one, i worked hard on it!
ok
We love you Ian! Thanks for all the great content over the years
thank you for your service sir
Bass! bass! Bass!
It’s all good :,) These videos always make me happy no matter how long I gotta wait
the PLOP sound effect is like a good friend you knew for years. You don't see him all to often, but you are happy everytime he returns.
The fact that Ian continues to use that sound bite years after it's creation is part of why I love his videos.
Sploish
One of my favorite recurring bits. Having seen the video it came from when it was posted, it feels kinda special.
I remember first hearing a random "plop" ages ago. It was a video of some baler going in a field and whoever was filming just said "plop" as a bale came out. Wonder if that's what inspired Ian (it was basically in the exact same cadence he uses)
@@phoenixvance6642 possible, although I feel like the cadence used is the universal ...plop accent?
Painting your face for a 10 seconds joke in a half an hour video is the mark of quality that kept Brutalmoose a consistent master of the craft
Love that smile

The editing for this video is absolutely superb. Bravo!
Also, the orange one appeared. This is an instant classic
Ian has always been amazing at editing. I think it’s what makes his videos so successful.
I figured you would enjoy that, your videos are top notch! Been following you on TikTok for a minute now!
thanks so much Lumpy!
figured you might enjoy the orange one..
You watch brutalmoose too?!
Hey lumpy, been following you since Garfield
brutalmoose's content always feels so weirdly cozy.
Thanks for putting that into words
Must be why I'm compelled to do a Brutalfoods series binge every holiday season. It's become my ritual.
It's the 90s vibes.
Ik bro I missed him
Welcome to Washington State
This’ll get lost in the comments but Bass Pro Shops bought out Cabela’s ~6 years ago. At this stage all the logistics and products for sale are dictated by Bass Pro shops, just with a different name on the front of the store. Also very glad you did not have to endure the horror that is an Alpine Aire meal, quite possibly the worst thing you could possibly eat, ever.
perhaps a part 2, if Ian feels like taking on the wilderness once more..
Really enjoyed this video ! I have tried some of these too , so I can relate with you !
The ad was neat too !
If you're hiking for hours on end most things taste pretty good though
@@johnr797 That's true but there are definitely better shelf stable meals out there
@@aniquinstark4347 also true
We may have to wait 1 to 2 months between most videos but the quality of each one that Brutalmoose produces makes it so worth it. I even watch the sponsored advert because they’re so unique.
This is one of only two channels I have whitelisted in Sponsorblock because the sponsor segments are so well produced. I actually go back to them if one mistakenly gets skipped.
This is incredibly cathartic as an ex-Cabelas employee. Thought this might be a review of the restaurant/grill food that they used to do. I ate exactly one bison burger from the store I worked at before it was shut down for Covid reasons. Was pretty good.
Damn they stopped that? I always wanted to try it.
@@Drownedinblood might still be open at some locations, but yeah the one I worked at never reopened its grill even after the pandemic
after walking 30+ miles in the wilderness, i can guarantee every single one of these meals will taste like gourmet. also, your hair looks incredible
fr those mountain house are awesome
He has to do a hair routine video:)
No joke. I think the ones that are supposed to be solid foods (like biscuits) don't translate to JAW pouches very well. But the breakfast scramble has been my favorite so far. Add in a couple hot sauce packets that I grabbed from the gas station on the way there and it's actually pretty good.
That lasagna is fire when you're backpacking
I’ve eaten these with cold water when hot wasn’t available. Some are better than others. Water must be like lava hot for these to properly cook and take much longer than directions say.
Brutalfoods equals 30 minutes of recording and 6 months of editing. Love it.
As a veteran hiker and primitive camper, I've tried all of these. The Mountain House lasagna is really good. I like to make a campfire frybread to dip in the sauce. Another great MH meal is the breakfast burrito mix - you don't need tortillas, I just eat the mix as is. It's better than their regular breakfast entrees.
In Norway we have REAL Turmat, and while hard to find and rather expensive, they do resemble these but seem to be a little better quality and some more thought put into what should be and what shouldn't be in them. When I read biscuit on the package Ian chose I felt that it was a horrible idea*. As while some baked goods are delicious to dip into a soup, stew, or something, it's good because you do it yourself if you understand what I mean, so one can decide the level of soggyness oneself. And if they manage to make it not get soggy, was it probably dipped in some weird chemicals beforehand...
But yeah, freeze dried meals like these can be really delicious if done right and I've bought a week's worth just in case something happens with the war so close by... I probably should buy more... and some jerky... And some more cans of fruits and vegetables for vitamins and stuff..!
* in Spain they sell chocolate milk with chunks of Marie biscuits/cookies, which also gets a nope from me.
@@TeruteruBozusama honestly the idea of biscuit pieces was a little odd to me,... when i go hiking i just take some biscuit and a bottle of milk. pop that into a dutch oven and you got a nice little shortcake! i think thatd be more appetitizng.
Last year, a buddy and I hiked across the US for 4.5 months. These meals were never in our packs, as they were way too expensive. One day, though, we were out in the middle of nowhere in South Dakota and an amazing lady pulled over to the side of the road and offered us whatever we wanted out of a cooler she had. Of course there were soft drinks and snacks (which were a godsend themselves, as it was ~95°F), but she also had 2 freeze dried meals. We asked if it was okay to take, and she basically shoved them in our packs for us.
After a 25 mile day, we ate that questionable macaroni and beef like kings.
Ian being the most adventurous picky eater is why I return time and time again. What an unlikely perfect paring.
That pepperoni pizza is an exact copy of what is in the MREs. That company is the producer of many MRE components. Probably why it reminds you of it!
izzat so? that would explain it.
Now if only MREs were more affordable on the civilian market
Speaking as someone in the military, stop being weird eat dominoes like a normal person, it’ll cost the same taste several times better, and won’t back you up, believe me your but will thank you
@@ozzysalazar8584as the child of someone in the military, mres are strangely nostalgic for me. I "know" itl be mediocre at best but the memories of camping make it a nice experience
Didn't even bother changing the packaging.
quite literally was about to come down to write this exact comment, glad that there's someone else out there who's into MREs enough to know about the MRE 'za while also being a brutalmoose enjoyer
I appreciate how no matter how long it’s been, I can always count on Ian to add a “Plop” sound bite in his videos
I started to gain consciousness just as public access tv channels faded, but I really get the feeling it would've been almost as cool as these reviews. You're one of the only creators and editors that still makes me laugh like a deflating balloon with all the chaos, there's no style I can compare it to. Keep on ploppin'
Kinda random but man I just love this channel. I've been here since the Chantelise and polar express days and sometimes I feel like I miss that era, but i'm just happy Ian is still here making videos and being his weird self. Thanks for being here, Moose.
Bro same, sometimes I miss not seeing such bravery.
same! god, it's probably been since i was in fifth grade that i was watching him- it's kind of insane to think about how i still am, but i'm really glad
Out of the idubz Ian and this Ian, this is the better Ian
ahh maaaan remember when he was part of normalboots
same on all counts, tbh
that bridgeford pizza is literally the ones they put in US MREs. im glad to see that they sell it individually
Wasn't that meal discontinued in the early 2010's? Probably why it expires in 3 years lol
@@Deadpool55223 no the pizza MRE is alive and well. Im not a fan though, my favorite part is all the sides like the cookie and choc protein shake. 6/10 would trade for chicken chunks still.
@@Unrealisticname oh I just looked it up, it was discontinued for a while but came back in 2018
I wonder if anyone has plans to put the freeze-dried ice cream bars in an MRE. Probably not dense enough to make it worth the space.
A literal scam
Brutalmoose has to be the only CZcams channel I don't skip the sponsored ad. So well done haha
Internet Historian's are also fun
Obsessed with the editing on this one. The eagle bit killed me.
Also this is random but i really appreciate hiw long the mustard costume has hung around i remember the hot dog king video coming out and ive been increasingly amused any time i see it again.
The bald eagle bit is already one of my favorite brutalmoose moments... Great work ian!
pure excellence, no one else doing it like ian.
Unhinged Ian is best Ian
Ian, never stop being the wildest yet most lo-fi person on CZcams.
This might be an all time great for brutalmoose editing. Spectacular the whole way through
Holy shit this is an instant classic. Gonna add this vid to my yearly brutalmoose binge list
I can’t believe Ian would flood his kitchen just for a video. That’s what I call dedication.
He essentially welcomed a whole mold invasion into his home it was pretty impressive
You should try that end times bucket food sometime. And love the Yungtown Hello Fresh ad.
But PEANUTBUTTERGAMERRRR
He'll need the one with the shovel.
Also remember He'll need to put 22 gallons into the RICE (when I saw your comment about the buckets and reminded me of the Good mythical morning episode about pastor Jim Baker's apocalypse buckets😂😂😂)
My grandpa's basement is FULL of those, once I lost my phone among the buckets because they were stacked so high in the guest bedroom.
It's the nut gamer
Yo! Luke straight killed it with that song. And great synergy with the video effects too Ian. You two make a great creative team.
We DO!!!
As a lover of microwaveable/canned food and camping, I’ll be the first to say that I live and die by Mountain House. Chili Mac and Beef is top tier, and the Spicy Southwest Style Skillet is unreal, I’d eat that for breakfast everyday if my heart wouldn’t explode from all the preservatives
Everything I know about freeze dried meals boils down to, "You cant go wrong with tomato sauce." The tomato flavor just stands up to the process so well, throw in some pasta and it'll be about as close as you can get to an enjoyable meal.
Yeah pasta ones always turn out the best
This is officially the most Texan video Ian has ever done.
Even more than the Texas-themed BrutalFoods video.
which is especially wild considering he lives in Washington
@@DougSalad He also did move from texas to washington.
@@DougSalad He's from Texas guys... he's talked about it before.
Perhaps, but if he wanted to go full Texan, he could do a Brutalfoods on HEB or Buc-ee's.
That is quite honestly the best Hello Fresh ad I have seen in my life. And I must have seen at least, like, 7.
The editing on your videos always kills me. The transformation sequence and when you threw the tasty looking silicone packet into the glass and then was sucked into it... inspirational.
Ian is the Salvador Dali of youtube. Proudly makes some of the stranges videos ever, has iconic facial hair, and owns a pet anteater that he throws onto people. Real chill guy, def sub to him.
can i just say i love the narrative here? the little adventure story being told as you eat the foods is such a delight
Ian really dialed up the madness on this one, and I LOVE IT
You can say that.
"Honey! You're gonna love this! I covered dinner today... And it's freeze dried!" Made me laugh so hard people stared.
I can't think of any other youtuber's sponsored bits that I actually like rewatching. Well done both you and Youngtown, that song is a banger!
man you really have to admire some of the commitment and editing work here, it takes a long time to go out to the forest, get those shots on the river and in the cave and then spend all that time rotoscoping himself to put those product shots behind himself to make it look nice. truly a paragon of modern editing and amazing commitment to your work!
And that's why I'm subscribed to this channel.
The fact that his Garfield moment in this had him hating on mondays when the video was uploaded on a monday, i just can’t help but smile because of that.
19:43 that animation walking into the cave is the best!! 😂😂😂
The eagle bit at the beginning had me laughing so hard I hurt my stomach. And then the dark red lights as he cuts it open 😂😂😂😂😂😂 He's my favorite when it comes to comedy.
As a Cabela’s employee this is the best episode ever. Thank you so much
Also yes Cabela’s and bass pro are the same. Bass pro bought Cabela’s a while ago
Adding the Banquet "good, honest value" bit into you reading the first product was a top tier throwback and I appreciate it immensely
Same with the "love that crunch" one, we love you keeping old gags around for the longterm viewers
Plop
BrutalMoose is that one channel that I remember exists like twice a year and immediately binge-watch all the new videos.
I love how you create your videos. They’re always Fun and nostalgic. Plus it’s like a mystery tape sometimes you don’t know what to expect.
I don’t think I’ve seen a channel whose humor is almost entirely from the editing, it always gets me
I also find the dry delivery pretty funny too. My man said "sauwsages" and just kept on like nothing happened
@@Cobalt985 Saouce too. Gets me everytime
God we are so close to that MRE brutal foods episode
For those who don't know, the reason the pizza's packaging is similar to an MRE, is because that's straight up the pizza used in the MRE's. Bridgeford makes a few different products that are used in MRE's, specifically they make most of the bread type products. It's probably the doughiest bread you'll ever eat
this editing is so phenomenally surreal. like this video is genuinely incredible. so good
Im not an outdoor person but stepping into a cabellas or bass pro shop is kind of magical. Its a 5/5 for presentation and scale.
I'm in England and would love to have a shop like this, but it would just be fishing rods and emergency pizzas.
And to live up to the meme, most places need a fishing licence.
@@RyoHazuki1 you need fishing license here too. Fuck dnr
we have a huge one in Michigan ad it has a small mountain display with a lot of forest life taxidermy on it and a huge fish tank at the bottom and a small river that runs through the store. its part of a huge mall we have. we also have a small sea world, lego land, a rainforest cafe and a theater attached to the same building
Fun fact: the "eat by" date is also how long the food takes to digest.
The technology that goes into the packaging is amazing. Who knew we needed packaging that shows everything that's behind you?
I've been watching your videos for a while and this by far has been my absolute favorite. The editing you did and the journey you just took us on... absolute masterpiece.

Ian's sanitation standards scare me a bit. He used cups and bowls fresh from the store right after peeling the plastic off and without washing them first, he put his pizza on the floor and then ate it, and he put the spoon he mixed his lasagna with on the dirty table, then mixed it more. I guess he really has become a top tier Bass Pro Shop survival man!
My kids say "love that crunch" all the time since the Ramen recipe video and they're gonna love that you brought it back!
Those freeze-dried meals really are pretty great when you’re out camping/hiking. In terms of just decent tasting food that is super lightweight for the amount of calories it provides they can’t be beat. Also so simple to prepare.
But they’re extremely expensive for the calories as well lol. Not really an affordable option esp if you’re backpacking for multiple days
@@maddieb.4282then by all means eat bugs. Never once have I though “wow I won’t be around food readily and could actually starve, still better save that $20”.

As a camping / backcountry hiker, those mountain house meals are legitimately my favorite thing. Sometimes I'll eat one instead of cooking dinner just cause they're so good. The Biscuits and Gravy one is my favorite breakfast one, right after the Breakfast Scramble. Chili Mac and Beef and the Beef Stroganoff are my favorite dinner ones. God I wanna go to REI and buy some now :(
10.00 each though, is insane
@@MaxW-er1hm Yeah, but I find them on sale for like 7 or 8 bucks locally. It also helps that I don't actually eat them for every meal. They're better than anything I could make in the backcountry, at least considering the weight. Water you just filter on-site so that's not even an issue.
@@Coconutsales you got to pay for that freeze-dried convenience I guess ,I was just thinking I'd take a tupperware with me. That's about double the cost of a freezer meal to be freeze dried. Not THAT bad , but no bargain.
I want to try them now, lol. If they were cheaper I'd stock up for emergencies-which I'd guess they feel justifies the higher cost....
They remind you of MREs because those pizzas are EXACTLY THE SAME THING that they put in MRE Menu #23, Pepperoni Pizza Slice
Excited for you to reach 1mil. thank you for taking us on this crazy outdoor adventure!!!
This was an instant classic Brutalfoods I’ll watch on repeat. Hysterical episode!
Ian is still the only person making videos I know of that actually makes their sponsored segments worth watching
I’m just in love with the time and care that the editing must have taken. The editing is just amazing quality and severely humorous.
This is my favorite channel on CZcams. I get so excited when a new episode comes out lol I love your editing as well
the unhinged editing is what drew me in this series time and time again these videos is just gushing with personality and style
Unironically the Mountain House stuff is pretty great when you're camping, but boy is the biscuits and gravy stuff gross.
Why not just bring food and a cooler?
@@BackForwardPunch Unless you're going to camp right next to your car nobodys lugging that shit around
@@BackForwardPunchIf you're backpacking multiple miles into the middle of nowhere, food and water are usually the heaviest part. The dehydrated nature of this stuff makes your food pack a lot lighter. If you're just setting up a tent once and staying in one spot a cooler or two tends to be a better option, but if you're camping at a different site each night this stuff comes in handy.
You need to add less water. I'm not sure why they tell you to put so much in. I put maybe 2/3s in and it comes out better. Also never get the ones with eggs. Freeze dried eggs never taste right.
Why does everyone force the use of unironically in 2023 and usually doesn't even use it correctly. Now that's Ironic
As someone who enjoys both backpacking and Brutalfoods videos, this is a niche crossover of interests I never expected to yet am pleasantly surprised to see.
thank you for continuing to make videos. I love watching your reviews of anything and everything!!
The ice cream sandwich is actually really good in my opinion. It’s literally just a freeze dried ice cream sandwich. Honestly the eggs and pasta mountain house meals are my favorite. Those lend themselves best for the freeze drying process imo
The ice cream sandwich didn't look bad at all. But I have to imagine it would also be very jarring to bite into something your brain is telling you should be ice cream, only to then have neither the texture nor coldness of ice cream.
@@gurvmlk I'm gonna be honest. I'm kinda autistic about food, but you'd have to truly sperg out to go through that rollercoaster of sensations -- when it's basically just like a cookie that takes like an ice cream sammie lol
