Tacoma off-road manual
Specs
3.5l v6 MPG
6-speed auto here but manual on drive
Since I do want to get straight into the drive I do want to talk about a few things first really quickly.
First, since I drive the manual, I do want to talk about the clutch start cancel. I will show it working in the drive but the purpose of this is to use the starter motor when the truck is in 1st gear to initiate the motion of the truck when off-road. Other quick things I want to highlight which is new for 2020 is the power adjustable driver seat and the new 8 inch entune system which includes apple carplay and android auto.

I've owned my TRD OFFROAD 6 speed manual for one year and over that time I have accumulated 21,000 miles in various conditions (on and off road). In addition, I own a TRD sport 4x4 automatic and can tell you the Manual is 10x better for me. Regardless if I am towing or even in bumper to bumper traffic I prefer my Manual with the better 4.30 gearing over the 3.91 of the automatic. I like both trucks don't get me wrong but with real world heavy usage of both I'll take the manual.
that’s awesome! I really wish I was able to experience it off road
As far as ride quality on the street which taco do you prefer?
@@doubles8993 the sport as it has a more street oriented suspension. This is just if I had to pick one for one specific scenario.
Doubles 89 Definitely the off road
Manual trans all day 👍
I’m 65, on my 3rd Toyota pick up. #1. 1985 4x4 SR5 Access Cab (fantastic truck put over400k on the clock) #2. 2016 TRD OR, traded with 32k for #3. identical 2020 TRD OR.....now with leather and power seats, which makes me comfortable! All three trucks, had standard transmissions (along with my current 1990 Porsche 944S2, and my 1997 Jeep TJ Wrangler). I still believe that a standard in snow, sand and mud, gives me better control. Although admittedly, a lot of younger guys do extremely well (if not better than me!) with their AT off road vehicles. I made all three of my kids learn to drive on a stick (if for no other reason to keep their damned phones out of their hands while driving :). If I had a complaint....or maybe just a concern....I’m not sure that the 6 speed standard transmission was absolutely necessary......I think a 5 speed would have been sufficient. But that’s just me. Regardless, while driving, I too, still enjoy “rowing the gears”.
Thanks for your comment G M. I too enjoy and prefer the manuals. I've owned a manual SR5 and Corolla, and now that my 03 Ram 3500 w/6sp manual is in the shop getting rebuild I need to get something that can haul a small trailer and just make Lowes or HD runs. My wife loves her Subaru Forester w/6sp manual and we both loved the 68 Camaro w/4sp manual when we had it. Wish our motorhome had a manual trans...
Damn Skippy! 💯👉👍👍
I just bought a 2016 sport with an access cab and 6 speed manual transmission. Glad someone did a review of the manual. Tacoma is the last truck that offers a manual.
Also the Jeep Gladiator
All the gladiators and wranglers have manual. And maybe a few others.
I have a 2017 trd offroad with a manual and 62,000 miles on it. I love it.
That’s awesome! Glad you’re enjoying it
I'm at 64k on my manual 17, love it and no problems!
You Uber in it? That’s a lot of miles.
I've been with my manual Toyota for nearly thirty years now. Still drives the same as it did when I drove it off the lot. When/if the old girl decides to die, I'm going back to the same dealership for another one if they're still there.
Beautiful
My dad bought his '11 Tacoma V6 Automatic from Carson Toyota, put over 176k miles on it since new and still running strong.
U get the manual because its boss as fuck, comes with a higher gear ratio of 4.3 vs the auto 3.9, fixes the automatics shifting problems instantly and costs less.
Toyota tacoma Manual transmission is one of my dream truck
My manual 4wd Tacoma is great! Thinking of buying another one.
My buddy let us drive one of these Tacoma's and you are right, it's hard to stall one of these. Its really forgiving. When my other friend and I got to drive for a bit, we got back in our Toyotas (90 pickup, 06 taco) and we BOTH accidentally popped the clutch and practically floored it out the parking lot cause it was such a different feel.
Love the manual
15K BABYYYYYY!!!!!!! MANUAL HELL YEAHH!!!!
I have one 2019 manual white , with 34000 miles. Still running good
Man I wish Toyota would come out with a manual Tundra 🙏
That would be awesome!
That will be my dream truck for real
Id buy it.
They need a manual 4Runner too
@@drewncars9505 They made them in 1st-3rd generation 4runners
2006 Toyota Tacoma manual (2WD) with 210,000 miles and so far transmission hasn't given me any problems. These are really reliable transmissions and trucks in general, waaaay better than Nissan or other similar trucks
Hey there. I have an 07 manual. Did you have that high squeal from the clutch?
@@shortydancer I hear a squeal but it's not high or loud, mostly on cold mornings I hear it, I don't think it's something to worry too much about
I got a 2006 4.0l 6 speed and for the past 50k miles the throw out bearing has been chirping. It’s getting louder this year so I’ll probably get it fixed finally.
Toyota bulletproof reliability! That's all you need to know! Get one!
This thing will hold its value like a damn Ferrari
As of the beginning of this year I've been saving every penny I can to put as much down towards a manual Toyota Tacoma my only thing is I really like the stick shift and TRD pro that looks almost like the one in the automatic except obviously it's the manual
I have 1993 4 wheel drive sr5 model and I have clutch cancel star I been knowing about it for a while but the 2020 is kick ass
I love the drum brakes.5 years and they not half way gone. Dont understand journalist complains. Toyota could put more power in them but the rear wheels will lock first and no vehicule balance. Yon need 70% front brake. Love my TRD off road manual.
TRD short throw shifter is a huge improvement for manual Tacoma’s.
Oh nice! Thanks for the comment!
Anything that can be done about that clutch?
@@John_BP whats wrong with the clutch?
@@drepop803 at least on my 07, clutch squeak.
@@shortydancer the clutch petal squeaked on both my '98 and '05 Tacos when I owned them. Don't hold your breath waiting for a fix. I just ended up living with it.
I use my cluch strart every time i start my truck. I feel doing this saves your cluch, just make sure your in neutral. If you like to pull trailers the manual is a must. For easer backing put the truck into 4 wheel low. The best way to get one is go to your dealership and order one.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts
One other tip for towing with the Tacoma air your tires up to side wall max. This will make it so you have less fish tailing.
The purpose of that switch is to allow you to turn the key while its in gear to ride the starter out of a tight situation.
@@Shakerhood69 that is the purpose of it, but my dealership says you can use it to avoid starting your truck by pushing in the cluch.
That is correct, I have used it to start the truck from the passenger seat before when the drivers door was frozen with ice.
The video I watched before this was so garbage thanks for knowing your stuff. Just totaled my 95 tacoma in the canyon had over 300,000 miles I put on it so I'm definitely a fan of these trucks. 👍
Thank you!
The only reason I bought my taco 🌮 over the tundra is the manual transmission. It’s fun af !
The Clutch/Start/Cancel button is old. My 2000 Tacoma has that; it's had it since new. Also that reverse position is new for Tacomas. It's always been down to the right until now. It's weird. Don't 18 wheelers use drum brakes...because they're effective?...more effective?
I have a 2004 with around 190,000 mi with no problem and I haven't had to change my rear shoes once compared to my front pads many times
Buying the manual sport today, unfortunately the offroad is not available in canada
Toyota motto, if it aint broke dont fix it, it doesnt hav d latest bells n whistles but its reliable, durabl with great resale value
I agree it lacks in power big time and the steering is super sloppy I'm just waiting 1 more year to trade in for a v6
Unicorn!!! Send that truck to TX ! Fyi the clutch pedal off button has been used by Toyota since the 80's. We had a 1987 4Runner that had it.
Haha ya I’m surprised I never noticed it before. This was the only one at the dealership and it’s been sold. Hopefully they get more but I was told the allocation for manuals is really tight.
Also it helps go uphill if you start it in first. Not just used to turn on and off.
I test drove a 2019 Tacoma automatic the other day- had no power to accelerate- do the manuals have this issue?
Maybe it's just me being biased because I'm used to these trucks being manual but if I get another tacoma I'd prefer it to be a manual
I love the offroad grill
I think only only legit purpose of start clutch cancel is when in 4Low & stall on a hill. Low range has the torque advantage to propel truck.
That cancellation was been there a long time now I know that you're not a follower on Toyota I have five of them I know what I'm talkin about even RV Toyota I have lots of Toyotas my my favorite one is my 84 Toyota pickup truck I took the G Unit out and put a w56 in it I wish I could find a r151 though that's what I want
Drum brakes being submerged in water is no different than disc brakes being submerged in water. Drums effectively have more contact for better initial braking but it’s disadvantage against disc is heat dissipation in that the braking performance degraded as it heats up past its normal operating temperature. It has nothing to do with being submerged in water/mud/etc.
They are chosen for longevity.
@@triple6758 no they’re not. Toyota was just cutting corners knowing the truck would sell well regardless
@@trentimus5700 Ford ranger with rear discs, 60-0 stop 138 feet. Tacoma with drum rears 60-0 stop 126 feet. What now brown cow?
@@triple6758 yeah, I think it has to do with tuning front and rear. Raking power . If disc is stronger it goes in front, and drum is weaker, it goes in rear. Which means less skidding. So shorter stopping distance. It's common on high end bicycles and cars to have more powerful brake.in the front vs the rear, or sometime sthey put a bigger disc in front for more stopping power. But discs are certainly easiert to service.
honestly i wanna see you be brave
ECU not ECM and my 2017 tacoma 4cyl Sr 4ws had low compression at 40k rebuilt motor and rear differential seep plus cold start pop 5/7 days a week
Owners manual says not to use the clutch cancel...I had a 01 tacoma used it everytime drove without a clutch for couple months. Now have a 19 it's nice but miss my old 1
My 1986 toyota has the clutch start feature haha
Why those Tacoma are not in Canada. The off road we have its either automatic or acces cab manual no four doors manual at all
Whats the 4 wheel low final gear ratio?
I want those headlights.
The reason I have a 2010 Tacoma is because when I went to the dealer and asked to drive a manual Tundra I was told they only came with Fing slushbox's (dealer said automatic). So since I will never buy a new slushbox they lost out on selling a Tundra.
I love my TRD Offroad Tacom 6 speed manual 4.0, and plan on driving it till the sun goes supernova! Gen 3's don't interest me at all. Wish I still had my 1998 TRD Offroad 3.4 v6 5 speed !
You need to remain in an automatic trans. A stick requires driver input where an automatic is a snooze mobile
I have driven a 1997 Nissan Pick-up with 5 speed manual. How is the clutch on a Tacoma? The stick looks the same length as the one I used on the Nissan, but I remember the clutch being very frustrating to use because it was so steep and easy to stall out. Only car that had a harder manual transmission that I have personally owned was the 2004 Pontiac GTO.
the clutch was very easy and predictable. The bite point was very forgiving and it wasn’t too heavy which I liked
I learned to drive stick on a Nissan truck. Clutch gave me a lot of issues, but once I tried another manual vehicle, it was easy peezy.
thank you. so hard to find manual transmission trucks and videos about it. I am bummed out NO Tundra manual and also NO long bed Tacoma manual transmission.
Surprisingly, the long bed MT are available in Canada.
Would like to find a TRD Pro with a manual 6-foot bed!
The Tacoma DCLB is available with a manual in Hawai’i. I’ve seen one or two at my local Honolulu dealership. I just don’t want that long of a vehicle here in Honolulu.
I wish Toyota would build a 4-cyl 4x4 Access Cab manual still. The only A/Cab I could build out was an Off Road V-6 manual, little bit more pricey than the SR or SR5’s I was wanting with a 4-cyl & auto. My Dad has a 2017 Double Cab 4x2 4-cyl and it is just too heavy. I think an A/Cab I-4 w/manual would be sweet.
Just an FYI but revving the engine cold isn't good for its health. The oil has not circulated through the engine enough for you to safely rev it without potentially harming something internally.
i appreciate it! i do let the engine warm up when i am driving it and then i turn it off specifically to film the start up and revs.
Darth Vader I was thinking the same thing
New Tacoma owner here. Question about the transmission; I've got this really dull, metallic clanking when I engage the clutch or move the shifter. Is that normal or should I get it looked at?
Idk
That happens to me too.
@@antonioolmedo4987 shift at a higher rpm...likes to be about 3000 rpm...shifting at lower revs will result in noise...
had my 18 trd offroad MT for a lil over a yr. just rolled 72k miles. gonna add the pedal commander. my only issue is i have to use 4 low to pull my boat out of the water. it will go dead everytime if not in 4low
That’s what it is there for bro 😂😂😂
Are these manual Tacomas has to be ordered?
Holy shit I thought that area looked familiar. Thats in the carsom wilmington area in socal.
How does Carson Toyota feel about you revving up past 4500 rpm and this vehicle being 840 miles shy of the break in period? Hopefully no one bought this one....
I noticed that the interior shot was of the automatic tacoma. Does the manual tacoma (trd off road) have push to start?
Good catch! I had reviewed the automatic initially but lost the footage for the drive. I then got the opportunity to drive the manual so repurposed my b roll footage. The manual trd off road I drove did not have push start.
@@PushingPistons Cheers for the response and thanks for the great video! I need to stop by the dealership for a test drive
I drive a 1998 4Runner with 330,000 miles with a manual trany. I don't know what I'm going to do if it needs to
be replaced. why can't a new 4Runner also come with a manual trany like the Tacoma?????
I own it in quicksand and its head above my 18
I have the same but in access cab 6mt and I love it!
I love it but I wish I could get the manual in a long box!
Same. I wish they did. I'll have to go automatic because I really need the long box
You can in a sport access cab
People keep saying that you dont have to have the clutch in to start it so you can use the starter to roll it, or leave it in neutral and start like thats a cool new feature... every single old car was like that. I start my 92 dakota every day without pushing the clutch in. I dunno I just think its funny that we got that feature to protect our cars and stuff and now the new ones remove it as a "feature"
Theoretically, it's better to put in the clutch because there is less inertia for the starter. It would save wear and tear on the flywheel. And starter.
@@sasquatchrosefarts I suppose but my point was that's its funny that they made it so you couldn't do it for safety, called it a feature, and now they're removing it and calling the removal a feature.
I recently put a deposit on an automatic OR for MSRP. Called another dealership and they said they can get me a manual guaranteed but they’d be giving me a $7500 mark up. I love manuals but that’s just ridiculous.
When did Toyota get rid of the hand grab on the driver side pillar? I have an 09 Taco with it and I use it pretty much every time I get in.
I’m honestly not sure. I’ll try to find out
After 2015
Please Toyota make a Manual Tranny 4Runner! I don't want to buy an old XTerra, or a new Jeep, just to get an SUV with a manual.
Can anyone confirm that the TRD Off Road has limited slip functionality in the differential as well as the electronic locker? I freaking hate wheelspin in the rain when pulling away from a light...
Its not a mechanical LSD unfortunately. I believe if you turn the traction control off, it will do an electronic LSD by using braking on the wheel with slip, but it’s too slow to react in a situation like you mention accelerating in the rain onto a road
I don’t understand, how does the off road model come in 2wd
How hard is it to put a v8 in it? 🤔
Don't you need to be in neutral to use clutch start cancel?
No, it is intended to be used in 1st gear when you want the starter to move the truck forward as it starts the engine. If you are just testing the feature or starting from the passenger seat then yes start it in neutral so you don't end up running into something.
Your not supposed to use clutch start cancel unless your in a sticky situation. It starts in 1st and the engine pushes you forward no clutch needed.
Rear brakes provides much much less stopping power compared to the front disc brakes.
So rear drum brakes is not a big deal.
Pet peeve of mine: putting the hand through the wheel upside down when approaching a turn. :) No biggie... just bad form.
Why not more Toyota tacoma x-Runner🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
I would order a new one from the factory if I could still get a 4 cylinder with a 5 or 6 speed manual. By the time I was able to afford one they quit making them :(
Oh wow sorry to hear that :(
wpould be cool if you can order it. i would order a single cab long bed manual 4 cly
The Hilux comes with the 2.7 and Manuel overseas.
I agree I’m lucky to have a manual 91 SR-22
I miss my mid 90s mt ranger. They never stopped making it ROW but here in the us they stopped and ruined this new generation. So it’s a taco for me.
What color is that?
The 3rd gen manual transmission is easily the worst MT I have ever had the displeasure of using. Overly clunky when shifting into gears, the clutch pedal is sometimes sluggish in coming back up, sometimes it doesn't shift into first and you have to double clutch and they put reverse right next to first without a true lockout. I have searched around and talked to various people and the dealership and "that's just the way it is, working as designed". I've driven 30 year old maintenance golf cards with better manual transmissions. C'mon Toyota. The only saving grace is that it works with the adaptive cruise control and of course the clutch start cancel, which it seems 99% of people don't even know how or when to properly use it.
What’s up with all that raving?? Nothing to do with the 6 speed manual transmission.
Does the truck have the hill assist feature?
The sport manual has it.
I think u rolled thru 3 stop signs & crossed a solid line. Does truck come with a cd and access cab? How much $ in CA?
The gear ratios are the worst part of this trans. They make no sense.
1st is super short, 2nd is super tall. So you have to wind the shit out
of first just so you can clunk into 2nd and 2nd leaves you no torque.
2nd is closer to what 3rd is like in other cars. The only way to help
this is to double clutch, which is next to impossible with the sluggish
as hell electronic throttle. A throttle controller like a sprint
booster or pedal commander is a must have. That, and a short throw
shifter, and you'll have a reasonably enjoyable truck to drive. That being said, my 2019 TRD Offroad manual is the best truck I've ever owned, and I'll probably never buy a brand new truck ever again.
Are drums really worse performing in the elements? I would think it's the opposite since the drum is enclosed and keeps the elements out
Im just getting used to the taco in winter driving. But so far so good. I havent noticed any issues in braking. First night with real ice/snow mix
Agreed. Keeps elements out. I’ve rebuilt off road rigs and drum brakes were clean inside even when missing rubber stoppers usually present for brake adjust access.
Clutch start cancelled feature has been with Toyota for a long time..... nothing new about it unless it’s for the new generation who doesn’t drive manual....
Yup, I have it on my 1990 4Runner 3.0L 5 speed manual.
I drive a 94 Toyota pick up 5 speed. I heard his description of the clutch start cancel at the beginning and now I don’t know if he knows much about the vehicle.
The P R D jolt only happens if you barely hold the brakes, push the pedal down, and the truck doesn't jolt 🤪. Some these issues are debunked ignorance.
Toyota's 3.5 engine is underpowered. What happens if Ford offers the new Ranger a 2.7 ecoboost on the FX4?
Even more unreliability happens
Engine has plenty of power its the pedal that holds it back... you put a sprint booster in like I did in a manual 3rd gen totally different truck 👍 way cheaper then a tune... also you can add Ripp coil packs they give about 14ph more
Still go with the taco.
Buy the manual tacoma...then 2jgte swap it 🤙. Slap on a massive single and call it a day.
Hi how come my tacoma make big thug noise if i shift fast like a car
Because its a truck not a car.
When I stop by a dealer to pick up an oil filter in my 2004 Toyota Tacoma the sales people always rush out to meet me. I say show me an extended cab Tacoma with a manual transmission and a locker. No such truck. I'll keep my 1st gen!
No you lose the point of the package which is crawl control and mts
2:22 my mom's 99 Rav4 and my dad's 2001 Tacoma both have this. It's not new
LOL, I've NEVER used the clutch cancel start and no it doesn't save your clutch.
Haha it’s definitely not supposed to save your clutch. I wonder if there are people who use it on a day to day basis
@@PushingPistons Its there for getting you out of a tight situation Off Road, allows you to ride the starter out while the truck is in gear, no need to use it everyday unless it is a dedicated trail rig.
@@PushingPistons those people are going to be investing in new starters soon...
If you use the button while in neutral, there is no strain on the starter. I guess you could argue there is additional strain on the button (who cares) but I would rather change out a button than replace a clutch. Basic mechanics people, not using the clutch is in essence saving your clutch. Again, this is only true if the transmission is in neutral when using the button. If you use it in first gear, yes, you are straining your starter. My $.02
Is it a Car or a truck?¿🤔🤔🤔
Haha it’s a truck! I know I mentioned car a couple times
Is extremely hard on an engine to rev it high at idle. I can float your bearings.
Well ovwr 300000 miles
Seeing as the truck does not have more than 10 miles, you’re not supposed to be flooring the truck within its first 1,000 miles. The truck hasnt been “broken” in yet.
Stfu.
Go to a factory and see what they do to these engines.. they rev the shit out of them.
Why no JBL system
The JBL speakers only come with the Premium package (leather seats, moonroof, etc) AND the automatic. The Premium package with the stick doesn't have the JBLs.
If you order it you'll get it
Not available with MT.
You had the clutch on first gear for like 20 seconds dude! You are not a good driver, holding the clutch wears it faster,
At what point in the video does he hold the clutch in first giear for 20 seconds? I didn't see that at all.
It has hill assist
Double Cab Long bed no manual. Too bad.
drum brakes work better in mud
Everyone it seems in an age group seems to say ""T" Otah. I thought it was called Toyota.
toy-yoda!
sir the way you drive standard transmission it going to cost you a lots of money on brake pad's replacement , because you not really taking full advantage of what manual transmission can offer, I've noticed that you always put on neutral almost half mile away before you get to the traffic lights or stop signs then you just lay on the brakes to stop the vehicle , that's wrong
you should downshift to the low {right} gear and let the engine do the job to slowdown the vehicle then you just slightly press the brake to stop the vehicle if you have to
The way you driving it , I will advice you to get an automatic transmission, it will save you a lots of money on brake jobs.
Brakes are way cheaper than transmission parts, think about it by down shifting you are putting more wear and tear on all moving parts, extra clutch wear and extra gear wear. Pads and rotors aren't nearly as much. Just my .02 as I drive manual also.
If you know how to drive a manual correctly you will never need to have the transmission changed. What you DON'T do is take the vehicle out of gear and into neutral when you are driving. It amazes me how bad people in North America are at driving manuals and how they choose automatics over manuals, which are more likely to break.
Farting massively today.
Everybody who claims they need disc brakes takes their truck to a mechanic to service their brakes anyway. The drums work fine, and maybe u will learn something working on them yourselves
Performance nd reliability....until your fuel pump quits....let’s face it...Toyota ain’t what it used to be.
I hear you man. This fuel pump recall has been a quickly growing issue.
Bill Beverly STFU
Nothing is what it use to be because of crap government regulations, but Toyota is still hands down the best!
Or you get a crappy 6 speed transmission that chirps constantly from the throw out bearing (started at 27,000mls) that wears out the aluminium quill and doesn't have a proven fix that Toyota refuses to fix. I will never buy another 1st gen Toyota again. They definitely aren't what they used to be.
It would have been funny, if when you first started it, it jumped and hit the wall
A 2wd Tacoma lol
